How to Easily Create and Edit Videos with Canva

1. Hi and Welcome!: Hey, my name is Tamara and I've been a designer for 15 years. I've worked at various agencies as well as read my own freelance design studio. And now I'm here to share my knowledge and teach you the tricks that I've learned over the years. And in this video, we're going to cover the basics of video editing. Video can be a really effective way to capture your audience's attempt. Especially on things like social media. We're scrolling through and there are a bunch of static photos. When you see a video, it draws you in. This tutorial is completely beginner friendly. So if you've never touched video editing in your life, don't worry, I'm going to start from the base text and walk you through exactly step-by-step on how to create your video. We're going to be using a free video editing program within Canva. So there's no need to purchase any pricey video editing software. But in this class you're going to have all the skills you need to create professional and even videos within Canada. Okay, I can't see you jump into this class with you. Let's get started. 2. Setting Up in Canva: Okay, so in this first chapter we're going to cover the basics of Canvas. So I'm going to talk a bit about how to set up your video file, as well as the different tools available to build your video. All right, so when you first get to the Canvas homepage, there are a few different ways to set up your video. And you'll see this big banner at the top that says, What will you design See you can click on video right there and then select the video that you want to make. There's different dimensions based on where your video's going to be watched. Your video's going to watch on a computer monitor or TV. You might wanna do 1920 by 1080. But if your video is probably going to be viewed on a phone, then he may want to stick with the 1080 by 1920. If you have a Pro account, there's a really easy way that you can move between sizes and then it will automatically resize your video. Give a free account doing that spectrum here. So for the purposes of this class, we're going to do a video 1920 by 1080. So then you can just click Create blank. And that is going to bring up a blank video template. Right away you're going to see a big blank screen. This areas where you're going to preview your video. And below it, you'll see what's called the timeline. So there'll be a Play button. You're going to see the first clip in here right now it's blank and a plus sign, and this is how you add in new clips. Below that you'll see the time. So you'll see that right now we're currently at 05 seconds. And there's this little cursor, black cursor that you can click and drag down. And that's how you can easily scroll through your video. And you'll notice when I'm dragging that, the time down here also changes the right of that. At the bottom you'll see this little icon when you hover over it, it says zoom. So this is how you can zoom this main video area in. Now. Personally, I like to have it so I can see the whole video. And if you click on it again, you'll be able to zoom the timeline in and out. So this is really good. If you want to get super close up and zoomed into your clips, you can make those small little changes. Again in the top corner here you'll see five seconds and that is the total length of the video. You can adjust it here and they'll just the clip. And on the left-hand side you're going to see all the templates. So There's gonna be a lot of different options here. Right now I'm using my free account to show you what you'll see if you also have a free account. But if you have a pro accounts, you're going to have a lot more options in terms of what templates are available to you. If you hover over them, you'll see that they stay. Some of them say free and some of them don't say anything. Or that one says Pro. So you'll be able to see which ones are available to you. Okay, in the next video, I'm going to talk a bit about stock video clips, adjusting the length of your clips, as well as adding in transition. See you there. 3. Video Clips & Transitions: So for this video, I'm going to use a combination of template clips as well as creating my own from scratch. And this will just give you a good foundation for when you want to build your video. I'm going to use this template here at the top where it says Take care of your mental health. So once you click into a template, you'll see all of the different clips available to you. You don't have to use all of the clips from the template. You can pick and choose which ones you want, or you can use them all if that's what you wanna do too. So we're going to start off with this first clip. You click on it, it just pops it right into your video timeline. And you can see it down here below. And if you want to preview that video, you can either press play and that's going to play the video through, or you can hit Spacebar and that's a quick way to preview your video as well. And then to pause it, you can hit Space-bar again. Hey, that looks pretty good. And I'm going to be adding in the second clip now after this first clip. And for this one, I'm going to find some stock video footage of a nature scene. So let's do this. Tree click here under nature, and I'm just going to drag and drop that. You'll see this little line that pops up right after the clip. It's a purple line. And that means that when I release my mouse button, it's going to pop it in right there. So there it is. And if I click on this first clip again, on the bottom left-hand corner, you're going to see the total length of the clip. So that's coming up at 6.7 seconds. So for this second clip, you can see it, it has 11.8 seconds as the link, which is the default length of this particular clip. Every clip is going to be different. But I want that to match up. So I'm going to just click on that and change that to 6.7 seconds. So it's all consistent and click Done. When you're done changing the layer. Another way that you can easily change the length is if you click on the clip and hover over it, you're going to see these little toggles pop up on the left and right side. And you can just kinda hold and drag until you get your clip to the right leg. Alright, and I'm going to add in one more clip after the tree. And add in this one. Some leaves blowing in the wind here. And we are going to change that as well to 6.7 seconds. So clicking on that time against its 17. Hitting done. Okay, and so now the timeline you can see I've got my first intro clip, and then I have two clips that play after it. And if you hit space bar, you can watch the whole thing through. Just make sure everything's looking how you want it to look so far. So you can see when I switch from one clip to the next, It's pretty abrupt. It's just a transition, isn't really a transition, just switching the clips. So what we're gonna do is add in some transitions, make it a bit easier on the eyes. How you do that is you'll see these little plus signs in between the video clips. Click on the plus sign and the top. Little icons has add page. So that's one way to add in another video clip there. But below it, it says Add transition. So you click on that, you'll come up with this little menu that will show the different transitions that you can add in. So for this one, if you, if you hover over them or click on them, it's going to show you a preview of what they look like. But for this one, since this is going to be a very calming video dissolve is a pretty good option. Slowly transitions into the next video clip. And you can adjust the duration than the transition Settings in the menu as well. So we're going to change that to 1.5 seconds. So one way that you can add transitions is just go through and click that Plus on each one and add the same transition. But there's also a quick way to do it as well. You'll see this button at the bottom of the transitions menu where it says apply between all pages. You click that, then it's automatically going to apply that same transition between all your pages. Okay, this is looking pretty good. And next step I'm just going to add in a final screen. So I'm gonna go back to my templates and grab that last screen, drag and drop it at the end of my video clip. And again, we're going to make sure that is 6.7 seconds, 6.6. So we'll just quickly adjust that up here. Sometimes if you use the toggles and you can't get an exact, so I find it easier just to click on the time and adjust the time that way. And the next segment I'm going to talk a little bit about how to add animations to the entire page, as well as animating. 4. Page & Text Animations: We're going to talk a little bit about how to add animations to your video. Animations can be a really good way to make your video look more professional and draw people in. So we're on our first clip right now. And what you can see is in the top menu here, you'll see little toggle and it says breathe. So breathe is the animation that's currently applied to the entire page. If you click on it, you'll see that you can change the animation. So depending on what animation you want, you can select it here. If you want to apply different animations to each elements in the video clip, what you can do is first of all, ungrouped. If you have text that's grouped together, you'll see it here. It'll say group. But if it says Ungroup, just ungroup it. So then that means you can click on the text separately. And then you can animate the elements individually. So for this little star, you can click Animate at the top and select the animation. So rise, looks pretty good. Then for this first sentence, take care of your, we are going to animate that separately. So if you hover over the different animations and I'll show you a quick preview of them. Kinda like that block looks, We'll do that one. And then mental health will do. That. Looks pretty good balance. So now you can see that there's a different animation applied to each of the different elements. Okay, and next step we're going to add some text to these blank pages. This is going to be a bit of a quick meditation video advertisements. So for this first page, we're going to have it saved, breathe in. And I'm gonna make this quite big. And let's change that to whites because you want to make sure it's easier to read. Right now there's quite a busy background going on. So any text that's going to be put on the sleazy background, if it's not whites and bold, if it's going to be tricky to see. So let's do breathe and then we'll animate it with what's do a block again just to kinda make everything consistent. And then for the second screen, what I'm gonna do is just copy that text, so Control C or Command C. And then click on that second screen with my other background and command B, control B. And that's going to paste it right in with the same formatting and everything. It's even going to paste the animation in as well. So we're going to just double-click on the text and we'll change it to say breathe out. Okay, and I'm going to quickly scroll through that. So breathe in, breathe out. Okay. So that's looking pretty good. In the next segment, we're gonna talk about how to search for different elements to add in your videos like illustrations and photos, as well as animating them. Bella. 5. Animating Elements: Key elements are really neat ways to add variation to your videos. So we're going to add in a few here. On the left-hand side, you'll see there's a category called elements. So under elements, there are a bunch of different subcategories. You'll see all photos, graphics, videos, and audio. So for this screen, I want to add in a shape behind the text. Let's make it just a little bit easier to read. So I'm going to add in a graph, and then I'm just going to search for a blog. And that's going to bring up a bunch of these organic shapes. So this one looks pretty good here. So we can add in a shape behind the text just to make the text a little bit easier to read. And to animate the shape, I'll have to do is click on it and you'll see that animates menu item pop up. And you can select the animation that you'd like. So I'm gonna do right? And in this same menu, you can also change the color of the element and flip it horizontal or vertical, crop it, things like that. So that looks pretty good. And I'm going to add in another organic shape behind this one as well. So we're going to use that same pink color just to make everything consistent and animate it as well with the rise of my animations are working here. So block on that and then breathe out. I'll scatter plot is looking good. Okay, And on the last page, we are going to add in an arrow. So when you search for graphics under, if you click on this little icon here for filters, you can select if you want them static or animated. A really cool things for videos is to add an animated graphics. So I'm just going to add in this little arrow that's going to eventually point to like a website chapter. We're going to talk about frame, what they are and how to add photos and videos. 6. Using Frames: So frames are one of my favorite features in Canvas. You can access them by going to the Elements tab on the left and then scrolling down until you see frames. Simply click See All. It'll bring up all the different shapes for the frames. You're going to see this landscape hype graphic, and that's just a place holder graphic letting me know that you can insert any videos or photos into it. So for this one we're going to use a circle. If you click on it, you'll see it just pop right into your video. And so mentally this and move this down. We're gonna, we're gonna change this text up in a bit. So unless last screen, I think it would be great to have a photo of a person to add a little bit more personality and trust to the video. So I'm gonna do a search under videos so you can either add a photo or a video frames. In this case, I'm going to do video and I'm just going to search for hacking. And then I need to do is drag and drop your video into the frame and you'll see it pop in there. And you can let go. And you'll see now your video is inside that great, but it's a really neat effect. And. 7. Uploading Assets: Okay, typically when you're creating a video, you may want to add in your logo at the end. And that just gives your video a little bit more professionalism and trustworthiness. So I'm going to delete this logo that's in here currently. An under uploads. I've already uploaded my logo. But all you have to do is if you have video footage or photos or a logo or anything like that, you'll see this video that says Upload Media. And that's where you can select your, your media. So I'm just going to insert my logo here in the bottom. And you'll see the lines pop up and then you'll know how everything's aligned to the center. Contact us to join our free meditation from saying that it's probably good to have a way to contract. So I'm just going to add in my website at the bottom. Switch up the typeface to something a little bit simpler. A really neat tool that you can use when you want to change your type to all uppercase. Right here, we'll see it says uppercase. And that'll just quickly change everything to uppercase. You can adjust the letter spacing and line spacing with this icon. We're just going to take that down a little bit because it needs to be that bank. And there's also this other feature here. So say for example, you're making a video for Instagram, or maybe you're trying to sell something on Instagram and you want to take a video of you showing the item. You can actually record yourself directly through Canvas by cockiness record yourself button. And that's going to bring up a window with a bunch of settings that you can choose from. And it will automatically record you and save that video into Canvas. So then it's going to be really easy to drag and drop it into your project. In the next video, I'm going to cover a bit on how to add and layer in audio. See you there. 8. Adding Music: All right, so adding an audio is a really great way to make your video feel a bit more immersive and professional. You can either click it at the top here where it says the audio, or you can scroll down and you'll see audio, we can see all. So you can use keywords to search for the type of audio that you're looking for. You can preview them to by pressing this Play button. And that's a little few upbeat for a meditation video. Little sad. That one sounds pretty good. It'll have a little bit of details about the audio to beside it. So you'll see the link at the bottom. You'll see what kind of vibe that has. So this one has a whole vibe. Well, that when I previously was more of a satisfies, we don't want to walk. And then you can just drag and drop your audio track in below your video time, your videos on your timeline. So let's see here. And then you'll see it'll pop it. So in this case, it just popped in right where my cursor was on the timeline. So I'm just going to adjust this. And then I am going to click on my audio track and you'll see those toggles pop up again. It's going to click and drag. We want the audio to be playing throughout the entire sequence here. I'm just going to move that click and drag. There we go. It's at the beginning, so I need to drag the end of the audio part over. And now you'll see their audio clip is going to play throughout an entire video. Let's just preview that and see how it's looking at. My computer's having a little heart of time previewing. But everything seems we're looking pretty good. I think it's a little loud, so I'm just going to click on my audio. And in the top right, you'll see the volume control. And I'm just going to turn it down to about 75 percent. So that's going to be the better with audio. There's also the option to him layer audio. So for example, if you did a video of yourself, you could always add in a song behind. Just to kinda give it a bit more of like a musical vibe. But if you do something like that and make sure that the music behind you talking as super quiet. So it's really easy to hear what you're saying. You can also use layer, the audio shoe ad in sound effects. So if you want your main audio track plane behind the whole thing, but then you have parts of your video where you have text popping in and you want like a pop sound factor, something like that. Layering audio is a good way to get those effects. Layer audio only need to do is just drag and drop your new audio track. You want to drop it in above or below the old one. And you'll see it pop in at the second audio track. And from there you can address where you want that audio track to play, as well as the volume. 9. Previewing & Exporting: So once you have your video looking how you want it to look, what you can do is preview your video. So how you do that is you can click on this Play button at the top. Beside it, you'll see the total length of your video. So my videos, 21.5 seconds. Just going to click that. Hey, that looks pretty good. I wasn't on the scene. The shapes in the background, we're kind of just popping in without animating in. And I think that just may have been an issue with my computer not able to render the animations in the preview. So if you see something weird happening on your computer, just go in and double-check. I'm clicking on it and I'm seeing that it does have the rise animation in there. I'm just going to fade in just to make sure it looks good for sure. But yeah, it is applied. So the final video will have that effect on. So once you're happy with your video, you can now download it. So just hit this download button on the top right, and it'll come up with MP4 video. That's the format that you'll want for your video. And click download, and it'll save that video file to your future. So from there you can open it up on your computer or you can upload it to Instagram. I'm stream it to your television, whatever you need. If you have quite a large video file and say, it's a little too big to send to people and you need to email it to someone. What you can do is click on the Share button at the top. And then underneath you'll see this little area where it says Share Link edit. So you can send them to someone if you want them to be able to edit it, then you can also share links watch. Then you can copy that link and e-mail it to whoever you want to access it. One really neat tool that you have access to that I mentioned before, if your Canva pro user is ability to resize your video. So if you have made a video in this landscape format 1920 by 1080, but now you want to use your video on Instagram. You can always upload this video to Instagram, but it's not going to fill up the screen on your phone. So I'd recommend clicking this resize button and changing it to a be 1080 by 1920. And then that way you can upload it to Instagram. It's going to look really good. Camera will automatically resize everything so it fits in that resolution. You might have to make a few adjustments here and there, but it's going to be pretty easy to resize your video. If you have camber free. Unfortunately, this options may be available to you and you're going to have to create a new video and kinda copying pasting or different elements. 10.
