1. Introduction: Hi. My name is Susan. I'm a certified entangle instructor and artist educator. I'd like to invite you to take my class calls and little gems in ink and water colors. This class is designed for both beginners and intermediates alike. One of my greatest thrill just to show people how to create something that they might on the outset think looks complicated. And they constructed into simple 2 to 3 steps. Please join me in this class that's get started.
2. Materials: for this class will be using some water color card paper. I'm using the Strathmore watercolor paper, which is good for both acrylic and wash. If you do not want to use this kind of paper or if it seems too large for you, I like working in a small mole skin or water color sketchbook. So once we decided that what substrate we're going to work on, you will definitely have to have a waterproof pen. I use a micro own, but there are many waterproof pens on the market. The only thing that matters it has to be waterproof because if you go over with water color paint, the payment will dissolve. Then, of course, you're going to need what color. So I have my watercolor said. Here, you're going to need water. Then I'm going to use a water brush, but clearly you can use any brush you like. Okay, so there's just a brush. Then, when that's all being dry, you can go back. You'll go back and shade with a pencil and then to soften the graphite lines, you'll use a water stump if you have. If not, you can use your finger. But clearly a water. Some paper stump is much better, and then the highlights will be done with a signal brand Univ. All white pigment pen. As an added touch, I'm mentioning this last as it is really not necessary. However, you can tap or drop in any metallic watercolor powder or think that you have into the white gems this. Can I just that little poppers into your work. There are so many brands on the market in the varying degrees of price, it's not important to go out and buy one, but if you do have it, it is kind of fun.
3. First Gem Shapes : okay for the first step. What we're going to do is we're just going to draw five, five or six organic shapes on your card or your paper. So I'll start off with an oval, maybe something like a triangle e shape, maybe a small orb. Shape a rectangular shape. Andi, Another rectangular oblong shape on one more. So that would be Step one how the next thing you'll be drawing an aura inside or outside these shapes. I will do it on the inside, but it doesn't make any difference. So to win here and notice sometimes is thin or thick. Not to worry a tall this is not to be judged in any sort of way, so that is step one.
4. Connecting Gems: so I'd like to show you how to create some of the connections between the gems. So here I have a little strip car test card. How I can connect all these gems with a simple chain like this. Now, this takes only two steps. I will demonstrate. I'll go from letter aid. The letter B Step number one is I will create just like a small, squished being or rice colonel, these little orbs or they're not squished. Orbs. That's step one. Then I will make a parallel line going to the top of this bean shape and then I will do the same thing for step two. I will continue to do this until I get to my destination. Now, these a little rice kernels connectors are actually space fairly far apart. You can have these space very closely together as well. There's no problem. And so when you get to the final one, you just sit there. So that's a simple chain. So that's what this would look like. Now I will show you a beaded string. So this here is another strip card where I've connected with this pattern here again, all these patterns take only two steps. So the first step is I'm going to go from a the destination B, and I'm going to make a parallel line with a little knob at the end of darkened knob than behind this. I'll make a semi circle. I don't cross the line, I stay behind. I'll do it again. Step one. You make a solid my dog blind like this, you go behind, take, avoid shape. The one goal behind notice. I'm not going in behind the line. I'm just starting behind the spot, and I'm actually imagining where that would cross. You can vary the all these shapes. You can make squares instead of round beads you can make ovoid shape is long. Whatever shape you want, leaf shapes. You can lengthen this little string in between its report. But what you'll find is once you do the get the hang of just doing the two steps, your mind can drift. And this is actually what the whole purpose of this kind of work is is to relax and not worry about the outcome. So there is a beaded string on a simple chain. Now the simple border is really quite explanatory. It's just a parallel line running through, but I section it off into these little sections. I will show you how that is that. Just create a wavy line from a to B, and you don't have to worry about the thickness is being the same weaken go thick, then they don't have to be. As long as you're parallel, the with doesn't matter. Then I will turn my paper. And when you're working on this as well, I suggest you to turn your paper. It seems more comfortable to draw your pen towards you. So you're going to step two is create thes little divisions. You don't have to count and you immediately know what the next step is. This is the beauty of this kind of work. You're not concerned about the outcome. You're more involved in the process. It always looks good and you never know what you're going to get till you're finished. So that's then you're gonna go back and down everyone, you're going to make a little hash marks towards the center. I'm gonna leave the center white or the paper white, and you're just gonna curve the hash marks like a contour of the shape but you don't have to, but it looks nice. Okay, so now, by leaving the center of whiter actually creating a highlight in this particular art form, you never have to worry about where your light sources for shading like you do in landscape or figured of drawing or any kind of work. It's imaginary, and it's actually it's a doodle. You don't have to worry. There's no writer wrong, Bootle. It's just what you do and how you feel, and you can change this any way you want. It's another rule. Pfanner is sort of the most intriguing one of all. It takes a little bit more thought, but let's go ahead. I'll go from a to B. There's no direct line, so the same is a simple border. I'll continue along like this parallel line, and I will take one line. It doesn't matter which one and just curve it around onto itself. I lift up my pen, I will cross that solid line, follow along and do the same. I'm going to stop there and order for to go underneath you. Imagine where the line would follow and continue another line. So you go parallel and then you come along here. So you're gonna catch this line and do the same thing. I notice it gets thick and thin. That's kind of the intriguing part of it. Then you're gonna follow along. Where would come out, match it here and then maybe turn around this way. Stop that line. Follow along here. Imagine where will come out. End up a letter B. So your basic creating over under rope banner. So let's put this all together in the next video.
5. Inking the Drawing: All right, now, back to our card. I hope this is the current that I started on. I have my shapes. All this connected. I will connect some of them using this simple chain pattern that we practiced in the first video. So I will connect these two shapes. So the first step of human may recall just creating little squished being things, and I'll just continue these. So that's step one. Step two will connect from with a parallel line. Same thing Just gonna continue around. Okay? And as you're doing this, remember to her lots, there is no concern about whether it's right or wrong. You may have noticed on the materials list that I did not mention an eraser. We're moving forward with a pen. So this one here. So maybe I'd like to join these two, so make a little connector here, all right? And no, I can leave it at that or continue all It depends on your mood. But in order to save you're time, I'll continue the next one with a beaded string. Okay, so that would be this one here with this beaded screen, so I will maybe do these two the beaded screen. Start up here. Step one member of the dark well behind and I've actually changed the shape a little bit. Doesn't matter. As long as you're consistent in the shape. What connects these two going from behind? So that's these two connected? No, you don't have to connect any of the others. You don't have to use all the different borders that we practice with this one here too. But I think I would do this one here. This is the rope banner. So I'm just going to see where I end up with this. I'm going to make a line like this and continue around. I'm going to stop there. Bring this here. Imagine where would come through. So now that all the shapes are connected, I will start to embellish and create some patterns within these gem shapes. So the easiest want to start with is I just create little orbs within the channel here. And if you notice I said the word orb again, I have mentioned this before. Don't worry about trying to make anything perfect. Just do a avoid shape. Just squeeze it in and move it all around the rim. Okay? Another interesting shape you can make up your own is just creed lines. You will come up with your own embellishments and there's no right or wrong way. This is just an entry into creating your own work. You could go back and color in every other one you can create, just like Weise up and down. Turn your work. You can. Also, if you like, just put a dot and each one of these segments, you can leave them plain as well. I'm going to send riel time. And, of course, because I am on video, I am speeding up my process, an order to show as much as I can so you can leave them blank. Come up with your own patterns. Maybe just do a scallop edge around. You can even work on the outside. There is no right or wrong. This is where years you'll just take over and do what you feel right. You start to feel confident with your hand, so maybe I'll dio dark in each. When it is in, don't worry about things not being perfect. We will go back and finally and reinstate and dark in certain lines. Eso as I do this, I myself, I myself getting into a bit of a trance state. It's nice to relax doing this. Leave one blank if you like. You can also leave one blank or and create a fan pattern like the WiFi. Simple. Just around that. This is where you can doodle and have fun. These are just little fan shapes. There's no right or wrong way, and you can stop or start wherever you like. Doesn't have to go all the way around. You're just creating repetitive patterns. When you're finished working with the black and white, you can actually believe it like this. Photograph it, copy it and use it as a coloring guide. But I will continue on and come back when this is the
6. Painting Demo: all right, so now we'll start with adding the water color. Now this technique is a wedding. What technique? I was showed both ways. I'll use my water brush and then I'll use a conventional brush. I'll pick one of the gems, and I'll just squeeze a touch of water into the gym, and I moved the clear, clean water to the parameters of the shape. Now you. It's hard for you on camera to see how wet this is, and you will learn with practice, so I'll turn it and you'll see a slight sheen a little bit more. I'll just squeeze and get some more water. If there's too much water, I can tap off and soak it up. So maybe this particular stone, I will dip into the blue, and I would just touch the edge of the shape with more water, and I'll just flood it. Now it's all wet. I'll just move my paper and see where it travels to. This is all on camera. Let's go over the end. So just at some water and wherever the water is, it will flow. Yeah, that's better so touching and just happened somewhere, and it'll just spread, it becomes like a happy little spontaneous thing, so so it will dry, always a different color. Later. It always lightens up. Water called always lightens up, and at this point you could move to the edges. Less is more now. If you wanted to add an extra color, wipe off your brush, squeeze off. I know if I touch into the yellow, it will make a green. So how about I try some of these paints of putting myself just tap some color in here? Remember, there's no perfect stone like it could be anything. Stones are all different, so just play with the color. Move it around. And whatever you do, don't judge until it's completely dry and always go back. If you need to with more paint and just have fun with this, maybe darken it up a little bit. It's sections and just let it travel. Okay, so I'll show you how to do this with a regular brush. Take another stone. Rinse out your brush in Clearwater, paint clear, clean water on the other gem. Turn my paper. Move my pit box of okay. So I think it's fairly what it's hard to see That's right. So maybe I'll make this one some color. Just tap this color and see what happens over that's gonna need. Look at that traveled. Okay, So if I want to have a contrast in color on the other side, Green said, My brush, maybe I'll try red. So I'll just happened some red and see what happens. My brush and I'll turn my paper and let it mingle on its own letter travel. Let's do its own thing where the water has stopped makes ah, boundary have. So there's that one. Now you'll notice on this particular I didn't get the water right to the edge, So all you have to do is take your dryer brush and just move along the side there, and it'll now if you find the stone is a little bit too wet, you can always take a thirsty brush. That means squeeze at all the water and just touch on a certain area, and it'll pick up some of the pigment. Also, it'll create highlights. We'll do another one with a regular brush, and I'll just do one color. So what color shelling news. Use a bluestone so this will wet on wet. Maybe I'll just tend to taking See what it looks like. Looks on my old color here. So now you can sort of see the color. So I'm just gonna go straight to the edge of the Jim. And the reason there's a bit of a color minded. This could be a technique to so that the camera can pick up where I'm going with the water . So I will use a one color only blue Ultra Marine tap around. Now, there are so many wonderful, wonderful skill share videos on creating Galaxies with watercolor just moving around. Don't judge. Now, you may have noticed that I have a paper clip. I didn't mention this in my intro video, So open up a paper clip and if you'd like to create a crack, you can just scratch through the wet paint just a little bit. And the pigment well, sort of sink into the fibers of the paper so I could do this here too. So you'll see when this dries, it creates like Fischer. Now I love the way this is. Look, this is all just kind of nifty, but I'll put it one little line in here but you don't have to. It's a crack. Stones all have little, so we'll leave it like that. So now back to my water brush. What's don't? Maybe I'll do a amethyst or purple stone, so I have to mix up some read and some purple on your flu. Okay, so again, I have a clean my brush, squeeze out some water. There is a bit of a movie, look to it, and I'm just going to the edges like I have done before, and I'll pick up some of this purple, then just drop it in. So kind of like that. Sometimes I just like it perfect like that. So squeeze out the water habit. I thought it was in the other brush. And then maybe a touch of green. I kind of need kind of reminds me of, um, laughter, Right. So we'll let that try. Maybe I'll put a little scratching it with my trusty paperclip. And of course, you don't have to do this. There are other ways to get the little lines in there. You could even use pencil crayons after, but I just think it this fun, and I always keep a paper clip in my water container for safety Pin. It's all been said my brush and my last stone. He built a bright yellow, so that's some water to the edge. I think it's always quite okay. Thanks. So squeeze more water with the brush. Nice yellow. It's great. Some water. It's nice and bright. I like it. More intensity try. So I'm just using it. Um, warmer yellow. I think this yellow is actually Quinn gold quinacrine on gold and a little bit more. So let travel sort of like a train, and we cannot go back with my paperclip create maybe just one line or two lines, and I'm finding it's a bit wet, so I'll squeeze out the water from my water brush and with a thirsty brush, just pick up some of this pigment. Here we go. And so we wait for that to dry and they will come back and put a blended robe banner in here. When this is dry
7. Banner Demo: you have maca metallic colors. This is always a nice timeto ad in the wet paint metallic color somewhere. Just drop it in the worry about it. Even when it's dry, it develops a lovely little sheen and glitter. Very, very subtle. But if you don't have it, you don't need it. It's just I have it. It's fun, and I wanted to show you an extra option. All right, so now my pieces dry, the gems air dry. And for those who do have some metallic pain, if you look at it sideways, it kind of glistens. You don't have to have, but it's a nice touch. So now I'm going to create a colored hombre pattern in this rope border and along the same lines as we did with the gems. We'll continue the same way you're going to squeak, get some clean water, squeeze it out of your brush, and I'll start from here and you're just going to paint with clean water. The banner call along. So at this point, you sort of have to keep in mind your color wheel. Sort of not really. So I'm entire better all squeeze some more water, kind of a lot, and this is sort of gonna create a channel. Now the water is a little bit tended, hopefully so that you can see it on the video. I've tended it with yellow, which is a rather fugitive color. Okay, well, seeing that it's yellow. Let's start here So I'll take a color. I'll take this Blue makes it interesting blue, and I'll just tap it here and it'll just travel along that line, so even coax it along. Can you say I hope so? And here, at this point, still you can I still have the blue in my brush Coax it to the edges and then I will rinse out my brush her wipe it clean. Now on this other side, I'll pick up some yellow and put the yellow in here. Now, when you we mix it, we'll see how the yellow and the blue blend. Of course, it probably took it to the camera there. I don't know if you can see this. I'm just tilting paper around and letting I think color do its own thing. So I still have yellow on my brush. I will continue our in some blue as well. Continue here, So that's kind of made a decision for me. I like that. Continue white. Both the excess at some more water. Maybe I'll get some ultra marine blue. Yeah, and so is it. Meets with the water. Could be a little wetter. It doesn't matter. Just a little bit more water. Don't let travel. I always add a touch. More water, touch, more color. Maybe a little bit of yellow here, of course, not becomes green. It really doesn't matter color. And it'll travel all of its own. Don't for you could go out of lines because we can address that situation later. So clean off my brush. Okay, Clean up my fresh. And even if a crosses along that line, it's beautiful. You'll see. We'll fix that later if it needs to be fixing. So I'll turn my paper and all address this line here. So I have a clean brush. Add water in the channel, touch more water. That may be too much. So soak it up. Never say I've now used the thirsty brush. Or you could also just dip with your corner of your cloth just in here. So run the read There himself. Maybe start for a We're just let a travel will do its own thing. You can. So on the other side of this red, maybe I'll wipe my brush again. I'll pick up a color, maybe blue, see if it makes a nice purple and just let it travel by itself. This is the magic of water color. You really can't force it. And that's the fun of all of it. So I'll clean my brush and through the next channel in a car over there, a little bit of water run along the channels River. It's hard to see. I think, out 10th and secrecy it a little better, Not really. There we go top along. I'm not really brushing. I'm tapping the color. Here we go and we'll rinse off. Wipe off brush and what? This a little bit and bring in some red and it'll just lend away fresh off your brush and just move it along. If you find that it's not moving the way you want, I always add more water and guided along with your brush so we'll wait for that to dry
8. Highlights Shadows & Finishing Touches: pick up my pencil and we'll do some shading, so there's no right or wrong way to shade. If you think of a light source from one direction, you would know where the light source would be into shade on the corresponding side. But I have found that it's really just nice to shade on the edges of some of these on this banner. Just shade the entire hedge I'm using, Ah, fi pencil. Any pencil would be a softer lead is usually a little nicer, and then you can pick up your stomach and soften. Those lines will develop some death, so I like to do the edges just because it's a simple starting place. Anything that goes under, I might darken. Go back with your stomach paper blender. So say, for example, here on this here, I might just do every other scallop. All right, so now I've shaded these lines and you can go around and shade behind. It's up to you how you want to shade. Sometimes when the stump is kind of dirty, it's the best. It's like old jeans thing shade around the pieces. What's important here is not to worry about a light source Because this is an imaginary drawing. It's all fine. So now I'm going to take my Univ. All the white gel pen and I'm going to put on some highlights. So So just a small little crescent. You don't want to overdo it. A few dots. So here on the blue, I'll just make small line. This sort of sets everything. Office finishes it again. Here, on the corners, some thoughts in here, If you like working with a white panel over water colors Just so amazing. So So you may have been wondering in the or you might be wondering why I was there. Why didn't show you a candle at the beginning of the materials video? When you're finished and everything is dry, do wait for the pen to dry. What I have found is that if I brought this thump of a white candle over the gems, it sort of brings a shine to them.
9. Follow up & Thank you: Hi. Thank you so much for taking my class. I hope you enjoyed it and you learned a few things I know for myself creating the skill chair class. But I also had some learning curves that were a little bit challenging for me. But if you have any questions about the class, please post them in the community section downstairs below, not downstairs and post your projects in if you like in the project section or, alternatively, you can instagram them hashtag Susan store Teeny. That's my name. Hashtag Season 13 e and I'll be sure to look at them. I also want to you to remind you to just have fun. This is one of the few art projects that sets you off in a direction or you create something beautiful. But it doesn't matter. It's the process. It doesn't matter what it looks like if you do any kind of figured over landscape drawing and I've got a share of it. Um, you have a preconceived idea what? It should look like this kind of artwork. It's really meant to sort of discover your inner blueprint. And if you do something completely different than what I demonstrated um, that's awesome. That's awesome. And remember, we all learn the alphabet in school, eight is said and we all learn penmanship if you are a vestige. But no signature in the world is the same. All signatures or unique. Every mark you make is unique. So please, if you are interested in any more of my classes, please hit the follow button. And I'm looking forward to seeing you again. And thank you so much for taking my coughs by.
