How to Design Retro Poster, vintage travel poster

1. How to illustrate a travel poster: Hello, my name is Omar Escalante. I am a travel poster illustrator. When I have the chance to travel, I take the opportunity to illustrate those unique places and turn it into a travel poster. This time I am in the city of Antigua, Guatemala. And T goes a small city surrounded by volcanoes in southern Guatemala. In this course, I will teach you my technique of how to illustrate a unique travel poster. And we will look for those places that make the city so special. And then we will go in search of the most traditional colors of the city. And we will create a palette of the most traditional colors of this beautiful city. This course is for illustrators of all levels, as well as designers and lovers of art and traveling that are looking to find their own artistic language and travel poster illustration. We'll create a flat style illustration and explore the digital textures on Photoshop. You will need basic knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. At the end of the course, and we'll have a basic idea of how to illustrate a travel poster from the beginning and how to capture the best of a city. Go outside and be inspired and let's start creating. 2. Study the City: Welcome to Antigua, Guatemala. Antibodies as a colonial city founded in 1542, surrounded by volcanoes and ancient buildings. It is a perfect combination of history and colors. Located in the south of Guatemala. It is known as the best preserved Spanish colonial city in Central America. Stroll the cobblestone streets relaxed with the locals in Central Park on Sunday afternoons were climb one of the volcanoes overlooking the city for incredible views. We will illustrate all of that in our amazing travel poster. Our first stop is that L tang k du Val union. During colonial times in Antigua, Guatemala, not all the houses had a place to wash clothes. So some of the inhabitants resorted to public laundry rooms, which were also considered social meeting points to talk about everyday things. But first, I will show you a technique that I use to capture a good image. We will need a small photo frame or just a hard paper frame. It actually helps to figure out what is worth keeping in the frame and captures a nice angle of images. The next step is to find a good angle to Shange our composition. When we have founded, we place our frame and take a photo with our mobile phone. Now we can see that we have captured a good perspective. And this will help us to have a better balance in our design. Here we can see how before the ladies placing their clothes over here while they talked in, commented about everyday life or the gossip of the day. You could say that this place was like an old social media. Now is the time to start building our color palette to keep the history of this place alive, the National Council for the protection of Antigua, Guatemala standardize the use of 10 colors in order to preserve the colonial color topology. It can be seen on the street that this color called red Concepcion is very popular. So we will use it as a reference for our illustration. The next stop is the popular arco to Santa Catarina. This monumental arch was built as a passage way between the monastery and adjoining school. The buildings were constructed to accommodate an increase in religious followers during the 17th century. Standing above the cobbled streets and in front of the whole thing, Volk on to Agua, this saffron yellow arch has become the symbol of anti-gay in the central image on most postcards. Here, we have an overview where the arches located. And we have the perfect shape in the background of the volcano dog with, as you can see, we also have a general perspective of the street and the arch in the center. So as we did before, we adjust our frame and we catch up the magic of the place with our cell phone. Now we are heading up to l Cerro, the la Cruz elevated spot with the 1930s crossings we can use, including an amazing view of work on the auger. We apply again the frame technique so we can have a landscape view of the city with the different images and colors that we have captured of a city, we can begin to create our travel poster. See you in the next chapter. 3. Illustration Time : Hello, welcome back. After having captured amazing images of the beautiful city of Antigua, Guatemala, we are ready to start creating our travel poster. As a first step, we select the images that we take during our trip. In this occasion, I will select the image of the arch of Santa Clara arena. We place the image in the center of our page. We make a square to make a mask. We stretch the image to the same size as our artboard. To have a better reference of the space, we can add our title. In this case, we write Guatemala for the moment, we will leave it like that. When we export it to Photoshop, we will look for a nice font. The third step is to subtract our color palette. For that, we select the eye dropper tool. If you remember in the previous video, I have showed you that n TDA has 10 official colors. And one of them is this nice red ass. And Joan, we will take this and put it on our palate. We also extract this beautiful color is called geocoding NGO yellow, colonial Celeste, and pensive yellow. We will start by drawing the rectangle. To begin to illustrate the shape of the arch. We will put the opacity down to have a better view of the image behind. We select the circle tool. We place it on our rectangle so that we can create a nice arc. Then we place another rectangle. We do Control G to group them all, and select pathfinder tool to cut the rectangle. Now we have a perfect arch. Then we continue drawing the dome of the arch. We again use a rectangle and a circle to create it. At the moment, we will only use flat colors without any degradation or texture. Because later we will play with colors to make contrasts and create shadows. Now, we have the body of the arch already finished. We begin to create the details of the arch. As before, we will use the rectangle tool to draw them. We will use white and a light blue to create a small shadow. It is not necessary to make it so perfect. I do it this way, which is the style I have. But you can do it in your own style. Later, I will teach you how to add textures and shadows in Photoshop. I'm going to forward the video a bit to make it less boring. We have our arch ready. We will begin to illustrate the rest of the street using the official colors of Antigua, Guatemala. For that, we use the pen tool and start creating the wall. We selected the pencil TiVo yellow color. We draw from the perspective of the wall, this wall later we will add texture to give a depth angle to our illustration. We put the opacity down to start creating the details that the wall has. We add a contrasting color to create the cornice. When we have the first line of the corn is ready, we can copy and paste to make the process faster and easier. We add the details of the column on the wall. We will choose a contrasting color to create the shadow. It will also help us to create the shadow of the windows. Now we can see that we made the windows and the walls details only with contrasting colors. It is a very effective way to give a unique touch to our illustration. We have this one already. Then we will put texture in Photoshop. For the other wall, we use the same technique of using contrasting colors to create the windows and doors of the buildings. This will take a few minutes to do. So. I will fast-forward the video a bit. We have almost completed the first part of our illustration. Now, we have to illustrate the magnificent volcano in the background and also the blue sky. We can see these beautiful clouds that come out behind the volcano. We will illustrate them with the pen tool. We make some curved shapes and a white gradient to 0 opacity. We have already finished our design in Illustrator. Now it's time to export are designed to Photoshop where we will give texture and find a nice font for our travel poster. See you in the next video. 4. Photoshop texture: Welcome back. We are in Photoshop ready to add texture to our illustration. The first step is to select the magic wand tool. We select the yellow color of the arch. Then we select Brush tool. We are looking for a texture that has a spray, or you can find the one you like the most. The idea is to give depth to our illustration. Try to apply the texture in a way where the shadow of the building is, as you should for any new layer created in Photoshop, renamed the texture layer. This step is helpful so you can keep track of your layers and make the necessary adjustments to the correct one. For a more dramatic look that works well on posters and wall art. You can add grain texture. In this case, Antigua, Guatemala is very old. Therefore, the buildings are very rustic and with a lot of texture and cracks in the walls. As we can see, the use of texture gives us that effect of light and volume in each element. We began to give the volcano a light effect. We add white grain texture in the part where the natural sunlight comes from. At the same time enter the dark texture to create a shadow on the other side of the volcano. For create the cobblestone streets of anti-gay. We select the ground and we add a grain texture to make the illusion of stones. First we add a white texture, and then in the top of dark texture, with some texture that has a long shape, we can draw lines that will give us don't affect. After finishing adding the texture, we are ready to add the title of our travel poster. In this case, we add the country and then the city. We are looking for a font that we like.
