Baugasm™ Series #5 - Design a Poster with 3D shapes in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop

1. Introduction: Hey, welcome back on another class with the Baugasm series. My name is Vasjen Katro. I'm a graphic and web designer. Some months ago, I started a project called Baugasm, where I design a poster everyday for one year. So I'm posting the posters on Instagram every day, and this class on Skillshare is the fifth one where I'm basically showing you techniques on how I make my posters. On this class, you're going to see how I make this exact poster. You're going to learn how to use Adobe Photoshop and then Adobe Illustrator to create the 3D tube shapes. For this poster, I haven't used a 3D program, so that's the cool part about it because we can create these in Adobe Illustrator in an easier way. I'm pretty sure all of you are going to enjoy this class because there's some really nice techniques I'm showing, and also different ways how to achieve different shapes in Adobe Illustrator and use the 3D tool. I'm really looking forward to get your feedback and also to see your projects. Welcome everyone, and thanks for enrolling on the class. Yesterday poster on Baugasm project was this one and basically I did those 3D doughnuts shaped illustration in a Cinema 4D. But basically we can replicate and do the same in Adobe Illustrator. I know many of you sometimes struggle with having Cinema 4D, so replicating and doing basically something similar to these in Adobe Illustrator might be a good choice and easier for all of you to do. So basically what we're going to do is try to replicate something like this but also I'm going to try to be more unique than this one because yesterday poster was basically this one and I don't want to post something similar to this. So I'm going to show you how to do the doughnuts, but maybe I'm going to go with different shape for the poster for the final one because I'm going to basically post that as today's poster. So the poster, it's going to be the day of 280. I'm just going to go back in Adobe Illustrator and start with something. So here I have created a document in Adobe Illustrator, I think it's in A4. We have also this circle here, I don't know from where. I was testing a few things before, but yeah, lets basically use this one or delete and create a new one. So basically what we're going to do is we're going to use the tool of Adobe Illustrator. Adobe Illustrator has a 3D tool and for what we want to do is basically pretty cool, and we can achieve something that we could achieve in Cinema 4D but basically we're going to do it here in Adobe Illustrator. So how to start and do those doughnuts, basically the way how it works is we're going to make a circle and then we're going to make that circle repeat 360 degrees and that is going to form a 3D shape and the 3D tool on Adobe Illustrator gives you also the possibility to add some lighting to it. For more of that, let's get into it and start doing. So I'm going to go and grab a circle. You can find it here and then press or hold Shift on your keyboard and then just drag and let's make a shape. Let's bring it in center and I'm going to hold Alt on my keyboard and duplicate this circle and move it on the right side. That's because we want to make sure that after we create the 3D shape with this circle, we're going to make a few. So we want to have the same size and basically I'm just duplicating and saving it for later use it. So I have this circle in the middle and maybe I'm just going to delete these and just keep Shift and Alt hold on your keyboard and just let's make it a bit smaller. Make sure that the circle has the fill and not a stroke for what we want to do, we want it to not have a stroke. So just fill, choose your favorite color, I'm going to go with blue that I have here. Also make sure that you go to File and when you created a document, document color mode is RGB and not the other way. So I have here the circle I created, I'm going to select it and go to Effect, 3D, and Revolve. So the 3D tool in Adobe Illustrator has this option, which is the revolve one and here we are. I have these fewer more options open, but I'm just going to keep it open. So I'm going to illustrate a few things for you. So basically what we're going to do now is we're going to play with these 3D tool. In order to see what are we going to do change, Adobe Illustrator has this preview icon on the bottom left. Just press that and [inaudible] , you can see that we already made that doughnut effect, but it's not quite right, it doesn't look like the final one. Actually we can even play with this cube in here and move it to see different angles and different perspective. But what is basically this shape is lacking and something that is missing is the gap in the middle to look more like a spacing. So in order to achieve that, basically you need to increase the offset. I'm going to go with 100, I'm pretty sure it's right. Yeah, we have selected the preview check mark on the bottom but Adobe Illustrator sometime doesn't work and you have to uncheck it and check it again. So we have this doughnut shaped but there is a problem with this. I think there is a lot of space, maybe I'm going to go not 100 but probably 80. I'm just going to go back, I accidentally placed enter. So I'm going to go preview and just maybe go with 80 and let's see. I think this is quite right. All right, now you can play with different perspective of these 3D effect. I'm just going to go with this effect in here and I think I like it here. But make sure that you remember the offset that is 80 and you can even play with a plastic shading. I highly recommend that you use a plastic shading and you can play with a light intensity, ambient light and all the other options. But for these, I'm just going to stick with that and like play around with what I have right now. I'm going to go and click Okay, and there is something weird that happened. All right, I'm just going to keep that. That circle, I created before, for some reason it disappeared, so I'm just going to copy this and just come here and place it back. So here I have that circle I had before. So I created my first doughnut, and here it is, and what I need to do now is create another one with a different perspective. So I'm just going to keep hold Alt on keyboard and duplicate and bring it in the center. I'm just going to grab the other one and bring it on the left side just to make some space. So I'm going to make this one and go Effect, 3D, Revolve, and I'm going to click the Preview check mark and then go with 80 and click on Check. Here I have shape. You can play around with these and get to the point where you like it. I highly recommend that you get different perspective for each 3D shape, and I highly recommend that you leave some space in the middle so you still can see that is a circle and like a tube doughnut. Here's the other one, I'm going to move it apart, and now I'm going to grab and hold Alt and duplicate that shape, bring it in center of the art board, go to Effect, 3D, Revolve again. I'm going to go with offset of 80, Preview, and here I have it. I'm going to move a different perspective. Let's play around a little bit with this, kind of like at here, I'm just going to stick with this one. I'm going to move it on the left side again, hold Alt and drag it in the center of the art board, go to Effect, 3D, and Revolve, and let's do the same again; 80 offset and Preview, and then let's move this around. You could even have to choose different color, I chose blue. Keep in mind that this doesn't really work with gradient shapes. So I tried that, I wish that would be something we could do with Illustrator, but doesn't work. So you have to stick with one solid color but I'm going to show you a technique how maybe you can as a gradient of that. So I'm just going to make one more. I'm going to keep Alt on the keyboard and drag it in the middle to do a duplicate of that and select that shape, go to Effect, 3D, Revolve, and do basically the same one, 80 offset and Preview, and change maybe a different angle. Let's get one more inside, and here we have one, two, three, four, five, and maybe let's do one more. Just going to do this fast, and we're going to go with offset of 80 and Preview. I think in here it's cool. We have six now, and basically, this is something you could use and you can get these right in Photoshop and play around with it. But basically, what I'm going to do now is just going to grab all of these. I'm just going to zoom out. I'm going to delete basically that circle, and just grab all of these and move them on the left side. Maybe, let's arrange them a little bit. As I mentioned before, basically I could just use this doughnut effect and use this for the final poster. But yesterday I post this poster with these shapes and I don't want to use this again on different poster. I'm basically going to show you a different technique on something else that I've been playing around, so we're not going to make doughnuts, but we're going to make half doughnuts maybe, and you can use this one and use them on your own poster. I just showed you technique how to do the full thing. But now I'm going to show you how you can do a different one, so I'm going to go and grab the circle again, and just zoom a little bit here, and I'm going to make another circle. I'm going to go to Effect 3D and revolve again. Before we created these doughnuts by just increasing the offset number to 80, I'm just going to do that again. I'm going to click on "Preview", and we got again another doughnut. Basically how this tool works is that, you tell the tool that this is the shape I want to repeat, and repeat in 360 degrees, and basically it makes a circle with offset of 80 pt. What do we want to do actually now is we don't want a 360, but we want something that is 90 degrees, and let's see. Here we got 90, maybe I'm going to go with 120. When did that happen? That was weird. I'm just going to go again, 80 offset and then degree maybe 90 again. That's right. So here we have the 90 degree, maybe I'm going to go again with 120, and I don't know why this happens. This is weird. I'm just going to stick maybe with that 90 degrees, I'm going to stick with this one, I'm going to build a few of these, so here's the first one, and click "Okay". Let's make another one, so I'm just going to go back, copy this, go forward and pierce the shape, so we have the same circle we did before. Let's make another one, we go to Effect 3D revolve, and now we're going to make the offset of 80, click Preview and choose 90 degrees, so let's see how that looks. Let's get a different angle of that. Let's move this bar. I think this one here might work. Let's click "Okay," I did the same mistake, I didn't duplicate that circle, so basically what I'm going to do is the same. It's just going to go back, copy, and go forward, and paste it right here. I'm just going to keep it there, Alt and move it on the left so we have it. Let's do that again, 3D revolve, and an offset of 80 preview, and 90 degrees, and let's see how that looks. Let's get a different angle for this one, maybe something more like vertical. This one here kind of looks okay, bring it down here. I'm going to do the same, Alt, bring it in Center and go to Effect 3D and revolve. I haven't selected circle effect. Make sure that you select the circle. Go to Effect 3D and revolve, and go to Preview, 80 offset and 90 degrees. Let's get a different angle for this one, I'm going to stick with this one, bring it down here. Let's duplicate this one again, and then Effect 3D, revolve and add an offset of 80. Preview and add it 90 degrees, and let's move it helps previous in object. Let's get a different perspective for this one, or I am going to stick with maybe this one, just trying to get different angles for each one, and I'm going to make one more, and Effect 3D or evolve, and preview 80 offset and 90, the angular. Let's get a different perspective for this one, maybe this one. Let's do one more. So select the circle Effect 3D, Revolve. By the way, by holding Alt and drugging the circle in the middle, you duplicate that, I just want to make sure that shortcut. I'm going to click the check mark, which is the preview, go to 80 of offset and also 90 degrees for the repeating effect. I'm going to stick with this one, and here we have like seven different shapes. Basically, we went from making doughnuts like these to creating something like these tube shapes. So what we're going to do next, on the next video, I'm going to show you basically how you can manipulate this, and create a gradient to it. Make sure to check the next video, and let's play a bit little more with this. 3. Adding Gradients: Hey, welcome back everyone. As I mentioned before, what we're going to do now is add to the color and basically manipulate it and add a gradient effect to it. The way to do that is by just selecting one of those shapes we created. As you can see, this is basically still a 3D. The program still knows that is a 3D effect. We want to convert this into basically different paths. I'm just going to make all of them, but you can even select one and make that individual one. But I'm just going to go with Command A and select all of them and then go to Object and then Expand Appearance. As you can see now, before we had that circle in the middle, so that was still a 3D effect, now all of these colors are different shapes. So these 3D effect is made of different shapes in order to give us this effect. What we want to do now is, we want to create one shape like this, basically duplicate the whole thing with one solid color and add it on top of this one and then add a gradient to it, and then play with blending options. So what I'm going to do is select this shape, hold "Alt" on your keyboard and move one pixel to the right with the right arrow. Basically what we did is a duplicate of this shape now, and move it one pixel to the right. But what do we do one, is to go back one pixel to the left, so it's exactly above that shape. As you can see right now, this whole thing has different shapes inside. What we want to do is merge all of them together in one shape. So that's just going to slow down our computer, but I'm going to into Window and open Pathfinder if you haven't did open yet, and I'm going to go with unite tool, and this might take a moment, and basically what it does is like merges all of those individual shapes in one. So as you can see now, there is like one shape and behind that is the other one, the basic 3D tool. What I want to do is on this shape, I want to apply a gradient. So I'm going to go on the right side and add a gradient to it. I'm going to stick with these orange to more like red, and then I'm going to change the transparency to light. Maybe decrease a little bit the opacity to, let's make it 95 and see how that looks. I think this is pretty cool. The same thing you could do for the donuts, if you're going to use those ones, but I'm not going to use those ones. I'm going to use the tube ones. Basically what I'm going to do now is create the same thing for the donuts. I'm just going to go with Alt, hold "Alt" and move it to the right and then just go to the left, and then on the Pathfinder, press the "unite tool", and here I got a solid shape of that. I'm just going to press "I" on keyboard and it's the eyes drop and just going to get the same gradient as the previous one, and here we go. We got the same effect on the doughnut as well. Now I'm just going to select all of these and do basically the same thing, and drag and drop these and move them in Photoshop. I'm going to do one more just in case you didn't understand. So just make a duplicate of this Alt and right, and then I'll just go left. We made a duplicate of that on the Pathfinder, click the "Unite tool". It's going to become one shape. Yeah, it takes a few. A few have many things like many 3D objects in there. Here I have the shape. I'm just going to go with I and select the gradient. So basically got that effect. Here I have one more. I'm going to do all of these. On the next video, we're going to take all of these ones and move them in Photoshop and start building up the poster. Yeah, see you on the next video. 4. Designing the Poster: All right, welcome back everyone, as I said before, I'm just going to do the same effect, repeating all of them. Here I have all of the tube shapes with this kind of gradient. Basically what I'm going to do now is, I have the shapes like that, in any case you have that as duplicate shape on top of the previous tube we did. There might be another way to add the gradient, this is the way I found out and works for me, I'm going to group both two layers together, so I'm just going to select all that and press, "Command-G" or "Control+G" on Windows, I'm going to do the same for the other one, and same for the other one, the other one, the other one, and the other one, and then the last one. Here I have the shapes and basically what I want to do is get them somewhere close together so let's build the final thing in here and for some parts like, let's say this one in here, I might want to duplicate that so hold, "Alt" on your keyboard and then just try it and bring it somewhere there. Maybe let's circle that around a little bit and then let's do another duplicate, maybe this one, and duplicate and add it down here and let's circulate like that. Now let's do another duplicate here and circle that around and maybe one last one in here and let's circle that a little bit, rotate that to this position. All right, here I have different shapes, what I want to do now is select all of them and press, "Command-C" on keyboard or go to "Edit" and "Copy" and I'm going to go jump back on Photoshop. As previous classes, I have this template build up before in Photoshop where I use for all of my process. I'm just going to paste here the thing I did in Illustrator, the whole 3D shapes, I'm just going to go "Command-V", or you can go to "Edit" and "Paste", but I highly recommend using the shortcuts. I'm going to paste that as "Pixel" because I want to do some changes in here or maybe I'm going to go with "Smart Object", let's try this one. Here we have the shapes we did in Adobe Illustrator. We want to manipulate this right now in Photoshop and maybe change some colors and enhance the colors and maybe add some more effect to it. I'm just going to drag this behind the template text. Here I have it as a smart object, I want to add to it a bit of noise, I'm going to go to "Add Noise" and I'm going to leave it where it is, like 12.5% and click, "Okay" and as you can see, even if you have a smart object, you're going to apply a smart filter and this is pretty cool. I'm going to go now to "Image", maybe let's try with "Adjustments", which we have it here. What I want to do now is change the hue and saturation, you can go to "Adjustments" on the right side, if you don't have that, you have it here under the "Window" and select the "Hue/Saturation" but make sure that you right-click on that and this is applied only on the layer below, which we want to "Create Clipping Mask" so that's above that one and any change we do in this one, it's going to reflect only on that layer and not overall layers below that. I'm just going to increase a little bit the saturation and maybe I'm going to play with hue, maybe I can get another color. Let's try if you can get a nice purple, you're decent. Wow, I kind of like this one. As I mentioned also before and also on the other classes, basically, this is totally experimental for me, I haven't planned anything before, I mean, I plan what I'm going to show you as a tool, but I don't know what I'm going to end up doing. Basically it's a process I do everyday for all the process for the Baugasm project. I don't know what I'm going to do, I'm going to make mistake, I'm going to go back and change things. I think it's more experimental and you get a full view of my daily process of making these posters. I'm going to stick with this, I kind of like it, I can even go back later on and change it if I want. What I'm going to do now is select this layer and select the other one, and then press, "Command-G" and group them so now I have it more like in one place and I don't have it mixed, so I'm going to rename the group, and I'm going to call it "Tubes". What else we want to add to this poster? I don't know. Maybe we can add a shape on the background so press, "Command-Shift-New" to create a new layer and let's grab the rectangle right here and then let's hold, "Shift" on your keyboard and then just make a rectangle in the middle and then release "Shift" and bring it up until you're somewhere here. We got this black shape on the back. I kind of like that because it gives a lot of contrast to this tube. I think I'm going to stick with that, maybe let's try the white background. I kind of like that. Maybe we can try a dark purple, I don't know, like this one here. Also keep in mind that the same thing you could have done for the donuts and bring them here and play around with those. What I'm going to do right now is basically add some more effects, I don't know, little things that feel the whole poster. Usually what I like to do is maybe I'm going to create a new layer, Command, Shift, New. I'm going to go to the brush and I'm going to make the brush maybe, I don't know, five pixel. I'm also going to make the color in white. Basically what I'm going to do now is that this is simple, but I'm just going to paint some random lines, like this. Sometimes it gives a really nice effect to the poster. I'm just going to grab the layer and bring it on top. I'm just going to repeat these and add a few effects like that. Maybe I'm going to change the color from white and make it maybe gray the same as the background or maybe something else but let's see, like darker purple. All right, what else we need to add to this? Maybe we need some typography, so let's write something. I'm going to grab the Type tool and I'm going to type maybe tubes, I don't know. I could have chosen something else if I would have more time but I'm just recording this tutorial. I'm just going to change the font. Well, we could talk a lot about typography and I'm probably going to make a class in the future where we experiment with different typography. But my favorite font at the moment I don't know, its Futura, I can play around with it and apply it everywhere and it just works well. I'm going to make that as a choice here as well. I'm going to go with Futura. I'm going to go with Futura medium. Then pressing Command T, it's free transform, and then hold Shift on your keyboard and then just rotate it on the left side. Then I'm going to press Alt and shift, so I'm going to make this bigger, but also in the center and it resizes in perspective and keeps the shape of the font. All right, here I have it. I don't know if I'm going to keep this, maybe I'm going to change it. But what I want to do right now is I'm just going to rasterize the type, I'm going to decrease the opacity to let's say, I think here is 60 percent for now, we just want to see what's behind the text. I'm going to go back to the tubes folder, and I'm going to hold Command on keyboard and just click on the thumbnail of the vector shapes we brought from Illustrator. As you can see now, all of those are selected. What I want to do now is I want to go to the layer where the text is, the top layer right here, as you can see I selected the tubes one. Now I'm going to go and grab the delete tool. I want to increase the size of that, maybe to something close to 500. Now what I want to do is delete the parts where the text is going to fall behind the tubes. I'm going to delete it here on the t, I'm going to delete it here on the u, and on the b, let's make that smaller, and maybe also here, and then above the e. I don't know if it's good to delete the whole e letter, but let's give it a try. I think everyone could assume that there is a e, maybe not. I'm just going to leave it there. Now we're going to do it with the s. I'm going to go back to the opacitty right here and increase that back to 100. Here we got the word tubes, maybe we could have chosen a different word, but I'm not pretty happy with it, but let's leave it for now there and try to add something else. What I'm going to do now is I'm just going to go and grab the t tool again, and maybe add I don't know, some numbers. Let's say 90 degrees from what we used before, and let's make that a little bit bigger and add it somewhere here, and then duplicate that, bring it somewhere here and make a different number, 34. You can repeat this and just make some random numbers or letters or words, whatever you want. I'm just going to go and do this. I'm just going to stop it here for this video, and I'm going to fill the whole thing with a few numbers, and on the next video probably this is going to be finished. We're going to try to add something different on the next video. Make sure you check the next video. Let's get this more getting it to the awesome part where it's more finished. See you soon. 5. Abstract Brushes: Welcome back everyone. As I said, I'm going to add more these random numbers to the whole thing. But I end up also changing the word from tubes to supreme. I think the word supreme has more letters to it and gives it more space that the letters can hide behind the tubes and mix them together. I did the same thing previously as I showed to you on the tube and did the same on the supreme texts. So what are we going to do now? I'm just going to grab again, I'm going to go on top of the layers right here, and I'm going to make a new layer by holding Command Shift and letter and making new layer. I'm going to grab the brush tool by pressing the "B" on keyboard. Now I'm going to make a few dots on the whole thing. Sometimes I like to add this sparkling effect, which gives you more star effect. I'm just going to do these and repeat it all around the poster. I'm just going to go random all of it. You can use this technique for different effect to create stars or stuff. But I sometimes just add these because it gives more depth to the whole thing, and makes it look more like a 3D and organic. Don't over-exaggerate on it. Just keep it simple. Something else I've been using on the posters and all of you have asked is how I create those lines that are like path. But I'm going to do that basically right now. I'm going to go to the brush tool on the left and increase the brush. Let's check. Let's make it a bit more like 500. Maybe a little bit more. No, that's too much. Right here. So make sure to select even these feathered brush. Now I'm going to go with I and select these colors somewhere here, so we get the color we want or maybe these two keys, blue color. I'm going to go back and select the brush with B. Make sure you have selected the layer on the right, which is the empty layer. What I'm going to do now is draw a shape around. You can do this way, but I'm going to go to the mold right here and go with dissolve. Basically what this does is that keeps the same thing but just makes the more noisy the brush stroke. So I'm just going to drag and you can seen that it's more noisy. What I'm going to do now is write here, I'm going to select the Lasso tool and just drag only the right side of that brushstroke I created before. So that part is selected, now press "Command J" on keyboard and we duplicated the selection. Let's uncheck the I icon on the previous layer. What we got now is the second layer we created, we duplicate it with this brushstroke. I like this but still I think maybe the color is not right, so I'm just going to change the color, double-click on that and let's play with a color. Maybe we can add this color, not really. This is something that you can just experiment yourself. Maybe let's try this purple. I think I like this. You can play around with these and create whatever you want. I'm just going to grab it and bring it far down below the 3D shapes. So let's have some of these in the background. I'm going to press "Command G" to duplicate this and bring it somewhere around here. Do the same thing, and bring it somewhere here, and the same thing added somewhere here. Now I'm going to duplicate that and I'm going to bring the layer on top, and then just move it a little bit, make it smaller by pressing "Command T", It's free transform, holding Alt and Shift, and just make it a little bit smaller. You can even create a different shape, but I'm just dealing with this one here. For this one, I'm going to change the color and maybe make it more dark purplish. Now duplicate that. Bring it somewhere. I want to give that text some shading effect. Let's add it maybe somewhere here. Duplicate that and bring it somewhere here as well. I like what I got until now. I think this is something that I could play for hours and all of you could experiment and come up with your own colors. You can even change the colors of the tube, make something different. I highly recommend that you play around with something different from this because it just gives you perspective on making your own thing. I'm just showing you the tools and I'm just showing you the technique on how to create these, but doesn't really mean that you have to do the same as I'm doing because you might not like this, you might have a different style. I highly recommend that you experiment with tools and come up with something more of fewer spot. It's all up to you and I hope you learn something on this tutorial. I'm just going to show you the final. I'm going to play a little bit more around with these and add a few small things. As you can see, I give it the last touch. I really like what I did. I updated the headlines and the day number and the date. I also added these lines that basically are connecting the numbers in a way and also play sum of those on the back and also change the brush strokes on the background color to more darker purple. I like this. I like what I got into it. I don't know what you ended up doing, probably something cooler than mine. I highly recommend that you play around with Adobe Illustrator 3D tool. You could even use the donuts effect like the circle. You can even not use the 90 degrees. You could have used, I don't know, 120,160. Play around a little bit more with that and come up with a different technique but for this one, I ended up doing this one. As always, this is totally experimental. I don't know what I'm going to do and I don't know what I'm going to end up doing. For this one, this is what I got. I really like it. This is going to be the today's poster. I'm going to post it also with the announcement that I made a new tutorial. Hopefully, all of you can jump on board and watch this and learn something new and something that you all have requested.
