About This Class

In this class we will cover some basic technics for illustrating in Adobe Photoshop:

  1. using brushes (ball illustration part 1)
  2. applying blending modes (ball illustration part 2)
  3. combining geometric shapes (ball illustration part 3)
  4. adding layer effects (ball illustration part 4)

And then I'll show my 3 different approaches of creating an illustration:

  1. Using a photo reference (banana illustration)
  2. Using geometric shapes (drum illustration)
  3. Freehand drawing (treehouse illustration)

1. 0 Intro : Oh, hello. Welcome to the glass about creating administrations for chiller in by 80 And I'm a graphic designer interface developer and a father and a professional straight there. I really feel competent in my career, working on many different projects from designing visual developing applications. Right now, I'm working on my toe patients on. Actually, it's a future about about it is based on a true story. In this class, we will cover help to choose and use the right brush for your project. How to apply different Blanding mounts, how to combine simple geometric shapes to create complex one and how to add layer effects to achieve more realistically. And then I will show you my three different approaches in illustrates. So let's start. 2. 1 Choosing & Using Brushes: If you're familiar with photo shop, you probably know that it comes with a big range of brain cell brushes. But if you try to use those brushes, you probably noticed that they won't give you very artistic results. In fact, many of them might look like a very cheap simulation of the real thing. So to achieve by the results, I'm suggesting you to search the Internet for a free set of vertical or brushes. Pay attention to find the one which is free for personal and commercial years. When you find that set, go here into preset manager and load that set. I won't be doing this because I already have enough brushes. Now, if you choose one of those brush heads, you might notice it doesn't really look like real brush. It looks like a stamp made out of a couple of strokes or something that was once in a paper . Some attempt off on art. This one is not even cleaned enough. You can see direct, angular form around those strokes, and if you try to use it as a brush, it won't give you the results you might expect. But there some tweaks that might be done to enhance that. Okay, First thing. Let's go to the shape dynamics and let's increase the angle. Jitter. Now every stem will be directed in its own angle. Anti to look a little bit more chaotic. Next leads, decrees the spacing. Now we won't percent those stamps as a separate elements, but it will all be merged into some kind of stroke. And the last thing Let's go to the transfer and said Control to pen pressure. If you don't have a graphic tablet, you can simulate this thing by decreasing the capacity. And you can draw with your mouth multiple times over the same space and simulate that same thing. Okay, now that we have a dynamic brush, what's use it? Really chant Li Little noticed that a texture is starting to appear. My imaginary source off light is almost always in the upper left corner. So if the light comes out of here, this area will be lighter and this area will be darker. So make this parked much darker. Okay, And now for President X button. I'm switching the foreground and background colors with the white collar. I will enhance those white areas over here, So this thing already looks kind of like a sphere. Well, maybe more like X spherical cloud 3. 2 Combining Shapes: the problem with the previous method is obvious, like off sharpness. So two figures that we will use geometric shapes. Let's be short that this drop down menu is set on the shape. Shape will create a vector based shape, while the bed will just create ah ha line around it and pixels will create a rest arised version off that shape. So shape is the best option. Now, if we want to create a circle, we just have to press the shift key. This will preserve the proportions. Okay, Now let's put the circle underneath that shading layer, and we can use create clipping mask, so Onley part off the texture that is covering the circle will appear. We can change the color by double clicking, and let's choose some vivid orange color. Okay, now let's create a beach ball. To do that will have to create a couple more Alps is still we need to hold the shift key not because we want to create another circle, but because we want to create a shape on the same layer as the one we already bean using. So let's do it like this for now. Okay? And now, with this arrow and the arrow keys on the keyboard. We can move that shape and then by holding option, we can duplicate it. Okay, Now let's still have to duplicated three times on the first layer. They'll take this circle and make and intersection so it will show on Lee the stars. It are intersecting. And this one well, sir, trucked. So the 1st 1 just covers this quarter off the ball. Florida's 2nd 1 We'll use the similar matter. So this one will be intersecting and thats one will subtracting. Okay, DoubleClick Let's change the color too kind of green, but not to green. Little bit Last saturated. Okay, this one might be a something a little bit reddish Okay. And on the 3rd 1 will select this one, and they will say said trucked. And this one village also some trucked. So it just have this little triangle. And obviously we'll have to make one more Copley. And on this one, we'll delete everything. Okay, this one shows the whole ting. Let's make this little triangle with some kind of shade of blue, okay? And we have a beatable Let's put it texture on it 4. 3 Blending Layers: While it might be enough, in some cases, just two superimposed raster shading over the vector graphic. In most cases, there's much more that can be done. As we can see, this grey shading is significantly decreasing the saturation off the vector graphic. To improve the blend off those two layers or group of layers, we can change the Brandon Belt. The blend modes are different ways off, combining two or more layers into a picture. They're grouped by the way they affect the layers beneath him. First group is normal. It is affected only by different levels of transparency. The next group will produce dark results. The turtle produced lighter results. The fort will increase the contrast, and the last two groups produce the results that they're too eccentric for this kind of illustrations. So let's choose. Multiply as we can see, it only affects the darker areas. While it completely ignores the lighter areas, little duplicates this layer, and this time, instead of multiply, will choose screen. As we can see, screen Onley affects the lighter areas. What is completely ignores the darker areas, but in combination, they produce much higher contrast. Well, let's duplicate again. The 3rd 1 will use is old early. You can see overlays combination off darker and lighter all in one. But in this case, it is not enough because, as I already said, this particular shading has a very low level off a pass ity. So this is why we're going to use all tree of them now. This looks really too much, so we'll decrease the level of capacity. I'm suggesting you to experiment with blend modes. Each of them has its own style. But just remember, normal, darker, lighter and contrast. Did you? So you have to know. 5. 4 Adding Layer Effects: the last method I'm about to show you he's heading layer effects. Didn't X is this panel by double clicking the right side off the layer name? Don't click on the name. Click on the right side off the panel. Now you have to be very careful when you're using layer effects because they have bean abuse so many times in the past, especially the 1st 1 battle and ambles, we need to adjust the depth and the size with the size off the shape were affecting. We can add a little bit of softness, and we must align the source of light with the one we were imagining while we were painting the initial shading. Now, as we can see the height motors on the screen, we can tweet that by creating a little bit warmer life tones and little bit colder shadows . OK, next one stroke. I think we won't need it then in the shadow. Since this is a bowl and other hole in the paper, they don't really need an inner shadow. But instead of using the multiply blending moat, we will use screen mold, and now it looks like some kind of back light. The good thing about the inner shadow. He's the ability off adding in the noise. So if we add noise a little, have the additional texture on top of it. Okay, I'll decreased your person just a little bit. Inner glow is very similar to it, except it doesn't allow you to change the position. Let's keep the seven Koehler overlay disorder color overlay does, and we can add some Grady int. What? Choose simplest one and let's choose radio and we can put it on the right position over here, make it a little bit bigger and creates the adversity on blending. One was choose overly. Okay, great. Now you can choose better. Normally, it'll create additional texture, and there is a pretty good range off built in textures. But for this kind of surface, like a beach ball, I won't be using better Novalee, because beach balls are pretty smooth. So uncheck this. We won't use any outer glow or drop shadow because I'm actually building assets so these things will be done in post production. So this is the image. Read the effect and we don't we can see that effects did a pretty significant impression off volume So, as you can see, a quick, blurry sketch blended right away with the geometric shape and some layer effects can provide a really quick solution for achieving natural organic look when they're creating illustrations. 6. 5 Banana: Probably the easiest way of creating illustrations is by using a photo reference. By dropping an image into a document, we can automatically rotate and scale it to feed the canvas. I'll start by creating in the lips and then adjusting existing and adding new anchor points to create a shape of the banana president, be on your keyboards to reach the pento and A or shift A to reach the direct select to which allows you to manipulate the existing anchor points omitted of drawing over a photo or a still image from the movie is called Rata Skopje, and if you haven't seen waking life yet, you should definitely check it out. I'll leave the link in the description. Now that we have a seal it, we'll start adding some volume to it by applying layer effects. I've learned to use this technique in late two thousands under the heavy influence of Apple Scale. Murphy is, um, I really enjoyed those aesthetics and when, in 2000 and 13 the IOS seven came out, I was deeply disappointed, and I felt a little bit betrayed. Even today, I feel a little bit dramatised because of it. Now that we have a plastic banana, we can start that in detail, stewed. And since bananas don't have magic Tito's, it is not a very difficult process. The next phase is shading. Depending on the accuracy we want to achieve. It might be a pretty long process. The more layers we create, the better it will look. And since this is not a very interesting process, you can speed up or fast forward unless you enjoy watching me struggle with it. It is also relaxing and almost therapeutic kind of work, so you might enjoy it when you'll be doing it. Detained perfect until it's in. Perfect. As you can see, it is pretty close. Already. The greatest advantage of this method is also its own worst disadvantage. The object will look too realistic and since we're creating illustrations for Children, this is not the most desirable property. A little bit off greeny shades. We can remove the surplus of green by erasing the edges with a soft razor pan, and that's it. 7. 6 Drum: The second approach is using geometric shapes, which we already covered, but this time it's gonna have a twist. Quite literally. I won't bother you with details. I'm creating a toy drum, which is basically cylinder. I'll add some volume to it by applying layer effects, and then I'll create texture for it, which is also based on geometric shapes. First, I'll create a rectangle, and then I'll remove one angle and turn it into a triangle. Now I'll move the tango into the middle. You can find the middle, just dragged the guidelines from the ruler, and we have a middle. Let's increase the contrast. Impressing commanded t to scale it in half and no by cold in option key. I'm dragon to triangle to duplicate it. I'm repeating the process now. Did they have a four triangles? I'll press shift options. Command E. This will create a new layer with the rest arise image of those four triangles and I'm using the effort Gold Sheer. Here comes a twist. I'm pressing commenced E again to scale the newly created texture to fit the drum right click warp to rev the texture around the cylinder, changing if you a bit. And no, I'm creating the rims by copying the base of the drum and changing the cooler and textures . Let's change the hue again to achieve something a little bit warmer. This will be fine. Next phase shading. And now let's make it a little bit less geometric by manually dragging the strings from the top of base to the bottom base. If you want to draw a straight line with brush, you can simply click at one end, hold the shift key and then click at the other end. And if you can't draw a line because it doesn't lay naturally, you can simply press are and rotate the canvas in the direction that feeds your hand and as the drama illustration. 8. 7 Treehouse: the last approach free can drawing is the hardest, but at the same time the easiest. Because there is no restrictions. The only restriction is your imagination. And, of course, your ability to express yourself. So I'm starting by creating a rough sketch off three house. I'm going for that crooked appearance, like the haunted houses from the horror movies. I'm ed ing direct angles, and then I'm distorting them in warping them to create more organic forms like the one of the sketch. I won't go to the details. There's nothing much the comment. It took me almost another to create this illustration and still bring along. So if you want, you can speed up and see the final illustration, - the the all right, and this is how you create a tree House illustration. 9. 8 Outro: underdone ever done. Thank you for speaking until the end of this class. I hope you enjoyed the creative process. And I'm hoping that you're satisfied with the results. Please share them with me. I'm looking forward to see them by
