1. Intro: Hi there. My name is Francesca, and I'm an Italian surface and textile designer with a great passion for sketching and whether cars rowing. In the last period, I've been a lot into sketching food and food related subjects, so I thought it would be nice to share what I've learned about it. Will you? Everyone has a Police once took a picture of a nice meal cooked by yourself or off offensive plate in restaurants. Put on social media or just remember it. I love food, and I think that it's a ute has a huge role in our lives and doing it. It's a nice way to celebrate it, but also to include ourselves in that memory. Our experience and emotion related to that food and sketching can hear a very funny way to do it. This is the first class of a six classes serious all about food sketching that is going to be released over the next six weeks. In this glass, I will show you how to create nice sketches off some ingredients and teaching the basic aspects. You need to remember when you want to sketch any kind of subject. We will move into understanding the features that characterize every ingredient and in the classes to follow. How to combine them to create a more complex food sketch as, say, I choose water color to paint my drawing so I will give you some tips and advice is on how to use them to get more realistic results from your drawings as last part of the series of classes. Now we teach you how to digitalize your drawings and turn them into an ice cover for your receipt notebook or with the same skills, you can print the layout as a picture to frame and doing in your kitchen or anything you want. So grab your brushes and be ready to get most water it with water colors. 2. Materials class 1: supplies for this class. I'm gonna use several shades off watercolor and specifically for this class. I'm gonna use cadmium yellow pill. You cadmium orange, you yellow ocher, scarlet, purple lake indeed. Go pains. Great. And Salman, the most of them are form. Winsor and Newton Kozma line their student greed line, but also someday learn Rooney Or and some my men and also a current national color. Too awkward that it's basically a past electric in watercolor before or after you put on paper. Off course, you can use whatever brand you prefer. This is just my own selection. I'm gonna also use a pencil and eraser pen and razor as a fun liar. I'm gonna use their 0.5 black Is your point to black and s dark sepia that it's from Faber Castell Peter, suspend set. You're going Also need some Russians. So I'm going to use a medium sites. Water brush is most sites with a brush and inside three synthetic brush. Other stuff. You're going to need our watercolor paper. And please take one that it's at least 300 grams per square meter. And EPA let a addition my case on a water container a k a message are and the paper thought would 3. How to sketch : Let's see how to start sketching. My keeps intrigues so you know that you want to draw something, but you don't know how to start. It happens all the time. The worry. When you want to sketch something food included, you can proceed in several ways by heart. You can draw something just referring to your memories off. The that subject I opens with one is something that I'm very familiar with, like one of my favorite food or every common objects, like a book or a candle leg drawing. If you have the chance, let drawing can be very funny and destructive. There is nothing more relaxing that see sitting on a bench and sketch the city life around you. When you are a home, you can grab any object you want to try to sketch and just start drawing looking at it. It's not always possible, though sometimes you don't have the time or the equipment with you, but we have other options using your own photos. Take a picture and use it as a reference. It's very helpful. You can take a picture while you are at the restaurant or on a trip, and then sketch it when you are home. By shooting yourself, you decide the angle, the elements in it. You can also take multiple shots from several angles to go deeper in the study of that object. Also remember that you will own the copyright of that image so you can use it for any purpose, even commercially from reference. Sometimes you just want to draw something that you haven't taken a photo off or something that it's difficult to find near you likely we have the Internet and we can find the Brazilian off photos of basically anything but. And it's a big but here we have to be careful with the picture we use as a reference. Every picture, even if on the Internet, has copyright owner and in order to avoid any issue, example, if you want to sell, your drawing is always better to look for the once that have a creative common license with no restriction. Also called CC zero, there are several websites like picks a bit dot com that offers free pictures with no copyright restriction, either for commercial use. I took almost all the ones are using this class from them, as you can see here on the right. There is the CC zero creative common with free for commercial use and no attribution required and the free download option. So, I mean, it's super simple to check if it's free and if you can use it without any kind of issue. If you want to use pictures with copyright a limitation, you should ask for licensing costs or at least the permission of the owner. The copyright alot. It's pretty intricate and different from for each country, so I won't go in more details here. But I strongly suggest you to be sure it can use the picture without consequences before you do. It's always better to be safe than sorry. I'm all right. And now that you have a reference, what's the next step is asking yourself a very funny question. What makes a stack look like a speck? Because there are several elements that I'm gonna call features that help in drawing something that is recognizable as the subject you intended to, even if you're just drawing a sketch. So let's identify the key features. Let's start saying that this is just how I like to think about my sketching. It's not a low set in stone. But for my experience, the commune Ishan off. These key features will do the trick, so the 1st 1 is shape. Many objects has a distinctive shape, so sometimes just by being accurate with this feature can be enough to convey realism to your sketch. The 2nd 1 is caller. I really like to color my sketch, even though you can obtain amusing sketch with Just Inc. Some subject, though, are easier to identify. If you call her them properly, for example, until you color them, a raspberry will probably look like a BlackBerry or aero shrimp. We look like a cooked one because sometimes is the color that makes a difference. Texture. With this feature intends cover. All those aspects there are related to the visual and tactile axe aspect of the surface. For example, the brilliant pattern on the SEC in the picture here or the mother of pearl effect inside them. A social de tastes are not accessory, but they could be a great way to add complexity to your sketch. Sometimes there are details that belong to an object, like adding the tail in the stream sketch. Sometimes details are not specific off the object, but our items or addition that you can relate to it. For example, in the drawing Steck class, you will see me adding potatoes, rosemary and garlic near my stack. Not because these are sex details per se, but because they are items that, in my memories are connected with the idea of a sec. And they will help me to what my own experience to my sketch, making it more interesting and expressive. There is no need to have all these key features represented in all the sketches, depending from the object. Even a couple of them could be more than enough to make a great sketch. In this class, we will meet more focused on shape and color rather than texture entities, because I want you to learn step by step, starting simple and adding complexity with the following classes so you won't feel overwhelmed. Now let's get started 4. Tortellini: how to draw and watercolor to tell you. It's so why totally? Because a I'm Italian and I love them be their known worldwide. And see it's the perfect example of a food that it's basically just recognizable by its shape. The same principles can be applied, for example, for Gaza or Fortune cookies. As I was saying before, tortellini have a specific shape with the pointy, almost triangular side and the wrong belly. So even just focusing on it, you can give the idea of this food color buster. It's pretty simple if you see it in terms of color, since it's basically pale yellow or yellow here, I've used to tone one yellow cadmium pill, you and the locker to make shadow areas more relevant and give depth to the sketch fixture . Texture wise, there is not much we can do to convey moralism to the sketch, since it's a pretty smooth and much surface these days. If you want to draw a single tortellini like I'm going to do here, the only kind of details that matters are about the shape, the more accurate, the more easier will be identified them to sketch a totally. I started by drawing with pencil, the belly making a bold oval shape. Then I at the triangular side on top. I'm also drawing the side with some curvy lines on the front. There are the laps off pastor that connects to close the tortellini. I like to have this junction simple by overlapping one above the other. Then I moved to draw the bellies detains to give the idea off the stuffing inside. Now let's move to tracing to trace the outlines. I'm using the dark safety. A fine line. Your sights s by Faber Castell over the pencil line. Take all the time you need to do the step because it will be more difficult to correct mistakes. Afterwards, there is the pencil lines before moving toe watercolor. As I mentioned before, I'm going to use some yellow cadmium, yellow pale, you and some yellow ocher. So with the small sites water brush, I apply the first layer of yellow trying to be not to. Even the second layer is with a light wash of yellow poker, and I applied Onley in the areas that I want to be darker. I go back with less water yellow walker and I insist in the areas where I need more shadows , like around the junction, at the bottom, near the top edge, off the belly and inside the belly as long as the water colored rise in become lighter. So I had extra color. When I feel it's needed. Don't overdo it at the beginning. It's not always easy to no one stops, but it's better to stop adding layers with a few hours. And let's go back to see if it's better to add some extra layers or not. I choose to have these tortellini with intense color shades, but if you prefer, you can just do it as lighter as you want going from. Basically white toe a light yellow. You don't need to use poker or strong corner if you don't feel too. And now that we have made our first food sketch, we can move to the next one a muscle 5. Mussel: it's time to try to use more colors by sketching a muscle. Let's see the features so shape the shell of the muscle as a pretty easy to drone and distinctive shape, almost like an upside down tear. The muscle meat is more like a novel with a pointy part on the bottom. As you can see by my tracing on the photo color, The shell is a really dark blue, almost black on the outside, while inside there are several colors. The top part and the edges are the darkest. While it gets lighter moving towards the bottom, you can use all the sorts of bluish tones gray or and some purple. Different species have different Korca munitions. See the pictures here, so feel free to make the above color shades following with your taste. The muscle meats collar. Usually it's in the range that goes from yellow to intense orange texture. The main textures feature off. An open muscle is represented by the mother of Pearl Layer. To give the idea of these material, my approach is to proceed with the wet on wet technique, mixing ray indigo, blue and purple. This way we would have a soft transition between one caller and another, giving more the idea off the mother pair kind of reflection de taste on the picture. Here I have market a black line area. This is the Montel Margin, and actually there are two of them that we see as one above the other. When the muscle is open, the muscle is pretty recognizable, even without details, as long as shape, color and texture features are well represented, but adding, these will give to our sketch a little bit off extra realism in case you want to draw an entire plate full of muscles at these, Fisher will help to make this sketch more interesting by changing the position off each muscle and accordingly. Also, the features shown off each side like it will be in aerial plate. Let's start to grow the shell shape with a pencil. I try to exaggerate it with this civilization. On this shape, when I do my sketches, I prefer to focus more on create a shape, easy to be recognized rather than on realism. After the shell, I drove the muscles meat as a noble but with irregular edges. I also add the Montel margins by drawing a couple of irregular bold lines. On one side, I traced the outlines using a 0.5 black fine liner to address the mental margins. I just go over the same lines multiple times with the final ire, but if you prefer, you can use a thicker tips. Fine liner like a 0.3 or even thicker As always, I raise depends alliance before starts Watercolor. I start with the shell first. The wet on wet technique is a technique that requires So what? The paper with water before applying the color. So I'm using my s water brush without any coronate. When the paper is soaked, I start swat pain scree randomly over the surface. Then I had indeed go on the left side and purple leak on the right. I keep adding some color slayer with pains. Great. I go over the shell edges, and with indigo, I give more intensive the first layer. Then I have some purple lake on the top and some Payne's gray on the bottom to mimic the effect of shadow that the muscles meat should have on the shell. I go with the Paynes grey around the shape I wait for the shell to be dry before moving to the meat. I start with the first day off cadmium orange, uneven with the more intense amount of color on the left side. I keep adding layers off orange on the left side and make them blend towards right. I also use cadmium orange with minimum water to call her the area between the monster margins. And now we are ready for our last ingredient for this class, this ring. 6. Shrimp: before starts the sketches stream. Let's take a look to its key features. Shape. The ship year is crucial to give the idea of a stream. One cooked is shrink. Take a spiritually shape, almost like a question mark. As you can see here, color rushing are usually great. One cook. They go from pink to Salman tones. I prefer to throw them cook, since for me it's more appealing to see a think food inside of agree one. But it's just my personal preference, and you can apply the same principle about color. In both cases, the main focus here is on the partner on their body. As you can see in the picture, I alighted their typical striped effect, where white parts alternate with card ones pink or grey as you prefer texture for the purpose of this class and wanted to maintain the sketch is pretty simple, so against at any texture features to my shrimp. But there are a couple that you can decide to apply to give a little extra something. One of these it's a very small dot pattern you can see in the picture On the being carriers . The dot should be darker than the color underneath and placed randomly but more crowded at the edges between the pink and the white areas. Leaving some extra white areas would give the idea off the streams meet moisture and could be very helpful to our the texture feature in the sketch details. Shrimps can be served the with or without their tail. I liked about the tail as entity to give a more please look aesthetically wise. I also prefer to sketch them this way. But if you want to be moralistic and accurate, you can draw them with this kind of shape and said, See the picture on the left of the reference to understand the difference between them. And now it's time. So certain rules as usually I start by sketching the shape with the pencil. If you feel comfortable, you can proceed right away with the fine liner. But the convenience of using pencil first is that you can correct any mistakes or do any adjustment. If you change your mind like I'm doing here. Tracy, our clients. I use this 0.5 black fine liner, and despite what I just said, sometimes I changed my mind at the very last minute. Even if I'm already tracing before moving toe watercolor, I raise the pencil sketch. I start applying the Salman caller on every other stripe and on the tee. After this first layer, I'm applying some Scarlett on the lower edge because here I'm assuming that the light is coming from above and I blend it with a clean, wet brush going from the bottoms lit up. I keep adding darker layers to give more dimension. C zero look seems me to light. I'm adding some Scarlett also on the topper edge and blend it to be quicker. I'm using an author gun to make it dry. It's very easy to find and ship tools. I paid in mind about $15 it's really useful. You cannot turn. It'll be used any drier, but be careful to set Ito the lower temperature. The main particularity off watercolor is that they are a transparent medium, so you build your drumming by adding multiple layers what she were dimensional. A realistic feeling. My best advice is to make each layers Moeller than the previous one or shifted off a few millimeters his way. You will have different shades overlapping and creating that environment. Look that it's one of my favorite watercolor features. Season one to add some interests toe the white areas amusing a very light wash of Salomon them to give more dimension to the white stripes, amounting a very watery wash off Payne's gray at the bottom and also on the head parts of the streams. 7. Conclusion: our first food sketching class. It's over. I hope that you enjoyed it, and I'd love to see your sketches in the product section off the class. Next week, I release the second food sketching class about nigari sushi. The difficulty and the time required to drawn every single food in the classes to come will slowly group. So by the end of the fifth week, you will be able to sketch a different types of yummy food. If you have any comments, feedbacks or requests, please feel free to ask me in the discussion section and I'll answer as soon as I can. Thank you so so much for watching and see you next week. Bye.
