1. 1 Intro: Hey there. Thank you so much for joining me here in my first class on Skillshare. In this class, I'm going to take it through the process of making an orange came from polymer clay from the Charlson supplies you'll need the process of making and reducing the cane right to making and finishing some realistic miniature oranges. You can easily change the cause to make other citrus fruits or even use slices from this cane to make food inspiring jewelry or the decorative pieces so that any further ado, let's get into it. 2. 2 supplies: So let's take a look at this applies. You're going to need some polymer clay. Now these are the colors I use and I have provided at color mixing recipe for the exact comics isn't going to be using. But if you don't have these exact cause all friends, please use whatever you have available to you. But if you are going to be falling my clinics in recipe, it's a good idea to have some sort of small cookie or clay cutter like this. It's not an absolute necessity though, but I will get into more detail about that in the next section of this class. You will need an exacto knife and a blade to cut your clay. If you just go into making the cane and turning it into beats or something like that. You might not necessarily need the exact knife. Finishing diminish oranges. I use it almost as a replacement for my own hand to be able to pick up and shapes small portions of clay. So I do recommend having both at tapered silicone tool or if you don't have this small pointed ball tool or embossing tool will do the trick. Who need E10 tool? Now I'm using an average needle, but this could also be a sewing needle. It doesn't matter, it's going to give the exact same result. You'll also need some type of clay or on now technically you can rule out the clay sheets by hand, which is what this green embossing tool symbolizes. But in my humble opinion, it's just not worth it for any Cain, I highly recommend having something like a passive machine. I'm using the one by Lucy clay, but a normal POS machine will do just fine. You will need some sandpaper as well as a mold maker, preferably one that can be baked. I'm using this silicon-based mold party. You're going to need a toothbrush. And in this class I am going to be using two different ones at two different times, but either one will work perfectly fine. Additionally, you will need a few colors of acrylic paint. I'm using orange, yellow, green, and semi opaque white. And finally some small paint brushes and some Glaser vanish. The specific ones I'm using are female class plays as well as OK, on magic. I will explain why I'm using two different forms in the class itself. But if you just have one type of class glaze, perfectly fine as well, just make sure it's compatible with polymer clay because otherwise it might not set properly or you will have a turn sticky over time. And if you aren't going to be using this cane for making jewelry, you might consider using something like wrestling instead of the varnish. Just because it's going to be a lot more durable. 3. 3 color mix: The column mixing recipe I have provided will give you two shades for the pulp. One for the white portion of the orange and one for the peel. And the fifth column is just femurs Sahara without any mixing. One thing I will say though, is that the two cause for the pulp, very similar. It's basically just me being difficult. You're not going to see much of a difference. So if you just want to mix one of them, you can definitely do that. You may just need to mix a slightly larger quantity. So the way my recipes I'll set up is in pumps, meaning that you will need some way to measure a consistent amounts. The way I do this is by rolling up sheets in the same thickness and then using a clay or cookie cutter to cut out circles in the same size. If you want to mix a small quantity, you can use thinner sheets and on a small and Qatar. And if you want to mix a larger quantity, you can use thicker sheets and all and larger cut-off. And if you don't have a cutter, you can also just wrote out the sheet of clay and then simply use your blade to kind of squares that have the same size. So in my recipes, one circle is one pot. If the recipe calls for 1.5 or a quarter, etc. Just cut the circles in halves, quarters and so on. For the portions of clay I have here, I rolled sheet of clay approximately two millimeters in thickness and use the circle cutout that is 18 millimeters in diameter. I think you used the majority of the claim exists for the cane I made. I did have some small portions of excess from the pulp and the white portion. And as for the column for the PLO, I did have a lot of quantity on left of this one, but I have purposefully made the recipe to work this way is that you have enough left over to make the whole oranges as well. 4. 4 making the cane: To make the cane, we're going to start out with the darker shade for the pulp horn shape number 1. And you wanna wrote out of the log or snake no particular measurement. It's a good idea to have a small lump of white or translucent clay that you can use to rural between a hands to pick up any dirt August throughout. But even doing this, you may still transcript best arms your project. One way to get rid of this is just to take a plate or exact minds and scrape it across the surface of the clay. So you see me doing this. That's what I'm doing. Next, take the line of shapes with Paul O shape number two and do the same thing. I then put them together and stop stretching them to get a snake or a piece that was long enough for me to cut up into ten sections, one for each segment. And as I'm doing this, I'm also kind of pushing them too close together. If you prefer. You can also roll out longest snakes before putting them together. It doesn't really make a difference for this one. I just choose to stretch it in step. Next, you want to cut it into how elementary sections you want for your orange or citrus came. I choose to cut it into ten sections, but you can cut it into any number you want. And then for each segment you want to take a blade and fleck one side to form a triangle on teardrop shape. A couple of things to keep in mind when building up your cane is to not make these sections too short. The length of thes is going to be the width or height of the king. And making the K2 flat can cause problems when reducing the size later, but I will get back to that once we get to the reduction process. Another thing to keep in mind is that you want to as much as possible keep the shape of each segment for your cane even throughout. If the shapes are used to build the king on narrower near the center on one end compared to the other end. This means that the pattern on the inside of the cane is not going to be consistent throughout the king. So try to keep them fairly even. Once I have ten seconds, I laid them out so I'm able to decide in which ought I want them to be placed if there are slight variations in the size. So if some segments on locker than others left going to put quantum the smallest sections together and then all the other sections together, but rather mix it up a bit. Having slight variations in the slides can help out. So much food is rarely perfect looking, but you might not want them to be too different from one another. You don't have to make the king's exacting size as the one I made. But I am going to show you the approximate dimensions of my segments as a guideline for the quantity of clay I mixed. Next, we want to take the white mix and wrote August sheet that is pretty thin. I use my claim to rule out a sheet that was somewhere between 45 and one millimeter thick. And it then uses height of an embossing tool to roll it out even further. You basically just wanted to be very thin. Something else you can do is to gently pull ostriches sheet of clay, which is also going to decrease the thickness. Once you're happy with the thickness, you want to add this to our second segment. If you're working with an unused number of segments, one of them will need to be caught on just one side. And all the words, you need one sheet of white in between each orange segment. And once you've done that, you can put the two pieces together. Because this cane is made from an even number of segments, I like to first create two hops and gently press those against my work surface to make sure they're as close to being true half circles as possible. When putting the individual segments together, you want to try to not push or squash the signs. You want to keep the straight line straight so you don't end up with a wonky pattern on the inside of your final Cain. Although there is a way to correct at least some of that. So I will show you that once we get to the texturing portion, various going to be a natural gap in the very center. So you want to just add a snake off the white claiming to at least somewhat closest cap. And also form that white center you'll see in a real citrus fruit. Now put the two together and get the kainate general squeeze all the way around. This is going to help get rid of any spaces or pockets of error between sections on layers of clay to help fill out the gaps or ridges around the outside of the cane. Rule out a snake of white clay makes and put pieces of this into the caps. So I'm not being too careful about having these fit perfectly into the gaps or even be the same thickness. If you want a very neat cane, it's a good idea to be more consistent and maybe even you should play to help make these more triangular in their shape so they fit into the grooves better. But I needed to make sure that the shape of my final Cain had some minor flaws in order for me to show you how to correct that in the end. And also because this is going to be used for miniature oranges, it is fairly easy to correct, so I generally don't spend too much time making sure it's perfect up-front. Lastly, you want to add the final white and orange layers. The white, I added two sheets. One that was approximately two millimeters thick and one was around 10 millimeters thick. And then for the final orange layer, I added 11 millimeter thick sheets. 5. 5 reducing the cane: As I mentioned previously, don't want the cane to be too flat. And reason for this is that no matter wanting to you when reducing the cane, the ends are going to be messed up and end up a scraps. So if we pretend that the king is no longer than the area I've marked off using my blade. It's going to be pretty much all and pieces, meaning that that won't be much room for a good-looking cane once you've trimmed off the ends. So to reduce the size of the cane, I start out by rotating it in my hands, using the site of my fingers to add even pressure all the way around. And even though at this point you probably just want the cane so you can cut the pieces. I'll make the oranges or whatever. You don't want to rush this part of the process. Flossing this process or adding too much pressure too quickly can cause the inside to look distorted. And this is why I'm keeping this section of the class in real time only. So you can see exactly how long it took to reduce this particular king. When rotating and adding pressure like this, it is conscious thought reducing the size of the cane. And if you wanted to, you could do just this in combination with stretching as I would do for an irregular shaped just like on this little demo cane I made to show you. For an irregular shaped cane, I add pressure, not just using my hands, but if the cane has some fairly straight sides to it, I'll also press down against my works of us as I'm rotating it to help really keep those sides straight. And once a kid like this gets to a point where you can start stretching it, you just want to gently pull and stretch it must also trying to keep it close to the original shape. Now back to the Orange King. Once it's been reduced for a bit, I will start rolling it. To begin, what I do is roll it basically from the tip of my fingers to the base of my palm, then pick it up, move it back to where I started and repeat. This will ensure that you're roading out all type of the cane evenly because you're rolling out the cane back and forth on to shorter Getty's compared to the circumference of the cane. She also cause the inside pattern to come up crooked all bronchi. And finally, once I've got Nick reduced feather, I will stop running an app normally. 88. Trim off the ends to find where are the cane looks the way it's supposed to, and reduce it to the size or scale you want. You'll notice at this point that I cut my cane into three sections. The reason for this is that if starring and king for a while, at some point it'll start to become crumbly because it needs to be reconditioned. So if you are planning on storing caned for longer period of time, keeping them like this means that once you're ready to use them, you can roll them out and basically have them be almost as a freshly made cane. Once again, has been reduced depending on how soft affirming workplace you may want to leave it for a few hours or overnight to fill up a bit. If the cane is too soft, it can be difficult to get clean crisp slices. Additionally, when cutting the cane or slices, you want to use a sharp blade if you played is on the outside and if the clays fairly soft when cutting it, this can cause in-situ looks much. So waiting for the clay to firm up, sharpening the blade can help prevent this. Another way to help prevent this is to, while cutting, roading the king back and forth, rather than pushing straight down and rolling it back and forth will also help it keep the round shape. And I'll tip for making canes in general is to use clay of the same consistency. If you're using some cause of brands that are very soft, maybe you've just opened up a fresh pack of clay and other parts of your cane made using calls a brain is at a much more firm. This can also cause a soft apportions to reduce at a faster rate. So in any case, trying to use clay of similar consistency can help. 6. 6 texture: Before moving onto the miniature version, I'm going to show you how to add the texture on the inside, on a slightly larger slice of orange, just so that it's easier to see and can rolling the king back and forth while cutting it to help keep the slice as crisp and maintain the round shape. First, I added some light pressure using my blade. This is just going to make sure the surface is nice and even in cases I sworn perfectly cut. So simple way to help correct the shape on the inside, whether that is going to be these curves are ridges on the outside or make the lines more straight, is to take either the tapered silicone tool or the pointed and passing tone and push the clay into the right shape. Of course, this will be more difficult on a beat if you're going to have both sides be visible. But for anything where only one side is going to be visible, this is a simple fix to correct slight imperfections in your king. Next, use a toothbrush to add some texture to the white portion has well as the top surface of the pill. And then from the pulp, you want to use your needle tool. I like to make little curved lines almost as if I'm outlining an almond shape. And then just do this for each of the segments. I'm also using the needle tool to open up the center as this bit is usually not solid, but rather than place where the points from the individual segments meet. And I also like to just in a couple of areas, separate the pump from the white. Lastly, I used the fifth shade of clay, which is just females inherit to make the seed. This is where having an exact life really comes in handy. Once you've made the seed, you can use the X-Acto knife or the needed to just make room. Then place it in the orange and then flatten it so it sits flush against the rest of the orange slice. 7. 7 miniature oranges: When making the whole miniature orange is robotic ball of the comics for the pill. And then roll this in-between two piece of sandpaper to add texture. The grid off the sandpaper will depend on the size of your oranges. These 12, 12 skill oranges, approximately seven millimeters in diameter. And sandpaper I'm using is 60 and 80 grit. Av grid is probably ideal for the scale and use a tapered silicone tool or the pointed embossing tool to make an indentation on top. Careful not to add a lot of pressure as this can flatten the bottom of the orange. Use the same tool to make these kind of bumps are on the indentation ham finish off by making some lines using the needle. Then prebaked too hot and the clay. You can bake them directly on the sandpaper so you don't lose any texture. After baking, cut them in half, and use more party to make the mold. You can make the HMP miniature oranges without a mold. The mold is going to make it much easier to keep them, even to keep the edges crisp and to not lose any of the texture on the outside. One small party has set, removed the hub oranges and it's ready to use such make the actual halved oranges. Take your case. You should fingers to close the end and cut off a piece. Gently press it into a mold and cut off any excess clay. And then for the texture, we can do the same as in the last section of the class. So first add some light texture using a toothbrush, followed by adding the texture to the pulp using the needle tool. Opening up the center and separating the pulp from the white and some areas. And then if you want, make an add a few seats. If you're more parties not baseball, you can take the oranges out and then make them, but I'm making mine in the mold. So prebaked these. And then as a final step for both the hole and help argues, mix some of the green and white clay together. And precautions for this really is not important. You just want a light to medium green shade and add this to the indentation you made previously and bake the oranges one last time. 8. 8 finishing touches and project: When adding the final touches, I like to put the oranges on the tip of one of my needle tool to make it easier to see them from all angles. So first we're going to add a bit more life to the pill itself and give it more of a glow. For this, I'm mixing orange and yellow paint and a planar very 10, 10 layer. I'm adding more yellow to some areas and more orange to other areas. Or 12 tone to be a bit deeper. You can also add some green, though this is optional, so I just mix yellow and green and applied a tiny amount. For the green clay. You can add some shading using a mix of green and orange. And to get a shade for the highlight, just mix in some white paint. I did mention that I'm using a semi opaque white paint. If you don't have this, a normal opaque white will work as well. The main difference is sat, semi-opaque wide walk look as harsh, but applying an opaque paint more sparingly will give the same results. Then apply your gloss glaze. The outside of my oranges, I'm using the female clause glaze as it is thinner, which makes it easier to control the amount of shine. I don't want these to look super glossy, so I'm just applying a thin coat, the inside of the oranges. I'm applying some of the watered-down orange and yellow mix, focusing on the white portion but also dragging some of it on to the outer portion of the pulp. Mix, white and yellow and apply this against the grain, so to speak, of the texture of the pulp. This will enhance the texture and give the pulps are more dimension. And then to add gloss to the pulp, I'm using the achromatic this much thicker and it's really going to make the orange look nice and juicy, but a thick a code of the female gloss varnish will work as well. Just be careful not to add cope setup to think of this one as it came settle into the texture and make it look milky, and that's it. So as a project for this class, I encourage you to make a citrus cane and then use it for my project. Without that is to make beats, earrings, miniature oranges or something completely different.
