Orange Tree Oil Painting For Beginners

1. Introduction: With the first warm days or spring finally here, nature is the best inspiration for us. And today in this class, I invite you to dive into the spring and channel this inspiration into the Canvas. Hello and welcome to this oil painting class. Today you will learn how to create a beautiful rotary painting like this one. In this class, you will learn how to find the best reference photo for your painting. What tools and materials to use, there to start your painting and make it bright and colorful. Then we will create the painting of the orange tree. In the demonstration part of this class, I will be using oils. But in case if you want to take this class and you don't have oils, You can use any medium you want to create your own painting. This class is beginner friendly. So even if it's your first time using oils, by the end of this class, you will create your own gorgeous oil painting from scratch. I hope you're excited about this class as much as I am. So let's get started. 2. Class Project: The project for this class is the painting of the fruit tree. You can either choose your own reference photo, or the one I was using for this class. I will leave my photo reference attached in the resources, so that it will be easier for you to follow the process. I hope you will have fun taking this class as well as creating the project. And I can't wait to see your results! 3. Inspiration: Before we proceed to the demonstration part of this course and start on creating our painting, let's first search for inspiration and reference for it. As always, I recommend my students to use Pinterest for that. This is the easiest and most efficient way to find your inspiration. Sn the resources I will share the board with the photos of fruit trees. Let's you to the best suited to create a painting from. But of course, you are free to do your own search and find something that really inspires you to create. What you want to search in a perfect reference for today's painting is a clear and bright sky and juicy bright fruits on a green tree. Here are some of the best examples. A simple composition like that will help you to focus on the colors and shapes of the fruits and leaves. Because the painting will be all about colors. We don't want the exact same copy of the reference. Instead, we want the mood, spring inspiration, warm sunny days on the canvas. I personally chose this photo as a reference. I love the color combination of the clear blue sky, oranges and green leaves. I will leave these reference photo for you in the resources as well. 4. Sketching The Composition: Great, We've made it to the demonstration part of this class, and now we can start on creating. First, I'm using yellow ocher paint to briefly sketch the composition of the painting. I have diluted the paint with a few drops of linseed oil so that it will be easier for me to make the marks on the canvas. The painting will be really simple compositionwise. Still, it will help us to establish the general shape of the fruit tree. And so we're starting with the main foundation for the tree. We defined the branches. Keep in mind that you will be painting over the sketch. So you don't need to include every single detail as you sketch the composition of your painting. As you can see, I'm not spending too much time on this stage of the painting. I'm not adding any details to the branches at all. Of the needed here is to define where we will have them and in which direction they will are gone. That's all we need on this stage of the painting. As you can see, I'm trying to stick with the reference photo, but I'm also free to add a branch anywhere I want. So don't be afraid to modify your painting according to your needs. Once we have defined the branches, we can now paint some oranges here as well. Or whatever fruit you are planning on painting today. And once again, we are simply defining the shapes, sizes, and locations for our future fruits. Later we will block in the colors to them and you can even cover some of them with the paint. And the last detail we want to sketch for the painting are the leaves, as we did it with the branches and the fruits. We define the approximate shapes, and location according to the reference photo. with some modifications that we want. And once your underpainting is finished, you can proceed to the next stage of the painting. There we will start on block in the colors to the background sky. 5. Adding Background Sky: After we have the canvas prepared and the general sketch maps out, we can start on blocking in the general colors. So let's first establish the background and start with the sky. Adding the ground color will help us to define the shapes for our branches and leaves and also to make a certain color statement for our painting. Now, on the reference photo, you've got a bright clear sky. And I want it like that for the painting as well. So now I'm mixing some blue color with the white paint. Keep on adding some white little by little until I get the desired blue for the sky. And once you have premixed the paint you can grab your big brush. I'm using this synthetic brush size 35. And you start covering the background. You can also add here white clouds or use any other colors for the sky you want. It's a perfect opportunity for you to be creative and use your imagination. 6. Adding Oranges: At this stage of the painting, we can block in the main colors to our oranges. But first, let's mix some colors for them. For oranges, we will mainly use orange oil paint. But for the first layer, let's add some yellow ocher to the orange paint to make it slightly darker than the pure orange. You can use the paint left from the first stage of the painting process where you were sketching out the painting. But why do we want to start with a darker value of orange? You may ask. Well, the answer is that we are going to start on layering the darker shadow areas of oranges. If you look closely at the reference photo, you can see that our oranges aren't simply orange. Instead we can see how the fruits catch the sunlight and the shadows from the leaves, which brings various values of colors to them. And as we want to recreate this in our painting and add more depth to the oranges we will be layering darker shadow areas of the fruits. Don't worry if you covered too big areas with darker colors. Because later we can apply lighter colors on top of them. And once you have covered all the darker areas of the fruits, we can now use the lighter color value to cover the rest of the oranges. I’ll start with the pure orange oil paint Just look at the difference between those two colors. And as we applying the lighter orange, we can instantly see the difference it makes. Later we will add even more lighter values of orange to make them really stand out and add that beautiful sunlight. But first, let's just finish this stage of the painting process. And then you can give your eyes a rest from all the oranges and work on the leaves. It's always a good idea to switch between the areas of your painting so you won't be bored and exhausted by work and then working with only oranges. So once you have added enough colors, I will see you in the next stage of the painting process. 7. Adding Leaves: Now, as we did on the previous stage of the painting, we will start by blocking in the darker values of colors. Because if you look at the reference photo, you will notice that the leaves, same as the oranges, catch the sunlight and the shadows. And that's why there's so much depth and colors in them. So we'll start with the darkest values of green. And little by little we will be layering lighter values of green and yellow. This approach is really simple and effective and it will help you to add depth to your painting as well. You can start your first layer of these by using dark green oil paint. Or you can make it even darker if you mix green with a bit of burnt sienna, the darker the first layer you make, the more depth and contrast you will be able to create later for your painting. And once you have added just enough dark and leaves the painting, you can then mix the green paint with some yellow oil paint to make the color lighter. Keep on mixing green and yellow together until you get the color you like. Then you can use a lighter green to paint more additional leaves on top of the darker ones. And so just like that, you keep on adding leaves to your bending until you like the result. And on the next and final stage of the painting process, we will close all the gaps and will add the last details and colors to our oranges and leaves. 8. Finishing Touch: Congrats, You've made it to the finishing stage of these glass. Together we have sketched out the fruit tree branches. We have add to sky background and blocked in the colors to the oranges and leaves. Now it's time for us to close all the gaps left to add the finishing touch to the oranges and leaves. This is where you can add more lighter values of colors. So I'm going to start with the leaves. For that. First, I'm mixing in the yellow and add a bit of white to the green. Everyone to get really light color to layer it as a highlight to the leaves. And so just like that, we are blind the final strokes to the it in the light and the center of the painting. As you layer light green leaves, make sure not to cover too many leaves to live it, so that the darker leaves won't disappear. Because we still want all the colors and leaves to be there for the depth and contrast on our painting. And once you are satisfied with the lips, you faint. You can now add the finishing highlights to the oranges as well. For that, I will be using lemon yellow and I will apply the thicker layer of paint on the areas there I want the light to be. And as you do so you can instantly see the result. How a singular stroke of band as life and energy to the fruit. And the last thing I want to do here is to grab my big brush loaded with a bit of blue oil paint we used at the beginning of our painting. And I will just supply few big strokes here as if to connect all the elements are the bane thing together. You can also lay a few less strokes are on top of leaves and even oranges to make your painting more dynamic. And I get JSON. And once you are happy with the result, they can finally Sania painting.
