How to Create a Nashville Effect in Photoshop

1. Introduction: have you ever wanted to create an awesome instagram filter such as the Nashville Effect in photo Shop? My name is Jeremy Deegan. And thank you for checking out the skill share class in this class. I'm going to teach you how to recreate an awesome instagram filter called the Nashville Effect inside a photo shop. Now, if you're a beginner user, we do move a little quickly, so some prior knowledge of photo shop will help you out here. However, I do explain in detail the processes, techniques and steps that you need to take to recreate this effect. Now, we will talk about different things such as adjustment layers. And whenever we're done, I'm going to show you a very easy way to take this effect and apply to any image that you would like to. I really think you're gonna find that this class is going to help you see different ways that you can edit your photos and create all kinds of different cool looking filters and effects. Now, at the end of this class, I really encourage you to upload your image to the course so that I can actually see what you're working on. It's very inspiring for other students to check that out also. So if you're ready to get started, go ahead and click on the enroll button now and we'll begin. 2. How to Create a Nashville Effect in Photoshop: If you're ready to create the Nashville effect in photo shop, open up your image now and we will begin. You can use just about any type of photo for this effect, but I find that it works really well with pictures of people. I am going to be using three different images in this video. They're labeled woman and car dot JP G woman on bike dot jp e g and woman on mountains dot jp e g. I will show you how to create this effect on one of these images. And then I will show you how to transfer that effect to any other image that you want renamed the background layer to original by double clicking on it and hit OK, This will be the unedited version of our image so that you can use it later on if you need to and convened the changes you make as you progress. Now, right, Click on the original layer and select duplicate layer. Call this layer woman and hit OK, this will be the layer that you will work with. We don't need to see the original layer so you can hide it by clicking on the eyeball in the layers panel. In this video, we will be using a combination of adjustment layers to our image. Using adjustment layers allows you to edit the image without changing the original information. This is great because it means that you can change the adjustments at any time. It doesn't destroy the original image, and if you don't like the adjustment, you can delete it and start over. The first adjustment layer that you will use is the curves adjustment layer. Click on the new adjustment layer button in the layers panel and select curves. The horizontal axis of this graph represents the input tonal range from 0 to 255. The darker values and shadows are represented on the left hand side, while the brighter values and highlights are represented on the right hand side. Each output value represents the vertical access of this curve, which is what you want. The value to be darker or brighter. You can edit these points by left clicking and driving them around. If you want to make the darkest areas of this image brighter, you can click the bottom point on the left hand side of the graph and move it up as I do, you will notice that not only am I making the darkest areas brighter, but it's affecting every other value along this curve, also making everything a little brighter when I move the point to the very top left that is basically saying that every value from 0 to 255 should be set at the maximum bright value of 255. Move this point back down to the bottom left and then move it to the right. This will make more of the values and output of zero or black new the top right point down . To make more of the higher values darker and move it to the left toe, add more values to the output of 255 or white. Multiple points can be added anywhere on this curve to affect the tonal ranges from 0 to 255 making them darker or brighter. You can also do the same with individual colors and the different color channels of red, green and blue. Let's go ahead and take a look at that now change RGB and the drop down box to blue When you click on the point and the bottom left of the curve and move it up, you are adding more blue to the darker parts of the image. Move the point to the bottom and now to the right, this will make more of the values. Have a blue output of zero. When you take away blue, you are left with yellow. Click on the top right point and move it down to give the highlights less blue, leaving yellow behind and move it to the top left to make. More of the highlights have a higher blue value. With this effect, we want to greatly increase the blue and slightly increase the green values in the darker areas. Select the point on the very bottom left of the curve and move it up to around 160 or so. This is giving more of our darker colors a blue tone and also adding that same blue tone to the rest of the image evenly. Now select the green value, move the same bottom right point up to around 40 or so. As you do, you can see that this gives the image a more process. Look when we overlay a warmer color later on, it will really give this effect the look that we want. We also need to brighten this up, change green back to RGB now, select the darker input values and make them lighter by moving them up. Make more values, have a brighter value. By selecting the top right point and moving it to the left, you will need to adjust the brightness and contrast separately. So let's go ahead and add a new adjustment layer, brightness and contrast. Now you could use the curves adjustment layer with an S shaped curve in the graph to do the same as this brightness and contrast adjustment layer. But this will just make the process a little faster bump of the brightness to make the whole image a little brighter. Also, bump up the contrast to bring out some of those colors. Now we're going to adjust the blue and green values again. But with this as our starting image, select the new adjustment layer button and select curves. You may notice that the hissed a gram looks different. There are also these stronger peaks and values from the changes that we've made already select the blue value, and you'll notice that there isn't as many dark areas in this image anymore. Based on how the new history Graham looks for this blue value, grab the bottom left point and move it to the right so that we get read of some of the blue , bringing more yellow back into the image. Also, do this with the Green Channel, which will bring back more magenta. You will see that the image is really starting to take on a cool retro or vintage look. Now add another brightness and contrast adjustment layer. Only this time bring the brightness down to make the image a little darker but still bring up a little more contrast. Just don't overdo it here. Now, This next step is what is really going to give us that Nashville effect that we're going for. Select the new adjustment layer button and select solid color. This will place a flat, solid color that we will overlay onto our image, giving all of the image a little bit of the color we choose. Go ahead and pick a tan color and when you're ready, hit. Okay. Now change the blend mode for this layer to multiply. This will multiply this color into every RGB value in this image, giving it that creamy Nashville look. Finally, we can boost the highlights and dark in the shadows across the whole image by selecting a new adjustment layer and picking Grady Int Matt, select the great in and make sure that black to white is selected. This creates a gray scale of our image and will be used to adjust our highlights and shadows. Change the blending mode too soft flight, which will softly lighten the image. But we'll give it more contrast based on the great it meant that we used turn down the A pass ity low so that it doesn't look too harsh. Now the natural effect is complete, and the best part is that since you used adjustment layers, you can go back at any time in the just any of the parameters that you want. These adjustment layers will affect any layer that is beneath them, so you can easily add another image below these adjustment layers and see the Nashville effect on it. Open another image in photo shop. I'm going to select woman on bike dot jp e g. Left click on the background layer and drag it onto the other image that we were working on . Now move that layer to the bottom and hide the woman layer. You can see that these adjustment layers will now update to the image that we just added while holding shift left, click and select all of the adjustment layers while holding control. Press the letter G on your keyboard to group them together. You can double click the name and rename this to Nashville Effect. Click on the eyeball next to this group in the Layers panel to see the effect it has on the image again. Since we're working with adjustment layers, you can drag this group folder into any other image. To see the effect take place, click on the Nashville Effect Group and drag it into another image. Open and Photoshopped. I will use woman on mountain dot jp e g. You can create a PSD file of just groups of different effects and click and drag those group folders into any image, easily giving you a bunch of different effects that are easy to apply. 3.
