Lettering on iPad for Beginners!

1. Intro + iPad Apps: Hey, guys, it's Kristen. Quite Sundays, and I want to go over my favorite lettering. Cool. Today, my favorite lettering tool is the iPad pro in the apple pencil, using the procreate app. The iPad Pro is an amazing lettering tool and using the apple pencil. It's just like writing on this course. I want to show you the basics of I find littering, all the things I wish I knew what I got, my first iPad pro and my apple pencil. I want to go over my favorite out how to such a pressure cooker and how to make a campus. Then I also want to give you some little tips and techniques that make. I felt lettering really easy. If you're interested in that kind of thing, keep watching for my part to toil. I'll be using my I thought pro and I have a 12.9 and drive by pro, and I have the apple pencil. It has a little grip on it. I got it from Amazon. I don't remember exactly what the brand was, but it was like $10 or so. The grip is probably the best part of the apple pencil. Frankly, I mean that pencils great. But to use it for a long period of time, you're gonna need some kind of grip for it or your hands gonna really start to hurt. So I have a first generation iPad a pro, 12.9 inch, and I have an apple pencil with a pencil grip on it. So once you've made sure that both your apple pencil and your iPad pro discharged, um, you're gonna turn it on, obviously. So that's just my thing. So I have a lot of different drawing APS, but my favorite drawing off is procreate, and it's a soul guy right here. Procreate is, um it's like a $10 app, and it has pretty much every feature you can imagine when it comes down to drawing. I do have other APS I have graphic, which is this guy right here. That's pretty fantastic. This is a font making app, and this is Adobe draw or something. It's Adobe's something I'd obey. Sketch. I think this is a job, A draw. This is a job. A sketch. This guy here is a mazy a graph. It will. It can make like patterns and mandalas and things like that. And then in this little app here, I have many bang. Never use it paper. Never use it. That guy that's been waiting for a long time never use it. Um, so, yeah, I have a lot of ass on here, but I really only use pro grade. And I do use graphic a lot, but we'll go over graphic and another to toil. This is just gonna focus on procreate. 2. Pressure Curve + Project 1: So let's open procreate again. I have stuff just open all the time. Apparently so, um, this is pro grade. This is all of the stuff I have just saved on here. I clearly have a lots of little things. Um, so when you first get out in pro great, you're not gonna have all this. What you're gonna have is just some basic canvases and, um, our go over a detailed canvas tutorial in a minute. But let's just get start on the really basic stuff about procreate. So let's just pick screens, guys. Okay, let's just pick screen size here. That one will dio. And, um, the first thing you need to set four year iPad is your pressure curve. Let's see. So we're going to go to preps, and we're going to go edit pressure curve right here. So we're gonna reset it, cause mine obviously is set to me, but we're gonna reset it. And this is where you kind of decide how heavy or light have your life. You know, your pressure is gonna be some people are really heavy handed. And if you are than the probably the basic pressure curve is gonna work for you. I'm actually extremely light handed. I don't press very hard when I do for us very hard or when I pressed what? I think it's hard, I expected really thick line. And it doesn't always happen that way with the basic pressure curves. So I do edit the pressure curve to fit my more natural style of writing and what we're going to do. We're going to start out with, um, doing some examples, and I encourage you to play around the pressure curve to see exactly how you like it. Uh, so let's just go again. Let's go to the paint brush here and we're going to select calligraphy and we'll pick this brush pin right here. So ah, one thing to note is that if you're starting out appropriate for you, actually have all of these already said, except for the painting brushes, that's not going to be there. But sketching all the way down to retro, actually, yeah, that should be sketching down to retro and then luminant industrial organic water. You should have all those when you open your procreate app. And this is just a new update that they gave, um, sometime in November, I think. And it just included all these new awesome Russia's. Because we before we have been having to buy and make our own Russians. But after this update, you don't even need the bar brushes. You can literally use everything on your iPad to make amazing stuff. So I'm gonna select brush Ben, and then we're going to practice the pressure curve. So the first thing I think you should do is go ahead and write something with it set by default, because you have to see where you're going and how it feels in the beginning. So let's just right procreate. So Okay, so that wasn't too bad, But I'm still gonna play with it. So lets just slide this guy up. So sliding this guy up, So what? I just did this. I made it more sensitive right here. So, um, like, sensitive to the lightness, Basically. So how I had these really thin lines, I have to work a little bit harder to get them the with second curve. No, I'm a piece of small whatever. So I don't actually like that. So we'll take that down a little bit and let's just try for kicks pulling this down. So I got you got I got a little bit with dinner line here, but now I have to press a lot harder to get these down. Strokes definitely don't like that, either. So, um, let's put that back to normal. We can even, like, slide it into, like you been slighted end as well. So let's try sliding it in. That's actually really natural for May, um, and also let's go ahead and put that back to normal. We said inside, and that's really close to what I would consider normal for me. But since we're kind of still doing it, let's just try a couple more. Um, ignore me. I'll explain later. Layers in a minute. I'm just particular. So we'll hide that guy and we'll start on nuclear. So let's try for kicks. Let's try bending it so we can bend it up or down. See? And I'm gonna bend it. Uh, so that's really cool. Um, bending it up definitely changed it. It made, um, the rotation different, which is cool line line variation is extremely interesting. So I like it like that. I'm gonna leave it like that for my pressure curve 3. Other Preference Settings: He's a winter pressure, Corvis said. Let's look at the other stats that make up the basic premise. One thing is right. Interface versus left hand in her face. So when you start out there assuming that you write with your right hand, which is why the sliders are over on this side, the reason for that is because when you're writing, you'll slide this way with this hand and you won't enter up to your work over here with your right hand. If you're right handed or left handed, rather, you will switch that and you'll put it on this side. I did use it like this for a while, but it was extremely annoying because I had to stop every single time I need to do something, and it just wasn't really very useful. I'm also not left handed, obviously. So put them back where it is. The brush cursor. Um, it showed. I know you probably can't see this, but the brush cursor is where it shows the circle of the brush. Uh, while you're writing so you can actually see the little circle of the brush and where it's gonna land, I prefer to have that against one of those options for if you want it or not, if you don't want it, I like it. So I keep it light interface again. It's one of the optional things. If you like how it looks and does give it that, you know, Saturday morning cup of coffee with the messy bun kind of look. I mean, I'm a hipster, too, but that's how I feel about the light interface. So I like the dark interface. Better these guys again, This is partly you can change it if you want to, but I feel like the factory settings a kind of perfect, rapid, undue delay means that when you're undoing things, you can only do one delay per half a second or one, Uh, undo, perhaps second. So if you type, if you tap both fingers on your iPod, it'll undo something. But you can only undo it once every half second, which is perfectly reasonable auto hide interface return. That is where when you wait, these things will go away once you start drawing, so you have to actually be drawing for them to go away. They don't just go away while you're sitting right, because the auto come back when you stop drawing. But that's, um, if you want to change that and you can change that to selection mass visibility again, just leave it the way this it's not really that important. The next thing is connected your third party stylist with an apple pencil. It automatically connects when you said when you connected to charge it, so you don't worry about trying to ST get anything like that. It's always think unless you turn there, I cut off for Europe, Mental dies and you re sync it. But no big deal on that. With 1/3 party stylist, you will use this connect third party Silas to make sure that it thinks with your iPad the last day it's advanced gesture controls. So all these things are basically how to do each thing. Your advance sister controls are literally just that. I actually really use this because I find it more annoying than it really is helpful. But a lot of people absolutely loved to use advanced gesture controls. The one that I use the most generally is the eyedropper, and the eyedropper allows you to select different colors, and these are the all the ways you can do that. So what does hold this in touch? Hold? Hold the circle into apple pencil touch Hold all continent tap that. You know those the ways you can make the eyedropper pop up so you can change. So, like the color already on the palate. The quick menu is a thing that I try to use, but I don't use it nearly enough. But if you select it, it'll allow you to touch and pull up the quick menu. So let's just show you what I'm talking about. That's the quick menu, so you have to touch with your finger. Developed the quick, quick menu, and you can set all these things you can set. Which one goes with what so you can set the action when you pull up the quick menu. I just don't really use this enough. I think I type attack the screen a little bit too much on accident to use a quick menu. I also I do a lot of painting along with lettering, and I feel like I would have it selected for painting. I wouldn't have it as an option for lettering, so I just tend to turn it off all the time. Um, so, yeah, that's the quick menu, and I'm gonna turn that back off, and that's really it. So those air, the really basic things about getting started with your iPad. 4. Canvas Sizing: Okay, so now we're gonna talk about canvases. If you just haven't iPad for fun. This is not really something you have to worry about. But if you're using it for work, or if you're going to sell anything that you're going to be using on it, it's really important to understand what size you need to be able to have a good print. So that's why I have all these options here. You can do create custom options, but I have only selected because it's inferences. No book cover is one of the, um, sites I use for making items. Needs this size pixel. Nope. Recover same thing with Facebook. Share Pinterest pen that these are all just standard sizes for a lot of things always dio the same thing with 8.5 by 11. But I actually most often used the screen size referred and the high rez and the tea service line. So the screen size preferred. That's one that I made up. It's basically the same size as my iPad, but the DP I is higher, so I think we can pull it up. Let's see if I can and it Here we go so yeah, this is a custom canvas and I call it Spain's Eyes referred and the with is the same as the the iPad and the height of same guy fat but my dp iess 600. So what that means is, when I go to import this into Photoshopped, I get a higher resolution. Peace. Then I would get if I had used a lower d. P. I not can still make this bigger, but with this dp, I gives me a 300 d p i eight by 10 front, which is pretty much I mean, that's good enough for me. I can make it into a vector image. If I need Teoh, I usually don't. But if I need it to make it into a vector image, there are ways to do that really easily in Illustrator. If you're interested in learning how to make a vector image and illustrated by all means, let me know. I will make a video on that to our tutorial on that too. So, um, if you're saying that, let me know. But for this I just use much means I preferred and the maximum layers that I have on this option is 91 if you increase the DP I This is my mistake. I'm sorry. View sdvi. It just makes the size of the piece smaller. So, um, for example, I told you that I could get a ah, 300 dp I, um printable image of eight by 10. With this size, I would still get that, but my original size will be smaller when I imported. So right now it's probably like to buy three. It will be like one by 1.5 with a d p i of 900. If you want to make a high quality print and a bigger size, you have to just increase your campus eyes. Which is why I have the high rez. My high rez. You see, it has 19 layers. It's basically double the size of the screen size. Preferred with the same dp I 600. I don't know if you can see it. Let me. I don't there will just put it back on. Okay, so it's double the size of the screen. Size. Preferred only has 19 layers now. I'll be honest. 19 layers. It's kind of tight for me, but I make it work with my drawings? I tend to use only one layer anyway, or maybe two. But with the lettering I tended, I might do a project that does have a lot of layers. Encompass it. And I'll just break it up into pieces of like, you know, part one for two because I'm keeping up with certain brushes and I'll just copy and paste and lying delete. You know, it's a little bit of a headache, but at the same time, to have a good quality print to begin with is actually really useful. So I don't have to open another program just to make a mental image. So, yeah, these are the two that I use the most, the screen size preferred for basically everything and then high rez for things that I particularly want to be high risk. The worst thing is when you start out with screen size preferred and you can only switch your campus around. You can't edit the canvas once you've already made it, which is one down side about procreate. But again, it's not like the biggest. Like I said, there are ways to take it illustrator and make it into, ah, make it into ah vector anyway, 5. Streamline + Project 2: So let's talk about flares a little bit more. You see this, um, kind of like a box thing. This is the layers. When you start out, you have a background layer and your layer one you can't draw on this layer it on lee is about the color of the background. You can also, uh, hide it, and then it will give you a clear image. So if you want to save something without a background, you can hide the background layer and then save it and you'll have a transparent project. That's the background. This is layer one, so you can add layers by pressing this button right here, plus plus plus plus plus. So if you select one layer, you want to like multiple layers to say from Shaver Project, and you want to like most players and merge them together. You can slide them together like this, or you can select him like this and group them. It won't merge it, but you can group them together using this little guy right here and then with that, you can merge down or flatten, so you'll take all your group layers and you'll flatten them at the end. Or however, when you want to do it also with layers. If you If you've ever used photo shop, you will be familiar with all these options. There's a pass today, so you can like up. I'm sorry. Let me just draw something so we can, But Okay, so we'll take that. Um So now let's look at the later so you can do a passivity. Could make it heavier. Um, lighter or darker. Normal is pretty much what you're gonna use for everything. These other ones are fun once you I know what you're doing. But most of the time, you're just gonna is normal. And now let's talk about brushes. Okay, So let's talk about brushes. Um, you have a 1,000,000 1/2 brushes when you start out with procreate for and they did a lot of updates to these brushes, so it's a lot more advanced than it used to be. I'm not gonna talk about how it used to be because it's Ivan important. But if you go to due to the calligraphy section, you will see all these options minus chalk around. That is when I made up. But let's just select brush print. Let me show you all the options that we have under this. So the most important thing under this is really your streamline. Streamline allows you to write more smoothly. So if you have a shaky hand or anything like that, it makes it a lot Mawr smooth. I usually have much in one set about halfway or a little less than halfway. But I encourage you to just practice and see exactly how you want your streamline. So the first or while the second project second project for this section is going to be streamline. So what I want you to do is select your brush pin, start out with Jane line None. And right, So we're gonna write the word Tuesday with zero streamline. Your next brother project is going to be to take your streamline to about halfway and write the same word again. And then the last part of this project is to take it all the way across. Actually. Sorry. The third part of this project is taking all the way across, and you're gonna write Tuesday one more time for another time just to see how it all right . And then the last part of this project is to select where you like it the best and do it one more time. So I absolutely hate this. No, I hate how that looks. I can't even draw. Found the face because it's too streamlined. I absolutely hate it. Okay, this is better. And this one, I mean, honestly, I can see what my lines are shaky, but really, I had a lot of practice not using a streamlined because streamline is a new thing that came with the newer up. It's appropriate. So I before had practice without streamline. So I'm actually really good at making them look very uniform without using streamline. I prefer, like I said, toe have it around a little bit like 27 ish area, 20%. That's kind of my sweet zone. So when you pick your sweet zone right Tuesday, one more time. There you are. Starts project to 6. Project 3, Part 1: Lettering Your Quote: Okay, So the last thing I want to do with you guys in this procreate tutorial is walk you through actually doing a quote, The reason why I want to do this because I feel like there are a lot of things that I probably I'm gonna forget to cover if I just don't do a quote and most of the time you learn by actually doing and not having it just explained to you. So let's pull up a new we have. All these layers was picking the layer, and the first thing I want to go over is I Actually, there's a grid and it lives in textures. So go click this grid and we're going to use it to draw on our campus. This is the wary prep for lettering. And then on top of that, what I'm gonna do is I'm going to lower the capacity of this and add a new layer on top of it. So we'll strike this here, switch my color to black that I'm going to select my calligraphy and my brush pen, and I'm going to start writing my quote now. So let's do some test strokes Too big. Still a little bit too big. All right. Perfect. All right, so my my quotes gonna be common sense is not so common. So let's start writing. So we have almost all the quote done, and what we're gonna do first is we're actually going to instead of writing comment again, we're going to do this little tape looking tool and draw around the common that we already wrote, swipe three fingers down and then copy and paste it, so we got another copy of it. Now we're going to use the point or tool and drag it down here. So now we've copied and pasted that Don't write it again. So it looks kind of like a mess right now, right? We're gonna fix that, too. So the other thing we're going to do is we're going to go ahead and merge down this second version of common, and now we have everything on the layer again. We're going to start shifting things around. Um, let's start with moving sense. So go back to your tape, select your tape, and then when you want to move it selected the pointer tool. Now, we can move this around. If you look down here Weaken Dio a magnetic or freeform magnetic means it'll snap to a grand used to these lines That'll keep it this way or this way or this way 34 means you can do whatever you want. You can also flip it, flip it, rotated and then these other things on and then you can undo it. And that kind of stuff. So what I want to do with this sense, I want to actually stretch it out. So I'm gonna pull this on this side. I'm gonna pull this one on this side. I want to stretch it out so it fits under common, but it's a little bit bigger than common because it's a smaller words. So let's just play with that for a second, all right? We'll leave it for now, So we'll leave that for now. I also want a shift comin over to top comment just a little bit so you can tap if you want to just nudge it a little bit. You can tap with your finger on the side of where you want it to go. So I'm just trying nudging it over just a little bit and then we'll leave that there. So now I want to move is not so again. We'll do that and we'll take this here. I'm gonna make this a little bit smaller, cause it's not. These aren't important words. Some gusts shrink these down a little bit, Stick them right up under here. What? Like so And then I'm gonna move the last common up here as well. So I also want to make this little bigger. So if you pull, if you have magnetic on and you pull a corner, it will keep its shape and just move proportion proportionately larger. Okay, so now I can hide the grid. So I'm gonna uncheck this box with the grip on it so I can get a look at how the quote looks solicitous of other changes. I actually don't like how the sense looks. So what we're gonna do is we're gonna erase. This is the eraser button. And the eraser actually has the same amount of options as your brushes. Dio as your paintbrush does. So I tend to use, um good artistic, no good airbrush. I use the hard brush as my eraser for the most part, and I'm going to erase the sense. Are there other ways you can do that? You can actually probably select it and then delete it. That's another way. But I just decided to use it that way. Now I'm gonna write since again in my little scope of area that I have here. No, I don't like that either. Okay, so let's see. Let's put the great back onto There we go. I like that and I can actually let's just go ahead and do that. That's cute. We'll leave it. All right, So side of the great again. That's my quote. Now what if I want Teoh? I'm gonna just move the whole thing centered. Make a little bit more centered. That's a quote. So that's how you do a basic load and pro grade 7. Project 3, Part 2: Cool Effects: So let's talk about some more fun stuff you can do with it. The first thing is, if you go to the layer and you hit select, you can change the color of just the words for this. We're gonna change to the hard brush. Yep, so you can change the color of the words. This is not the most effective way to do is to be honest, it usually leaves some some mistake. So if you look really closely here, this is not solid, and it just doesn't look very good. There's a little line, a little darker line all the way around. It doesn't look very good, so this is not the best way to do those. But you can do it like this if you want to, so let's undo that. So let's tap twice, and we'll undo coloring. There we go. So let's leave that. And the better way to do it is kind of using the same technique. But let's start with selecting it and then let's make a new layer so the nuclear pops up there. A race are, well, uncheck the spot. So now you can see the letters that we've selected, but they're on the new layer, and now we can color it in on the new layer, and that's a much cleaner way of doing it. And it also even keeps the slight bit of shadow the capacity that we have using the brush so we can be done with that. And that's that's the better way of changing the color if you want to be a solid or even if you want to be different colors. Or however, another thing you can dio is this. Going back to the black is using screen to change the color of your piece, and I'm gonna show you that. Let's see, let's do kind of Ah, hold on first, make a new layer. Don't go in the layer that don't go on layer of your work. Go on the next layer and you make a new layer and then you color it. So let's just I'm just gonna color two things. Number one you can smudge it so smudge will bring up this, and you can like smudge the edges of the peace. Naturally, the other option, if you don't use much, is you go to adjustments and we can do Garzon blur so we want to do is we let this slide the blur as far as they want to until it looks nice and smooth. So I'm gonna leave it there. We also can change this terrible color so you can change the hue exaggeration, Take the hue and you can change it to different. So we'll just reset it and leave it the way it waas. So then you have this, but you can dio as you can take this and go to lighten and quick screen and then see you have the color that you wanted on the black. So screen works by whatever is black in your piece before that's what will strain. Basically, it'll screen all the black to a different color. So those are two different ways to change the colors of your piece. The other thing that I love to do is almost like painting with white on top of it. And you could do this by two ways. The easiest way, of course, would be to make a new layer. So Okay, so now we're gonna paint. We're gonna make are quote white on top of this background. So the first way, of course, is. What I showed you before is select this. Make a new layer, hide this layer and then said the color toe white and color it in. This is Option one. The other option is dumb, and I'm not going to suggest you do it. But I will tell you it anyway because I did it for a long time before I need this life just way. The other option is to do the same thing, select and erased on the color layer. So say friends, you want to do kind of like a play on the colors. You're gonna race it out on this one and you can make another blurred background and it'll show through in the words. So let's erase it out on this one too big. Okay, so this is the race Now. You'll see it right there and then we'll weaken. Dio is we can make a second layer right, and we can make another blurry thing. So we'll just hide this for the moment and we'll make another blurry thing. Let's do different. Let's do like darker, smoother colors. Here. Let's use the 1000 Blur to blurred again. Nice and smooth. And now, if you show this layer again. I mean, like, this gives me a little bit of a headache, but it's just a cool effects, so you can do it either. One way there's not a right answer, but either way is fun. With this way, you can merge the layers with screen. You can't really merge layers with screen. Let me show you the problem with screen real quick, so we'll use this one, and this one will do screen the issue of screeners. You can't merge the layers, so if you go to emerge down, it's not going to be the same as if you had done it on a new layer instead. So let's just show you that's what happened when you scream. It doesn't work the same, so we can undo it like that. The other thing about screen or about the iPad is that you can't inverse select anything, so if you select it, you can't then in verse select so I can't ever go from having the word selected to flipping and having the background selected just can't do it, or if there's a way to do it, I don't know how to do it so I can't tell you how to do it if you figure it out or, you know, let me know, because I'm I'm not, you know, perfect. But those are just two ways that I are a couple ways that I love to play around with lettering in the iPad. 8. Exporting Your Work: now to export it. You go to tools share, and you can share it Appropriate document. I never do it that way. I usually do it as a P S D, PDF or J. Peg. I typically used PSD, which means when I use the PST, it'll take it right in the photo shop. If I'm just going this in a telestrator to Macon a vector, I use J. Peg. It doesn't really make a difference because you're turning into a vector so you can use any type of file you want to, but so I will use the exports PSD so we'll take this. And also it'll take your layers. PSD will take your layers with you, which is really useful when you have a multi layered document or just a lot of projects on one file. So said PST. Now you have options you can save to Dropbox, which is mostly what I dio. You can save the image to computer or your iPad. Rather, if you have an apple, a Mac computer, you can drop it to your Mac devices will show up all here, So I can I drop it to my phone of our air drop into my phone if I wanted to. Or Mother I've had. You know, I don't have a Mac computer, so I can't airdrop it to my Mac. Unfortunately, so I usually save as Dropbox. You can copy it to your Google drive if you want Teoh. I can also take it to other programs this way, like take it too graphic if I want to, or anything like that. So there's a lot of options for exports in this APA's well, so that is good.
