1. Introduction and Overview : Hi. My name Pops. I'm a texture artist. I live in Germany. I work with pattern. I blocked friend and I also look digitally in this class. I would like to show you how to create repeating patterns in the f appropriate. I'm also going to show you how to make a great template on your iPad with the graphics, I will explain how to make a straight repeat pattern. And I will also explain how to make 1/2 drug therapy pattern. Thanks for learning with me. And I hope you will make a lot of great patent.
2. Creating Straight Repeat (lesson 1): In his first lesson, I will show you how to make a straight will be pattern in procreate probated supplied up with lots of great features, but it doesn't offer any rulers or guides or other means to have a grid on your canvas. Since you can import any image into broke grade and have it on a separate layer, you can just make your own grid and use it that way. You can either make a grid on your computer in a program like Photoshopped or it'll be on straighter. But at the end of this class, I'm going to show you how to make your own grid on your iPod. In the APP graft, I am also going to offer a good template that I made with the ref it in the Donald section of this class. To get started, you will have the opening document and procreate. It should be a square four months because you want to make a square shape pattern time. Please note that the template that I'm using in this lesson was made in photo shop and looks a little bit different from the template you can download and that I will be using a lesson, too, because that one was made in great just so you don't get confused. Next, you'll important template on the great actually consists of only two lines. Cutting the square and hot, vertically and horizontally like you would a square piece of paper that you pulled in half . Twice. I was taught this technique by someone who learned how to do repeat patterns waiting for their work computers, and you could do the same thing, was just a square piece of paper. And there's actually a really great, um, blaspheme sculpture by the wonderful Children Huffman, where she explains how to make repeat patterns with paper on a Cyrix machine. This is just to say that I didn't come up with this technique. It has been around for a long time. I'll just show you how to replicate this principle. Now that you have your can was prepared, I recommend renaming the grid layer so that you don't get confused, and next you'll need to create a you layer for your pattern and try not to grow on the quickly like Okay, next, you can start creating your pennant. In this first step, it is better to focus mainly on the center area like so And now I'm we need to make sure that we can select the whole canvas so that I mentioned stay the same work, the process and that everything will it on up. Everything will add up correctly in the end. But if you don't feel the whole campus, some appropriate will only select the filled area. Yes, you can see here, so we'll have to use a little trick. I added a mark in every corner, and now when I select this layer the whole canvas, we'll get selected. In the next step, you will have to duplicate, um, your pattern layer. And I recommend keeping one property off. This layer s a back up. I named mine original down here, and then you will need to copies off the layer to work on in the next step. And first, we will check the second layer so that it becomes invisible and, um, select the visible layer to move it over like the flare and make sure that down here, you're in the magnetic mode in the magnetic mode. If you are careful, you will see the blue line show up to guide you along with Senator, and you also can kind of feel a selection wanting to snap to certain places. And this will make it easier to get the selection to move to the right and still be perfectly center. That's important. Um, inappropriate. If you move parts off a selection awfully canvas, those will be automatically deleted as soon as you de select. And we're basically using this to delete the part of the layer we no longer need. So moving over all the way so that you basically, um, end up with the left top off your pattern. Next, you will make a second copy off the origin and lay off the simple again, and we will move that over to the right. I'm sorry. We're going to move that over to the left like so. And now you can see that the corner marks, they don't perfectly align. Sometimes they almost do. But I still kind of a nice point of orientation to see if everything it's where it should be. Okay, so, um, no, we will merge those two layers. We just moved around so that they will be one layer again. And, um, I know that layer. Step one. Now you can erase the corner Mark can raise the corner marks and you can fill in the new center off your her like so. And then, um, we basically repeat what we just did. A And you cardinal marks select your layer, so duplicates well there, say, for backup version and create two copies to move around. This time we will move our layers from the top to the bottom, earn from the bottom to the top. Make sure that my not a his exit. Mergea layers erased the corner marks. And now you can finish off your pattern by filling in the new MT. Center. Make your grid layer invisible and cure Don.
3. Testing Straight Repeat (lesson 1.2): next, you're gonna want to check. If you're pattern tile works out, you can either do that in a program that has a seamless pattern functionality like photo shop or Adobe Illustrator. Or you can do this. I'm procreate. First, select your pattern tile air and copy it into book Clipper. Next, you'll need to create a new file. Um, I like to use a rectangular format. I don't know. It kind of helps my brain obstruct better from the square shaped pattern tile, I guess from I like to use that didn't a four former, I think in the US that will be letter sized. And you can use your great template as a guide for Reese icing or pattern help sell creator file on, bring in your template and move it to the top like so. And now you can import your pattern layer from the clipboard. Um um, move it up all the way into the top left corner. I'm making sure magnetic is selective. Carefully resize it to fit the upper left square panels. No select um, the Reese Ice Thailand copied to the clipboard so you won't have to resize again. And, um, now chest copy and align your swatches until you, um, have filled up the hole and was very house. You just make they see less pirate.
4. Creating Half-drop Repeat (lesson 2): in the second lesson, I'm going to explain how to make 1/2 drop Repeat powder you're going to create and you square 10 bus and bring in your great templates. This simple looks a bit different than the one I used, unless one because it was made in breath. I'm going to explain how to make this template and listen sweet, and you can also download this template from the class material section Next, great and you layer to drawn. Or you can bring in ICANN's that you created, for example, in another file appropriate by copying the elements into the clip art and pasting them into your pattern s with the straight repeat, we will first concentrate on the Senate. Are year are packed, Petr. Next, I duplicated each I can too great a little like a library that I can use my pattern creating process, and I put them down here in their own. Then I merged all the pattern layers to get up so that I'll end up with one layer and to work with at your corner marks. Duplicate your powder layer, keep one down here, back up and create two layers to work with and the first step, we're going to move the top to the bottom and the bottom to the top. Merged layers, erased the corner marks and start bringing in. You're I can to fill the new empty center. You can't maybe even switch it up a little and flip some of your Aikens lyrically or her suddenly or taping. Next, you will move all the newly created Aikens out of your Eichel Ivory. You can merch them first if you want to and merge them with your actual pattern layer. And I decided that I wanted to bring in a couple more all a month as your corner markings Jessica over or layer pallet real quick. We have the grid layer, which I use as kind of a barrier between the layers I'm working on and my backup players. We have the original air on, um, the layer off our step one, which is the nature which is completed and up here. Um, we have Aiken library and, um, our first copy off are layer that we are going to work with next. Now. This is where it gets a bit different from the street. We really not to copy so far pattern there. But we that's going to become clear what in a minute, Just like before, though, we will start by making the extra layers invisible and selecting or, firstly, a copy and move it to the left. And now we will exit very minute layer copy and move it to the right and darling so that it allies with the bottom right panel, our grid and finally, the third layer copy. It will be moved to the right and up, so it fits into the top right panel, and you can already see how it's starting to line here nicely. It's like right merch all the layers so that you'll end up with a single parent layer. Erase the markings on start feeling you empty center from your article library, and I'm real. Murch told me I could Larrys with the pattern layer to make it one layer. As you can see, we still have some empty space up here and down here to feel that up. We can just repeat Step one. At this stage. She won't have to add anything to your corners. If they have already been filled, you could just create your back up copy on the two copies to move around, move the top to the bottom and the bottom to the top merch. And now you can feel your center. You can see the pattern coming together here. Uh, here. I just love when you start seeing the repeat appearances from nowhere, I think kind of magical. I actually like this empty space. But for the sake of this tutorial, and to demonstrate how to fill up the whole tile and make it seamless, I will just bring in some more ICANN's. We will merge all of our Aiken layers with the powder layer to create one final pattern layer. And you're done. You just made 1/2 drop. Repeat pattern tile.
5. Testing Half-drop Repeat (lesson 2.2): situs of your heart. Drop repeat tile. You will have to arrange your pattern squares in a slightly different way. This is where those pain lines off our grits and blood will come in handy. Each square needs to be opposite my heart. You will see how this works in a minute. First copier pattern their into the court, barred. Create a new canvas and procreate. I like to use a return to the form of Impart the ripped template and align it with the topple your canvas. And now bring in the pattern there and making sure monastic is active Resize it to fit the top left. How a copy of the small resize pattern square and pasted from the cook bar and upset it. So it starts from the middle off the first square, like so based in more pattern touts in the range. Boom. I'm so you're seamless parlor appears. You can see the difference from a straight repeat in the way the flowers, for example. Bigger ones keeping here are offset from each other in the kind of six second wait that can make a pattern feel less repetitive, but sometimes the straight with people nicely too. That's worth to experiment. Okay, That marks the end off the pattern making portion off the glass. I am excited to see all the wonderful patterns you're going to create, and I hope you will share them in the class. Perchik Collection place. Do they can't wait. If you have any questions, please leave fun below. I'm thank you so much for learning with me. If you are interested in making your own great template, I will see you and lessons a week.
6. Creating Grid Template (lesson 3): That's number three. I'm going to explain. How would you create a good template on an iPad? In the graphic, personable, Create a new document by clicking on the possible up here in the corner, you can choose between different types of catalysis. You guessed it. We are going to use grit and here's our canvas, and I named it great. Sample it, and this is where it looks like. We can really use it this way, since the grid and the canvas are not perfectly alive, and we need to be able to specify the absolute center off campus like holographic office, a variety of ways to just the crypt to your up here and click on this little your symbol. You can access a bunch of setting. First, let's change the size of our camera. I made it 2000 by 2000 pixel. Let's nice road number. Next, we will enter the grit and Buder studying and click on the option. Great spacing, and this is where the magic happens. The highest number you can have your grip spacing. It's 100 pick, and to have those slightly darker lines denote the center of vertical and horizontal axis. You also have to change the step value from six to 10 life that's already looking good, but you can go a step further and make it a bit more usable by making the color off the slightly darker lunch even darker. You can accept the color setting by clicking on the circle. I just go with that clicking on the back arrow appear a ball from the program to ask you if you want to say a few document. Sure, we want that and there you have it. You just make your own grid temple. You can export it by clicking on the share symbol on. Since I want to use it appropriate, it makes sense to say for two photos, I like to say my files at a resolution off 300 p. I also make sure that include, background option is checked on, since the great technical is the background and that's what we can. Thanks again for the time. Please share your plus four tricks with us. And if you have any questions, please see from below
7. How to Get Better Alignment (Addendum): Hi there. Um, a couple of people seem to have issues with alignment with moving around selections and getting them to basically get where they want them to go. And I thought I'd use this great you feature in IOS 11. That let's use green, recorded what you're doing on your iPad and even talk while you're doing it. Um, yeah. I'm going to try to show you in more detail how I move around things, and hopefully it will help you. Okay, I have my grid layer, and I'm creating a new layer. And I'm going to use the screen car and a wash brush that I like and just paint a couple of blobs like so on. Let's use a contrast in color and a slightly thinner brush to at more kings in the court. I don't like that one. Okay? I don't want either. Okay. Here you go. Um, let's duplicate our lair, make it invisible and started with this one. Okay, um, let's select everything and down here it says either. I think I'm guessing in English. It's going to say freeform, maybe a magnetic. Um, make sure magnetic is toggled on, and then I'm going to move my pencil into my other hand, or you can just put it on on your table, and I'm going to use my finger and, um, put it somewhere in the centre, off the cameras. I think it's good. And chest move slowly to the right and you will see him, Um, the blue line lighting up in the center and, um, just move it over slowly. And if you lose your position, just go back slowly, and it will just snap. It wants to snap to them. Um, grid. Okay, if you're not happy, it doesn't snap to the center, though, Um, if you're not happy with where, um, you hit the center, um, you can change to the free for mode and then tap with your finger. Very, And it will move in very small increments. Right now, I'm stepping to the left, and it's moving a very small increments to the left, and I can go back. I'm topping until I'm happy with, um, where I am, and then these legs And, um, you're good. Let's do the same thing with the second one. Um, you will have Teoh, um, experiment a little bit where it's best for you. Which position for your finger will work best for you? Um, when I moved from the left to the right, I put it in the middle off the canvas and know that I want to move everything from right to left. I don't know. I feel like natural year one to put my finger to the right off the campus, and then I move it over What I have found, um the more you go off, everything okay? So now, very good. That, um I made Samos again. I'm still in free form on, um, it won't work. There will be no help for me and the free for moat, um, by any grid or guideline or snapping in place. So I have to go back to magnetic, and I'm going to just go back completely If you hit now. You did, um, disappeared. The little X. Don't. Here in the, um, tool bar. Um, you can start over. Okay. Make sure you're in magnetic mode and move over to the right to the left, and you have your blue light. And I have found that the more you veer away from this initial place, the harder it is to get back. You see, the line is suddenly somewhere totally different. So if you feel like you lost it, see, it doesn't snap anymore toe where I want it, it's not. So if you feel like you threw it off by, um, going around too much, just use the X and go back to the start. So just go slowly and bear with the program. This is not a program that was made to do this. Um, it has no way off moving around things, um, along annex or why excess like photo shop or illustrator or, um, programs like that. This not a future off this program, it's a drawing program. And, um, it basically, once you to move things around into it stiffly and it doesn't snap to a grid, and that can be a good thing. Um, sometimes you don't want things to snap to regret. So, um, you would be happy about this. So they since they work around and it's going to be fiddly, and you will have to just give it time and bear with it and go slowly and figure it out, and then you can do it. It's It's going to work for you. I promise. So just go slowly. And, um you know, if you looser position go back into it, I move it over and just be you be slow. But, um justice, If I guess so, I haven't hit the middle again. So I'm going to do my little freeform trick again and move it with very small increments until I'm happy. And I until I think it's dead Center. Here we go. And now you would erase the corner marks and joining your players and just keep going. Yeah, Thank you so much for old. Ah, um, feedback you guys makes me really happy that you like making patterns and thank you for sharing all your great creations. I really loved seeing them. Okay, I hope this helped and yeah, have fun making patterns, I guess by you
