1. Preview + Class Project: Hello. I am Daniela, quirky, suing, and I am a self taught illustrator and pattern maker from Bucharest, Romania. One of the things I do in my work is patterns. I love playing around with different shapes, colors and scales, and create visually engaging repeat patterns. In this class, we will focus on using simple shapes like circles, ellipses and try and goes to create intricate through our designs, illustrations and patents. Well, here's basic illustrator tools, such as the shape tools, the Pathfinder tool. The rotate reflect and transform tools to create more complex shapes on the blend tool to embellish and decorate our florals. And because there's inspiration all around you and basically endless types of flowers, you'll never run out of subject matters to drop. So drop your pants and papers open, illustrator and grab those circles, triangles and rectangles. Let's make some beautiful flowers for your class project. Come up with designs is fired by your favorite flowers. If you're finally get difficult to start, go through the class materials where I have set up some wood boards for you and templates with shapes that you can use to start creating your floral designs. Happy making 2. Flower Dynamics: a rose by any other word would smell as sweet in the graphic design. Flowers are easily identifiable. Beat the complex drawing or a dude Oh, on abstract or literal representation, since smell is not something we can transfer through graphic imagery. What makes a flower of flour? When we think of a flower we commonly think of petals, leaves, stems vessels. During this class, you will learn how to break all this element into simple shapes that you can easily recreate with simple illustrator shape tools. No drawing or parental required, just simple observation of shapes. The use of circles, ellipses, rectangles and the Pathfinder tools provided by illustrator Let's Take these daisy. It has multiple layers of battles, but those that began simplify to a basic ellipse, multiplying and overlaying the betters. You can recreate the look and feel of a daisy. Observe the shape of these poppy butts a real life poppy, but has lots of details But simplify and the distracted size, the shape of the but and you are left with a mere oval or two over late overs for blaspheming but crab paper and the passel, and observe the shapes of these flowers. If you were to simplify and your simple shapes to draw these flowers, what shapes would you most commonly use 3. Creating Flower Parts: It's now time to get our hands dirty and start building those shapes. I start by building the pedals for our flowers. I have made the collection of different flowers to illustrate how different battle shapes can be built. So let's get started with those petals. A petal can be a simple as an ellipse, so grab your lips tool and draw simple ellipse such as these days is have oops, no shift required. As I'm not drawing a circle, just a simple ellipse. I'm simply drawing more ellipsis on them were rotating, re sizing and overlaying them on top of my daisy picture. Just demonstrate that you can simplify a daisy, and you can use simple shapes to recreate its feel and look. To achieve this petal shape, crap your lips tool and drawn a lips, or circle the public it the shape by holding out shift and moving the shape horizontally until the two ellipses intersect. Select the two ellipses and open your Pathfinder tool. If you don't have the bath finder to already open, go to window. That's finder, where the to shape selected click on Intersect and there you go. You have created a pedal that looks just like the pedal of a water lily. - You can also go another way to creating this exact shape. So draw simple Ellipse. Ah, selector direct selection tool A on the keyboard. Select the bottom anchor point and convert it to a corner. So convert selected anchor point to corner. At this point, you have raindrop kind of shape. And if you're happy with this shape, or it's a shape that you, me later use them duplicated and live it for later, grab your selection to again. So, like your upper anchor point and converted chill corner. And there you go. You achieved Yeah, a water lily type of pedal. You can tweak your shapes by selecting your top or bottom anchor with the direct selection tool and move up and down by holding on the shift key as well. So you move in a straight line and don't go sideways. You can do the same for here. Middle anchor points, and you can play around with the shapes until you get the pedal ship that you're looking for. You can use the shapes we just created. Two constructor leaves us well, but since leaves will be the focus of my next class, the second in this series. I one going too many specifics. At this point, A nice addition to your flower shapes would be adding stems, stamens or buds. Grab your line segment tool to create a simple stem. Make sure you switch from felt to stroke and draw a straight line by holding shift. Ask them can be a simple straight line. You can also go for the Ark tool to create rounded stems. I always create these upside down, and then I need to reflect them. I'm gonna grab these two steps and I'm gonna reverse them, and they rotate them by holding shift key. Or, if you want more complex stems, you can also grab the pan tool. If you wish to create Cipel's for your flowers, you can go about this in different ways. You can create a simple ellipse. Align your supple, enjoys them. Make sure both your shapes are expanded. You can do this by going to object, expand, expand Phyllis joke and united two shapes by going to Pathfinder. Unite drawn the lips. Draw a rectangle above their lips, select both sheeps, go to past finder and click on minus front. That means that the rectangle shape will be it's obstructed from your lips. You can use this simple, as is with a straight light, or you can add it to your curvy stems. Sectoral shapes Make sure there are expended and then you night, it's them. In CEPAL, you can use this method to create different looking stems. I love adding buds to my floral designs, so grab your lips tool and drawn ellipse comes copy. Paste their lips by selecting it a hitting control C on your keyboard and control F to paste it in front. We're gonna change the color so you can see better what I'm doing. Drawn other lips on top of the first ones. Make sure this is lips is a longer as the first ones, but not as wide so that go through shapes and make sure they are aligned. Select one of the first ellipses and the last the lips go to your path. Find their tools in truth minus front, and there you go. You have created poppy, but change the colors appropriately. - You think the petal shapes you created previously you can add for right. It's your designs by making small buds. Try some of the following shapes you think the shapes and any other can think of and create. Let's go to the next video, where we will put the sheets together to create actual for hours. 4. Creating Flower Shapes: Now that you have created your basic shapes for the battles, believe systems, it's time to put them all together. Let's start with creating the simple Corolla, such as daisies and some flowers. Have grab a battle you previously created or drawn from scratch. I'm going for a pointy kind of pedal. I'm going to trick a little bit the shape like we did in the last video. I'm going to ho tape the shape horizontally, complete the pedal by holding out, shift and drag with the right battle. Selected right click and go to transform. Reflect Make sure preview is a neighbor and reflected vertically so the two pedals are facing each other. The more distance you have between the pedals, the less overlap in pickles you have and vice versa, depending on your rooted and go as well Select both battles read, click and go to transform No cake X. Your preview res enabled type in your angle. I usually go for 15 30 or 45 degrees and you wait a sub multiple 0 360 degrees hit copy. To make a copy of the two panels with the shape selected, click on Control the on your keyboard. This combination will reproduce your last command. So keep hitting control day until your flower Corolla is complete. Select oh petals and group dump for easier management You can know ad the inside of the flower by drawing a simple circle Gonna blanket jello and I'm gonna align everything horizontally and fulla We have created a simple Corolla such as these days is in the right hand half let's know draw a flower such as a chrysanthemum or a succulent rebel petal We're simply build one from scratch duplicated and rotated with both battle selected right click and go to transform and click on Rudy You gotta let the ankle beset to 30 degrees and hit Copy Use control the shortcut until you reach a complete circle Select old barrels and group them by using the shortcut control G on your keyboard. Copy the group and based it in front by hitting control, See and then control F With the second group selected, I am going to resize it by holding ship than all and simply dragging. I am going to rotate the group for more variety, gonna use a different color just a short different for years. Repeat the process a couple of times until you get the look. You want that, UM, you can use this process to create flowers such as chrysanthemum, succulents or dahlias. Let's have a go at another type of flower drop. It'll of your own choice. Select the pedal, read quick and go to transform. Transform each. Under this menu, you have additional options than under simple rotate and reflect. Give the scale to 100 both horizontally and vertically. But first, make sure previews enable, so you can see what you're doing. Okay, so give the skill to 100 on the move options. Give them to their is your big self both horizontally and vertically and just modifying the ankle value. Choose an angle to rotate. I'll choose 15 degrees and make sure you select the central bottom restaurants. Points for Euro Tate Tool makes your chance for object is enabled and click copy. Select the horizontal battle again and repeat the above operations. But this time, make sure that you have selected a degree of minus 15. So just out of my not in front of your and go, he talked to make sure you were, uh, You're better. Looks just right. And he's copy. I'm going to add a stem to the flower, so I'm gonna create one like we previously did. I just wanted to select two shapes. Gonna hit minus front j The color. That's let's bigger color. This is it. Yeah, that that's a nice shade of green. Align your shapes, but make sure your puzzles are grouped together. Then select you're shapes and align them. I'm going to create the stem by using the R two. Obviously, I'm doing it upside down, but I'm gonna rotate it in place. We're going to reflect that just to get the look from the picture and hit, OK, Going to rotate the flowers well, going to skillet skillet and just place it in front of the stand, tricking a little bit the sheep. Okay. And there you go 5. Creating Shape Variety: you can just simple operations. The crow Take reflective scale truffle right at your designs. With a limited number of shapes, you can create multiple flowers with different filled and look. Let's use our previously created snowdrop to demonstrate some of these basic principles. We started with a pointed pedal. Ask them and the receptacle By playing with the young girl. We can create a bud when a blossoming flower trying a door, we can adjust the angle and the scale of the pedals to have more variety and authenticity to the shape of our flower. - By reversing the orientation in changing the placement off the receptacle, we get an entirely different flower. How different these two flowers look in the field Sunday tricked the uncle of the Flower Corolla and organization to get different variations of the same flower up color and chains and different layers of petals. Trade volume end up to your flower. These are simple tips and tricks to have more variety to design by only changing basic orientation of the petal or up the flower Corolla. But even taking into consideration what we can do with embellishments, we'll talk about how we can get simple shapes to embellish. Are flowers in the next videos 6. Flower Embellishments: Welcome back during this video, I want to show you how I used one of my favorite tools from illustrator to decorate shapes and designs. I'm talking about the blend tool, a tool that I feel very comfortable is using and that I used extensively for different tasks, such as creating repeat shapes for decoration and embellishment purposes, or even to create color palettes. Short description about the blend toe. If you're not familiar to it already, you can use the plan to tow blend objects, meaning that you create and distribute shapes evenly between two objects. You can blend between two open or closed pats to create a smooth transition between object . You can combine blends of colors to create color transition pallets, or you can even combine blends of colors and objects at the same time. One thing to remember, though, the blend tool is a rahm extensive tool, so it may slow down your computer when using it in combination to complex objects. You can't create blends either with the blend tool by selecting the blend tool from the menu and selecting the two objects that you want blended. The trick care bland goto object blend. Len options enable preview So against you what you're doing and more defined a number of steps. You can also use the make blend command, Select your selection tool and then select the two objects such one blended go to object blend and he'd make. Or you can use the shortcut control on be it a mostly use to treat here blend. Go to the blend options, but I have set a custom shortcut for it, so I'm gonna access it using my keyboard. I will enable preview and tweak around the number A specified steps because I use the blend to us a lot. I even created my own custom shortcuts to create the custom shortcut, go to edit keyboard shortcuts, select illustrated defaults and go under menu commands. Expand object search from the blend tools, and you can see here the default shortcuts for make and release. To add a new shortcut, simply select the command. Select the button under shortcut and simply type in your key combination. As I said, I have to shortcuts that I saved. They expand and replace spine. They have saved this set and given it and your name. So under object blimp, you can see my two custom commands. Control off that for blend options and control all eight free place spine. If you type in a key combination that is already in use, for example, control all that for reverse spine, you will be prompted. We didn't know this, that there is a conflict between shortcuts and you can modify appropriately. If you're happy with your new shortcuts, save your new shortcut set. So this is my shortcut, said, which added For the blend tools, let's go through some examples and see how the bland two bricks Ah, so grab your shaped tool and draw around them shape. I'm gonna draw a circle I'm gonna duplicated by hitting out and shift on my keyboard So I'm gonna drag it in a straight line. A selector to object and blend. You can go to object, blend, make or hit control. I'll be the shortcut by default. Illustrator calculates the optimum number of steps to create the small color transition. So, in order to control the number of steps or distance between steps, go to blend the options Coach objects blend blend options. Kid preview to see what you're doing. I'm gonna lower the number to something like three. Ah, So the number of specified steps three refers to the number of objects between the two objects that you have already created. So in total, you'll have five objects. It's OK. The blend tool is the life tool, meaning that if you modify the objects within the bland, um, that modification will update the bland as a whole. Some kind of public double click this objected. I'm gonna make it smaller on As you can see, by the fold, all objects within the blend have been modified. A neat trick I like about the blend tool is the fact that I can use it to create a smooth color transition, which I usually save us a swatch and use for my illustration or patterns. So to do this, I'm gonna grab it. I drop or two I on the keyboard gonna select one of these colors I'm gonna apply to last circling the blend as you can see, the whole bland waas modified. So what I do now is create a swatch with this blend. First you need to expand. The blend can do that by going to object, bland and expand expanding a brand. We'll divide the blend into distinct objects which you can add it individually like any other objects. So now if you go within the bland and if I modified one of the objects, it's only gonna modify that particular object and that the blood itself, because we expanded the blend. On the other hand, releasing a blend means that remove the new object and restored the original object. So select your object. Go to Swatch hit new color crook. Give it the name custom. Make sure selected artwork selected and hit. OK, As you can see, you have a new color swatch group and you can use this in your art. Rick, Let's create the blend with the custom spine like a circle, for example. So first, draw your shapes. I will go for this time. So I'm gonna draw a small start and I'm going to duplicate you. Get que selected to objects and create a blend. Tweak the number of steps speed between between the object going by going to blend options . I will use my shortcut. Gonna said this to something like four. Okay, so by the fold illustrator will create a bland across a straight line. You can't see the bath here, but we want to change the spine to a circle. So grab your shape, tool and draw a circle. It can be either a stroke or a fill. It doesn't actually matter. Select your blend and the circle and go to object. Blimp, Replace Fine. So as you can see, which is the glam path from a street line to a circle. But somehow the blend doesn't quite look like you expect it, does it? There's like a missing star around here, So to fix this hit on Drew Okay, grab your direct selection tool. Select your circle and select any anchor point and go to cut a path at selected anchor Point rep your selection toe again. Select your blend and the circle and go to object blend. Replace Fine. That, um, looks better, doesn't it? As you can see, each start is aligned to the to the page. And if you want to teach this and have the stars align to the path to the circling me, you can do that by going to blend options. With the plant elected, I will use my shortcut. He'd preview to see what we're doing and a switched orientation from a line to page to align to path. Click somewhere else. Okay, Nothing seems to have happened, but I think that is because we have a small number of steps. I'm gonna make this one bigger. Okay, Now it looks better. So I'm gonna switch between the two Korean station styles so you can see the difference aligned to page that this is the alignment to page. Yes. You can see each star is aligned to to the page. And if I had a line to path, each star is aligned to the circle path. He's okay. And there you go. This is how you can use the bland tool with the custom spine. I've also included some exercises you can do with the blend tool in the student area. So you get the hang of it. In the meantime, follow me in the next video. Where will build the flower from scratch to the last adornment? 7. Create Intricate Flower part 1: it's time to put together a flower, guys. We'll use all the tools demonstrated in the previous videos to create simple shapes into get adornments and finally, elegant results. But start by creating the pedals for our flower, I'm going to simply draw two circles that intersect and their intersection will be my pedal going to duplicate the shape because I'm gonna probably use it for my leaves, So I'm gonna put it somewhere. Oh, right. It doesn't bother me. Let's take the peril and tweak its shape a little bit by drank, dragging the anchor points using the direct selection tool. Okay, looks great. Duplicate the pedals and create a flower Corolla. You can tweak around the pedals and make them smaller or larger, or any any way you want them to be. Let's create a back layer to add some volume. Tour flower. Play around with colors to create sometime. Mash into the flower. It's the same color. Okay, great. Looks great. Let's create the stem and the leaves to our design. So as a stem gonna just draw simple rectangle. Just gonna be long and narrow. Can they use a shade of green? Okay. And to add supports. Two more were of sel our That's great vessel gonna hit minus front on my pathfinder chills . I'm gonna get this shape. It's a line. These two great. Some like them AM unite them to create one shape instead of two. Okay, Looks it didn't select Open. I was there. Okay, let's add the flowers. Uh, believes not The floors gonna rotate it slightly in the alliance To my to my stump, let's duplicate the pedal radically go to transform and go to reflect because I want to reflect and duplicated at the same time. Yes, vertical reflect. I'm copy. Super so that's it. Creating our basic shape. And it's no time to start the fun part with this, which is creating our flower. First, I want to add the inside of the flower so I'll draw a circle and simply place in between the layers of petals. So grab the shape, told their lips and draw a circle. Okay. And I want the inside of the flower to somehow come out behind the front. Sapporo's So I'm gonna select my friend battles and my stone and I am going Teoh, bring them to front. Right click transform all right click. Arrange. Sorry and go to bring to front. And there you go. You have inside of the flower, which kind of comes out between the layers off battles. I'm just moving around the pedals to create the look I'm looking for. It's true accountability shape of our stem. Quit. I will start with the inside of the flower, so I'm gonna sue me. Double click the circle to isolated. Okay, so I want to use the blend to and create a color transition. So with shape selected should control C control F and create a smaller circle. Just in front of the of the big one is the color to white. Some, like boots or cost and hit control. I'll be for the make blend tool. I see that it has used my previous settings. So if you go to the blend options, you can see that there are two steps between the big circle and the small one. So this one, this one. But I'm rather happy with this result. It actually looks great. So I'm gonna hit ok and not do any other modifications. Okay. Next, I want to draw some spikes around the circle, so I'm gonna draw on the lips and gonna change the color too. Oh, something that you can see when the draw really really small. Oh, it seems that I waas within the blend Yeah, I'm ah have forgot Teoh expand my blends. So as I said previously, the blend tool his life too. So any change you do within the blade, the blend it will automatically be, um, distribute across the entire blend. So because I'm I haven't expanded and I'm in the blend. When I created their lips, it actually created the plant. So I'm gonna delete the shape. Gonna go back to to my layer one. Okay, I'm going to select the inside of the circle, go to object, blame and expense. So now when I double click, this is just a regular group. It's not a blend anymore. Can individually move and Jane shapes without any consequence to the other shapes. Okay, so let's try this again. Creates a really small a lips. Go zoom in so I can see what I'm doing. I'm gonna duplicate it so that both shapes and hit control all be for the bland too. Okay, Zoom in. Gonna select the outer circle. Gonna hit control C control F two based in front. You can't see that I've done anything because it has based in front. But if I moved the circle, you say they're both of them. Okay, So So, like the circle bath. Select your direct selection tool. Select one anchor point and go to cut path at selected anchor points. Okay, grab your selection tool. So, like, the blend and the circle, And he'd again unsure. Out is it? Which is my shortcut for the old blend options. Sorry. Okay, this one is the one for the bland spine change Bland spine. Okay, go within the blend Options if you increase the number of steps. Okay. I want to play around video orientation. Uh, at this point, by the fourth, my blend is aligned to the page. But I want to change this and make it a line to Beth Super. I'm gonna increase the number of steps because they will be visible Onley in this area because the inside of the flower is actually behind the layers off battles. So I'm gonna increase it up. This looks about right. Okay. Super. It looks great. I'm gonna just change the color to make it slightly more visible. Okay. And exit the group. Great, actually. Want to do one more thing? Gonna Ah, so let the bland I'm gonna arrange it Ascended back bread. So the shark shark it is control and break it. I'm gonna move it behind the group. Okay? Make sure to expand the blends ago Job, dick. Blend and expand. Okay, quit. Looks great. Let's move on to the pedals. Going to start by abolishing this. Write him the battle. Gonna duplicate it because I'm gonna need to build a path out of it. Okay, Grab your ellipse. Draw a small circle. Gonna change the color So it's visible. Duplicate select control out. Be So after creating the blend. Gonna some selecting the shape of the battle with my direct selection tool. Gonna select one anchor point and I'm gonna cut it because I'm gonna use it as you spine for the blend. Oops. Okay. It's increased the number of steps. Looks fine. Great. I'm gonna expand it now. I'm gonna line it with the pedal. So So, like the battle. So, like, the blend click again The pedal Go to transform a virtual line. Sorry, I am aligned in your shape, but you're blend selected. Send it one level backwards. So behind the distance. Okay, I'm happy with the overall look. So I'm gonna replicate this process, and I'm gonna embellished some of the other battles. That looks great. I'm pretty happy with how my flower coral looks like. So I'm gonna stop at this point next. I'm gonna, uh, embellish the step. Gonna do it rather simple in a rather simple way. So I'm just gonna, uh, create a circle. Bland. Okay. So, control, I'll be to create the blend, go to blend options and treat the number of steps. Sure, that looks fine expended. And the change the color. Maybe a darker shade of green or the action gonna go for the green of the leaves. Select both the embellishment and the stem Click again the stem. Go to a line. I am align Vertical e actually going to move it down. Okay, Super So no. Let's, uh, creed the leaves 8. Create Intricate Flower part 2: some off. Let's create the leaves. Let's start with the first leave. Gonna double click to well, isolated going to copy it and place it in front. Gonna change it Teoh stroking and can go have a color that you can see Select your dining selection tool and cut the path at the edge Anchor points. Okay, so basically, now you have two different Absurd. You have two different. That's okay. So select the first path in the 2nd 1 Hit control. I'll be And there you go. Just look at what a beautiful blend you have created with open paths instead of closed ones like we did with the shapes previously. So I'm gonna add more aligns. Looks great. You don't Okay, coach, object. Blend and expand. And then I'm gonna change the structure. Different kind of of green. Okay. Started with the first leave. So for my second leaf, I want to go for a look. Such as this one. I want half of the leave to have some radio kind of embellishment. Like the circles. Do you see? They go in the radio type of sheep. Okay, so we're gonna do this lank like this first. I like to work in an isolated mode. Wrap your polar grid. Ah, tool and draw a big, big, big polar grid. So, like, number of circles, Just many or as little as you want. I think this works for me. Okay, so is it big enough? It should be gonna place it. Gonna struggle to find you want to place the younger point that the bottom anchor point off the leaf in the centre off the polar greed. Okay. Oh, so next to let's just create our circle embellishment. Gonna make the circle black so you can actually see it. So select both circles and create the blend good in order to use the polar grid. As is you as a as a spine for the blend tool. It needs to be broken down into individual paths. So it's just like the bowler grid and the blend, and you go to object, blend and replace spine. You'll see that it's not active. So what we need to do select the polar grid and group it okay and see that you can access now each individual, uh, circle. Great. Okay, church. If this look, Tim embellish only half of the leaf basically gonna work on Lee in this, uh, courtroom. So to make my life easier, I'm gonna delete these 3/4 so grab your stomach too. Select half of the parts. Click delete. I just wanted to leave the response and these ones Okay, clean up. Great. So we only have half a record of the polar grid. God.
