About This Class

In this quick After Effects class I would like to show you a very popular technique of giving images additional depth (known as the 2.5D or 2D to 3D effect). Our project will be turning one selected picture into

something like this:

ab465d45

In the class we will create fun things, for example:

  • Search and use a free photo (for example at Unsplash.com)
  • Edit out the object you want to give perspective to in Photoshop
  • Add Position / Scale / Rotation keyframes in After Effects
  • Add Color Control layers to give it a cinematic feel
  • Render out the file and create a GIF for showcase!

All in a fun atmoshphere and professionaly edited lectures. If you are interested and would like to learn a new technique - hop on and let's go! :)

1. Introduction: Hello and the Hartley Welcome in this after effects class, I would like to show you a great workflow how to create a parallax effect on image. At first, I'll briefly explain the theory behind the products effect and what it is all about. Then we'll quickly select a photograph and edit it in photo shop. Once we have the necessary objects separated, we will go straight into after effects to create the actual design, the actual parallax movement. Afterwards, I'll show you a few color correction tips and tricks, which you can apply to any composition and the image any video you are editing, the end result will look like that, and it will be a really fun product and tutorial. This technique is well known, but it's also very popular and it's awesome to know about it. So if you want to learn how to create that in adobe after effects jumping and let's start working 2. Theory: hither today. I wanted to talk with you a little bit about Parallax. So you may be familiar with this definition, this topic or you may not, but basically it is supposed to bring the user experience to a new interactive level off online viewing. Now, as you can see, para Lex, especially in Web design in design and overall in in the online world, was gaining popularity at about 12 4013. And since then we are seeing a growing trend in website videos and designs using this technique. Now this is off course, nothing new. Parallax scrolling was used in gains in older things we've done and what actually is parallax, because once you understand what it is, you'll have no troubles using in it your designs, or at least understanding what you see now Para Lex, as I have done, some research is coming from astronomy, and it's basically just a perspective and and distance we have off certain objects. Now. The way parallax is used in astronomy is to determine how far away a certain star planet or object might be. The waste astronomers that observe it is by comparing two states of a planet and the state off the distance planet on how far it moves. So if, for example, we have our earth, our earth circles around the sun. So if we compare to states of our earth and then we compare how far the second object that moved in comparison with Earth while hurt bring here and er being here, the more it moves, the closer it is to you. The simplest as you can do, is to put one off your fingers far away from your face as far as you can reach. Now put the second finger very close to your face and close your left eye. Close the right. I close the left crows the right, the closer the closer finger wiggles from left to right Very strongly. The further away the finger is, the less it wiggles. So this is parallax effect. But enough of teary enough about astrophysics because the thing designers did, they used this kind of effect to to bring a new level of depth websites. Now I have a few examples here. This is an example website which was created with with the parallax scrolling effect. And as I browse to the website as I go down. As you can see, some things seem as they would stay in place. Something seems as they would move and wanting move slower. One thing moves faster and this creates this little parallax effect that we can observe and it's really a pleasure to see. Another example from a Porsche car is images in the background. Stand still while I have scrolled the website. So in general I'm scrolling the website down, but yet their background off the website stays in place and this is another example off parallax. This website, however, stays more true to the actual explanation off parallax effect because as I move my mouse here around, you can see the foreground object and the background objects move a different speed. This is a perfect example off the parallax scrolling because perhaps those gentlemen move a little bit quicker, but this moves a little bit slower since it far away in the back room. I want to show you one more example which I found as I was doing this research. I I don't remember a song that I did like a few years ago that still a cool song with apart from that. I was very amazed at the time when it got released in 2010 to the video off Kanye West's Power Video. And as you can see, it's a perfect example Off Peril X. At the time being, I had no idea how this was possible. How did they do? This is such a nice and simple effect how this was recorded. Now I do realize that it was a picture or video off him. This was graphically designed. This was graphically designed. That background was designed and everything is moving a little bit separately. It's being resized, it's moving. And this creates this parallax effect, which is very nice for a reviewer, because we see like a tree d like separate layers. Or but still it's one duty image. Okay, at this point, enough of theory. Let's head into after effects and start designing something with a parallax effect. 3. Editing the photograph: hello and welcome in this lesson. At first, let us start with the simplest part of Lex usage and the most popular parallax usage in adobe after effects, which is heading perspective and depth to a photograph. Now this is a very well known technique already, but it still looks cool. And if you get how to create this, you'll be able to create this in any other composition you are working with. So the basics in photo shop would be you need to separate the background from your actual object. I have a very simple photograph where the person will be very easy to separate and two to replace, because we have very simple background Carlos Year. So let me show you. My layer is unlocked and I can go straight into the work What I'll do. I'll select my quick selection tools, and I would just drag it over the person you can see it automatically snaps very quickly. So the work is really simple here. Maybe the Beanie needs a little bit more attention. I'll come closer with my control space and clicking left, right. Okay, what they need to do, I need to select a little bit more off her. Okay, like this. If you go too far away, you can always press the left old and you can erase it again. Okay, I've raised it. Perfect. No, I press control. X control shift TV to place her in the same place. And as you can see, I have this little person in front of me separated. Okay, Now I would need to fill out the space. What's great in photo shop? He does everything for us. Now. I need to select the background layer. Okay. The back road layer is selected. I take my rectangular marquee tool. I just mark this area and I go to edit filled, and I feel it content, aware what this does. It replicates the pixels around here and its first of pixels for you. Now, as you can see, you could barely notice that something was here. Off course. If you would like to be 1 million% precise, you would justice a little bit. Here. You could eventually take the blur tool and blurt over. You could select the brush healing tool to heal this over. But we don't really need this because we'll use this background used this person and perfect. Now we can do it two ways. We saved this Photoshopped file or we safe. This is a PNG, a sage APEC, and we use those boat images. Now let's stay professional. Let's stay full adobe mode and I'll save a Photoshopped file with those two layers. Okay, I'm ready. Now we can head over finally, to our beloved aftereffect. See you in the next lesson where we'll continue to work on this image. 4. Play with position and scaling: Okay. Welcome back. Let us that into the design. Let me create a new composition. I need to change my settings toe full. HD 30 frames is ok. And we just need about 10 seconds or any time you want 10 seconds would be okay. And by no means I'm the creator of this tutorial. I don't want to take credit for it, but I will appreciate if you will watch this class. Tell me what you think about it. And if you would like to continue explore other things about Parallax design which we could do with video and with aftereffect staying there focused on this one work I'll import by PSD into after effects. Because I need to work with both layers. I will select a visible layer styles. I'll import this essay composition. Okay. And I have my person come pretty now. I can go into here, take those layers and just copy and paste them into the composition I've prepared. Okay, let me close the person. And what do we have here? We have the person and we have to Backroom. Amazing. Now this would be the basis for our parallax scrolling. Now what? We need to do. We need to Reese Ice and move Boat stinks. Now, how do you want to resize? It will be up to you. But the most basic thing would be to make the person a bit bigger in the big world. Less bigger because the person is closer to us. You remember the person would be the finger close to us, which wiggles more. And the back roads would be the object far away which moves just slightly. Okay, so let me take the person. I'll press s like scale and Oprah's shift Pete like position. I will keep frame both values because most likely I work with both of them on the time spent off 10 seconds. What do you want to happen? 10 seconds later? We definitely want this person to be a bit bigger. You can do it with the control key. It will not gain a smart size. Okay, 100 persons fairly weak to the entire screen. I will make this fit, but I wanted to grow 20% Okay, 20% over 10 seconds. That's not very much letting to the same for the background shift, P press s and for a shift peak. Okay, now the scale off the background as I go forward shouldn't be as much as 20%. I think like 5% will be enough. So we have this first parallax item and I think it would be cooler if the background actually would go outwards. So instead of making it bigger, I will make it smaller. I shouldn't, but I will do. I will start to it 120%. So it's really big at the beginning and it will go smaller towards the end. Now let me preview If this is okay for the viewer, it definitely is because I am the person deciding on how this will look and no boundaries are here set. So they wanting more, I would like to adjust this personal. It is This is a bit too simple because it just scales towards me. And at the end, I would like the person to be maybe a bit more in the middle. So we have our position, key frames. I'll go forward and I will make the position Sorry Expedition a bit to the right side. I only we do the same to the background image, the background image should move a bit to the left side. We see the background image is not big enough. Okay, now it would be OK Now the background goes left, the person goes a little bit to the right. I think it's not enough. Let's take the position further away. Okay? Now it will be really more. Yeah, This looks a lot more interesting. Now I can take those key frames closer. I think this wouldn't take as long you see now the products is different and I think the person should be smaller. A swell. If you prefer to make it like that, it could stay like this. Now the person was the 1st 1 Okay, I would start to scale with 120 going further and make it 100%. Okay, this looks really nice. Very nice movement. Maybe a bit too quick. And the position is too far to the middle. Let's go back of it, OK? And one more adjustment I eventually would do would be opening treaty for this person layer and making a small rotation. Of course. Not like that wire rotation. Why not? Okay. Why negative 10% go forward and make it positive. 10%. Okay, Now, this is how this effect turned out. We have our little scaling. We have our little movement. And as we drank it over the entire composition, the entire video, it looks really cool. It's a slow, steady movement and what I would still do here, I would do some design adjustments to make this image look better. Let's head over to the next lesson, and we'll try to make a little bit more out of this design. 5. Leave a Review, Please: Hey, it would be extremely helpful for this class if you go to the Review tab and click on leave a review and write something there. If you don't see this button yet, you need to watch a few more lectures and it will become available. Sculpture now requires that classes have recent reviews on them. So it would help me greatly. You just click here, you tell if you'd like to class or not, and you write a simpler view and click Submit. I would be very obliged if you can do this right now. Thank you so much and see you soon. 6. Image adjustments and color correction: Okay. One thing I know that people make to make everything more cinematic and dramatic is to make Black Borders here on the top and bottom side. Now, first thing I would do I would create a new rectangle or a new solid. Let's press control. Why? A black solid? Perfect. The black solid is on the top side. I'll take my mask tool, and I'll create a mask like this. Double click V and double quick. Okay, make it smaller. Here. This should be enough. Okay, Inverted. Perfect. We have our black bars ready. Very nice. Now, I could think off a vineyard around the entire image to make it a bit better. Yeah, I don't really like the black marks. Now, a vineyard would add some more graphical elements to do to this object. Now, how to create a vineyard? There are so many options off doing it. But I could, for example, work with the mask. I will create a rectangle. Let me make a big rectangle off course. The rectangle should be black. Now, on the left side, I'll double click. I will click and hold. Sorry, I looks like my lips too. And like DoubleClick the ellipse. Well, you can see an ellipse has appeared, but I wanted it to be a mask. So I click on the lips. Either select tool creates mask and I'll double click. Perfect. I have an ellipse here in the middle of the screen. What we have to do again is to select inverted, to invert it. Now we can open the mask and we have mask, feather, weaken, feather out the mask and you can see what happens. We have a little vineyard around this area. Now, if you want to change this venue to be bigger, not so much centered. You can press V double click and make the mask bigger with shift as left control key. Okay? No. You think this vineyard looks okay? I have close this down and I don't call it V yet. Okay, We have our vineyard now. It would be a matter off style izing and correction effects which we could add like curves like color correction. You can go for yourself and select style eyes and this site upon something like burn filled glass. What do we have? Oh, sec vineyard. So we could use this this effect vignette, But As I said, there are so many options of doing a vineyards. I will definitely want to use em. Curves curse and some color overlay would be great. So I was like red click new adjustment layer. I'll select curves and upon the working with the adjustment layer, I can change the coloristic off this image to make it appear and pop a little bit stronger . It's a bit cold, but I can up the upper tones off this image. Okay, you can see how it looks with and without curves, so we've pumped up a little bit the saturation. We pumped up colors and it looks a bit different now. I would like to stylized it with some color, and this would be also simple. Now these are photo editing things you might want to do or might not want to do. I just want to show you how you could eventually approach this. Create another rectangle or solid. It really doesn't matter. I'll press control why and create a new solid. It can be a black solid. Then I'll select ramp double click on the great in ramp, and I'll select the colors. I would like to be over late over this image. And I do think that I would like to take something blue. One color here, one color here. The second color could be something I like dark blue. Okay, now, once you have dyslexia, all it this color correction, like solid press before Because you want to see moats and under modes, try a few Moz like screen at overlay. It should look really cool. How screen appears to two stroke, let me put it under The Blackmore's screen appears to strong overlay. Yeah, overlay is very interesting, and you can always Presti to lower the opacity so the color isn't so strong. Okay, maybe I'm making this to blue. Let's at some some yellowish colors today to it because I would like to bring some life into this image because it's a bit too cold and you can see I can work with the tones with the colors. And it is a really simple color correction technique. Good. I think it's it's very effective in usage. So we have our CC and what's great about here. We can simply de select it. If we don't like it, I'll close this lesson down. So this lesson was mostly about image adjustments and color correction. 7. Recap and thank you!: O. K. A super quick shoutout and Rick up. What did we do at first? Let me to select everything. So we had the image and this this person here and we made a few key Frings who made position key frames and scale key frames. The most important thing here is that scale key frames. You could work only with the scale if you wanted to make it a very simple parallax effect. But what we did additionally, here we made a very slight rotation on the person, animate a slight position, change on the person toe at a bit more off playfulness and do a few more tanks about it now . Then we jumped in tow color correction, because this image, as it is, looks a bit boring. Now look at this image and after some color corrections, it really gives it the cinematic field. And if you are creating, for example, videos on YouTube and even game videos, explainer videos, no matter which videos, simple color correction techniques are always useful and effective. Now. What we did was heading black bars, I think a vineyard and heading and adjustments kerf layers and additionally color overly now all those things combined look really cool and gave the image the little edge. We need it. Thank you so much for taking part in this module. Let us explore other things in the next ones. If you did like it, please let me know and we'll see it other in next. Similar marshals. Thanks for watching and see you in the next one.
