1. Intro: Hi there. My name is Francesca, and I'm in Italian surface and textile designer with a great passion for sketching and watercolors. Drawing this class is all about out to digitize your artworks using for the shop, created equally out with them and use it to build the notebook from scratch. I'm going to use the food. Sketches were made during the classes serious food sketching. But if you haven't followed the classes, that's not a problem. They thinks I'm going to show. You can be applied to any kind of artwork, no matter if. For your notebook. You want to use your flower drawings or a quote you and growth. For example, if you took the previous classes of the serious by now, you should have a TME food sketches that we will transform you nearly out because you don't want to make a notebook. The layout itself could be used as a prince and framing toe and in your kitchen, For example, learn how to create any five notebook is super easy, and you can use the same skills with any kind of card stock over, like scrapbook paper or some fancy packaging as it so often I mean, I love to make my own covers, but sometimes I just need it notebook stock. So I use other kind of materials making a notebook that really suits your needs. Take less than 10 minutes, even just using a certain needle and a couple of staples. I use mind playing our weekly meals, but you can use it as a food journal to track your favorite restaurant or as a recipe notebook. Or just as a notebook with the Amick over. You can mix different type of papers for the pages, like other names. A plain paper page, Teoh agreed. One or any kind off other combos you can think of. I make a new notebook for every sketcher class I teach for planning my project and also make a few in a traveler notebook sides to scrapbook my trips. Making your notebook is really addictive, and you will start to create different ones for any occasion. They are greatest gifts or needs, like me plan classes. You take least mullah journal anything in the project section of the class, you will find three different part paper pattern ruler greed and doubted that you can download and print out for your project. It's platter image that you can use as a background layer for your layout. The part then we're going to use to create the inner pockets of our not move. Cover three labels you can use to customize your notebook and a step by step. Pdf with the process to clean your art. Working for the shop, plus some other useful information. I will guide you step by step through the whole process, and I'll give you all my tips and tricks to make the process quick and easy. So rub your artworks unless starts work. 2. Materials: Welcome to this class that starts with the supplies were going to use. First of all, we will need a computer with for the shop. Any version after this? Yes. Three will work fine. If you don't have for the shop, you can download a seven days trial from their website and I leave you feeling in their your project section of this class. We will have to import our artworks on the computer so we can use a smartphone. I'm using my iPhone six for this class or a scanner. If you have one in the project section, you will find several files. A paperback zip files a labels file it splatter pattern. A foodie pockets page is the best. A PdF. Once you have downloaded the files toe open the zip file, you just double click on the icon and a folder with the same name will appear inside it. You will find three files in a 45 millimeters greed paper. Any 45 millimeters allotted papers and any fight before Sorry. Ruling paper. The Liberals file has three labels on it and empty 11 for food journal and one for many. Planner, just in case you need them this platter if I that you can use as your layouts bedroom and the footy pockets page that it's a file that you can use if you don't want to create it on your own Anyway, I'll explain you how to make it in the layout lesson of this class. You will also find the PdF with the suburbs step guide to my artwork screening process and other useful from at the end of this class. You will find the bonus lesson about how to make your own splatter background, and if you want to do it, you will need a brush. Besides, three will were great and black ink. I use a super cheap one. You don't need to have any fencing for these. The front I'm going to use for the artworks, layout and the footy pocket. It's called Westchester. It's free for personal and commercial use, and you can download from the link you will find in the project section to be selling your phone on a Mac. You just double click on it and click over a cell phone. Then you will find it in the front library and in all your programs If a program is already open during the Easter process, you have to close it and reopen it to see the new Franta in the Programs Front library to make our notebook, we will use a pencil, some a four printer page sheets, as many as the page you want to have in your notebook. Not that I know that we are making any five notebook, so each a four double side printed paper will give us four single pages. My notebook will have 32 single pages, so I'm going to bring eight a four sheets double side into white, a four car suck. The better wait is between 222 150 GSM. If thicker, you may have issued to print it. If thinner, it won't be starting enough. Told your pages to bind, we will need a bone folder. It's a pretty expensive tool, but you can use the flat side of the Caesar. If you don't want to buy one. A pair of Caesar and a double tapered easy. I will use a long term stapler. I bought mine from eBay a few months ago for less than $10 I love it, but if you don't plan to use it frequently, I'm going to show you how you can be in the notebook with just a starting it'll and to be excites staples. So don't worry. We can do it without buying any extra tools. Last but not least, off course, you need your artworks. Any artwork will be perfect. I use the ones I drew for their food sketching classes years. But as I mentioned in the introduction video, you can use any drawing or sketch you want. The process will be the same now that we have seen all the supplies we can starts with importing and cleaning our artworks in for the shop. 3. Import & refine: food sketches: So, first of all, we need to upload our artworks on the computer. To do that, we can have two options. Basically, we can scan them. So if you have a scanner you can select as a resolution at least 300 B p I and save them as JPEG. It's perfectly fine. Otherwise, you can use your iPhone as I'm going to do and in this case, just mind to take individual pictures. No, not an an entire page one, because otherwise you will have a very bad resolution for each element. It's really best toe take a single shots off each single elements, and then we can combine all them together on for a shop. So once you have applaud them and you have in a folder on your computer, we can start to clean them. Let's start with opening in. If I a four or letter sides 300 BP, I and of course, RGB mode. The first thing that I'm going to do it so rotated of 90 degree to have it horizontal and the other thing that I want to start with, it's to a place and work on this platter background for this brother background. You have two options. You can make your own. And I have made ah Bonhams lesson at the end of this class to show you my message for creating my own. Or you can use this platter J. Peg file that I have prepared for you and that you can download from the project section off this class. As you can see, the background is Gracia instead of white. So using the combo common the or control plus L, I opened the level adjustments and I move the right aero toward left to increase the white . I don't mean to check if it's OK. The black dots on the right have lost their value, so I used the level adjustment again. To be sure to work mostly on the black spots, I select the Black Dropper. Then I click on a black dog that I want. So darken and I moved toe the arrow towards right until I feel that the black as the right separation. Since it's still not good enough, I use the combo Common or control plus W for the magic wand, and I click on the black spot to select them all. And I use again the level adjustment this time Getting the pitch black I need I saved this platter file as a separate gee peg to have it available for any future projects. The next step is refined and clean up each food element. I start with 30 leaning. I recite them, shrinking it down to the sites that I think I will keep for the layout to correct the color . I start again with the level adjustment to bring the paper back to white and increase the dark tones as well. To select the little I click el on the keyboard, and I started to selecting only the tortellini and using common plus C and common plus B. I copy it and paste on a new layer. I had the original layer, and I use the magic wand to select the white and raise it with the next base of the keyboard to refine the colors. Marge's I click E for the race tool, and I move along the outline to clean them all toe corrects more mistakes in the colored areas without losing the water color texture. A click s for the stamp tool. I really use the brush sites toe work better on small areas. Letter telling is good now so we can move to the muscle. I do the exact same steps as for totally. If you're is something by mistake, you can always go back by using the combo common plus Z to undo the last step or common plus out plus z to go back off more steps and keep doing the same step for all the elements . So I won't repeat every steps all over again. But if you have any questions about anything you see me doing here, please feel free to ask me in the discussion section of the class and I will answer as soon as possible. Okay, - But now all of our elements are clean and separate one for each layer so we can start to work on hourly out. The last thing I do is swim for the splatter background, just drug. By dragging the icon from the desktop to my workspace and for the shop in the next lesson, we're going to create hourly out 4. Import & refine: flowers: for those of you guys, they're not using the food sketches for making their cover for the notebook. I'm gonna show you a very quick video where I correct and apply the same principles that I've explain in the previous lesson with another subject. So this is a flower sketch that of me and he are basically I'm doing the same the same steps all over again, Like I start to be the level adjustment. Then I use the laser tool for making the selection off my flower, and I'm copping investing in a new layer. So here I have made some things likely different Just placing a dark grey background, kids, I needed to know where I have some small dots and things that probably couldn't be seen well enough with the agreed that for the shop has. And even if I put something white, I have the same kind of issues. If I've put something black the same, so I try to go with some kind off dark agree. That's the best way for me to see any spots or anything that needs to be corrected. And I just do this by creating a new layer and using the buckets, all that it's you can call it with the shortcut g from your keyboard and selecting the color from the color swatches. So something very easy to do and it tells me a lot in speeding up the process. So here I'm just basically going over every single spot that I see. And since these drawing it's a little bit more complex than the sketches that I've cleaned before. You're going to see me, uh, doing the things that will be thoroughly on a little bit slower. So the event, if it's really speed up, it took me like 15 minutes, Stokely properly and the other things that I'm going to do in in a few seconds, it's Teoh use much more the they cross them tool because there are things that I need to fix, especially some extra lines, like outlines that have drawn with my friend liner. Here I'm musically correcting someone or spots, and here I'm correcting some outlines that when outside the borders and just basically, I try to do something very not so much invasive when it comes to use, the close them too, because sometimes the effects could be that you have exaggerated with it. And I mean, sometimes you can notice that you have used the system to so try to put it at 0% off hardness, cause it's better the thing that, besides, I mean that the borders would be Let's move there and softer and try to don't overdo the point year. It's not. So have, um, a perfect design, the disease sketch. So it has to maintain his catch look, because otherwise it knows all this sense. I mean, you can easily drawing something similar in Illustrator, and it's perfect here. I'm trying to thinner a little bit these lines that it's too thick in minutes. I mean, I've drawn it with the same financier and everything, sometimes just some lines. Seems Ficker probably. I went over with my expression. Anyway, to correct it. I'm using the same clone tool, and I'm just pay attention to place the selector off the color, the one that you select with the picking out the option key very close. So the area that you need to clone and the last thing I'm gonna show you it's that after I finish my drawing, I raised the background layer on the original drawing, and I'm saving it as a PNG. I'm seeing it as a PNG because since it has already it perfect a perfectly transparent background, it's easier if you save it in PNG, you can always reopen it as I'm showing here from my desktop. When you open in preview, you see that the background, its allies agree. That means that you don't have any background, any white background, that it's something that is going to happen all the time. If you use J Peg auction for seven, so this way you can use it as a key part or just. It's already ready to be placed on any other kind of layout and everything. So I always tried to save the copy as a PNG that speed up a lot of money process. 5. How to create a layout in Photoshop: Now that we have all our elements and this platter background on our document, we can start to play around with them to see where we prefer to have them. A good prick. It's to lock the background layer so you avoid to pick it by mistake, moving it from the original position. There are no specific rule about how to lay down our elements is something that depends from your personal preference. Since these layout is going to be used as a cover, I know that I want to have some bigger elements pizza, tacos and stick spread on the two sides off the page. I also keep in mind that is going to be folded enough and that my front cover will be the one on the right. Off the page, I realized that the elements are too big to be placed in a pleasant way, so I reduce the sites of each of them individually. To be sure, don't have elements that will fall over the folding line. I used a guide centered if you just drug the guide from the ruler on the left side of your workspace towards the sender and revisit this snap function will allow you to place it exactly in the middle without any effort after some more moving and reciting. I'm happy with Molly out, and I started throughout the names of the elements. That's my preference to spice up and making the layout more interesting. But off course you can skip this part if you don't want to add them. The front amusing is called Westchester. As I was mentioning in the material Slesin and you can download from the link you can find in the project section of this class. I use the word text option toe work. The text around the elements outline the option and choose is the arch without any adjustment and the present. I keep adding texts and rotate or were pit depending from the shades off the corresponding element. While adding the text, I realized that with it, the layout is not my cup of tea anymore. So I start to move elements around until I'm satisfied with the look. - This brother background and the text doesn't look work well together, so I unlock and rest. Arise this platter layer and using the re stool, I can sell all the spots that are behind the letters, making them difficult to read or messy. - The last touch on the cover early out is to fill up some areas off the background that have less spots. Since it's a picture off my handmade spell out their pattern, it's normal that there are areas with the minor concentration of dots and spots. So if you want a more cohesive look, you can use the laser tool to select spots, bluster and copy and paste them in a new layer to place where you feel you need more. I also rotate and scale them to be exactly how I want. It's time to to prepare our inner cover. I create a new document using the same settings for that I used for layout. So 300 BP I RGB and landscape oriented and using the same phone and text tool, I write different words rated to food and many like in three starters Main course, etcetera. I wrote nine of them, and I place them into lines on the top of this off the page. - Since I realized I have more space to feel, I start to thinks through some extra words word I move them until they are equally spaced. Thank I select all the text layer and using the combo common plus G, I duplicate all the layers I dragged the duplicated layers under. But what more character? I ship them so the words we replicate in different ways. Along the page I kept duplicating and moving each couple of lines, placing them in different ways. So the world order keep changing. After six lines, I selected all the layers, duplicate them and repeat them under the original six line, placing them in the same exactly position. This time I select the first to alliance again and do the same process to fill the remaining space at the bottom of the page. I realized that the second line is basically I'd and I can just see some letters here and there. I raise all the words of these lines and after. If you try out to see if the layout was good, I select all the attacks early years, duplicate them and murdered duplicated ones using the combo common plus T. Then I discard all the textile a years. Okay. The last thing is to reduce the positive off the words layer to 18% because I want that disease like a subdural print, not a bolt eye catching one. I saved the inner cover in pdf. I uploaded my inner cover. PDF in the project section of the class. If you want to skip this part, let's see what you will find in the paper zip file attached to the class. When you open it, you see three files, one with fine millimeters Greek paper, one with road paper and one with five millimeter. Dr. Page, you can select one of them. Go over print, select no margin option from your prince menu. And pretty, How many copy you need for my notebook? As I was mentioning before, I'm printing eight sheets double side, so my notebook will have 32 single pages. Check also that the double side option is checked so you'll have the page ready for your notebook. I bring my pages on regular printer paper 80 GS Um, and now we can print our cover page to bring these. I use a thicker paper it running, and 50 GSM cars look so the cover will be started. The attention to select the no margin option in your print menu toe about any issue along the margin, I reduce the prince size at 99% just a little bit smaller. To be sure that any part of the elements in the layout will be cut out, I repeat the exact same steps and setting also to print the pocket foodie page. The last thing I print are the labels on just regular printer paper, and you can no lo them from the project section of the class. 6. How to create and bind your notebook: off the camera. I individually folded the eighth dotted pages I printed out and have placed them wanting to another like a notebook. The first thing is to fall our covering health. I used a bone folder to refine the folding line and have it more neat. Then I place their pocket pattern to understand how wide I want my pockets to be. I use the ruler to have the exact measures, and I make a couple of marks with my fancy, and I'm also marking for the middle line so I can that the paper in our easily both our covers are a four sites, but the pockets me a little bit smaller to fit easily in the cover, so I pay attention to live out seven millimeters and to mark our middle line at 14.5 centimeter, I use a paper trimmer to cut, but you can use a pair of Caesar. It will work perfectly fine anyway, after checking that the pocket size is correct, I placed the printed pages inside the cover and check the alliance correct. And using a long arm stapler, I stapled keeping for four since emitter from the top edge of the paper. Keep in mind that you want to have the spine of the staple outside and the pointy edges inside, so you have to place the notebook according to your stapler. To have that with mine, I have to keep the cover facing me. Why the pages face the table. If you have a longer term stapler, you can move on and do the same process from the bottom image. But if you don't have this kind of stapler here, it is what you can do to binding easily. I use a starting needle to punch a hole from inside out. I move and rotate the needle to enlarge the hole a bit. Since the staples are a little bit thicker than my needle. I take out to Staples and measure once with, so I know where I have to poke the second hole. I mark the spots and I punch using they needed. Now I feel the notebook, and I realized that the second hole it's a little bit off the folding line, so I punch it from the cover through the pages to correct it. Now I just put this table's flaps through the holes. You should try to keep it pretty. Even so, it would be easier to sleep into the holes. Then you can feed your notebook with the cover facing now and using the flat side of Caesar , you can close the papers pointy legs carefully. Try to bend the legs down. You won't be scratch it by them. When you right on the centre pages. Our notebook is down was it reads right, Let's out. The pocket and the label touch their pocket. I used double sided tape on three sides. Pay attention to place the abusive on the bottom side after checking that the words orientation. Otherwise, you may end up with the text upside down. It's already happened to me. Place the first pocket carefully down on the cover, checking to match the left and the bottom margins. Then repeat the steps with the other side of the colder laxity. The label. I bring it on printer paper, and I have got it just using my Caesar. Then I used double sided tape toe a deer it through the inner cover. Our notebook is down. After creating your 1st 1 I promise you will become addicted to make your own interval customize notebook. 7. Outro & project: thank you so much for taking this class. I really hope that you enjoyed it as much as I loved Burberry. The project for this class is to create your own notebook with your artwork. You can use the process we have learning his class to customize your notebook by choosing different paper patterns, creating your only out with any of your artworks. And if you prefer to create a layout to print and hang in your home, it will be perfect anyway. And I'd love to see them. I will be super happy if you upload your project in the project section of the class. And if you have any questions, comments or feedback, please feel free to ask me in the discussion section of the class and I'll answer you as soon as possible. I'd really love to get in touch with you. See you soon with my next class. Bye. 8. Bonus: How to create a splatter background: making his brother background is super simple. Just dip your brush into the ink and, using something like a pencil pen or another brush starts to beat your ink and brush, moving it around the page. Dip your brush into the ink as many times as you need to obtain bigger spots. You can use a bigger brush or just go closer to the paper. When you be thinking brush, the closer you are to the page, the bigger the spots will be. The forest you are, the smaller the spots will be. Keep doing it until you reach this platter density you like. And remember that if you're going to digitize your file, you can always add spots or remove them in for the shop to create the perfect background you need.
