Design an Art Deco Pattern in Illustrator

1. Intro: Hi, guys. My name is Daniela. I am a self taught surface pattern designer from Bucharest, Romania. You can find me in my work online under cranky. Suing. Find a line in the magazine or book to patterns, design and items around your own home. Real world inspiration is all around us, so simply be open to it. And remember, the whole process of creating Woodwards should be fun. So once you have a project idea, break it down into searchable characteristics such as motifs, sees a holiday color, etcetera, and proceed by setting up a mood board on Pinterest, as this is a tool I use quite often. Pinterest is a great tool for visual representations, and it makes it easy to collect and organize creative ideas. I collect images that matched the look and feeling I want to convey through my design for this class project, I will be designing a modern art Deco pattern. My take on this design style says My sells mostly floral. I collect floral prints. I saved them in my Pinterest board. My bathroom design will be fresh and delicate, and I have set my mind on using shades of men. A lavender. I slept the most representative images for each of my characteristics and organize them in a template. At this point, Since I have colors in mind, I extract them at them in my template as a reminder. This is how my wood boards usually look like. I sometimes bring my mood boards and hang them around my workplace to be able to quickly reference back to them or open my Pinterest board to get some fresh new ideas. Is it worth the time? Definitely. Yes. Today we're only making one pattern. But if you're designing about the collection, you want those patterns to fit together and create a cohesive look. At this point, you've set your mind on designing an article pattern. You gather the inspiration and you've started sketching your motives. It's not time to open illustrator and prepare your pattern If you're starting a project from scratch. Open Illustrator and create a new document by going to file new set your number of art boards. I usually start with two outputs, one for designing my motives and the second for creating the repeat style. Of course, as a project, dictate and me end up working with multiple art boards, which usually happens, said the week and hide of your art boards. So I'm going to choose the stem off the flower as my central point of reference, and I will construct my motive around it. I will add elements to the left and to the right of my reference point. I don't need to change the size of the flower, so I'm going to set this back to 100%. I'm going to reflect the X axis, but I will choose the right corner as a reference point and click copy to get the flowers mirrored. Since my elements are myriad, I like to work with groups as it makes aligning easier. So I'm going to group the two smaller flowers and they will align them with the step. This will make the stem the key object and then under a line, I will hit horizontal distribute center, So I will follow the exact same steps to have the leaves in leveller to the left and right of mighty object. I will add some space between the leaves so they don't overlap with the flowers them and have it. Elements show individually for the lavender. I'm simply going to reflect in copied the object by using the reflect tool and moving to the right of the motif. I'm holding the shift key on windows to drag it at the same horse on the line. So when it looks good, I group the to laugh in their flowers. I am aligned them with respect to my key object, which is the stem off the big flower. I'm happy with how everything looks like. So since I'm a big fan of working with groups, I'm going to group all the elements as one big motive. Create the Repeat Tile: now that you have designed your motif, let's put it to work and create our art. The going inspired pattern. Select all elements of your motive and group them to make. Working with it is here goto object pattern make. This will open the pattern tool. If you're not, get familiar with the pattern tool. Let's go through some off the basics of the tool. The first option you have is pattern tile, but I will talk about it just a little later. Next option is to set the name of your pattern. Next, you can choose from different types of tile. The default is grid, and this option will copy your motif up and down and to the left and right. Other options include Break by Rome. The batter motif is repeated horizontally at a given offset, the default being 1/2 under brick offset. You can choose between the range of pretty find offsets, and you can set whatever looks good for your project. Brick by column is similar to bring by room, but the motive is repeated vertically at the given offset. Alternatively, you can choose Hex by column, my hex Bayrou using With and height you can adjust the tile size, which is this brick tango. Here. Here, you can find a link to access them and love them for yourself. - This was my first attempt at the pattern, but I felt that something was missing. So I saved this as fresh and one and then I continued working on my motif second attempt at my pattern. I definitely like this one much, much more. - It's no time to save our patterns. I'm going to show you two different methods of saving the patterns watch. Let's start with Method one on. This is exactly what I showed you during this class in the previous videos.
