1. Welcome to Leadership 101!: Hi, everyone. My name is Casey Ellis and thank you for joining my skill share class leadership. 101 easy steps to becoming a great leader, a little bit about my background. My education is an organizational leadership as well as management and customer service. I absolutely love these topics. I totally geek out on books and resource is about them. So it's It's definitely my passion and something that I love to do. So thank you again for joining the class and let's go ahead and get started. 2. The Problems & The Solutions: All right, everybody, welcome back to leadership. Wanna one easy steps to becoming a great leader. So this is that he has been to help you become a better and more effective leader by adopting the very simple and easy behaviors. This will help you to move forward in your company. It can help you to become a better leader for your team and to find and teach other leaders how to create a more effective team as well. So the way that I can help you to do this is to educate you on just the very basics of what leadership is the traits of great leaders and how to easily incorporate them into your life . Do you mind saying All right? Cool, Casey. Well, what's the point? Right? And here's the thing. Leadership is a highly sought after in a very highly valued commodity. People are seeking more information on how to become a leader or more effective leader, and they understand how it can improve many aspects alive, personally, socially, professionally and smart corporation thirst seeking leaders because of their talents and their ability to improve bottom line. So overall, if you have it, they want it And this could be like higher ups, different companies or even just the people that you're, um, you know, advertising yourself to like in network marketing are in drug sales. So overall people want leaders, and that means that people want you. So you might say, OK, so what's the problem? And here is the issue with that Is that education on leadership? If pretty poor, not many higher education courses are taught on it. I had to get my degree online. It wasn't even taught in person, and many companies don't really teach it. And if they do teach it, they usually don't ever follow up with it. It just kind of throw someone into, like, a leadership training class. And then they think they're gonna come back being leaders and their mouth when they don't so it doesn't work out. And also, leadership is depicted in so many popular books and movies or online things is being easy and simple, or it's just meant for just a couple types of people. And it is it. So now the big issue that I see with many people I work with is that they want to be in a leadership role. They know what's best for their company. They know what the team members need to probably part of the team, and they know what they want and they're ready for that kind of a position. But so often they see other people who aren't as qualified or their nodded as engaged in their work. And these were the people getting the higher position. So some of you may already you might already be a leader in whatever position her, and and you're working with team members or employees that maybe they're not engaged in their work. They don't show up very often. They do their jobs poorly. Your overall the honesty they just don't care. So you also may want to find a way to get your team to align better with your priorities and the no end up doing their job better. So overall, people want to do better and they want to be better. And by adopting leadership skills, they're absolutely on their way to do that. And so are you 3. The Definition of Leadership: everybody. So let's go ahead and start what we're actually going to cover today. So part what? We're going to actually define what leadership is. We're actually gonna put our finger on. What leadership is Part two. We're going to go over the types of leaders hand. We're also going to go over types of power, which is something that's not talked about very often. But it is really important. Part three. Lastly, we're going to cover the real needs of our lesson, which is how to be a leader and then how to find leaders. So let's go. 4. What is Leadership: all right, so we're going to define what is leadership. This is really what the classes about. So when I ask people to define leadership, there's almost a many definitions of leadership is there are people that I've asked to define it. So if I would ask you to define glove, joy or peace, those words have different meanings to different people, and leadership is very similar. It has very different meanings to many different people. So leadership has also been conceptualized over the years and different classifications systems to try to define it. People are really trying to get to the black and white of what it is. But despite the multiple ways that leadership has been conceptualized, the following components are shared all across the board number. What leadership is a process that means it's not a trait is not a characteristic, or it's more of, ah, transactional e bit between the leader and between the follower. So while one person may have a lot of traits of a leader, that doesn't mean they are leader. Because if they process not a trader characteristic, that means the processes interactive. It's not linear. Number two leadership involves influence. It's a necessity to leadership. It's how the leader affects the follower and without influence, leadership does not exist. Number three leadership occurs in groups on that leadership involves influencing a group of individuals who have a common purpose small or small groups, large groups, all of us. There must be a group in order for leadership to happen. This means that leadership training programs that teach people to leave themselves they're not considered a part of leadership. Within this type of definition, Number four leadership involves common goals. The attention is directed to individuals who are trying to achieve something together. We have a common goal by the goal being common and being mutual. This lessens the possibility that leaders are going to try to take advantage or active ethical for some reason. So the definition of leadership is leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. So really, leadership is a complex process with multiple dimensions 5. Types of Leaders: welcome back. So now we're going to discuss types of leaders. So some reach searchers cede leadership as a trait like she was born to be a leader that includes also trait like height, personality, intelligence. Things like that. Both people think that leadership is a is a trait or characteristic. Second is people believe that it's a behavior or process. This is how one interacts with their followers, and this is what I will be explaining in this class. So the behavior process. Some people are assigned our appointed leaders because of their position and organization. So like plant managers, director administrators, heads of departments, those air assigned or pointed leaders, whereas others are emergent leaders. And this is because the way that people respond to them so typically the most influential members of a group, regardless of their title that person that's influentials, exhibiting emergent leadership. So these two types of leaders It could be good or bad, though good about this objective, of course, but just because someone's a plant manager doesn't necessarily mean a good leader. But there are some plant managers on a great leaders, so just because someone emerges as a leader doesn't mean they're doing what's best for everyone or their ethical, these air, just types of leaders. But it does not, Um, it doesn't mere if they're doing what they're doing is right or the wrong. They're literally just types in, that's all. 6. Leadership & Power: Okay, so now we're going to move into leadership in power. So the concept of power is very important because it's part of the influence process. Power is the capability or the potential to influence people's beliefs, their attitudes and their courses of action. Still, ministers, doctors, coaches, teachers These are all examples of people that have the potential to influence us. And when they do that, they're using their power. Now some people see power as the tool and that could be wielded, you know, by leaders to achieve their own ends. Another see that it occurs in relationships and should be used by both leaders and followers to promote their collective goal, power and manipulation and influence. They're not bad words and then not that action. They are tools and they can and they should be used for the entire goal of the group. Everybody wants to be led. Now, I I say this. Let me take a second on this line to explain this people they're looking to be let and this isn't a personality, weakness or a flaw, which a lot of people think it is just humid. So now we act so think of this big of it isn't like you're in a very dark tunnel. Can't see anything, can't get anywhere. How many people would you want in their toe? Have flashlights to help you leave the way out, like is many is possible, right? Like as many as you can so anyone can lead. And most people do it every day in a certain way. So another example, like you're going to a new restaurant. The waiter comes and see to and explains all the different, You know, popular menu options and explains no to you and says, And if you get something you don't like, I will go back And I will make sure that I make something that you're just gonna love. You're immediately going to sit back and be like who? Like I'm here. Somebody's taking care of me. I can sit back. I can relax. Someone else is taking over. You are being led and you liked it. So everybody wants to be lead in some way or another, and that is a good thing. And that's okay. I think we get so stuck in society as this of leader versus smaller like I'm not gonna be a follower I'm gonna be a leader and I'm gonna teach my kids be leaders and work leaders. But the thing is, is it's not bad to be a follower. There is no one that has done something amazing in this world that didn't have followers. It's just not there and to have proactive and engaged followers. That is how action starts. That is, how things make change in momentum happens. So everybody wants to be. Now I can go off and later, of course, the scholars forever and I probably do another video on it. But the whole goal of this is that everybody wants to be led and everybody has the capabilities to be a leader, and that's very important for you to know. 7. How to Be a Leader: Okay, everybody, welcome back. So now we're going to discuss how to be a leader. This is really the meat great of what this video is about. So remember everyone wants to be led and anyone can be a leader. Leadership. It's on a trait on the characteristic. It is a process. Now A leader has trades and has characteristics, but there's no one way that a leader is. And there's there's not one trait that makes anybody a leader. So on the class project, I asked you to think of someone that you saw the leader and you may have had several people come up. And if you look at those people, they're probably very different, even though they may share some traits, so probably very different, maybe even while the difference. So what? We discussed that there are types of leaders. Anyone can be categorized into those types and still be very different. Remember, anyone can be a leader, So we're gonna go over the top eight steps or traits or actions that are very easy to do, understand. There simply put, anything anybody can do to be a great leader. Number one is do what you say you will do this. Pretty simple, right? Um, a lot of people say under promise and over deliver. You have rules and you have boundaries and you're going to be firm with them. You control the system, you follow through with it. And if you can't back something up, do something else to make up for it or, you know, edge and at least always educate your team. Mr Why you're doing that if something didn't happen, but always doing tournament, say you're gonna dio Number two is being the example. This is how you act, how you dress, how you treat your team. Overall height come up. It needs to be in direct correlation to your group's goals and objectives. Yours in them. Number three is the commitment to improve. This is just showing your commitments of being better and doing better. It's huge and helps your team to also be responsible for themselves. Committing to more education is also important because you want to be the leader. Number four is promoting engagements is so important being proactive in the process of communication. So asking for feedback instead of waiting for feedback if you wait for feedback was likely you're never gonna get it right now. You don't always want to be like looking over everybody's shoulder and being in their business all the time. But you want to take the incentive and get and ask me the information that you want to get . Number five is being confident. I gotta tell you, sometimes you gotta think it so you make it right. But, you know, this is a huge part of leading now. Having confidence doesn't mean you always know what you're gonna get you what you're doing . And few people ask questions when you're confident they're more likely to follow you. Um, but it really is about having responsibility and trust and respect. You're not gonna come off arrogant or a jerk. This isn't lying or being deceitful. If you don't know something, you can still be confident and not knowing something. This is a very important A lack of knowledge has nothing to do with your confidence or your ability to leave. Number six is being decisive. This is was making decisions, both taking the information you get from your team from your education from your past from your resources. Make that into a distance into a decision and always take responsibility for the consequences to There's no good decision that doesn't have consequences. Number seven is caring for your team. This is on a personal and a professional level. Ask them about their kid's soccer game or car. Followed them over the customer matter. Make sure they always have everything they need to do their job. Because this engagement is care. Remember their your workhorse, and they have to be taking care of in order for them to perform. Well, um, if you don't have a people, you don't have people you know have a team. Now this doesn't mean either that you're like going to do everything they say, Do everything to ask. You know, there's always gonna be disagreements, but it's important to listen, to empathize and to explain why you're doing what you're doing. But always always care for your team, but let them know you care. That's huge, too. Number eight is being a problem solver, and that's what you dio you. You see things more than you do things you know. You always see what needs to be done. Your vision. The overall Kal and the team does the doing for you Because, remember, it's not about you. And for long lasting results. You need people that are engaged about share your vision, not drones, cause they're gonna die out when you die out. You are kind of the spark that ignites the entire firework show, and everybody remembers the show. They don't necessarily ever even think about the spark. And that is huge because it is not about you. It's about your teeth, the whole fireworks show. 8. How to Find Leaders: All right, everybody. So now we're going to discuss how to find leaders. Now, remember, earlier, whenever I said anyone can be a leader, right? Still true. Uh um, Now think of that characters in movies. Protagonist in one movie could be wildly different than the protagonist in another. And but they both can still be really great leaders, right? So anybody can do it and everyone wants to be lead. You have to remember that, um, live. We're gonna refer back to how to be a leader in the traits that we just talked about. Those eight steps Look for people who are engaged with their customers or their gauge with other team members. Once you care about what what's gonna happen in the group or with the product or with their estimates, Look for people that showed confidence when they're addressing others. But they're still very humble and especially in their knowledge, not not know it alls, we all know have on this people all right, who is committed to getting better or learning more about their subject, who is following through with their customers or checks in with their team to see how they are. Even without being asked to do it. These are all traits of a leader that we just best in looking for those traits in other people is how you find leaders. 9. Action Steps: Okay, so now we're gonna go through action steps. This is what you do, the black and white of what you need to do to get this going. And this is stuff you cannot fully start today. It's number one is. You're going to define the common goal. What do you need to happen? And what is your Why? To find that goal. Number two is the actually steps you need to take to get there. Remember, you probably have heard this before, but people say, How do you eat an elephant? You know you have these huge goals. How do you get to them? How do you eat an old elephant? Well, the answer is you do it one bite at a time, so defining what your action stuffs are to get there is huge. But for me, I love to plan. I'm a total planner and I love having these Biggles. I love having big, hairy, scary goals and then little girls. But really, you need to have the action steps in order once you need to do day by day bye Week, month, my but month by month, in order to get to those big goals so well, having these huge wills is great. That's wonderful to be able to want to learn them and define them. You still need Teoh have the little baby steps in order to get there, and that was really, really help with your progress. And whenever you're listening to something like this, it's not necessarily like, Okay, I need have 10 sales by tomorrow or something. That's new miracle when you're dealing but behaviors, it's a little different the action steps that you have to take. So be open and be easy on yourself. I know it's really hard to kind of overshoot what your goals need to be. Number three. You need to educate your team members. This is telling them what the goals are, what you're expecting of them. If you did part number two. Creating this action steps. This is actually giving that to your team and saying, All right, you know, this quarter, I want everyone to be at a star level, and then I want you to be to an executive level by this time sharing that with them, because if your goal now, even though we're talking leadership in his team, But if your goal is. No. I want to get to this. Frank. I want to get to this bonus. You're gonna have to educate your team members on what they need to do in order to get better themselves, even though that's also going to help you out as well. Number four is follow up. Follow through. This is absolutely hands down exactly what ah lot of people do not do. And I'm gonna tell you right now, like it is This is huge that you probably have heard before. People say the fortunes in the follow up and not it's absolutely right. You have to follow weapon follow through. How do you do that? The way you do with yourself is when that week comes and you have those baby steps that you defined in step two, you're gonna say, OK, am I here? Did we get this? Did we get that? That is how you follow up. And if you haven't, you gotta figure out why you got to create more action stuff to get during their always follow weapon. Follow through not only with your team, but also with yourself. And do know ever forget you have the ability to be a great leader now. It doesn't happen overnight and remember, it doesn't have to be something you're born with. None of that stuff matters. Leadership is a process, and in order to be a great leader, it just takes work just like anything else. And if you try to adopt those eight steps we talked about and then the action steps of getting that going every day, it's only to happen for you. 10. Final Thought: everybody. Thank you so much for watching the skill share video. Police. Follow me. Keep in touch. I'm going to be doing many more classes on customer service and leadership. I hope you enjoyed it. Thank you. And have a great day.
