About This Class

In this class you will learn how to design a modern tech logo in Illustrator.

In fact, you will learn how to design two different logos that represent two different logo design concepts:

  • The first one follows one of the latest logo design trends and we will take a look at the trend itself just to understand the idea behind the design a bit better.
  • The second one doesn’t succumb to the trends, but focuses on the company’s mission and values and tries to represent them visually.

Both of these logos are projects for a real life client so the whole class is a design scenario teaching you a real life approach to a logo design challenge.

But it is not just about the design: it’s also about resolving design challenges using helpful and easy to learn Illustrator tools and techniques.

And if you’ve seen my other classes you can be sure that this one will also be straight to the point without any second of your time wasted.

1. 1What is this all about: in this class, you will learn how to design a modern tech logo in Illustrator. In fact, you'll learn how to design two different logos that represent two different logo design concepts. The 1st 1 follows one of the latest logo design trends, and we will take a look at the trend itself just to understand the idea behind the design a bit better. The 2nd 1 doesn't succumb to the trends but focuses on the company's mission, and values and trust represent them visually. Both of these logos are projects for a real life clients. So the whole class is a design scenario, teaching you a really life approach to a logo design challenge. But it is just about the design. It's also about results and design challenges using helpful and easy to learn illustrator tools and techniques. And if you've seen my other classes, you can be sure that this one will also be straight to the point without any second of your time wasted. So if you want to learn how to design a modern local for a tech company, just keep watching 2. 2.Explore the design: in this class, you will learn how to design two versions of a modern logo for a tech company. The local that you are looking at right now was ultimately chosen by the client, but my choice was the second logo we are going to design in this class. By the way, this is the first thing you might want to remember from this class. The logo you like best is quite often going to be disliked by the client. Luckily, I also happen to like the version that the client ultimately chose. So let's focus on that one right now. And the company's called Soul Tech Business is safety installations they put into buildings . That is why their logo has to convey trust and stability. But since the tech company and modern touch would be an added bones, as you can see, there are a few things about this logo that make it what it is. First of all, the main symbol is a combination off three things. That letter s a fingerprint, and it also looks a bit like a yin yang symbol, which, by the way, is one of the latest local design trends. Finding the right font was a bit of a difficult process, but ultimately we went for a rounded type. We used a Grady Int field to give the symbol a mother look, but we kept its subtle and 24 shades of blue as this color represents stability and trustworthiness. And it doesn't hurt that it looks nice. Our first order of business will be to create the main symbol, and two, just like in the case off all my classes. And, of course, is the journey will begin from any simple shape an ellipse. 3. 3.Create the main symbol: Let's start with creating a new document. I'm going to name it as tech. Local design all choose 9 60 by 5 60 size preset. But the document size at this point doesn't really matter. Anything that is going to allow you toe work comparably will be fine. I'll just hit OK, and we can start working as a management before the shape will start with is going to be an L Libs, but not just a simple Ellerbe's. It will be a multiplied ellipse. I will drop the polar grid stool from the Tools panel and just click on the art awards to get to the tools options. If you're not familiar with how this deal works, I'd highly encourage you to take a look at my every illustrator explained course. From what you can learn all of illustrator's tools, including the polar grid. So the values I want to go with is an equal with and height, of course. So I'll go with something around 300 pixels. I want to have five concentric dividers, which will be the rings, and I don't need any radial dividers. As soon as they hated the okay button, the grit will be created for me. I'll make sure that the stroke, he said to plain black, and that it is somewhat think, to create the letter s. I will ultimately need two sets of half circles that I will move to opposite sides. The easiest way to do this is to grab the middle ankle points with the direct selection tool and simply press this scissors icon in the control panel. This technique is splitting in the paths on the selected ankle points. So now after I on a group, the shape I can remove the bottom sets off paths, there are two ways of creating the gaps within the paths, so they actually look like a fingerprint. I'll copy this symbol to decide and start creating the gaps. Using the first technique from the Tools panel, I will grab the eraser tool and make its Diana are quite big by president holding the right bracket key. No, I will select the path where I want to add the gap and simply click. I wouldn't worry if the gap a Luke Sabe it's too wide at this point in the stroke panel. Let's change the cap to round. And just like that the gap looks smaller. As for the amount of gaps inside each path, there is really no right number here. Anything that looks good for you and is not too much at the same time will be fine. The second way is a bit more tedious to work with, but it gives you more control over the look of the gaps, select the line and, in the stroke penalty, choose dashed line. Now it is just a matter of typing in the value for the dash and gap. Just remember that the gap value should be the same for each line. You decide to put the gap on. Also notice that the size of the first dash makes the gap move around in the path. This technique is more for those of you who want to experiment a bit with the final effect . - If you're happy with the fingerprint, it's time to make it a letter s and a yin yang symbol. At the same time, grab the symbol, press the O on the keyboard and all to click on the bottom anchor point in their reflect dialog box that pops up. Choose horizontal and press copy. Now you can move the bottom part to the left, so you have paths on the left and paths on the right. If it's too difficult to align, the paths turn on the outline mode. Once the paths are aligned, you can now rotate it the whole symbol by 30 degrees. So just grab the paths, press the letter R and then enter type in 30 and click OK, so once we're happy with the final effect, you can start adding colors, so let's do that next. 4. 4Add the colors: I want to make sure that the colors are added to the film, not to the stroke. I want to avoid any ugly surprises along the way. I'll just go to the object menu and choose expand they only need to do here is to hit. Okay, now I will unite all the shapes together. Oh, select everything. And from the Pathfinder panel, I will choose Unite. If you don't have the Pathfinder panel up, you can activate it from the window menu from the great in panel. I'll choose the first grade in Swatch to add it to the symbol. Then, from the swatches panel, I will choose the blue swatches I have set up for this design and enter minus 45 degrees for the Grady Int angle. We're using a grating for this level because we want to make it modern and whether we like it or not, Grady INTs are back. But luckily in their more subtle form, however, you can play around with the colors used to create the Grady int. Let's glowing the symbol just a couple of times, which is the 2nd 1 and head over to the Recall er artwork to I'll hit the added step and make sure that that the link Harmony colors is selected. Now we can move the color handles around to see if maybe some other color combination looks better. In this scenario, I think that the yellowish combination looks nice, so I will just hit. Okay, I will repeat the process with the last symbol, but this time I will experiment with the red or purple colors that will give the symbol a somewhat instagram look. So now I have three different color schemes to choose from. I like it to experiment with these color scheme so you can get a good taste of the modern grading. Click and I highly encourage you to share your projects with your color schemes. So once were set off the colors who want to go with it's time to enter the text. So let's do that next 5. 5Add the text: their front are used for. The text is called Syrah around medium, and it is a paid fund. A decent free alternative is called Varela Around, and you can download it from the Google Funds repository. With the funds selected, I will click with the type tool and type in the name of the company. I will set the current into optical increase the tracking a bit and select all caps option . What I typically like to do when put in the text next to a symbol is elected. Create a rack tangle around the symbol, and then clone is to the side. A couple of times. This will simulate the golden ratio, although not exactly in 100%. And let me see what the phone size should be. Basically, I will try to fit the text into the two rectangles on the right. Now the last thing to do here is to convert the text in tow, outlines and align everything nicely. And there we go. Here's the first version off the local. We took a simple ellipse and multiplied it with the power grids to then we split the past with the scissor stool and added the gaps with the razor. We added the great in colors and finished the whole local with attacks using almost golden ratio. Next, we will create the second version of the logo, which she will be a bit more complicated. But it will give us a chance to discover fantastic illustrator techniques, so don't go away. 6. 6The second logo begins: before we start creating the second logo, let's take a quick look at how it is structured as you can see, this one also uses the fingerprints symbol, but it combines it toe they shield symbol. I thought that a combination like that would strengthen the message the logo is standing to recreate. The logo will use some techniques we use before, especially for the fingerprint part, but also some new ones, like the pencil and Pathfinder. Let's start with the fingerprint. The first steps won't be different than the ones taken to create the first logo. I'll just grab the polar grid tool, create the grid and then separate the bottom and top halves, using the scissors toe found in the control pal. And this is where similarities end. Now what we have to do is to move the bottom, have two left, so we only have three continues lines, and when you're done, remove the inner half circles from the left. Now select all paths and grab the ellipse, too, preferably by pressing the L key on the keyboard, creating a lips starting from the center point of the left to ring and make it so big that it runs in line with the first half circle on the right that is not on a continuous path, then repeat the process, but this time make the second ellipsis so big that it's touches the outer ring on the right . Now, with both ellipses selected, press Ault plus Control plus B on your keyboard to create a bland. So when you're done, double click on the blend total and change the blend mode to specified steps. Increase the number of steps and watch the rings magically align. When you get all the rings created, head over to the object menu and choose bland. Expand now with the direct selection tool. Select the top part of the rings and it to lead them to the same with the left part off the rings. The last thing to do here is to create the gaps and for this effect, work properly. It's important not to add any gaps to the outer ring. So again, the process is just the same as in the case off the previous local. Select the symbol and make the cap grounded, then grabbed the razor tool and start creating gaps. If the gap is too small, or too big at just the razor size. Of course, you could also use the dashed line way if you prefer. - When you are done, you can expand all the paths so they no longer are stroked lines but filled paths. Now move this symbol to decide because it's time to create the shield. 7. 7It’s time to create the shield: now that their fingerprints symbol is done, it's time to created this shield. I'm going to use the panto for that. I'll activate it and create. Just wanna side of the shield by simple clicking and the dragon. When the left party's done, I will reflect it to the other side. The last thing to do here is to join both parts of the shield. The shield mighty needs some tweaking after it's created. It might require some height or worth of adjustment, and there is no right or wrong here. Tweak it till you like it. Now we have to put the shield on the fingerprint logo and make sure that to the shield aligns nicely with symbol. We also don't want it to be too big when everything is nicely aligned in the bath. Final panel. Choose divide and remove the unnecessary parts of the logo that are result off this transformation. The two took parts of the shield have to be united with the fingerprint parts that are sitting just beneath them, select them and unite them. It can also help you in cleaning the object up. Once you are done, you can select the whole shape and united in the Pathfinder pal. So at in colors to it will be much easier, just like with the local before added the grading filled to the symbol, and you can play around with the angle value, so the film looks a bit more dynamic. The last thing to do here would be to added the tax using the same font we used before, so let me just copied over. It might need some tweaking in terms of color or size, but it Manny will look the same. 8. 8In Conclusion: in this class, you learn how to design a modern tech logo. We designed two versions of it. The 1st 1 follows one of the latest local design trends, which is getting Yang kind of design, and we used a modern and Grady int as the Phil. The 2nd 1 doesn't come to the trends but focuses on the company's mission and values and tries to represent them visually. Every time will be able to combine those two logo ideas, which are making it modern and fresh without compromising what the company wants to convey through their logo, you'll create an outstanding professional trademark.
