1. Double Oval Drops Earrings - an intermediate soldering project: I have my name's John Tinley. I'm a jewelry designer and shooter from South Close UK and welcome to the double over drops hearings Class the Syrians. France will show you how to get a little bit more variety from your discussed, but I start off with two discs hearing, and I'll show you how to use a hammer to stretch those circles into ovals. We'll also be practicing on soldering skills as there is a little bit of delicate soldering that's needed, and that's what makes this class intermediate one. However, if you are still building up confidence suffering skills, I will show you the slightly easier, simpler version of the design. 2. Double Oval Drops Earrings - materials: the's of the materials that we're going to need to make the earrings going to be cutting the four ovals that we're going to need out of a piece of no 40.8 millimeter. That's 20 gauge sterling silver sheets are quite often news. No 200.5 myr meter for small earrings. But I want to use thicker metal in this case because that will mean that there's more metals to spread out while son hammering and some going to get longer ovals. Not 0.5 millimeter sheet, which not have as much silver to move about. So the overs would be a little bit more squat. No 0.8 millimeter is going to give me a little bit more metal to manipulate with a hammer. I'm going to be making the ear wise. Usual from North 0.8 millimeter, a young 20 gauge sewing silver around wire. Andi, I'm going to be making a pair of head pens for the beats to dangle below the earrings out of a 0.5 millimeter wire. The beads, since I've chosen, are two lovely flow right teardrops lovely bluey green color, and they have the whole running from top to bottom Seiken straight head pin through
3. Double Oval Drops Earrings - equipment: These are the hand chores that we're going to need to make the double over drop earrings. The ovals were actually going to start life as discs, so I'm going to be cutting those out with my disk. Attar. I'm going to have the leather cushion underneath the discounter to support it and keep the noise down a little bit. I'm going to hit the cutting punches with an old hammer. It would then be time to give the discs a texture. I'm going to be using my old Swiss style hammer, my cross peen hammer. Andi. By using that hammer, I'm going to stretch the circles into ovals, and I'll explain a bit more about that when we get to that section to cross whilst hammering the silver is going to be on top of the steel bench block with the other question underneath again to keep the noise down. I would then be Domingo, the ovals RB, using my domain block again, sitting out on top of another cushion while I'm going to use wooden punches rather metal ones, because metal ones would smooth out the hammer texture that I would just have put in. I don't want that to happen. The wooden punches are not softer and kinder on textured pieces. All of the other tools you can see here are for preparing and finishing off the ear wise. I've got nine on your pliers, flat nose pliers around those pliers and wire cutters for cutting and shaping the ear wise . I'm going to be putting distinctive. You bend in the ear wires using Set Mandel, although of course, you could use anything round to help you do that. Instead, perhaps one of the wooden punches says, I'm going to be using Andi. I'm going to be using the needle file to smooth and round off the end off the wire so it's comfortable too close to your ear. The last tour that you can see here. It's a planet Shing Hammer. I'm going toe hammer part of the ear wire to give it a little bit of extra strength. Again, I'm gonna be hammering the silver on top of the bench block with the leather cushion underneath. Double Oval Drops Earrings - soldering equipment: thing is the soldier equipment that I use for all of my smaller projects, such as earrings and sore pendants, everything sitting on a couple of slate tiles, a heatproof surface to help protect my desk on my work sits on a couple of soldering bricks , soldering blocks, while some heating it up. One of these soldering bricks is made of a softer material than the others. Because it's softer, it's picked up some dips and some cracks in it. It's being used over the years, and these could be very useful for supporting work that isn't completely flat. The charcoal block is there because I melt small piece of scrap on top of that on. Do they form nice of my balls as I am used to decorate my projects when I need to pick up my work or to support it whilst I'm soldering? I used reverse action tweezers that you can see here and have also got a pair on a stand through 1/3 hand, and it's there when I need 12 on extra hands to help me out. The blue handled stick is a soldier pick on and that I used to push soldier move it about to make sure it it's exactly what I wanted to be. Soldier usually comes in strips or sticks. Andi, I've got three different melting temperatures here that I using combination for different projects. The soldier gets cut into small pieces or Palin's you ting. The red handles snips as I keep those little pieces in the labeled boxes that you can see do. Make sure that you label your boxes because once a soldier is cut up, you won't be hard to tell which is which. Melting temperature. My curl over the ends off the sticks of solder so that I can tell which melting temperature they are, the more cold over they are, they're higher. The mountain temperature, bright yellow liquid is a flux. Solder won't actually flow out through the joining unless you use a flux with it. Andi, the paintbrushes. What I used to apply the flux to the joints in my work. Small projects like hearings only need a small blowtorch, and I've got two different makes of those here. Both of them are easy to refill with the gas that comes in aerosol cans since the same type of gas, butane gas that you use to reform cigarette lighter At the back of the picture, you can see a so cooker that Scots a very mild acid solution. Good safety pickle in it. When you heat silver up, the surface becomes not darker and dirtier looking that some of the capo in the study silver reacting with the heat and auction flame to forward cause copper oxides on the safety pickle cleans it a couple oxides up before you put your work in the safety pickle, it needs to be cooled down or quenched in a pot of water. Andi, you need to put your work in and out of the safety pickle with brass or plastic tweezers. Not the stainless steel ones that I showed you before and thus, but definitely not least our home safety glasses. You've only got one pair of eyes. Look after them carefully.
5. Double Oval Drops Earrings - cutting the discs: Each of the earrings in this design has a pair of ovals. Andi. Each over starts out as a disc. I'm going to be cutting this out of the North 0.8 millimeter sheet, are going to be using 1/2 inch diameter Qatar or punch on a 12.7 mother. Meech is, um, Andi might have heard me say before that, So they're my discussed. Her looks a little bit reaching up. It is a very good quality one. It's just last decade old. It is what got a lot of Marxism use on it. It was really nice one, because the two parts hold the silver or the sheet metal, Whatever you're cutting out nice and firmly together said it doesn't move about as it's being cut on Duthie Cutting head off the punches. ISS sloping, says nice and sharp edges on D rather than being flat, which we try and punch out the discord. At one time, it's slopes, so you start to cut at one point on the cups, then spritz around the circumference, which gives a much better finish. So those two things combined to mean that I can cut really nice disks very close to the edge of the silver. I'm trying to make this about C in C in that at the moment when you see a darker bits up in here where the edge is the age of silver is still inside the cutting error. Just later. Protect. Yes, I had chosen the right hole. I might get going to move that piece of silver until the edges are just out of you. Okay, so that when I tweet that in and use the hammer to hit it through my justice, have you got to see how close to the edge it cuts through. So we're cut three more disks says I have two full each hearing each time, just making sure that those edges are just so lightly House of you three, Class one. Okay, so four discs 24 gearing. You can see a re make good use of that piece of sheet as a little bit there that I might be able to use to, um, cutting off small a pair of earrings out. You never know. But most of these bits will end up in my scrap hot waiting to be recycled into a new piece of sheets on wire for another project. The next things I need to do is obviously remove the plastic coating that's on there. I tend to leave from there as long as possible to protect the surface and scratches, but I'm not going to remove that Andi hammer the discs, which will make them over.
6. Double Oval Drops Earrings - hammering: I got 4/2 inch diameter discs. Nice shiny silver have taken the blue plastic coating. Officer. I can get the best hammered effect. But before I start hammering, I went to explain why I am using this particular hammer. It says My favorite hammer. It is a cross plane, so a straight head cross head hammer sometimes what a Swiss style hammer, maybe sometimes called a Goldsmith hammer on this. What she started out with a thick ahead. Andi. It's been ground down into now ahead, but more point. And that's what gives its lovely texture. It's one that I actually inherited, so it's it's one that's older than I am, and it gives a beautiful texture. But the reason I'm using this one is that metal moves at right angles to the head of the hammer. So if you've got a round head right, angles to the head is in every single direction, so there isn't going to be that much movement on silver. However, if you've got a straight head or across bean head, then right angles is going to be that directional. This least the metal is going to spread in that direction. So if I hammer one disc of my hammer across a disk in one directions. Airlines on the hammer of running across like that, the disc was start to spread out. No change from being around to being oval. Now how over it becomes would depend on two things. It will depend on how much hammering you do, because if you read you a little bit of hammering, the metal is only going to be spread out a little bit. If you do a lot of hammering, you can deliberately spread the metal out even more. But the other thing is to do with the thickness of the metal and the project section of class. I said that I quite often news no 0.5 millimeter sheet for small earrings. Andi. That's because you know what the earrings be quite light. No 0.5 millimeter sheet is going to give you a lighter pair of earrings. But the main reason is it. If it's of a small piece of jewelry, like a pair of earrings, you don't need the strength that a thicker piece of sheet is going to provide. The earrings will be strong enough, with just no 0.5 millimeters sheet However, no 0.5 millimeter discs half inch disks obviously don't have as much metal in them as no 0.8 millimeter. This means that a disc cut from no 0.5 millimeter sheet won't be spread out as loan into such a long oval as the same size disk cut out of your 0.8 millimeter sheet. That's the reason I've chosen no 0.8 millimeter for this so I could get some longer ovals hammered out. So nothing of talking to start with a hammering, just going to hammer out the set. So lines are going across. Quite strange. I can actually feel the metal moving underneath my finger a little bit, but it spreads out. - So to show you Carson now there we go. I've pushed their bottoms up against the needle files that you can see. The bottoms are lined up nicely, so you can see clearly that there has bean that effect on this one that would have hammered the lines going across like that. He has started to spread out. Now I'm going to hammer. It's a little bit Mawr service. It spreads out a little bit more, and then I'm going toe hammock the other three too much. - It was one. So if I just show you that one again when he has lengthened down now, so good. Speed the film up a little bit now Andi Hammock the other three. - So we've got four textured and oval shapes now, not circles. You have seen me with high speech, both checking their lengths, pushing them up against the needle file to get lined up. Says so on, also holding them back to back on def. Now there are those of a slight variations in shape because I'm not machine, that's what to give something that's handcrafted, its charm. That said, there are some subset elect variations in. You may also have noticed that every now and again I turned the over around before continuing hammering on. That's because everybody has got a natural tendency center leading with the hammer neither one side or another Andi, because this type of hammer stretches the metal so much. If I hammered just with the disc aligned that way, then I could have hammered harder on one side the disc than the other and therefore ended up with something that wasn't quite over because it might have stretched out one side. What was hammered more heavily than the other side and turning the disc around eliminated that problem. If you have watched the curvy earrings, the hammered, curvy hearings class your see, where I actually used that effect to deliberately curve the what started off as a long, straight strips of wire on, they end up being curved or through hammering with this hammer. So the next thing I need to do is curve those shapes giveth. Um, Aslak don't effect.
7. Double Oval Drops Earrings - doming: So it's time to dome the ovals now, and the reason I'm doing that is so I'm going to be, as you're seeing for the photo of the finished pair will be soldering the disks back to back with. Also, the over was backed about, not circular discs, a more with the ear wire in between. If I do that when they're flat, is going to the well, pretty dull really was. If I do it when they are curved dome that he'll bringing everything to life with a bit more . Andi, I think, make things look a lot nicer. So I've got my doping block. I got some wooden diving punches room, but I'm using the wooden ones and seven my metal ones. The measure ones would hammer out and flatten out this texture, as I've just taken the trouble to put in. I know what the texture and partly to shape the disks, but the texture is nice as well in its own right, when you are Domi a shape, whether it's a circular disk or another shape, you don't want to go for too small a dish straight away. In other words, you don't want to trying to move the metal too far too quickly. So although this fit sing this dish, there's two bigger distance, relatively to the side of the piece of silver between the flat of silver on the bottom of the dish. So if I push in there, Hamid is in there straight away. I could end up getting the around the edges, little bit crease, but even it certainly wouldn't look neat. So what's far better to do is start off born a dish that's not more gentle and then build up. I also like to start off for the punch that is, uh, bigger. A little bit bigger in the shape is on punching, so we'll make sure that that's central. Hold the punch the well. I found him with a musing. O tama, you can see just that has given it a nice curve, but more shape. So I'm going to do the same with or of them from making earrings. Whatever I do toe one, I want to make sure that I do it with the other three as well. Here. Everything else rustling about on the desk as I'm hammering looks need to make sure it's the right way up. Textured side up. Okay, So forth. Um Gosha a curve to them. Now I'm going to move into a smaller day. Something going to go into that one. By the way, when you're choosing your punch using what? To make sure that the outside the punch doesn't come into contact with the ages of the disc . It'll okay again, compared to this one's now around it more curved. Rather, Sandoval's is not around with more curved copped to free last one. Here we go. I think I'm actually going to leave it like that because it is still rosary gentle curve. But if I know holds, um, back to back, then you can see it has given collaborative shape and there will be a bit of wire in between two as well. So another no 20.8 millimeters in between two. If I curved it mawr than you wouldn't Seymour so much of their the surface here s so I think I'm going to leave it at that stage. So next thing if I need to do is prepare the backs a little bit so that it's going to be easier to soldier everything together
8. Double Oval Drops Earrings - filing: in this past the video class. I'm going to do a little bit of filing on the back of each cupped oval so that we end up with a stronger soldier join that's holding everything together. Remember that I'm going to be soldering a piece off no 0.8 millimeter round wire in between each pair of ovals on. I'm going to soldier it onto one over first of all and then puts the second over on top if everything is still rounded. There's not much of a joint surface area between the two, and so the soldering join isn't a strong as it could be. Just a little bit of soldering on the back of here would mean that you want something round going on something flat and so to rounded things going together, and that's going to give things. There's so little bit of extra strength. So it's worth doing. So she used the flat needle file that I showed you the equipment apart of the class and just would you tell the back it's the forward motion of file. It does the job. You can see hope the right catching differently on the center that has a little bit of a flat surface where it's a little bit shiny er on. That is all that we need to do the same to the other three to that's one. There we go. So that's all of the ovals for pageants is shiny obits on the back of each of them says all of them had. Next thing I need to do, you start preparing the ear wires on, then start soldering everything together.
9. Double Oval Drops Earrings - starting the earwires: stop paying the ear wise in the section of the class. On the ear wise, we're going to start off as a lynx off no 0.8 millimeters stones of around. While it's 20 gauge wire, I'm going to form an eye loop at one end of each piece of wire. Andi, it's the I loops that that B is going to hang below. So the I Luke is going to be just hanging below one end off the oval disks when they're soldier together. Now we're a former I loop because my fingers are a fabric bigger than what we're working with. You might not be hard to see every single part off the I loop, although I am going to turning to, so you got two chances to watch it. But I've attached to the class materials a downloadable photo step by step guide of how to make the I loose. So if you're not comfortable with making them already, then download that guide on that will talk you through and show you the process in a lot more detail. So I'm going to work with the whole wheel of why, first of all, because I want to turn on I loop and then use the oval Time kept with me as a guide to then work out where to cut. So going to be using have around those pliers and I'm going to hold the wire so that it is about 1/3 of the way down the pliers. Remember the further towards the handle I go, the bigger the loop. It's going to form Andi. The wire is for lush inside the cutters. It's not so inside the pliers, it's not sticking up. A tour is nice and flush. It was sticking up a little bit. It would actually form a little bit more of a teardrop shape rolls around, so gripped with my finger and some coast where I'm working. So what control over the wife. I had it here, this bit of work, to do almost anything that like to bend about anywhere. So hold it that I'm just going to allow the pliers to twist around and pull the wife through my fingers. And then we go just going to use an ion jal pliers just to make sure that that's I said for a lot. Andi, we're going to do now. A long piece of wire that's ah dangling down Just moved that out of the way. So what I want to do now? So I got to see loop. Just know that oval on and going to estimate how much y I want to cut off convention. How about there that will give me enough. Why? To have a bit of a drop binge the wire over and have a nice old tail at the back. So they cut it off about the air. Maybe, but about there, um, if I cause you talk a fraction longer than I think I'm reading eat, then I can always trim it off later. But I'll see what I can do is and more in. So so use the night on your players just to make sure. But that's nice and straight, and one with the one piece of equipment that I forgot to shape. For a ruler, it is always useful to have a room. Handing should check the length of that. See you we're affair to So what do you use a little a little bit of the wire to form the I loop of the bottom. But that long section is 66 millimeters arms. It's just over 6.5 centimeters. So I'm going to do now his form a second loop and then cut off the same length of why going . Just use a night on your price to make sure that the wise I sent straight and again about 2/3 of the way down the pliers. I watch the ear wise as prepared as much as they need to be now. So it's going to be time to take everything. I was the Soviets section on, sort of everything together.
10. Double Oval Drops Earrings - soldering 1: I thought the ovals on Duthie here. Waas. I started to make over to the soldering station on by set to the ovals up here on the soldering brick s so that I can easily puts the iwas across some like So, when I'm solving off senior holding of my fingers holding with reverse action trees is Andi . You can also see that on all of the ovals. I have drawn Sharpie lines down the longest middle like of the of the ovals. And I've done that so that it is very good guide as to where to hold the whole dear wives some soldering everything. So me, please once just away again before we actually get down to soldering, I want to talk a little bit more about where I'm going to position these wires. Easiest thing to do would be to have the loops at the bottom of the ear wires hanging off the bottom on. That would be easiest because that'd be the easiest way of being up to still get access to the loops, having full access down here and be able to lift them open easily so that you could attach the bead on the hedge pain. But what I'm not going to do is soldiers and a little bit further up so that some of the loop is going to be hidden in between the ovals. Remember, there's going to be another oval on top of Hewas. Well, it's still going to be possible toe lift up that loop a little bit to open it up a little bit to be out to hook Hong the look on the top of the hedge pen. It'll just be a bit more fiddly to do so, but I see that's actually going to give a nice, sir pair of earrings because you're going to have a little bit of structures, awareness of a gap between the oval on the bead. You're not going to see as much of the loop, which I think it's a something. It's gonna give a nice finish. So go for the option that you prefer. If you think that doing it like so it and we little bit Figley then have the loop further hanging off the end. It's still give a really, really nice pair of earrings, but go for the version that you prefer. The first things I'm going to do is melt some solder onto the middle of Theseus ovals onto that filed section that we did earlier. So no move the ear wise out of the way so that they don't get heated up too soon. I'm going to put a drop off flux in the middle beach over and then scrape the excess flux off lion off my paintbrush. I've got my pal Ian's here. I'm going to be using medium solder when the reason for that is that it there needs me free for doing easy soldier on the other over because I'm going to be solving one off to the other and is usually sometimes most difficult thing is getting the soldier out of the box and then officer paintbrush onto I want your silver soldering pick and help with that, going to be quite generous with the soldier. My pieces sold a very, very small. I send the sum to strip through the rolling mill to send it down before I cut it. So so I can constant, graceful pieces. So because it's graceful, I'm using quite a few. Remember, this is the type of project where the excess soldier is going to get hidden. So I got actually about six very, very small pieces of medium soldier sitting there, and what I'm going to do is melt some into place at this stage so that when I put the head pants, I when I put the ear wire across the back, it doesn't remove those bits of soldier after way. So they're heats up around each over so that the flame doesn't go directly on a silver straight away, that where I'm going to dry off the flux quite slowly. Remember, if you drive the flux off quickly, the flux can bubble up quite a bit on Then those pieces of soldiers were carefully put in place. Couldn't move off some color child. Prevent that from happening. The flaps has actually dried off. Now I can see that it's turned from the liquid yellow into blind white powder, so the bits of so drop going to move about too much. Now what? I quickly flame actually onto silver. You hear that the melt into a puddle on the back, just like that. And then the same for the 2nd 1 2nd 1 telling a bit quick her because, of course, it's really picked up some heat from the heating up. 1st 1 that's really flames ready to get up for that. Okay, so I've now got some solder is exactly where I want it on. Although Sharpie markers virtually burnt off, I still can just about see a shadow of it left on each oval. So it's still there. The guide have now got the first ey held in reverse action tweezers on my Bronco soldier it so that the loop is half on half off the oval, just like so. So it's I heated up the soldier. It started to melt again. It started to flow through it further along the ear wire. How it is here, the in place that's the 1st 1 done needs to 2nd 1 too much. I can't move it a little bit further up here surface but more in the middle of the screen. Okay, Soon as I could see that soldier had phone across here along the wire, I moved to flame away because it was being very easy to put too much heating aunt to melt the ear y. Instead, it's going to move the camera in so that you can get a closer. Look at the line of solder around each ear Y. And I'm going to need to put both of the pot made earrings in quench particle down and then the pickle pot to clean up, because at the moment, there, too dirty to what you might oxidation on them to be able to soldier on properly for the other ovals on top. So you should be able to see here on here on its exactly same on the other side And that you were saying, Nice liar soldier showing you that the ear wise on their held securely in place. Now just with one over that is actually still start of a really nice pair of earrings, so you could leave it at that state if you wanted to, But we're going to take it further, make them a little bit fancy essay, end up looking just as nice from the back as they do from the front
11. Double Oval Drops Earrings - soldering 2: The first bit of soldering is as the pickle you can see. They're now I firmly soldier together. We're gonna come off on their cleanup for soldering. I put the second ovals again with the Sharpie lines across the back on the fire bricks. Now, the next job Sonny to do is to again melt some soldier into the middle of each Is that works particularly well with these ones. So we move those out of the way we're going to be using Easy soldier this time because it's got a lower melting temperature so we won't get up the temperature for the medium soldier on these ones. Too remote. So again, going to put but off flux in the middle of each hearing. Andi, then get rid of the excess flux off the brush shirts. I can use a brush to pick up the soldier, and then I got with Italians of soda for pieces of soda in with the easy, So the box and and put the same amount soldier again. So about five or six of these very small pieces of soldier in the middle, these ones were behaving every bit better than the medium soldier Italians and not hiding inside the brush makes a nice change straight so to their they get rid of that. So exactly same cited with the medium soldier of the first ovals. I'm gonna heat up around them, get the flux to dry off slowly certain pieces of soldiers. Italians don't jump off and get the soldier to melt into puddles in the middle of the ovals that wanted move Get back into place again. No one wants to space behave. Every year I can see that the flux has dried now, so start moving across the over solder melted. So we want to the 2nd 1 So that's both of the earrings prepared. They've got soldier in the middle. So So I'm going to do now. Taking each one in turn is hold the first bit of soldering in over section trees. Is Andi lying atop across the top of the oval? Um, I was gonna be far easier than having that down and trying to balance the over on the top. So that's everything, right? Right around in the tweets is useful. This is worth taking a time just to make sure that you're happy with how everything lines up before you apply the heat. Now you have noticed that it is far more difficult at this stage to see whether the soldiers flowing. Unless you look down from this angle, you can see it if you don't this angle. But if you doubt this angles and you can't see whether the ovals are lined up nicely. So what I was having to do was to go by the color of the silver. Remember, Silver takes on a really nice reddish tinge about the same kind of red, actually as the the gas supply. No, on the back of my my broach, or so it takes a tinge of that color red when it gets the right solving temperature. So I knew that when the silver Wasat that color. Then I said an excellent chance of the soldier having melted and flown out. However, there was always a some chance that after I took the torch away to give the soldier time to cool down and I solid again that when I lifted the piece of wire up the bottom over might not come with it. If that was the case, then I would have put it back down again applied some more heat and giving it another go, but says you can see yeah, nicely soldered together. Andi, if you have a look down the middle of thumb find, move it about a bit. Should be able to see some soldier holding everything together. The soldier looks a lot brighter and cleaner than the oxides silver, so that one is ready to move that one out of the way. Is that one up a little bit? So it's easier for me to access and get the second over prepared, held in section two pieces. So again, I'm happy with how that's lining up. Move it out the way ever so slightly. Second, Britain, more heat in here. And then there were back down again. Heat again, Right? That hasn't come up nicely.
