1. A lil’ “me” and “what we’ll do here” intro: Hi, everybody. My name is Doodle Mara. I'm an industrial designer and self taught letter and calligrapher. And this is intro to modern calligraphy course for beginning creatives. If you're not a beginner and you're looking to reinforce your basics, this is definitely the place to be. So in this class we're gonna learn how to do modern calligraphy. We're gonna learn a little about what calligraphy means. We're gonna go through some drills to learn all the basic strokes, and we're gonna practice a lower case in uppercase alphabet so that you can finish the course with a completely original composition all made by you in you only also, I'd love to see how everyone is doing through the course, so you don't have to upload everything at once. You can upload your practice sheets so that I can give you some feedback, and so the others can also see what you're doing and get inspired. So be sure to upload your practice sheets in the Project section leader. You can update it by uploading your project. So, as I said in the description, hopefully you will finish this class with an irresistible urge to write on all the surfaces that you can get your hands on and hold on. I need to tell you something very important. Don't worry. If you think you don't have nice handwriting, you do not have to have pretty handwriting to become a great calligrapher. All you need is some can do attitude, the right tools and a whole lot of practice, So let's get started.
2. What is calligraphy?: you've probably heard of the term calligraphy or ham lettering before. And if you're anything like me when I was starting out, you probably think those two terms mean the same thing. Well, they got the term hand lettering refers to the art of drawing words. This is great for logo designs or decorative signs, mostly word to shorter sentences. Since they take a little longer. However, the term calligraphy is the art of writing words, and you achieve the thick, thin effect by applying pressure in different strokes. So there are two types of calligraphy, traditional like copper plate around hand. And then there's modern calligraphy, which is the one we're gonna be learning here. So usually people don't get in the technical lingo in the beginning, but I think it's very, very important to understand it, and I think it makes you way better when you faster you'll see what I'm talking about. In this next video
3. Technical lingo: Okay, So when you're talking about Font, you're gonna be using four factors. The baseline Theus ender, the D sender and the X height. The baseline is where your letters you're going to stand on its like the floor of your letters. They're gonna stand on the base. The X height, also called the mean line, is the height of all your lower case letters. The Ascender is the part of the letter that goes above the X height. For example, all uppercase letters and letters like lower case T F H and L and B are gonna be touching this sign. The descend er is the part of the letter that drops below the baseline. Those are gonna be all of your cues wise peas, G's and jays, and sometimes ease all of this can, of course, vary once you start developing your own style. But this is what it is from a starting point
4. What you’ll need: Okay, so now I'm gonna show you what we're gonna be using for this class. We're gonna be using plain Kriel less super took markers, and I know what you're gonna say. Hey, I've been using those since middle school for coloring. Well, surprise there. Also an amazingly easy to get in super cheap choice for people were just starting calligraphy. Plus, there's a ba jillion colors you can choose from, and there's no downside of that. And you can also use the Crayola prop tip markers. But I find they make too big a bill line for where we're gonna be doing here today. Nevertheless, they are a good alternative now for the paper. We're gonna be writing on a plain white printer paper so that super easy also, if you want to download the guide that I've attached to the project description so that you can write on those and you could have an easier start, that would be great. I know. I sure love the guides. Cool. Now it's finally time to get our hands story
5. The basic-est drills: these next few videos do not have any background music on them. This is because a lot of people get distracted with the background music. So you're very welcome to put on any music that you like, If you prefer to work with music on. Okay. So, first of all, you want to make sure that you're in a good posture to start. You want your feet against the floor, you're back to be straight in a whole lot of space so that your elbows are inside of your writing space and not floating outside of the table. Okay, so now that's covered. Let's start with how you handle your pen and paper, right? Unit people. You're gonna want to slam your paper counterclockwise and about 45 degrees like that. So you have a better angle, okay. And left handed people, you're gonna slant your paper clockwise so that you can write like this. I'm right handed, So if you're a lefty, you're gonna have to mirror what you're seeing here. You're gonna hold your pen at an angle. You're not gonna want to hold it straight up. You want to hold it like this at an angle and We're going to start with some basic drills so we can warm up and get a sense of the thickness of the lines and how they relate to the pressure that we're applying. So I would recommend doing a minimum of three lines for drill. OK, this is so that you can work on your muscle memory. Let's remember that all the shapes that we're learning here are the main components for all the letters we're gonna be doing in the next videos. Okay, First of all up strokes, we're gonna apply a very light amount of pressure on our up strokes. Don't worry. If you're going slow, it's important to take your time to develop your muscle memory. So what I'm doing here is I am following these guidelines, okay? They're slightly slanted, so you just want to follow that. Okay, now we move on to down strokes. We're going to start applying pressure on our marker so that the tip flexes against the paper. Okay. See how the lines are thicker when we put pressure on it. And since Crayola markers aren't really used for well, they're not specially made for calligraphy. You're gonna start seeing how your tip bends a little. Do you see that? Okay, Like that. And start spending a little, but that's OK. That's normal. What I do is I just rotated a little bit so that it doesn't bother me. The most basic thing that you have to remember is whenever you're doing a stroke upwards like this, it's thin. And when you're doing a stroke downwards, it's thick. So up thin, down thick. Okay, so moving on to thin, thick transition curse. We're going to start with a thick line going downwards from the X height. Okay. And we're gonna come up to the X height again with a thin line. Okay, We're gonna try to stay inside the baseline and the X height and make sure we're touching the baseline and the X height when we're going back up, then separate your marker and start again. So let's do this kind of following the slant that I've suggested here. Okay? So once again, I recommend doing about three lines minimum, you know, so you can get kind of like a lot better. See how I just separated my marker here. I mean, it doesn't really matter. I could just go back in and fill it in. Okay, so now we continue to thin, thick transition curves. But now we're going to start from the bottom, and we're gonna go up to the X height and down towards the bass line again. We do this. Go up, then down thick up, then down. Thick up, thin, down thick. Now we're gonna make some ovals. We're going to start a little below the X height line. So this is my ex height line. We're gonna go up a thin stroke, a teeny weeny bit, and then we go down thick, and then we go up thin again. OK, so this is one of the most basic shapes that we're gonna be using because we're gonna be using it for a czar. Bees. Okay, the structure is also for the age. Okay, It's now see home not starting from here to here. I'm starting, like from a little like from that dot right there. Okay, so I'm gonna go ups in down thick up thin ups in down, thick of thin. When you've got your ovals down, we're gonna start with some loops. So we're going to start on the X height right here. and then we're gonna go up with a curve towards the Ascender, and then we're gonna come down and finish with a little group at the end. Okay? I'm gonna do that again. So we go up light down thick and then up again and, uh, down, thick up again. Okay, so once you've got that looped down, we're gonna move on to the upside down loops. So we're starting at the X height, and then we're gonna come down heavy towards the dissenter line, and then we're gonna come up to the east to the baseline. Okay, so we're gonna go down heavy up to the baseline. Jonas sent a descend er and then up to the baseline. I don't know if you've noticed, but I've been rotating my marker around because the tip starts to get a little slanted like this. So sometimes that makes your up strokes. Not B s, then. As you wish. So one of your when you rotate, it helps with a thinner upstroke. Okay. Okay. So remember to take some quick snaps of the practice. You do you have so far and post them on your projects. Page. You can go do that now. Go, go, go! And when you're done posting and you feel you've had enough practice feel for you to continue to the next video.
6. The Undercases: a c d e g o q: we're gonna divide the alphabet into four parts. This is a cool little trick that I learned from Doris. Full grab owes intro do copper plate class, and it's super effective. And it's way easier to get a hang of the letters when you're practicing more or less the same stroke. So I've grouped together the letters with similar steps for these next videos With individual letters, I'd recommend at least one line of each other at least. So okay, we're gonna start with the water A and we're going to start doing an oval. Remember how we start the oval just a little below the X height line, and then we go up and then we come down thick, and then we go up again, and then we're gonna do another stroke, a thick down stroke, and then we're gonna come up. So we go up, down, thick up so we can make an oval. And then we make just a line down thick mine. Feel free to do as many of these as you want when you've got your A's all down. Oh, I didn't like this 1st 1 Um, now we're gonna go on to letter C we're gonna do, like, 1/2 oval kind of thing. We're gonna go up and then down and then stay here. Okay? Up, down and up again up to the X height down to the baseline and then up again, X height down to baseline in the thick line and then go up again. I'm leaving all thes little end lines like this very high is gonna be very useful once we're connecting letters, so matters will get the hang of it. Now we're gonna move on to our D. I'm gonna start doing an oval, so we go up to the Excite down to the baseline, Then I'm going to stop right here. I'm gonna let go a little bit. I'm gonna come up in a thin stroke, and then I'm gonna come down. I'm gonna do a loop. Remember the loops that we practiced? Okay, so this one's a little off. I'm gonna try to better that. So I'm gonna go up, down. Look, now I'm gonna let go a little up and down, up, down, thing up thick. I mean, tellme thick up then and then we're gonna go up again and down on thick these air looking better. But, you know, it's always like this. Your first tries are always a little off, and then you kind of get the hang of it. Moving on. Now we're going to do that, E. Okay, so you're going to start from the middle off the X height and the baseline. So you're gonna go right in the middle, and then you're going to go up in a thin curb and down on a thick stroke and then up again . So from the middle of the excite in the baseline, you go up and down thick up again. Then don't worry. Ever going slow? This is good. Now we're gonna do the G, which is gonna be an oval again. I'm gonna go. I'm gonna come up here to do it. So I'm gonna dio the over and then I'm gonna let go. I'm gonna put my marker on the X height line and then I'm going to go down to the baseline and I'm going to go up to the middle of the X and baseline. Okay? So I'm gonna do this again over down thick. Then I'm gonna let I'm gonna lift up my pen. I'm gonna come up to the X height down to the baseline and unto Oh, okay. So here, from a little underneath the x height, we're going to go thick down, up, two. We tent until we touch the X height, and then we go down sick and Upton again. OK, so we're gonna go a little lower than the Excite, and we're gonna start there. We're gonna go down to the base line up to the X height down thick. We're gonna finish in a little thin stroke. Okay, So, again, down, up, down thick and up to the x height. So the Q is an oval again We're gonna do the oval We're gonna come down and up See how we ever oval We're gonna make a line from the X height to the D sender. And then we're gonna come up a little curve like this and, uh, thin line up, over, down. Now we're gonna lift our marker. We're gonna make a line down thick and okay, So remember to practice all of your lines and all of your letters. And if you're done practicing thes, you can move on to the next video
7. The Undercases: b h k m n p s: Okay, so now we're gonna do our second set of under cases, and we're going to start with the letter B and we're going to start from the Ascender line down to the baseline. We're going to go up in a little curve and down thick, and I've been a little curve again almost to the x height. Okay, So do you notice that I'm following this land that's marked on the pages? That so our letters are a little a little slanted and that I think that makes them look ah , lot better. But of course, we'll be developing that when you go on as you start taking more experience and you'll start to develop your own style. So, I mean, for the sake of this exercise, you should follow the slant, and then later you will work your own style into it. So we're gonna do another be here. We're going down to the baseline and then up X height down thick up thin, down to the baseline, up to the X height down thick of thin. Our next letter is the letter age, and we're going to start from the baseline, and we're gonna go up from the baseline to the Ascender line like this in a loop, and then we're gonna come down thick, and then we're gonna do a little curve up and down. So from baseline to a sender in a thin line and then down in a thick stroke to the baseline again and then up to the ex high and down to the baseline again and a curve towards the X height. We're gonna continue with our case, and it's gonna be a very similar stroke to our ages. It's gonna be down from the baseline, just like our age up to the Ascender line down towards the baseline and then up towards the X height. And then we're gonna come down thick like this to the middle of the ex high and the baseline, and we're going to come down, think again and up. Okay, so I like to think of this as a little miniature are like this in the upper case, are from baselines that centerline down thick and up and down thick and down. Think again and up thin. Okay, So if you feel I'm going too fast, feel free to pause the video at any time, so that you can practice on your own, but we're gonna continue with. Our letters are next. One is the water and and we're going to start with a down stroke down thick stroke. Then we're gonna go up, then down, thick up, then I don't think and up. Remember, I'm doing these end strokes because that's gonna help connect our letters once we start doing words down, thick up, thin down thick Upton down thick and up again. I love the letter M. Maybe it's because my name starts with an end. I think it's a very pretty and symmetrical letter. I love to draw it. And now we're moving on to the letter end and we're going to start from the X height to the baseline. So basically, it's the same letter with one less curve. So we're gonna start, we do down thick and then up. Then down thick Upton and again, down thick up, thin down and occur and up thin. Do another one down, thick up thin two X height line and then down to the base line up to the X height again. Now we're moving on to our next letter. We're going to start from the X height down to the descend. Er, I'm gonna follow the slant that I have marked on the paper. I'm gonna come up to the ex high down to the baseline. I'm going to do a little loop here from X height to descend. Er, I'm gonna follow up with that. Same in this same stroke, I'm gonna go up down, up again. Okay, So from x height to descend her line and then from baseline, you go up and down and a curve and up again to the X height. Our next letter is the letter s, and I'm gonna give you two ways to do it, because they're both very popular and they're both very pretty. And so we're gonna go from the baseline to the X height in a thin line, and then we're going to come down from the X height baseline, and we're gonna do a little loop right here, and then we're gonna come up again. So this is the first way to do it. I'm going to do it again from the biggest line up to the X height in a little curve, and then we're gonna get down in a thick line and then up again Thin, toothy X height, uh, down Kurt and come up again to the X height. And the other way to write it is just the regular s that we use in our day to day handwriting. So it's gonna be just like a normal s like this, but now, with thick stroke and thin, Okay, and we're gonna come up like this. So we're doing like, when we start a noble we're gonna start right there just a little below the x height line. We're gonna go up thin down thick town thick, and we're gonna come up. This is what happens sometimes when the transitions aren't so smooth. Do you see how this transition doesn't look so smooth? So what I like to do sometimes it's just fill it in and it'll look better. This is our second group of letters
8. The Undercases: i j t u v w y: So this is our third group of letters, and we're going to start with the letter. I think this is very straightforward. It's just gonna be ah, line from the X height thick down and then up again towards the X height. Okay, this is our I. Easy. Right? So we're gonna go down thick and Upton, and then we're gonna put a little dot over it down thick ups, then r dot Once you feel comfortable with this, you can move on to the next letter case or J. We're gonna start from the baseline right here. We're gonna go up towards sex height and then down and then up again towards the X height, but the dot on the top. So if you don't want to do this little line right here, it's gonna look like this. We're just gonna do a line down and then up towards the X height. Okay, this is R. J. Now we're gonna do the tea, which is also very straightforward. Very easy. I'm gonna go from the Ascender line to the dissenter line and up again, and the cross stroke, which is gonna be a little thin stroke and thes people sometimes get really creative with ease and they start doing it a little more decoratively. And you can short do that once you start getting more experience, you know, just do like a little floor ish like this or something like that down thick, send it occurred. And then the cross stroke or next letter is the you We're gonna start from the mid point, which is the X height are gonna go down and then up thin and then down thick Upton. So this is like an upside down. And and it's also one of the exercises that we did at the beginning in the drills, so they should be fairly familiar. So up and from the X height down and up towards the X height again. So down from the X height to the baseline and up to the Exide again and then down from X height, baseline up towards the excite again. Our next letter is the V a little below the X height, and I'm gonna go up, work her like this. I'm gonna go down and then up in a thin stroke. I'm going to do a little loop thing so I can come up to the X height again. Okay, so I'm gonna do this again, or curve, I'm gonna go towards the bottom to the baseline. I'm gonna come up in a thin line, a little loop against towards the X height, Do the curve again up and then down and then up. And then we do that loop right here and up to the X height. Again, Care next letter is gonna be the W, which is also fairly familiar because we've done this in the dross. Do you remember this shape? We go down and then up in a little curve. Do you remember this shape? So we're gonna do it again. Tadaa that turned W I'm gonna finish with a little lube right here. So sometimes people started with, like, this little loop, So I'm gonna go up, down and up again and little loop. Whoops. Sorry. I must operate here. So we're gonna go up, down, uh, then down, thick up, thin and down thick in the loop. So here. I don't like how this turned out, so I'm just gonna fill it in a little, so that looks fairly good. We're going to continue to our why this is just another familiar shape. This the same thing that we did for the W We're gonna go down thick and up then like this. And they were doing gonna do a line from the X height to the dissenter line and then come up and a loop like the upside down loops that we did in the drills and again Down, up, down, lip. Perfect. So we finished our third group of letters. Once you're comfortable, you can continue on to the next video.
9. The Undercases: f l r x z : continuing on to our last group of under case letters. We're gonna start with the letter F. And for this we're going to start on the baseline right here, and we're gonna go up towards the X height line and then down to the dissenter line up again to the baseline and up to the exciting down from the baseline, up to the X height and then in a loop, we're gonna come down following the slant, and then we're gonna come up again from the dissenter line to the baseline and up to the X height. Our next letter is gonna be the l. And that's gonna be like the drill that we made for the loop for the first loop that we made. So we're going to start on the baseline, and then we're gonna go up towards Theus end there, come down on a loop and finish up with a little ascender line. And again. So from the baseline, all the way up to the Ascender line. Then we come down a loop and we go up to the X height again. Remember to upload all of your practice sheets just a soon as whatever you get tired or whatever. You want to take a break or whatever. Just take a quick sap and posted on the project section, and then you can update it later with your final project. So let's go on to our next letter, which is the are. And so for that, we're gonna come down to the baseline, we're gonna go up towards the X height, and then we're gonna put more pressure down. So we're gonna make a little curve like this, and then we're gonna come down to the baseline again and then up. Okay, so this is one way to do it the other way to do it. And I think what kind of depends on what you want to use it on and how playful you want it to be because I think this is a more serious are. So the other way to do in our is from the baseline up. And then we go down on a loop like this on a thick loop, and then we go down again and up to the X height. So we're gonna come up from the baseline to the middle X height that we're gonna go down on loop to a little lower than the X height. And then we're gonna go down and up again. So again, down Oh, loop up, down to the baseline and up towards the X height. Next, we're gonna do the X. So we're going to start a little below the X height, and we're gonna go up and then down thick and then up again like this. So we're making too little curves like that. We're going to come from a little lower than the X height on the other side. We're gonna come down like this Up, down, thick, up thin. I don't think upset. So I did two different kinds and this one I did on up and then down and a thicker stroke and then up again. And then and then this one. I did it thin all the way through. I think it's kind of more aesthetic this one than this one because it looks a little thicker. It's kind of a little broader, so I don't know what kind of depends on what you want to dio. I kind of like this one better, so I'm just gonna do it like this. It's the exception to the rule. I'm not gonna do the thick down. I'm just gonna do, like, one thin line even though I'm doing it down. So I'm gonna do it again. This 1st 1 Okay, this is number one. I'm doing number one again. Hey, So up and a curve and then down Thick up thin. And this is the exception. Up then. Down. Thin up. Thin up, down, thick up. Sin up thin sound thin. Upton moving on to our last letter. I'm going to do it here because it has a D center line and this last line doesn't have a dissenter line. I'm gonna do it up here. Okay? So we're going to start on the middle, like in the middle between the baseline and the X height. I'm gonna do this little curve like this and then thick down, then up thin again from the baseline to the center line, down towards the dissenter line and then up towards the base height, I mean the baseline and then up towards the X height. OK, so that's our easy. It's not as pretty as I would have liked. So we're gonna do it again. Down to baseline, down to sender. up to baseline and up to X height, Aereo. So this is the end of the under case alphabet. And we're gonna continue on to our upper case to remember to upload your practice sheets to the project section and I'll see you in the next video.
10. The Uppercases: B D P R Z: we're now starting the upper case alphabet, and we're going to start with the letter B. We're gonna start at Theis, underline and then down towards the baseline, up to the Ascender X height and then down on a curve on a thick curve should have been thicker and then up again and occur for going to go down all the way to the baseline. Then, from this middle heart right here between the X and the Ascender, I'm gonna start up and then down to the X height and then down again to the baseline. Next, we're gonna do the letter D. I love capital letters because they look a little flourished, always. So you don't have to really make a lot of an effort for them to look very pretty and decorated. So we're gonna start with D, and we're gonna start from the center to the baseline like this. Okay. Without lifting your marker, your you're gonna come up towards Theus ender again and then down towards the baseline and then up again, then. Okay, so this is just one stroke. So down and up down. Here we go. We're gonna continue with a P, and I'm just gonna dio a down stroke like this. This is pretty simple that I'm just gonna do a little curve like this with ending loop. Okay, so we're gonna do from the Ascender line to the D centerline. We're just gonna do one thick stroke like this, and then we're gonna go up in a thin line, then down towards the middle and then up again, case I notice I'm starting this little curve from the P between in this from this line right here. So it's kind of between the the sender and the X height line. So I'm gonna do it again. Thick wind down and then up. Think down. Okay. Now, for our our it's kind of the same thing. So we're gonna go from the Ascender to descend er line and then up like we would a P c. We're finishing up like a p almost. But then from here, we're gonna do a little loop and then come down. You can also do it without the loop. I'll show you in this next one. So I'm gonna go down and then up and down and again like this. Ok, so whichever one you prefer, I think I kind of like this one better. So I'm gonna get down up town. Okay, we're continuing. So we're gonna do some seize up here. You see how we're doing. All our are starting strokes from the middle of the Ascender and the and the X height. So we're starting this here in the middle. This here in the middle of these two lines. This stroke great here in the middle of these two lines. So we're gonna do the same thing with RZ. We're going to start here in the middle, we're gonna go up down on a curve and I think stroke and then up down in thick stroke and then up again up town, um down and then move at the end. So this finishes our first group of upper case letters.
11. The Uppercases: C E G O Q: we're gonna start with a C. So we're going to start up here in the Ascender line down, and then we're gonna come slightly up like this. We're going to come down and up again. Okay, So this is a C Capital C and the Ascender come down towards the middle of the Ascender in the X height, and then we're gonna go up in a loop, come down in a loop in a thick line, and then come up again down and thick line and then up and then down again, and then up. I think I like my 1st 1 Now we're gonna do our upper case, E, and it's gonna start kind of the same, like we started this. So we're going to start, like, down towards the middle of these two lines, and then we're gonna go up to the Ascender and then down to the ex high and then down again and towards the X height again, down up to the a center line, down to the X height, little curve up down to the baseline, and then a little curve up to the X height. Now, for the G going to do this same little loop that we did at the beginning of these two. We're gonna start here again, gonna come up down to all the way towards the baseline. Like if we were doing a C, it's the same thing as the sea. And then we're gonna come appear to the middle, um, to the middle X height. And then we're gonna come down in a thick line like this, do one more time down, up like, see, come down all the way to the baseline and then down again to the dissenter line and then up . You can do it also like this. Look, I'm going to show you instead of finishing this here, you can also do this, so it kind of depends on what you want to do. Now we move on to the O and for the oh, we're going to start in the middle here and the X height gonna start here and go down, and then we're gonna go up all the way to the Ascender and then go down and thick line. And like this, it's exactly like the under Case one. But where it's just a little bigger. Okay, so we're going to do another one from the X height down all the way to the top and then down again, then to the top again. Okay, down, up, down, up. And now for the Q. It's just like an oval. So we're gonna start, and we're going to start the oval here and in the middle of our two lines here at the top. So we're going to start from here, go down and make an oval like this, and we're just gonna do a little group like that. Okay, so from the middle to the top, all the way down to the baseline, up again. And then we're gonna do this little curve right here like this. So this finishes are a second group of upper case letters.
12. The Uppercases: F I J K L S T: we're going to continue with our EFS. So what I'm gonna do is just a line from all the way to the top and down to the baseline up again. And then I'm gonna do, like, this little hat at the Ascender and then just across drug right there from the Ascender to the baseline up. Then do that. I feel like that. So moving on to that, I it's basically the same form. We're just gonna go down from the ass center to the D sender and then up like this, kind of like the f And then I just like to do this little this little curve like that down , uh, and then the curve at the end for the I. Okay. So again, we're going to do from here to the bottom, open up and to little hat like this. Okay, Now we're gonna do a J these air fun. I like Jay's. So we're going to start at the midpoint from the X height, go all the way to the Ascender in a thin line, and then we're gonna come down all the way to that this D sender, and then we're gonna come up again in a curve from the X height up in a thin line down thick and then up in a loop towards the Exline Keyser phone also. So we're going to start at the Ascender line, and we're gonna come down just in the simple line like this that we're gonna go from the center line to the midpoint and then from the mid point to the baseline again. Okay, it's one more time. Go just show up and then down. And then all the way from the center line to the middle down, moving on to the L. We're going to start with a little loop from the center line to the middle part here between these two minds and then we're gonna come down all the way to the descend. Er, I mean to the to the baseline. Then we're gonna do a little loop here, would come down a six stroke up in a thin towards the center line and then down to the baseline and up and down and up Now for the S. It's like the one we did before in the under case after bet. So it's gonna be the same thing. It's just gonna be bigger We're gonna do from this middle part right here that we've been using. So we're gonna go up in a curve, and then down we're gonna do a little curve like that, and we're gonna finish here we go up, come down. Uh, a down stroke, the down stroke. And then we're gonna come up to the baseline in a a curve, and then we're going to do this mine like this. Okay, so that's your team. Do it again, up thin and then
13. The Uppercases: H U V W X Y: next we're gonna dio the H and the H is a really fun letter for me. I really like it cause you get to do it in one stroke so we could start from the middle. Like we've been starting a lot of our letters in the middle of thes two lines. We go up and then down in a curve and then go up in a loop. OK, so you remember this shape. Now we go up again in a thick line and then down in a loop and then up again to the X Heights that our age, this might take a little practice, but it's really, really fun. So you come up and down and up on a loop and then of all the way to be a center line and then down to the D sender and up to the X height and again case of down in a loop up been loop and down and Lupin a been occur. So now are you is just gonna be super simple. It's just like the under case you. Well, it's gonna be that from the center line to the D center line to the acid airline again and then down and up again. So that's pretty straightforward. That's pretty simple. Okay, again, you down thick Upton down thick. Uh, then down, pick up thin. Now we're gonna do RV, and we're gonna start in the middle point. Like where we started our age. We're gonna start, we're gonna do a little occur down like this, and then we're gonna go up to the Ascender line and then go down in a loop and then go up again up and down and up and the loop up again. And for the double you it's exactly the same thing. But we're gonna double this. So we're going to start exactly same way in the middle line here between the Ascender and the X height line. We're gonna start, and we're gonna go up and then down and then up again, we're gonna start stopped there, and then we're gonna put her murder again on the paper, and then we're gonna come down and then up again, and you finish on a loop like that. Okay, so you might want to finish this all the way up with the centerline, or you might want to do this next thing that I'm going to do. I'm just going to stop, like, right here in the middle part of the center in the X line. Okay, so we're going to start here, gonna go down on a curve, and then up we're going to stop here. We're gonna go down again and up all the way to the Ascender line and down and up. It depends on what you want to do. But I think we'll whatever whatever is best for you. Okay, so now we're going to do the X, and it's gonna be exactly the same. Words are lower case, but it's just gonna be bigger. So we're going to start in the middle where we started in the middle of these two lines, and I'm gonna go up and down thick and then up thin and then up and down thin. Remember how we said this line? This line here could be thick or thin. I'm gonna do it with a thick line in this one. Okay, so I'm gonna go up, down, up, up, down, up. Okay, So whichever one you would want to dio Okay, so I'm gonna do up, down, up on a curve, and then up, down, thick up. Think for these upper case. These look better than this one does. Now we're gonna move on to the UAE, and we're gonna move use all the way from the center line to the D center line. This is a fun letter. So we're going to start up here in the Ascender line and then all the way up to these underline again. And then we're gonna go down to the dissenter line and then come up on a loop like that. So we're gonna do this shape like this, like we did on our drills, but from a sender to excite to Ascender. And then we're gonna come down all the way from the Ascender height to the D sender and then up to the X height.
14. The Uppercases: A M N: so last but not least, we're gonna finish up with our last group of upper case letters. So we're gonna start with the A, and it's really a personal preference of how you want to do it. Some people will do the magic school A like this. We're gonna go down from the middle X height to the top of the Ascender and then down again and up. And we do this cross line right here in the Excite. So some people do it like this, which I think is more formal or other people do it just like a little like a big A like a little big A. So we're gonna start and we're going to do an oval big oval from from the X height to the Ascender to the D sender. And then we're just gonna go line like that. So, whichever one you would prefer. Okay, So I'm gonna do this letter again just so you can practice a little bit more. We're gonna go from the Excite down to the baseline up to the Ascender height, then down to the baseline again, up to the X height line. Yeah, and we're gonna do this cross line right there. Okay, Now we're moving on to the M, and I like the M to be a little playful. So I do from this top line from this top of centerline I do online down. And then from the middle X height, you go up and then down and a loop like this, and then up and down like this. Okay, so we're gonna do a line from a sender to baseline. And then from X height to Ascender Teoh X height to kind of the Ascender, but not quite. And then down and up again. Now we do the end, which is exactly the same as a little. And we're gonna do this. So we're going to do the same line right there. Gonna go up and then down on up like that. Pretty simple. We're gonna do it again. Down and up, Down thick up. Thin, down thick from the center line to the baseline, up again. Down and up. Okay, so we're done with all over upper case letters, So be sure to upload all your practice sheets because I want to see how you're doing so far . And once you've done that, you can continue on to the next video
15. Connecting your letters & Starting your project: Okay, so let's talk about how to connect letters. You might have noticed how I've been ending all the letters with a curved upwards. This is what's gonna help connect all over cursive letters. For example, I'm gonna write my name, so I'm gonna do a capital and down and then up and then down, up, down, thick up. Okay, so this little curve is was what's gonna help me connect my letters. So I'm going to start with an A like that. And now I'm gonna do the are and then another A. So it's really important to remember. And calligraphy is that you're not doing cursive. So it's OK if you lift up your marker, it's you actually have to lift up your markers so that you can get all these letters in that way because if not, then you're gonna have a way different outcome. So every time you finish a letter or you think a stroke would be easier if you lift up your pen, then don't even think about it and just do it left up your plan. Okay, so now it's time to start your project. As I explained in the class description, we're gonna work on a funnel Liberation starting you. I think one of the most important things when you're learning how to write. Because, yeah, we are learning how to write in a different way. It's learning how to write your name. So you'll find a list of elaborations from a dizzy in the class description. Find the one with the first letter of your name and start writing, for example. My name is Mara, So I'm going to go down to the M and see what alliteration I'm gonna get. And the M A liberation is Miranda made a mushy mango and mander and mess, so I'm gonna change that time. So it's gonna be Mara made a mushy mango and mandarin mess in case I'm gonna write it down for you. Okay, so when you're done, you take a picture of your project and all of the practice sheets that you've done so far and posted in the project section. Don't forget, this is so you can get feedback and you can see what everybody else is doing. And you can compare what everybody's what everybody else's style looks like. So Okay, go ahead and do it
