1. Welcome | Course Overview: Hi. And welcome to this close where I'm going to show you how to make this key chain or hearing as we call them in the UK Hi. My name's Nancy on. I'm going to share you exactly how to choose Lever for your project. How to cut never how to apply design, how to paint and how to add the attachments for your key chain. So this class is going to be quite lively on quite informative on and it will be fun. So I look forward to seeing you in the first class.
2. Choosing Your Leather: welcome back. I just wanted to go through quickly a bit. About the different types of levers are available. So there are these types of leathers which have got nice designs on them on their quite soft, flexible on these air known as chrome tanned levers. Now these ones are not suitable for our caring projects, because when we stamp them, they won't hold the design. The design will just fade away quite shortly afterwards. So the types of leathers that we need are actually thes ones, which are vegetable tanned levers, also known as Reg, tanned for short. Now this one here, just push it up to the camera. You can see it's quite floppy on, um, so that's the front. And then that is the back. Now this is about one millimeter in thickness. On it's a little bit floppy. Andi. It will hold our key ring stamp in, but it's probably best if you can try to use a thicker vegetable. So veg time that I'm going to be working with to show you three examples of the different key rings is this one, which is a much more stiffer veg. Thanh. This is the front on of this is the back, and this is a two millimetre thickness. So when you go through your vegetable scraps, try and go for the thicker ones. Another thing to say is that you can also get key ring blanks as well. On duh, they come with the hardware sometimes. So you get the ring and then the rivet that goes inside there will. Sometimes you might just get them like this. And then you have to buy the rivets on the the key ring separately. But just for you to know that that that's also an option. Although in this class we are going to be just used in the veg tan on cutting it ourselves and creating our own designs so onto the next class.
3. Found Objects Overview: I would suggest Look around your house, Andi, See if you can find anything like what I found. For example, I found a bit of copper Tubin on. I made a design onto the lever. Using this, I just kind of moved the moved of Toobin along and made this kind of try circular design, which I think is quite nice. And, you know, you could just play around with it. You can move these, uh, and create your own design if you have some screwdrivers as well. Um, you can use Thies to create designs. I just kind of played around with this screwdriver to make type of pattern or white petals of a flower on here. And then I just dumped in the middle the middle of the flower, you know, just have a lot of fun with this, uh, trying to find things around your house on. Just use your imagination that your imagination fly and you can come up with a great design looking forward to see it
4. Cutting Leather Advice: Now, the next stage is for us to cut our leather. So I've got They're leather. We've got a really here on. And this rule up is great because it's metal. So if you can use a metal ruler, that would be best. And it's got a kind of slope here on a ridge that you can put your fingers in. So this will help you to, you know, really cut firmly against the lever. The other thing is, we need a cutting mat. So cutting Matt will help us to line up our leather when we want Teoh. Cut straight line on, then. Obviously, we need some type of knife. I'm used in a Stanley knife here, so, you know, try and get a blade. That is a shop as possible. Okay, so that us line our leather against the match. Also, another thing to mention is that you can decide how thick you want your key ring. Um, this one is about that. See, we cut it about three inches. Oh, 7.5 centimeters and then across maybe just under book, just over half a niche, then maybe about just under 15. Um, but just under 1.5 centimeters. Okay, No. Let us line up our leather against the top edge of one of these grid lines on to put a ruler in place to line up. We're just going to basically draw the knife down quite firmly. Now, you don't need to try in Kutch. The never all from the very first go. If you could just keep your hands steady onto the brother, keep drawing down. So you might need to do this about three or four times, and that's okay. The important thing is that we just want to get clean as cut as possible so they would go, Go. I will cut edge there, so I'm gonna move this up a bit. I'm just gonna eye ball it, really? So in leather, what you will be doing a lot off eyeball in. So I would suggest you get used to it because it will really, in the improve your your skills. So I've got my piece of leather that I cut earlier and going to use the mat to line things up. I think so. We're just lining up our leather here. We're going to get our standing knife on cool down that ever might move a little bit here. But don't worry too much. Just make sure that on this side it doesn't move. And I found used in the standing. Life is much better than the scissors because with a scissors you tend to get a bit of an angle looking good. Now, if you want, you can. This bit. When I cut this part off the leather, I just did use a scissors so you can have it straight like the top. Or you can put it at an angle. Or you could even put it into, like, a point if you wanted to. It's up to you. But yes, you decided your design. Really? I'm just showing you the techniques, and then you can go and stamp your own ideas. Today we have, uh, peace cut
5. Cutting Key Chain Shapes: So now we've got a piece of scrap leather. I'm just going to cut some pieces, some random shapes to start making some key rings. Now you can choose any shape you want. Really? Okay, So now I've cut out some shapes to make the Keeling's This one. I've just shaped the edges with a sharp scissors on. And the next stage now is to put a hole so that we can put our hearing attachments. So I'm just going Teoh, uh, use the bridge off the cutting that and use a cocktail stick on. Just make a mark where I'm going, Teoh, make that hope. Such a summer in the middle there and then the same for this squad just the middle on again . So going to use the virtually hole punch she make a hope. Onda um, it's best if you make the holes before put in the paint on because if you make them after, then some of the natural lever will show through, so it's best to do it beforehand. So the next step now is to moisten the lever and then to add some designs on
6. Moistening Leather: so hiss that ever scrap that was cut earlier on. When I moisten lever, I tend to use this spray bottle. I find it gives an even distribution or water onto the lever, and this water is nothing fancy. It's just regular tap water. It doesn't have to be hard, so it doesn't have to be cold. So this in this bottle is just going to be room temperature. If you don't have a spray bottle, then you congest. Use boil, bowl or water. Andi, apply that with a sponge. So when we ah, wets whatever, we want to apply it to the surface, not the back on, and we don't want to put too much water, just a few sprays, and what we want to do is you want to wait a little bit so that it's returns a bit more to looking like the original color. We don't want to put too much water because that won't give us a good impression when we go to stamp and we don't want to little water because that also won't give us a good impression. We want Teoh have a midway point. The only real way to judge this is to practice practice, put in water onto the river. And then when you stamp, um, you be able to judge with experience, how much to actually put onto the lever?
7. Found objects demonstration: so I've moistened my never Andi. Now I'm going to have a go at using a found object, which is a piece off copper tube in that I found. So just gonna place the copper Tubin on the lever scrap piece of lever and get the Hamma and see what kind of design we can create with this. So when I hit the hammer, I'm just gonna go kind of around in a circle just so I can get the four impression it's all just hit that a few times. There you go. There's a little circle and I think I will intersect it like this. So hit was just kind of playing around. And then you can do you know, basically whatever design you want to do, just play around with it on, then just have fun. So that's the copper Tubin
8. Painting the key chain: earlier, I showed you how I use my copper tube in to make a pattern. Andi, I've made a pattern on this key ring now and now, about to apply the paint on. Possibly die. No. Show you that coming up right now. So I'm going to put some orange dye onto this Caring better late than never. - So I believe that too dry.
9. Adding Keychain attachments: Okay, Now let's talk about some of the attachments that we can use to put onto our key rings. Um, you get these ones with chains, but then have what's called like a jump a ring, which has a split that you can open up on. Attach that to your key ring. You can also get some without the chains like these. These are called 25 millimeter split key rings. An easy option is to use some bull chain with a tubular clasp. So you just secure the board game by sticking it in there and pushing down on another thing to say that when we attach a key ring onto our onto our leather such as this and without a chain, it could be useful. Teoh. Another little jump Oring. Just so it could be a nice and flat if if that's important to you. Otherwise you could just push this onto the lever through the hole on. That would be that. So I'm just going to take time now, Teoh, attach all of the's, although these levers have been prepared aunt to complete the key rings. So here we're just going to find the jump ring on and it's easier if you have some pliers as thes jump wings can be quite strong on. There's a little split. Just I think I couldn't see that moved and just open up the ring. Push through. Then we're going to close it again. Open up, Jump ring, I say. Good for this spawn. Touch it. The look applies to come in very useful.
