How To Make a Pattern Repeat Tile With the iPad and Procreate

1. Class Introduction: Hi, I'm Catherine and my surface button designer and online teacher. And I'm based in Sicily, Italy. You might know that I have a class that explains how to create a repeat pattern tile entirely by hand. And I use in that class little pieces of paper like this, little squares. Then you will get at the end something like this. Say you use pencil and paper. And I do love to use this method, but I know that many people like to do digitally. So that is why I have created this class where I will explain the same method. So you will have little squares. You will turn them around. You will do everything as if he was the analogue method, but it will be done directly in your iPad and with a procreate. The best parts about this process is that you can draw your motifs which shading and with all sorts of embellishments. And you can just transfer it on POD websites without going back and forth from your iPad to your computer. At the end of the class, you will learn a new skill and a new way to make your repeat pattern tile. And that it can be uploaded directly on websites such as spoon flour and society seeks, and I will actually show you how to upload their own societies six. And of course, you will have another pattern for your performance. So what does this class is for you if you love to do digitally? And is it an intermediate class? So you would need some knowledge of pattern-making. And of course, if the app procreate, because I will give you a brief introduction, but I won't go into detail about the actual up in how to use it. So are you ready to learn a new skill? Well, let's guess that for them. 2. Class Project: The project for this class is for you to create a button using the Brooklyn and the technique I showed you in the class. So I will keep an eye on it, I promise, and I will answer your questions. 3. Class Materials: For this class, you will need an iPad and a stylus. And I used the Apple pencil because I like that is pressure sensitive. But you don't have to use that. You can use any stylus you prefer. You may also want to look at some images for inspiration. And I do have a listen about inspiration in my other class on how to make a pattern repeat tile by hand. And I will put a link here if you'd like to have a look. And I will show you different books and sources of inspiration. And the lesson is called inspiration. Surprise, surprise. Ok, so it's time to get the iPad out and let's get started. 4. Quick Introduction to Procreate: Hey guys, before we dive in into the lesson on how to make the button detail, I just wanted to give you a brief introduction to procreate is going to be very brief, no worry. So and if you are confident in using procreate, just feel free to skip this particular lesson. Um, so you can see here that I already started with my motifs for this lesson. Because basically I didn't want to bore you and use some time to actually draw these motifs. So I'm assuming that you know how to draw these. And you would do your own motifs and then we will start. Norwood died just writing without wasting any time. And if you want to create a new canvas, of course, it's a plus sign over here. And then if you don't have, I have quite a few different sizes that I have kept here. If you don't have a particular size already, that you would like to use, just click on the plus sign here again. And then you can choose if you want millimeters, centimeters, inches, I usually leave it a pixel, and I'm normally go for 3 thousand by 3 thousand and leave it at 300 DPI. And I'd already touched anything else. And here it will tell you how many layers you can have with this sides. And if you increase the sides, you would decrease the layers. But this is to do also we do system that you're using your iPad memory. Full it is I think it changes according to different things as well. And then you do create. So you have, you, you come Thus. And I use very often a technical pen to draw my motifs. Of course, you can use whatever venue like it's your pattern. So feel free to experiment, USE whatever you wish. But if you want to change the settings of your particular branch that you want to use, you can't do that, but I would advise you to make a Coby first, so slide it to the and duplicate. And then you can rename this as well. And then you can change a lot of things like the stroke, the taper, shaped the grain. So you can do all sorts of things. Apple Pencil dynamics. So it's, it's quite a nice thing to know how to do and to play with as well. And then you can see here the difference when you change some of these settings here. The streamline is quite good to know how to change, because this way it would change the way you line forms. So the maximum is like this. And then the minimum is like this. So you see that difference of the flow of the ink, basically of the digital ink. So I usually keep it something like in the middle by it depends on what you want to do. Or, kay? So thus then, and I'm going to delete this because I don't need it. So slight it and then delete if you need a brush. And I think that so for the moment, I will show you all the things as we go. Probably one more thing useful to know is the during guide. But I will show you that again later. So you just edit during night. And then when it appears like this, well, you click on the island and you edit. And then you can change the sides of your touring guide. So if you slide it all the way to the right, you will have these four squares, which will be very useful for us. Or depending where you do, you can have little tiny squares, biggest squares. And that's pay can be different. You can use it for different uses. And you can change the color as well of you during guide. So depending on your background, for example, you can change that o k. So I think we're ready to move on to the next lesson where we're going to start building our patentable Yay. 5. Make the Pattern Tile Part 1: Hey guys, welcome to this lesson. So here we're going to start building our pattern tile. So this document here is 3 thousand by 3 thousand pixels. And I have put here my motifs. And if you have watched my previous class on how to build a patent by hand, you probably recognize these because they are the same motifs. But for the sake of this demonstration, I'm just going to use the same and fully pattern type by hand. I use squares, little paper squares, six inches by six inches. And then at the end, you have somebody like this. Let me see if I can show you. So you can see that the secret squares, they are kept together by tape. I have recycled This, as you can see. And what you can do is basically you start drawing and then you move the paper. So you move the squares. They are labeled top right, top left, bottom right, and bottom left them, if you can see that. And what you do is you and take them and then you turn them underneath the degrees and you keep drawing. So you end up with a tile that is like this. There is a basically a repeat style already. So whatever is at the bottom here, repeats on this side, so continuous on this side. And you can see that this attitude here continues on this side here. So we're going to do this, but with the iPad. So if you love to do digitally this, especially for you. So I have my tires there, sorry, my motifs here. And what we need to do now is to go to the little orange there and go to the touring guide and then edit the touring guide. So at the moment I see I have it set as in as I need it. But sometimes it appears something like this. So something like this. It depends how you have used it before. Going to make it a bit dark. You can see. So you just need to pull it all the way to the right and then say, done. So we now have four squares. So what we need to do is to label these squares top right, top left. And so we're going to put a little bit here. Left, bottom, right. Bottom left. Oh, okay. So now we need to obtain the same sort of thing that we had with the papers cleaners. And to do that, what I'm going to do first thing first, my motifs are all in one layer. So if you have your motifs in different layers, you will need to manage them and to match your motifs. And so let's see. Another layer there and something else here. You need to pinch them altogether. Or you can just simply melts down and it will match it up. You just have to repeat that a few times. We don't need that. Okay? So we have this. Usually what I do is I actually duplicate this once. And then I will actually list duplicated five to achieve five layers. And I always duplicate the original layer because otherwise it will start losing in sort of definition as well. So we have 45, but the fifth layer, I will make it invisible and I will look it. And this is a sort of backup. So if anything happens that we don't really like, then we can always go back to the original a layer. And then for these ones, I'm going to turn them off and then on one by one. And I will oh, one more thing that we need to do before doing anything else. As you can see what a selected using the arrow, it doesn't actually go all the way to the corners because it only selects where there is something to select. So selects whether is the TR here. So what we need to do before selecting is C some, something that is just the mock, the corners. And you really should have, what? I really should have done this before making the copies. We can always find that no matter how much I use this, I always find that I always forget to do something and then I need to go back. So let's delete these. He's actually much quicker to duplicate again these ones. Okay? I think now we are ready. So select it. And what I do is I will, let's say we want this square that top-right. I will drag this, this coordinate here. So we have only this little bit. Okay, so, but what we need to do is to zoom in, sorry, my hands are a bit in an awkward position, but it's just the female angle. And if you hold down the arrow key, you can make it bigger while it's still selected. And as you can see, is actually quite off the center. So if we move it, try to make it exactly on the lines. Okay, so it looks like it's perfectly on the line. And what we need to do is to bring you back to the top right. But again, if you see here is an oscillating everything. So just make sure that this corner is see, it's highlighted o whatever that AIG. And now we can move it back because this is the entire square. And again, we need to zoom in and make sure it aligns perfectly. Alright, I think its okay. So that's one then. And we can do the next one. So we can do the top left. So we'd go here. And we can move this somewhere here. And then we just zoom in. We weigh in. Alright? And then again, we need to mark this corner so that it will select everything. And we bring it to this side a little bit like that because otherwise it cuts off if there's anything, I mean, there's nothing here but it might cut off something if it's in there. And we put it in its right place. Okay. And we can check here. This is in one tile and that's in the other one. And it's perfectly forming the lift there. Alright, so I'm going to do the same with the two. And I spit it up a little bit so you won't get too bored. But that's basically where you have to do. You have to be very careful to align these squares properly. Don't forget to mark them like I usually do. And then we can keep keep going with the title. All right, so we are our photos now, they'll separate, but the design, the motifs are continuous here, as you can see. And this is important because this will reproduce what we did. So it's like having some different squares with different motifs are drug. Okay? So I think I will show you the next step in the next lesson. 6. Make the Pattern Tile Part 2: Hey guys, welcome back. So in this lesson we're going to rotate our squares so that we can keep building the patent tile. And we need to select them one by one. And then I rotated until is underneath the degrees rotated. So you will have your little labels in the center here. So let's start doing them one by one. This one. And that 10 k. So there are rotated now. And what I normally do at this point is I actually manage them all down again. So I again have just one layer. Alright? So we're done. There is always a bit scary when you do that. Okay? And what we need to do now is we can see there's a blank space here in the center. We need to feel this. So at this point you can draw new motifs or you can just copy. Some of you are motifs that you have already. So for example, let's see, I could select this with the selection, freehand selection. Just make sure it's free hand. And then if you click on the arrow is selected and then just weigh three fingers. Copy. Copy paste. Yes. Probably just works. Swiping again doing paste, but it's faster. Copy-paste. Now we can move this, we can rotate it. We can flip it horizontally, vertically, and we can put it somewhere. Here, for example. Let's see. I always try not to put too many complicated things on the lines. Even this is true when you do it by hand. And I tried to do it even digitally as well, because it's easier to match things that are not too complicated. Rather than trying to match something that is like a complicated for our center or maybe this little tiny leaves and so on. I'm hoping this makes sense. But it's a tried to not to put too many complicated during zone on the lines here. And if you don't have enough motifs because these been sort of cutoff, you can always go back to maybe she made a duplicate of your original. Or you can this one, for example, we can match it down. You can go back to your original design, unlock it, and then you can copy something from here. Let's say this one, copy paste. And then we can put this somewhere in here. So maybe that, I mean, maybe that's a bit too many lines to put in the middle so I can put it somewhere here. Okay, so this is what I normally do. I fill this in all the blank spaces and then we repeat the previous step again. So I will split this up and I will see you when this is all completed. They had the filling of the blank spaces. All right, so I think we have enough motifs for now. And the next step would be to ten. So make the Foursquare's again because at the moment we have just one layer. We're going to make the Foursquare's again like we did before. And then we're going to turn these squares again. Ok, do that in the next lesson. 7. Make the Pattern Tile Part 3: Hey guys, welcome back. So now we're going to make the full squares again. So I've showed you this before, so I probably will just spit this out so you won't get too bored. But basically, it's again, the same principle. You have to make sure that you have little corners here marked. So they're all marked. Maybe this one is something that okay. And just notice some little things when you move this around. Sometimes it doesn't move, just mix them OK. OK. So this is something for you to check. Once you have finished your tire and you need to be sure that there's nothing there that they should emit. Alright, so let's make a game for duplicates. And if you want at this point, you can do what we did before. So duplicate this and then lock it, and then hide it. So you have another step here that is one step forward that you have saved. So you happy until now, save this, and then you can play with delta one, delta duplicates as you wish. And if something goes terribly wrong, you can go back to the previous one. Or you can even make a new document if you like, you go to the gallery and you swipe to the left and you duplicate it. So you will have separate document where you have different steps. Okay, so let's duplicate this four times again. 1234, okay? And again, I will start working with them one by one. So I'm making the other ones invisible. And then work with each one separately. You can keep them visible and you want to do that. You should put like a white background underneath each of these. But I think it's adding steps they, you really don't need is much simpler to make them visible and invisible as you go. But you free to work the way you like best. Ok, so let's do this. So I'm going to start with the bottom left. And if you don't want to keep hold of the arrow key, you can always unselected, make it very big, and then take it again. And sometimes it's much easier because if you don't hold it properly, then it won't. It won't work and it will do weird things. Ok, So good to speed this up. Alright, so we are all despairs again. And it might seem a bit like going back, control it and doing the same thing quite alerts. It's important to do your repeat tire, basically this. So and then once you do, the beauty of this process is that once you have this tile done, you don't need to do anything else because if you're doing it with procreate, I didn't really do any like shading or I don't know, embellishing of my motifs. But you can do a lot of things. You can add texture, you can do all sorts of embellishing you, of your motifs. And then once it's done, it's done. You don't need to do anything else. The tire will be ready. So now we need to rotate back these. So we start with the first one and do all of them. Rotate until you label here is back in its place. Oops. This one. Okay, so you back with the original disposition of your tile. And what we need to do now is, well, first of all, check that you are happy with your tile, for example, here I can see that I could put and another motif to fill in this blank space. But if you want, now we can check the tire. So and what I do is I will get rid of of course, I need to manage them again. So it's this for a go. And it can get rid of these labels and these as well. And as you can see, they match really well. Using this method, of course, you have to be very careful when you are actually doing the Foursquare's, you have to make sure that is exactly on the square, the matching exactly when the square, because otherwise. Just zoomed them in as much as you can because otherwise they will match this well. Okay, so it just a little bit of precision, but it will pay off. So we have our tile. And what we need to do now is to check the patent. So to do that, I usually make, again for duplicates. All right. And then I will make them smaller. So in this case they will snap to the corners. And this one and that was much easier, wasn't it? This way, you can check your repeat and then you can have a look at your pattern and see maybe here there is a space that you can feel. Maybe something can move. We move to just be careful when you move things on top of the lines. You have to make sure that they match. So I think I would just put something here and something here and the pattern will be done. So now what you might do is to add, for example, a, a background. So this one. So you can add different colored background. You can play around and see what you like. Actually, I would add it to your original square. So one thing that I didn't do Wesley was to make a copy again of of you. I0. So make sure you make a copy of that will go back. Ok, so these are the four duplicates that we did. We make the one and again, leave it like this. And then once you happy with your pattern, you can, for example, choose a background color and play with a current i you like. And let's see. This one's already many colors. So the one to do something back. And then that's it. That's your patent. Either you can upload on PLD websites and you can use for all sorts of different things. If you want to upload it on POD websites, you will have to save a copy of this as a PDF on your iPad. Or you can save it on Dropbox and then uploaded on the PLD sides from there. And I can add an extra lesson for you to show you how to do that. So if you've never done it before, like from your iPad, I can just show you how to do it as well. And we are done with our patent tile. I hoped you enjoyed doing it. And I can't wait to see your patents that you created this way. 8. Upload the Pattern on Society6: Hey guys. So I promised you I would show you how to upload this on website like, for example, Society six. So first of all, of course, you need to have an account with society six. But that's quite simple. Just go on the website and it's really, really simple to open. And then you will need to save this. Now, I'm going to actually get this. Basically I add problem in the past, trying to upload from the camera roll on the iPad, on society S6. And so what I do is I say this on the cloud so you can use Drive, you can use Dropbox. So I'm gonna use Drive because I found it quite easy. So what do you want to do is to save this share. So if you have something that you don't want a background to it, you can remove the background. Yeah. And then you when you go to save it, you save it as a PNG. So it won't give you the background because you might actually, instead of a pattern, you might have a, an illustration that you want to put on a T-shirt. And it's not good to have a, a colored background because you would have the square on the t-shirt. So, but in this case, I will leave the background and save it as a jpeg. And I will choose from here, the dr. And which is this. So you should name your artwork in a way that allows you to keep track of it and there's no confusion. So for this one I'm just going to call it. I actually saved one of these already, but I will call it Skill Share button. Okay? And then you choose where you want to put it. And I have a folder here named Society six. And I can save it here. And you can do upload. And it would take different amount of time depending how big your and tireless, how big your file is. So this one is already done. Now, I had already that folder there. If you don't have a folder, if you go to your drive, or in this case is the drive. But whatever it is that you want to save it, you can. So this is the main page. As you can see, I already have Society six folder, but you can create the folder before you export your file and you just go into class folder and you name your folder. And you can name it society's six, You can emit. For society six uploads like AB here, another one for example. So save your file. Dr. This is all done. And then once it's all done, you need to go to your society six page account and you go into cell, which is the up here, and you add new artwork. This is kind of new. You can enter the title of your toward here, but to upload it, so you don't have it in your photo library. You have to browse. And it will show you your work. So I have already SKS share button here. So I can click it and you will start to upload it. And then here you can rename it. Let's see. And do like a wild, wild flowers may DO have something, anything at the moment. And then we can continue. And you have to check this. Does it contained mature content or in this case no. It's just flowers. So we save and continue. And it will basically show you where you are to work will fit. So if you start creating your work with the intention of uploading its own society six, you could actually make it bigger because if you start with a 6,500 by 6,500 tile, then you're at work will fit most of the products. As you can see here, this was 3 thousand by 3 thousand. And it doesn't actually fit quite a lot of these. But it will show you where you can actually upload your design. This is uploading it on prince wishes, not ideal for repeated button. And you would need, for example, here you have coasters, you have a cutting board. So you would need a bigger pattern, a bigger file if you want to upload it on things like, I don't know, cushions and things that have shower curtains. For example, we can see here is quite a pretty little cart. And when you finish and you're happy with everything, you have to put here, you have to choose the cutting, particularly. You have to put some tags are very important. The tags tried to put, in this case, I'll put something like wild flowers, flowers, botanical, no branches. All sorts of stuff related to nature, for example, oh, that leaves. And you put a description. He said your details and when everything is done, if you do the option to publish her at work. So because this is not really refined or ready, I'm not going to use it. So we'll delete it for now. But this is how you would upload your outward for symbol here. And the knife I can show you. This was a bigger artwork so it would fit in different things, but it's just, it takes times. So this is how you upload your work. On society 6N. You can do the same for red bubble for example. And other no, spoon flour. I haven't done it from the iPad. I can try it and see if it works. Because sometimes with film flower, you, if you upload from Adobe Illustrator for example, I would take the background color and the expanded a little bit because he might create white lines around you button when you uploaded. So with the iPad, I haven't tried it and I'm not sure if he works as as well as with a file from the illustrator program.
