Proven Language Hacks to Learn Any Language Faster (For Beginners)

1. Introduction: everybody welcome guys to our free language masterclass. I'm super excited to be here with you guys today. My name is Sean, the CEO of RIPE, and we prepared this presentation for you guys with this course so that it's going to help you save more time in learning any language. So I want to do I want to get started as soon as possible because I know how valuable time is for you guys. And the topic for today is we What we've done is we've broken down the six steps that you need to take to go from beginner, whether you are completely starting out or you have some basics of learning your target language and being able to take you to mastery level in just about any language doesn't matter whether you're learning Spanish, French, German, you know English. So whatever level you are, how to go from that level to the mastery level and these six steps that you're gonna be needing to take. So the agenda for today it's a very simple process. I want to know exactly what you guys can expect from this live presentation. Ah, the six steps. Really? We're going to be covering is ah, number one. We're gonna start with the foundation, which is that mindset you need required for massive growth. Now, this isn't a, you know, wishy washy, kind of feel good, kind of positive. Ah, presentation or this Tactic it It is actually a foundation core that you need that will set you up for just about every other step you're going to need to take in your learning journey. Second is learning the right words the right way. This is going to save you a boatload of time. The power of cognizance is the third step, which is kind of like your best friend when it comes to languages will share with you what that is. And it's funny to so few people actually talk about this tactic, and I think you're really going to be able to enjoy this strategy when you're learning a language. The fourth is learning freezes that are relevant to your life. You know, so often we spend our time spending energy and resources learning things that will never use. And this isn't our fault, necessarily because it's just been wired through, You know, this kind of process of needing to cover everything. We want to be perfectionist. When it comes to learning something, you are taking new things. On fifth is how to expand your vocabulary. We recover strategies on how you can exactly do this. And then last step is how to go from conversation proficiency or, you know, being with the whole the 32nd conversation all the way to mastery. Now, many of you guys may not have heard about what we do and ripe. So before we give out this presentation, which should last about an hour or so, what we want to do is just quickly cover what we're about so that you're not coming in as this. You know, thinking who is this stranger talking to you talking to me about learning a language? Guys. I want to know a little bit more information about you, though. Those of you guys that are on the call right now, I would love to know. Why are you learning a new language? Now, some of you guys may just be exploring the idea of learning a language. Maybe you've learned a language in the past, whether it was high school or college years. And you're now thinking, Ah, you know what? Maybe I could try learning the language again. Uh, or some of you guys may already be committed. Maybe you've already committed to learning a language in the next six months or in the next 12 months. And this is a way for you to get new strategies so that you can accelerate your path. That's awesome. Either way, whatever situation you're in, what we want to do really quickly is just to cover some of these science backed research that shows you the benefits of learning a language. And I think whether you're just starting or whether you already are on your path, this understanding of benefits and the reward of the action and the heard, you know the journey that you're going to go through, it really helps motivate you. So I want to be able to share some of the information that we covered on that we have gathered online and through research of what are the major benefit. So number one learning the language can help you improve your career can help you explore new opportunities that have never risen before. That may not have been open to you in the past, so if you already speak just one language right now, which most of us do, and hopefully all of us do. Actually, then we've actually just been limited with all the with with the options that are around us within just that language itself, if you think about it. So let's say you're speaking English right now and there's chances are there's tons off other opportunities that may not exist today, or that already out there that you simply just not qualify for that you are limiting your options for your limiting yourself on your confining to this restriction of just being able to find opportunities because of the language that you speak today. And let's face it, I mean, today we live in such an amazing, globalized world, where by every second that goes by their arm or the world is becoming a more international place where cultures are clashing, where everything from business, entertainment and politics it's all becoming one big world. And the good news is that you know that we get to meet so many different people from different cultures. But the bad news is that if you only are able to speak one language, you're not really able to leverage and take advantage off this amazing globalized opportunity. So what we're not going to be seeing is businesses, everything from entertainment. Uh, so if you really want to be able to fully expand and leverage all the opportunities that you can potentially have in your career, whether it's now five years from now or 10 years from now, you want to be able to, uh, to have that opportunity to do so right. So whenever an opportunity to come, you want to be makes you want to make sure that you're ready. So one quick information that we found was to be to be super interesting by Euro London is that learning a foreign language can actually add between 10 to 15% increase to your wage. And this is a topic women agency out of London. And they have seen some of the top executives to, you know, to to people that they have place all around the world and that they've seen that people that are bilingual people that are trilingual, people that can speak more than one language have shown to make mawr money. And if you think about it, it makes sense, right, because as the world becomes more globalised and you have a candidate A and candidate B, that our offer similar skill sets. But the company has call, you know, clients from China or clients from South America, which is becoming much more and more common. You know, client, be all the sudden Ursa uh, you know, the employees be becomes much more valuable to the company because employees be has skill sets another language that is, eyes that's in scarcity. In most cases, especially if employees you can speak both languages, you can translate one another. The second other benefit is that when you become more marketable, Uh, by adding biting another language to your resume, you all the sudden have more opportunities. As we mentioned, you know, there are new countries or new content and new companies from all around the world that are now going to be opening doors to you because of this ability to speak another language. And ultimately, what that allows you to have in your life is more freedom, right? More opportunities means more freedom because you're no longer confined to the job that you currently have to the city that you currently live. Now the whole world can open up to you as long as you can communicate with them and to be able to add value and language is the foundation that connects all of those factors. So what the British Chambers of Commerce has found in 2013 is that more than 60% of companies who want to expand to other countries are unable to do so due to language barriers. Now, this is what this is for, you know, nearing five years ago, which is super interesting because in the past 45 years, due to technology due to economic developments internationally, companies now are even Mawr International. They're trying to expand their barriers, expander regions even more so I I don't know what the updated stats for this is, but I would imagine it's more than 60% of companies today. So really, that's the lifestyle and the opportunity that you get when you learn another language. And obviously this is a huge opportunity for those of you guys that are able to take advantage of it. Second is better health. This is really speaking with mental health. I know Ah, lot of us are at least those of you guys that are into this that are in the webinar today. For sure. You guys have a high priority in your mental health and being able to develop your brain and to reach your full potential in what you are all about. Because, let's face it, all of our security human beings. And we want to be able to protect most important part of our bodies, which is the brain. So the American Academy of Neurology found this interesting information where they said that learning a second language can prevent or delay Alzheimer's and dementia by 4.5 years , and the compared this to the most powerful drugs in the world, which only delays the disease by 6 to 12 months. This is incredible. Incredible information, and the University of Edinburgh have found the millions of people around the world acquire their second language later in their life. So even adults can have a major impact on the brain itself, even at a later age, by learning another language. Now. Third is deeper relationships. We either have family members or friends or co workers that are probably from different cultures. Otherwise, we definitely want to be able to expand your circles. I mean, if we're only hanging around with people that speak our language that are from our cultures , you know, I think that is a huge miss opportunity because there are so many different cultures. Coming from me is just someone that loves to travel and meet new people. There is such an amazing world out there of people from different cultures. And I imagine most of you guys are already friends with people or have family members that come from different cultures. And that language barrier can be, ah, big obstacle when you can't speak the language of their of their tongue. So I think it was. Fourth is traveling. You know, travel can be a very standard procedure for most of us. You know, we go to trip adviser, we figure out what the most important things to do in the city is or at a country that you're visiting. And that's kind of the standard procedure than most of us follow. But it doesn't have to be that way. You know, travelling can be completely reinvented experience when you can speak the language of the locals because there's no one that knows a city or a place better than people that have been living it all around the world. It's not going to be a journalist on some media outlet that's going to know more than local . Think about your own local city and the little hidden spots that you know that very few people know. And not only that, it's It's really about living a more authentic experience when you're visiting a country rather than just being able to be in your comfort zone. So when you can speak a language of the locals, whether you are trying to learn Spanish, Ah, and they're going to be going to Argentina or Costa Rica, uh, or whether you want to go to Paris, and you want to learn French being able to build that communication and genuine relationship with the locals, there is going to be a big game changer, and it'll completely transform the way you travel. And speaking of travel, one of our one of our students, Gloria Tom Moe, who is actually a very popular travel blogger you guys should definitely check around. It's the blawg abroad dot com and what she uses she uses right regularly while she travels . And she says, What I love about right lessons is that with her crazy skin travel schedule, she could choose a time that works for her, and it will always be someone to accommodate it. So when you think about traveling, when you think about learning a language, those things can come hand to hand. But often people don't know that you can do it simultaneously while you are traveling and then last but not least, confidence. It is a huge reason toe. Learn a language when you can speak a new language. It's not only a new skill that you develop for yourself, but it's being able to communicate with people that you could have never imagined. 54 even, you know last year. It's a huge game changer, and that's been from me when I learned Spanish. And now I have lifelong friends that I've never imagined have having, you know, just a couple of years ago, and Lawrence and certainly developed. This is Well. Lawrence is an MBA graduate of Cornell University and is now the CEO of a company, and he hears himself getting better from his 30 minute lessons per day on Ripe. And this is something that's really boosted his confidence levels. So whatever reason that might be guys, what is your purpose for learning a language? You know what gets you the most excited when you when you think about some of the most influence two people that are have walk across this world and that we're still here today? You know a lot of them can speak multiple languages because they can now understand the world in a way that most people cannot when they only can speak one language because they think in a certain way, you know. So if you take the example of Will Smith, who speak Spanish, or Natalie Portman, who is a global phenomenon who speaks four languages in addition to English and Mark Zuckerberg, you know, CEO Facebook. He understands that a language is just the gateway for him to be able to understand the world in a way that's never been, that he's never been able to understand it in the past. And really, the mission for Facebook, as you guys know, is to connect the world, and it just goes to speak that learning that language is the foundation core to that. So tell us what gets you the most excited when you're thinking about learning a new language? 3. Learn the Right Words First!: Let's get to the first part, guys. One of the biggest mindset obstacles that most people have when they're learning the language is because most of us are too self conscious. We care way too much. What what other people think. There's so many limitations that they call it the glass ceiling that prevent us from really taking that big leap. And a lot of these are not only reversible, but these don't actually exist. These air just artificial limitations that have been placed to us by our own thoughts, by society, by the media by perhaps the way we grew up. So the number one key that you want to be able to set a foundation for and to really keep in mind is the art of embracing massive mistakes. This comes from when you're speaking with people this come from when you are, you know, on your own studying whatever situation you're in, you want to be able to embrace massive mistakes and not care what other people think. And one of the biggest things that limit us for a lot of people. His they tell us, I'm too old to become fluent, and we've heard this you know this excuse from people that are, you know, 20 years old to all the way to 65. And you We've had seven year old students that have come to us and became fluent in the language when before they were just telling us that they were too old to become fluent. And and the realistic answer is yes. It is easier from the ages of zero or so I 1 to 7 years old, to pick up a language, especially because we've never none of us. You know, that's just the way the brain is wired when you're super young. But there it's a It's actually a false, incredibly false assumption that people have when they think that they're too old to become fluent in any language is it is true that it's faster from 1 to 7, but it doesn't mean that you're limited at all. You know that's not the case at all, and this is an excuse that we hear so often. And there's a research, actually. But the University of Haifa, which has confirmed that adults can be better language learners than Children in often cases, and the reason is because adults have an intuition for unexplained grammar rules better than some of the younger, younger Children that are trying to learn our language. We've already learned the language, whether it's English, whether it's Spanish, and being able to learn another language is a much easier. It's kind of like you learning how to shoot a basketball and being able to make another shot when you have done it millions of times before. So we gone through all the grammar rule we've made all over mistakes with our first language. And that's part of the reason why we have the intuition levels and also the learning ability to pick up another language, often times a lot faster than some of the younger counterparts. So keep that in mind. It's a huge artificial limitation that it doesn't actually exist. So key number one guys is embraced mistakes and embraced the art of making massive mystics without carrying what other people think. So now let's get to the good stuff, guys learning the right words the right way. That's the second step, and what you want to do is you wanna learn 20% of words. They'll give you 80% of the knowledge. Now what do we mean by that? We mean, is there is this thing called the burritos law that we won't get into details up, but really, what that means is that there's a few vital tasks or activities or learning styles that impact 80% of the results. Right? So this could be you could implement this into your own life. You could say 20% of friends or people in my life whether it's your mom or your best friend , they impact 80% of your happiness. 20% of your costs or expenses make up 80% off what gets left in your bank account, right? It could be, um, it could be your house. It could be your your the rent. Do you pay in the house? You could be your food. It could be your car payments. You know, there's a few 20% off items that make up 80% of your expenses. You know, if your business over 20% of your customers could make up 80% of your profits. So this rule of the 80 20 applies in just about anything in our lives, and we're now just starting to see that we can also apply this in the way we learn languages. And the way we do that is what you want to do is you want to focus on learning 30 words a day, just even on the weekdays, right so Monday to Friday. Let's say you learn 30 new words. Just familiarize yourself with them and have a system to remember it, which will share. And the beauty of this is that studies have shown that when you can learn about 2000 words , you can familiarize yourself with 93% of the spoken language on. This is incredible information because a few people talk about this. But when you learn in additional 2000 words or an additional 1000 words, even from the 2000 there's a small small gain of 1.3% of the spoken language. So the way you think about that is, most of us have this ability or this habit off using the same words over and over again. And this applies to just about every other language, right, Whether it's Korean, Spanish friends, German, there's 20% roughly off small ah amount of words that we use common even as I'm talking Right now. There's similar vowels and similar words that I'm constantly using over and over again. That's why the rule of the 80 20 is so powerful, because when you can learn the 2000 even the 1000 most common words that every language uses, that is the real power of being able toe hack. Ah, how fast you learn language because there's a diminishing return on investment and your time when you start to learn words like idiosyncratic or Machiavellian or art barker words that you've rarely would use with friends or even at a business meeting, when you should just be focusing on the words that you will use on a consistent basis that are in everyday conversations with regular people. That's going to be the best return on your time. So that's why you want to focus on AH 1000 to 2000 most common words, which will help you learn about 85% to 93% off the spoken language. VAT alone guys is going to save you tens and tens of dozens of hours just by applying this rule off, focusing on the most common words and my suggestion of applying this into real action is using what we call the on key system. Yankees is tools a free tool, I believe. I think they do have a paid version, but it's a digital flashcard system that allows you to enter in a word on one end and then the definition on the other. And you can basically use this as a way to memorize new words in a much more efficient manner. I believe they also have. Or this is another company's called viz ed and these air more physical card. For those of you guys like that tangible ability to, you know, feel the court out, that's another one you can use. And this is God display of how it looks like, and another one that I recommend you guys is used. Memorize. That's n e and R. I s e dot com. I really hope you guys writing this down. Many of you guys may have heard of memorizes, not this new solution, necessarily. It's been out there for a while, and this that's another great version of ah, you know, tool that allows you to learn much more quickly. The most common words that were about to share with you. So hopefully that is a valuable lesson for those of you guys that are wondering where you should really prioritize your focus, its most definitely on the most common words. 4. The Power of Cognates: and you're also going to be blown away by this other strategy, which is the cognitive rule. So the power of calmness is so powerful in. And I'm surprised how few Paula Glass and linguists actually talk about how powerful and how much of a shortcut this is for so many so many language learners. Whether you're beginning, whether you are an intermediate and you can apply this to just that every language, that's the real power of something like this. And that's why I call it your best friend when you're learning a new language. So the quick history of this is that many languages share a common root. So whether it's, um, uh, should not be English, actually. So ignore that for those of you guys on here, but French, Spanish and Italian, they have the same common route, which is they come from their romance language that come from the Latin language and English and German are dramatic language. Is that coming from those similar routes? Now a lot of people share that English, ah, and and German, and they also share route way back, you know, with French, Spanish and telling. But But the point is the same rule would actually apply even with for Spanish and English. And that's the example that we're going to be shame with you today and to break it down. Cognitive are the different endings to many of the words we use in any language. That's why they call it borrowed words. So I'm gonna give you an example of what we mean. Take, for example, the words in English that you see that ends with T I A went right, So it's action nation solution communication Just a zone example. Now, when you translate this into French, what you find is every word that ends with T i o N shun will also end in shun in French. So whenever you see a word in English like action or nation that ends with a t i o n just apply that same rule for French. So I'm gonna give you another example just to give you an idea. This is really, really cool. Um, now, let's take, for example, the same thing with Spanish when you have the same words that end with Shaun T i o n in Spanish. All you have to do is add C I o n with an accent So instead of t i o n it's C i o n and every word that you see in English that ends with T i o n You could just apply it with C i o n for Spanish And then one more example of guys for Italian I'm gonna show you. Ah, for t i o n In English it will end with zed i o N e in Italian. So this is just one rule for some languages. Um, but you can apply this. There's so many rules. I believe there's there's definitely more than 12 rules Ah, cognitive rules that you can find online and I'll show you How do you find it? But think about how powerful this is, right? Just this rule alone. Let's say you're learning Spanish. Think about how many words in the English language that end or that ends with T i o n right . We just shared you fought for action nation solution communication. Um, and they're just so many words that end with T i o n. And what the powerful part about this is when you can just master and familiarize yourself with the rules for cognitive. Although the Senate you have thousands and thousands of words that have immediately been entered into your vocabulary bank for Spanish. So let's say you're trying to learn Spanish. All of a sudden, all you have to focus on is just learn these common cognitive rules that we're gonna being showing you and all of the sudden, now you know thousands of words in, you know, five minutes. Now, of course, you're gonna have to practice according to rules and really be able to understand and recognize it when you are reading or when you are speaking with someone. But think about how powerful that is. Guys, that's probably a loan saved you, you know, months and months off studying time. Because when you know the rules, you can simply skill that and apply that to just about everything that you're learning. And it's not just Spanish. Let's say you're learning. If you want to learn Italian after Spanish or vice versa, you can use the same rule and save you even more time in the end. So how do you find cognitive? So what you do is on Google, which hopefully holding all of us know or Yahoo were being or whichever you prefer, type in your language name and just typing cognitive or another word. Another way to put it out is type in the language or learning and then typing loan words. And that's what's going to help you find the most common cognitive ruled in the target language that you are learning. So hopefully this was helpful guys. Now the fourth thing off, what you want to focus on is learn. Frieze is relevant to your life. So what the Georgetown Medical University Medical Center have found is that when you're immersed in the language, there is something amazing that happens within our brain that actually portrays patterns of a new speaker just after five months. So that's the power off immersion and being able to surround yourself in an immersive setting because your brain pattern can actually change when this happens. So what you want to be doing is labeling, you know, home items that you can have all around your house like a bed or cup or your computer or your mike any of those things you can. You can start to kind of have that system and start applying these you know, pink sheets or pick notes to sticky notes so that whenever you're walking around the house , you can simply just recall these and it's a super easy way to learn. Ah, second quick, easy way to do this is to watch TV movies, even Netflix with subtitles. Um oh, and just to go back to this one thing that I recommend is if you're starting out, what I recommend is to listen to it with, you know, let's say you're learning Spanish. I would I would listen to it as a beginner in Spanish, uh, audio. And then I would use English subtitles. And then once you start to get a little better and understand the patterns of the Spanish language, switched that to Spanish subtitles. When you're reading when you're listening and then once you are more advanced, just get rid of the subtitles. Just listen to Spanish audio and video eso. That's kind of the progression you want to be following when your you know, watching a movie or TV show in a different language, and then another way to improve your writing skills. In this case, which will also has has shown to improve your speaking cells is journaling, especially if you already have a daily journal inhabit. You want to just be able to share what you're thinking and clarify your thinking process. Try to do it in a language because that has shown to dramatically help all aspects of your communication skills. So, um, on ultimately, what you really want to be focusing on is improving your speaking skills. So Benny Lewis, from the Fluid in three months, has said that the only way he reaches a smokin fluency very quickly is to get, ah, hell of a lot of spoken practice. And most of us can't. It's not like playing tennis. Where s so it's not like, you know, shooting the basketball where we can just kind of practice on our own. We can do that to a certain degree wind languages. But when it comes to speaking, you want that back and forth. Really life interaction. It's kind of like trying to play for his Be by yourself. It just can't be done. So that's kind of the beauty of learning the language. You want to be able to speak with a really human beings that can give you that riel interactive feedback 5. Becoming a Fluent Speaker (and Beyond): fifth guys is expanding your vocabulary. Now we talked about memorize a little bit before this. That is a huge way for you guys to kind of hack the vocabulary list. Now we did share that. You want to focus on the most common words first, and then understand how cognitive work. And then you want to be able to expand your vocabulary even further. So when you're thinking about memorizing a bunch of these words, the key thing that remember is using the power of pneumonic. So we probably many of you guys may have heard of Monix back in high school or elementary. But ah, the same powerful rule applies where Mont Monix are just used to help us remember much more efficiently. So used these moronic tools where, you know, if you're trying, remember colors. Roy G. Biv is the most common one, and you can try to come up with funny and interactive Monix that help you remember much more efficiently. Um, and then the the last tip for this is to customize the vocabulary off the industry or the purpose of you learning a language. So whether you are, if you're learning a language for business, you know, try to focus on business vocabulary. You know you can either ask your right teacher. You can ask, you know, Google on what are some of the most common vocabulary that you should learn for business. If you are looking to travel to Mexico, let's say, then you're going to get the best bang out of your time by focusing on Mexican slang or focusing on things that Mexicans say it hat, you know, other people from different cultures wouldn't say, and on the same thing applies to industry standards, whether you're going to music, education, health, food, so focus on and customized of the vocabulary for your purpose, rather than trying to learn everything at once and then last but not least, guys you want to reach mastery. And, uh, you want to be able to implement the strategies that would allow you to stay accountable over the long haul. And the key about this guys is again. You want to focus on the 20% of efforts that will result in 80% of the results. And when you looking at the four stages off learning when you get to that conversation fluency, that's kind of stage two. You're in the process, you're still learning. And now you want to be able to get to competence level. Um, so the obvious way to do this is, you know, kind of do some of the things that I've done, which is to go and travel to the other side of the world and to be able to, uh, actually interact with native speakers. Now even I can't do this anymore. Very few people can do this. None of us have the time. Ah, the the luxury of just, you know, outside capital. To be able to just go out, pack up our bags, book a one way ticket and travel to South America to learn a language. It's very hard to do. That's right. As I said, most of us, most of you guys listening, have full time jobs. You guys are ambitious people leading full time careers, or you're in school right now or you have a families to care of. So we get it. That's not something that's possible for most people. So that's why we want to share with you the three actionable steps that you can take so that you can stay accountable to being able to go from conversation fluency all the way to mastery. So the first thing is you want to be able to found an accountability partner, whether that is a teacher, whether that is a friend, whether that is a family member, that's also trying to learn a language. It's no different than trying to get in shape. I have this belief that willpower is hugely overrated, meaning that humans are humans for a reason were animals. At the end of the day, we all have our own instincts. Um, we all have our own temptations. There's only a certain amount of motivation we can get. And the good news is, if you know that. And I can admit that ahead of time, that's gonna be hugely beneficial for you in the long run, because you know that having an accountability partner, having someone that can push you and motivate you is going to be what's gonna help you succeed in the long run, right? So understand that motivation will go up and down as you go through this journey, having an accountability partner is going to be the different for you, whether you succeed or not, You can also attend language meetups as a way to continue interacting with real people. These were generally free. Chances are you have it in your local city. The only downside might be that they're not as often.
