How to make a Bow Tie!

1. INTRO: Hi and welcome to today Schools share lesson on how to make a bow tie Dan and said from freelance Protais. So we started making bow ties a couple years ago because we couldn't find any here in Perth that you could tie yourself or the world just plain navy or black. We have no experience running a business or anything do with fashion. Really. We study engineering on the side, and we like to take the sustainability side of that and apply it to our bow ties. So all the fabric we use sourced locally and otherwise way get old shirts. We just turned them into bow ties. Anything you can find around the house really works. So we want you to get out of this lesson is the fact that just have a crack where the ideas in fashion design attack whatever it is, have a crack. So today we're gonna be looking at making your bow tie something you already own, Whether it's an old shirt dress, some funky curtains, you going out the back, whatever it is gonna make it by Ty out of it. 2. PROJECT OVERVIEW: Okay. So as we mentioned, this project is gonna be making a bow tie and something already own. So we go through and help you with picking your fabric, making sure it's gonna work with a bow tie. What sort of shape you're gonna use, how to choose it. Based on the formality of the event, that's gonna be 12 and also the step by step, putting it together, selling, cutting all that good stuff and giving you tips and tricks we've learned along the way to make that process nice and streamlined. If you having any troubles and some of the some of the steps throughout this project, we'd love you to post questions, Andi. Photos of the issues you're having so we can try give you a hand. We also love you to post finished products and any photos of you wearing them at events because the way see it, the more people wearing by ties, the better 3. THINGS YOU WILL NEED: alright for today's project. Everything you need is in front of us. Here on the table will start going through it. This is our sewing machine. It's not really working today, so it's just for display purposes and will use we use the other one for the project. Um, I share your face a fabric that you're gonna use for it. Got some selling scissors here which are a little bit different to normal scissors. But a good paranormal says you probably get away with for this your pen pencil from walking out. Uh, Natal Fred finishing it off at the end. A, uh a knitting needle which will become clear as to why we need that later on a measuring type, which is as in cinemas. But I will try and keep up with the conversion between inches and centimeters. Everyone's on the same page on some interfacing. So this stuff is iron on interfacing. It's fairly light, uh, grade. So if you get a fabric shop a lot interfacing and under the job. But if you don't do that and you probably get away without it for this project, 4. SELECTING A FABRIC: Okay, so this is the show we've chosen for the project today. It's an old one of mine. It doesn't quite fit anymore, but it's got a nice small design on it. It's not very stretchy, and it's quite like way. So be good to work with. Alternatively, this is, um, curtain material. It's gotta plasticky backing on it, which makes it super rigid. If you did use that, you wouldn't need to do any interfacing as we mentioned before. Um then the bads, this one with apples on it is really stretching. We did it as a test, and when you talk just like stretches around, the patent fades on it. So I know what it'll yes, the things to remember when you're picking out fabric, gonna be making sure it's got a fairly small resign. If you have a design at all, no big issue if you don't make sure it's not stretchy and yeah, a little bit rigid is good 5. CHOOSING THE RIGHT SHAPE: once you pick your fabric and you ready to start choosing the shape of the bow, tie you to think about how formerly event it's going to be born out is gonna bay. So what we got here is a three different shapes, and this is about with download in the resource of section. Below the top shape is a batwing bowtie that's quite informal. Steps were in that one. Right now. The middle one is a butterfly bowtie that's quite formal. So weddings balls from not on the bottom one is a mixed training to so a nice middle ground between the informal and the formal. Yeah, that's Esteban dance got on the moment. Actually, if you're not that confident in your sewing machine would probably recommend start with the battling one of the top. It's got nice straight lines, no curves that you can have make mistakes with, I guess have. But we like to give you guys the creative license to have a try to put some little diamond point dotted lines in so you can try that you can have any shape you want to the ends off him. Having fun with it. You speak credit 6. SIZING: So you've got your fabric. You got the design. You want to make your bow tie. Now we need to look at how long you bow tie needs to bay. So what we do is we measure this conference of the next, so subs neck here is around 41 centimeters, about 16 inches on. We add on to that another 18 inches, and that gives enough for him to tie and make it look nice. So you can either measured directly or you can measure a shut, which you, which fits neck nicely and again. Same same measurement, 41 centimeters, 16 inches may add onto that the 18 inches. Then we're going to grab our old shit. I would be the material that we're using for for the bow tie. So we know the length needs to be the 16 inches plus 18 inches. So we're looking at a total length of 34 inches. Just to be safe, we're gonna leave. We're gonna say we want about 38 inches long. We then wanna make sure that the width we've got is 20 centimeters eight inches the whole way along the length on. If you don't have that much fabric in your shirt, which most it is a pretty small ship. If you don't have that length, you can just get too little sections and sew them together. So you've got the full full length before we start. All right, So what I've done is I've cut the shit just below the armpits because we find the armpits and the CO a bunch up a shirt. And so now it is one nice, flat bit of fabric. First step is the iron it. And we did forget to mention this in the resource in section you're gonna need. And I am to do this protect have ever ruined anyone's day because they have an iron, Have settings were used for the and just if it's if it's card in its normally right doesn't matter too much. But if you've got a more delicate fabric, then you don't too hot. Um and because it could just been in the fabric, so he's gonna on it 7. INTERFACING: So this is the optional step here we mentioned earlier. So this is an iron on interface picked up from the local favorite store we've cut it to about the same size is out. Is that fabric any use of the bow tie? And when we're running it on, we're gonna make sure that these shiny side to side with the glue on it is facing onto the fabric and it's facing into the reverse side of fabric. So this is our good site outside that's gonna be presented to the world and on our bow tie and the side is the reverse. So we on that down flat. Ah, bit of steam, Help se Teoh, get the adhesive melting and get it stuck. Really nice. So it's not confirmed to work with from there on 8. MARKING OUT: Okay, so once you find a flat or got you interface on need to fold it in half length ways. So this one phone, huh? So you might have your fabric overlapping a little bit. But the key thing is, if you have interface it to make sure interfacing is evenly distributed on both sides and that just you get I and nice and flat. The other key thing to remember is to make sure the, uh the good side or the nice side of having is on the inside of the fold. So in here is a good side. So once that's nice and flat, we then possiblities said, if you take care of marking it out so I'm just gonna cut off all these excess bits to my could have been easier to work with. Um what? What my selling things would say now is that you you pin the two halves together and you can do that if you like, But I guess we're probably just a bit lazy and it doesn't seem don't seem to have any issues without pinning it. Um all right, so here's out. Ready to go get a February. All right, so Now we've got a nice bit of epic readyto ready to mark out. We want to do is select a pin that it has a very similar color to the fabric or use a pencil because pencil white show three. So you grab your template that you've nicely cut out we because we re use these lots of bowtie as we take the back, just gives it a bit more strength that doesn't doesn't bend and get old crinkle You wanna for this share as it's got a couple of scenes in it, we're gonna try and avoid the seems to be on the face of the bow tie. And so I'm going to start with with the face just to one side of this. Same so that this one definitely has no same on it. So when it does place, you place your template down on the fabric, mark out your first side just by drawing around it. Do you want to grab tight measure a measure of total length. So for this it was 34 centimeters 34 inches. So, um, and put a little market. The other end is that we know that total legs we then flip template around. So it's facing the other way and do another throwing around it. All right, so now I've got at two ends, we're gonna join them with a ruler, um, on one side, the whole way across. Thank you, Daniel. And it's not quite long enough, so I'm just gonna measure how far it is off the bottom. And for a little Not so I have a middle point for the other side. For those of you who made have sown a few things that made turning inside out, we're gonna leave a little gap in the middle. So I want to do is grab the tape measure again. 17 inches halfway point for a little mark. I mean, one that join this, leaving about one inch gap around that middle point again. The width of our template is to sentiment. It is which I gave. I'll give you an A. So it's about 3/4 of an inch wide. So mark that point and, uh, and then drawing days leaving that one inch gap. And I like to put a little little tabs on the end. Just make sure remind me when I'm sorry to stop. All right? That's all knocked out 9. SEWING: All right, So you're ready to sell you the boat time? That's all marked out. We'll stop by setting up a selling machine. So it's all threaded, the tension just in the mid range and the sticks Stitch length is the important one. So for the straight sections, the long ones we're gonna use a slightly longer stitch things on my machine. It's around 2.5, please. And then around the cursed way, drop it down to a 1.5, and that just ensures that the corners come out really nice. And as we cut the, uh, the shape out afterwards, it's not gonna pull through on returning inside out. So a puppet in you want to stop on one end of the gap you've left, place it in needle in, and like before, we're gonna go for a little bit back a little bit. That just looks off the stitch. So I've got my my length 2.5 there before a little bit back and then the state down the line. Once we approached that curve, just take it up to 1.5 length and then it's nice and slowly following the cab you've got seems in it like this from the from the T shirt. Just go gently over the same stopping on the corner. Gonna get right in the corner, stick a needle in foot up and rotate it, and then do the backs back Sam again at this corner, All right? And we're off the off the curve again. We can go to a longer stick things straight down the back way. All right, now we're praising the last straight. We're gonna remember we're going to stop before we get to the to the gap as we get to the gap. And then, like at the start, we're going to go right up to the end, back a couple of stitches and afford a couple of stitches to look it off, and we asked, son. 10. CUTTING OUT: so I'm sign it already. Cut it out. We want to leave a bit of space in between where we've signed and where way cut. So, as a general rule, you want to leave a bit more than an eighth of an inch, but a little less than 1/4 inch. So I was gonna stop my cutting along this Saad, and we made it to the corners. We cut across the corners, so we just miss what we've signed and that helps us turn it out a bit Inside out a little bit later on, we follow out a shape, try to stay at around just under 1/4 inch away from where we've signed. People in the, uh, sewing will know that is the same allowance. And again, a little tip. When we get to the, uh, the gap we've left. You just leave a little bit of a tab again. That helps us finish it off later on. But all way long across the corner again, getting nice and close the corner. But he definitely did not want to cut. I cut your stitch. It's done across the corner again. Nice and tight, Honey. We'll cut out So from here, we need to make some small incisions, uh, along the face of the bow tie just so that when we do turn it inside out, if every doesn't bunch up and it turns out it's a little bit nicer. So where the, uh the stitches con que We need to make a small little cuts. Just until yet, really close up into the, uh to stitch again. Knock not cutting the statue a little under a lot of hard work. And then with me, it's what? Ah, convex, uh, shape of the of the stitch. We cut out a little bay. So So they're these tiny little bays all the way along just to make sure that when you do turn it out, the curbs come out quite nice and the fabric doesn't bunch up on the inside. So you did. You do like I it won every half inch or so would be probably about enough and again going back to the con cave section. This is ah, step, which you don't need if you just doing a straight batwing bowtie. Um, so that will save you the time. Once you've done that for both sides, you ready attendant inside out 11. TURNING: Okay, here's what we're gonna need a knitting needle. So we found it's a really good tool for getting the same to Tony and sought out. So if you've used in face, then now is a good time just to give a quick and make sure it's all set If you haven't, don't worry about that. This one looks looks fine as it is not too crinkled up or anything. So it is just possible the ferry between your fingers a bit so you can loosen up the two sides from each other. And from there you can sort of push it one of the corners back inside itself. From there, you need needle the blunt end and just push it back through itself. And to you get to the gap You left and this party really gentle. Make sure enough gonna, um, police stitching out or or damaged bow tie. And you sort of get to come out this little gap, get being gentle, So pass it over itself. Retrieve your knitting needle from the inside. Okay. And again, just between your fingers is rubbing it until it's sort of you get a feel for it. It's just pushing the fabric out against the same From there, we're almost finished. Just need to get the rest of the show going and do that again. The needle this time the pointy end again. Gonna be very careful not to push the needle all the way through the fabric. So we just sort of need it through. You need the corners out just gently pushing and pulling back, pushing, pulling back. And a guy that corn is nice. Same again Here, push against the corners until you feel that attention. Then come off it. Just working away until you go. Corn is out. Knauss and lessen claim. That's one side done and obviously Sammy get on the other side. She just rolled over. Try and push one of the corners onto the inside of the bow tie, and then blunt ended the knitting NATO. We're using a knitting needle, but it's probably other implements in the world that could do the same job I just found. It's quite convenient. We'll have any needle around the place. I just needed through nice and gentle. No rush, uh, any guy. And she is Yes. Can the pointy end through It's really careful. Not to push it through the fabric. All three is sitting here to be last and gentle. Really get a good bank already. That's right. He always gonna on a flat. A few little tips have got. That we've learned over the last couple of years is that if you put it between your fingers and roll it and get it right out towards the stitch, it turns that way. And I saw So you want to roll it a bit, starting at one end, get some steam going in your I'm and I and that that end flat. Start with. And then if you turn it the other way and then just wiggle it through it gets to the same ride out. Then on these length bits, if you wiggle it between your thumb while you're going down the iron, it normally comes out really nice. You do the same on the other end, beginning with wiggling it out, learning that the end of it, then going straight down the other than and we should have No, it's flat bowtie 12. FINISHING: All right, Run to the final step now, and that's hand sewing up. This little gap was left. Now you have to excuse my hands sign because the bow ties we sell on our website I made in two lengths so that we could make them adjustable, so we don't do this very often. But it's not that important because it sits under your koa at the back. So no one's going to see it to stop by getting length about threat. Probably wanting Iran ID eight inches. We're gonna time. Not at one end. Um, I have no idea. The best way to time. No, I normally just It would just be equivalent a few granny nuts if you call on Granny. Not in America. Put the other end through through the needle. Now we want to stop coming through from the inside so that that not stays on the inside. If you open, not be gap a bit. This is what we left these tabs for. When we cut it out, you can get under this tab and come up out through the back. I'd love to be a tail on here. Something's gonna chop off the tail after the after the no, pull it, pull it through, then put the tab back in. That way, we're ready to sew it up. Okay, so then we just moved gradually across. You just want to get just the tabloid. You don't want to go right through to the outside of the bow tie. You just get one side, and then you pick up a little bit of the other side and then pull it through and we just work our way down. And realistically, if you're making this for yourself, you probably don't even need to sell it up because no one's gonna see it. But what professional? So we do it properly, Let me get to the other end. We need to tie another knot so we do a normal stitch. But before we pull it right through, what you want to do is put the end the needle back through that loop you've created, and then pull it tight. And that makes a little not gonna do two of them just to be size. So again, through find the lift you've made and then put the needle through the loop, pull it nice and tight. That's done The trick we do is we then put the natal backs through there and at somewhere else and then cut it up there because that why the tally have created is now on the inside of the time and we're done. 13. FINAL THOUGHTS: So there you have it, folks. Very tired. And I'm an up cycled T shirt. I'm sure you can't wait to see it tied up.
