E-Residency is Awesome - The Why.

1. 1.0 - introduction: this course is around 20 minutes. Welcome to the first course about Estonia residency. In this course, I will do an overview off the East Stonier e Residency Digital I. Card online and thoughts about the residency in terms off digital nomads. 2. 1.1 - what is e-residency: the residency allows you to set up a business in Estonia from anywhere in the world. It used to be that you have to go to Estonia and set up a bank account on fill out all the paperwork. But now they've put a law through that enables anybody use Electronic Resident. And that's about 10,000 people so far in 2016. To set up a business remotely, I think you still have a few issues with banking. But on the whole, you can pretty much do this remotely or release that, putting through a law to be able to do this remotely. It's a very easy process some people have managed able to do within 2025 minutes. It's a transnational digital I D, which means its location independent. You can run your business from anywhere in the world but have it based in Estonia. The Republic of Estonia is the first country to offer e residency to people other than its citizens, and so that's kind of huge because they're really confident about the digital access and security they've gone. They're called E residency doesn't allow you to vote. He doesn't give you voting rights in this stony. I think a lot of people have seen this is some kind of passport to another country ply for electronic residency, and it gives you certain attributes, but it actually doesn't give you any of those usual citizen things that you would get for living in that country. The biggest thing is obviously, that you can digitally signed documents as if you were face to face with somebody writing your name on signature a document. You can actually sign them Elektronik. And they're just as legal. You could do e banking. You do all your taxes and everything online. I think I watched a documentary the other day where they said, You can do it within three clicks, and by 2018 the digital I D. Will be used in your Obviously, we'll see it in more software in the next few years. 3. 1.2 - go go xroad: So once you have your e residency card, you get access to this E S T I dot e dash board. On the right hand side is something that we're going to get into that Estonia is built, which makes the residency card work. So all of the database services that use electronic residency in in the country business taxes, medical car insurance and other silos are all connected together by this thing called the Internet X Road. Been around for about 14 years, and it's iterated. Detroiter, I think, is inversion six now. But it's a way off bringing together different databases, different services. And if if anybody knows anything about local government, you'll know that a lot of these databases are separate there in silos, they're not connected together. You have to have such an access to them, and most of the time that's done through paper requests. So you would send in a request that it may take up to 4 to 6 weeks for you to get information out of that database. What they're doing with the X Road is they've created adapter service for each one of these silos, so you have population register health insurance, telecom banks energy. What this enables sorters to do is to query those databases so you can query the vehicle registration. The insurance company can check your vehicle registration. A chemist local chemist might be able to check your health insurance register to make sure that ableto have that prescription again. Also, riel time Energy banking, Population register. I saw something to do with that. You have a child in Estonia, ultimately gets its own e residency set up, and it's just a really fast digital way of being l to reduce the amount of paperwork that you would normally have no waiting weeks for answers. Data Silas that work together in the data is shed. I can see a future with the X Road, and I'm sure, as a developer, you can even sign up and use the X Road as 1/3 party as a business but like a bolt on services that use the same kind of structure that may may open almost like an open A p I for startups and businesses around health and environment. Andi even advocacy 4. 1.3 - digital id across the eu: so the actual card itself. 248 bit public key encryption. It comes with two certificates onboard that card that two certificates, one for authentication and the other one is for digital signing. Verify documents remotely division. By putting your four digit pin in, you use a combination of the two for different services. Digital trust services are coming across secure borders so that we can have these secure cross borders transactions. Trust services and E. I. D is actually part off the digital economy and society for the digital single market, which is something that's rolling out across the U in the next few years. That's actually got on you. Regulation 9 10 1 2004 which is called E. I. D. A s regulation, which kind of pulls together E identification website Authentication E signature Easily stampede delivery. These six components maker almost cross border tendering. So if you've ever been a situation where you didn't know if the person's website was legit , you didn't know if the signature you have to wait for paperwork coming across from different countries. Timestamp that delivered the actual email was coming from somebody legitimate. That's actually lawn now from the first of July 2016. But it's part of a bigger, bigger regulation for the digital single market, which is like I said, this electronic identification and signature E I. D. A s regulation is intended to standardize Elektronik signatures across work. So, for instance, which company wants to participate in a public call for tender and curation? Before, you didn't know if this the website was legitimate or haven't been hacked, various documents might be not legitimate. You might have missing documents never to sign for them. The amount of time that that's lost documents issue could happen instead of it being two weeks for attended to go. And you could do this in a few hours. And obviously the biggest benefit over this is that you've got the paying of the tax, the signing of the contract tenders in the invoicing, all wrapped together and one really nice, efficient tender. So instead of spending 100 year old, you could probably spend 10 to 20 euros on a tender. So instead of just going in for one tender, you may going for 10 on The benefit of that is that you might actually win one of those tenders of the speed of access. To be able to export your services to other countries in the next few years is gonna be huge. 5. 1.4 - digital id auth and service silos: so digital i d for log in. This is one of the benefits I see off the residency from Estonia is that at the moment we kind of tied to Facebook Connect or Google Log in or just email with this adds another dimension of authenticity to it because it's actually being hardware checked by 2048 bit Carter using your card to verify your identity that you were in that place when you signed for it when you logged in. Using that actual digital I D. Instead of somebody just scamming your log in details, getting away from things like Facebook connected something that I'm interested in. So software services like Teleport that all are already using the residency smart cards for log in. You can log in with Facebook and Google and Twitter, but now they're offering the residency, and I'm really interested to see where startups, especially ones that are geared around travel and digital nomads. Digital No matter, obviously a massive trending item in terms of S E O these days, and also there is stats out there and block post that say, By 2035 we will have over a 1,000,000,000 nomads Elektronik Lee, freelance. Working around the world. So Absolute Teleport, which help you find a good place to live and work there, starting to adopt it. I can see a lot more services doing the same in the future. So all of your health insurance, vehicle registration documents, energy, telecoms, banking it's all linked together by this digital I. D card on. What's wonderful about it is that already people are starting to build on top of the expat AP I being services where you can visually see at a glance bits that you might have added in. So, for instance, here there's like a driving licence is a boat license, health insurance, family doctor, companies that you own and real estate. And I. I like this open, transparent idea that all the businesses and services concede this because I feel like it's almost game if eyeing your life in terms of things that certain people from society might not like or enjoy doing. I particularly don't understand the idea of owning a printer and printing off lots of paper paperwork and waiting for weeks for this to happen. So for me, this might not be the ultimate way to do digital I D. But it's the only one that's really out there that I can use at the moment that they're standing behind in terms of the encryption level. So there's portals for this for electrical e ticket's tax, E police parking and also for schooling for your Children to find out where your level of schooling is that for your Children being after checking on their reports, checking on the teachers and things like that. The key thing to this is that the silos talk to each other. On the card is the authentication air, but also that every one of those silos that is queer it. There's also a transaction log to make sure that you can keep up with who's been accessing your data. 6. 1.5 - perfect for digital nomads: Elektronik residency. I think it's perfect for a location. Independent digital nomads setting up a business, a lot of nomads set up also in Hong Kong, South Korea. But I think having based in Estonia means that you can set up and run a business there. And that s only a is part of the you. So you can do business with other countries through your electronic residency. Also being able to travel but have have banking as well, I think opens up things like Airbnb. Or maybe you have a new start up idea that you're looking to do. Estonia is looking pretty much like a hotbed off start up activity right now and I think that there's gonna be a lot of opportunity in the coming years. I think also, if you're looking to do business across the EU in amore effective way, I really like where the X path technology on the culture of it in the ethos of it stands because being l've to link all of that together transparently allowed people to query that people would be interested in your services and then tendering directly to you. It just I think it opens up an avenue that we've never seen before. For small businesses, the digital dashboard being able to access that from anywhere or your banking and tax is extremely powerful. And also recently there's been a 10 fold increase to the residency website after the Brexit . And I think there's a lot of people now looking at the impacts of what it will have financially on their life, in terms of jobs in the work and being able to find work across the EU on this. Like I said, Iran is another way of being able to do that. 7. 1.6 - the roundup: So the roundup hope we explained within 15 20 minutes there a little bit about the residency. Obviously, this is not a fully fledged course, but I just wanted to give you an overview of how it's being used things to look into the 2018 plan across the U for electronic signatures and I d is gonna be massive. I think it's something that you should look into. It's gonna be widely accepted across Europe if you are from the UK and considering starting a business in Estonia.
