I have had many self-made titles over the years: Brand Manager, Digital Architect, Interactive Designer, Graphic Designer, Web Developer and Social Media Expert, to name a few. My name is Lindsay Marsh and I have been creating brand experiences for my clients for over 12+ years. I have worked on a wide variety of projects both digital and print. During those 12 years, I have been a full-time freelancer who made many mistakes along the way, but also realized that there is nothing in the world like being your own boss.

I have had the wonderful opportunity to be able to take classes at some of the top design schools in the world, Parsons at The New School, The Pratt Institute and NYU. I am currently transitioning to coaching and teaching.

1. Class Preview: this'll New Class takes a look at some of the upcoming and current design trends that will continue to 2019. Designers roles are expanding and understanding the future skill sets that will be in demand is important to grow. Not only will look at stellar examples of those trends in action, but we'll dive into some software programs that can help us start to think about learning these new skill sets. To emulate these trends in 2009 I hope to add more trends. ASSES class evolves, but enjoy this quick journey now hopefully inspire new creative ideas for you this year and beyond. 2. Design Trend - 3-D: there is an overwhelming trend that is hard to ignore. And that's the use of more three D objects into something with the availability of many different software programs. Now, with wonderful whole rich three D creation experiences, more and more designers will start to add this to the resume of skills. This year, you'll see more headlines and typography Using three D With its rich sense of texture and depth, they'll have realistic shadows and highlights that will make the viewer almost want to reach out and touch. You'll see a lot of three D objects using website mock ups and lay out a splash page elements and visual treats. Thes three D objects don't have to be fully rendered three D objects, as the same effect can be achieved by using clever shadow and layering tricks. And Adobe Illustrator in photo shop. Three D objects can not only at death and realism, but thing in Addison's action and motion that may not otherwise be achieved in some other mediums. As a designer, you can utilize three D effects by having them is thoughtful background elements and another wise empty design, adding a unique quality to a brand asset instead of placing objects or products on empty spaces. Flat backgrounds, you can use three D elements to shape and mold and interactive environment for your design elements, giving them a place to shine and complement that background. Once again. That three D effect could be achieved by using two D effects and Photoshopped or other programs. Take, for instance, this local design. This local provides an interesting interactive feeling by simply leaving in and out of the typography in Web design, using three D molded elements in balance well with otherwise flat typography, the's air molded using adobe dimensions and easy to learn modeling program programs can add realistic shadows and lining that would otherwise be very difficult to had by Hand and Photoshopped. Now that we've seen this trend in action by doing some wonderful work found on, be ans dot com, I'm gonna go over a few software programs you can learn and dive into deeper to achieve some of these wonderful project looks 3. 3-D - Where to Start?: one of the most widely available three D tools you have at your disposal will be Adobe Photo Shop. Surprisingly, Adobe Photoshopped has some wonderful built in three D tools that have improved dramatically in the last few years. It allows you to create three D objects from built in shapes, allowing you to add textures, lighting on multiple objects to create a scene you could even use. The pen tool to draw custom shape and photo shop allows you to convert that object to three D. It allows you to create some pretty realistic lighting effects on typography and type as well. I have a six minute quick dive into how to get started using the three D panel workspace in Adobe Voter Shop. After this lesson, if you're interested in finding out how to use photo shop is a way to add three D to your design skills. Another option for those with the Adobe Creative suite is Adobe Conventions. This program is somewhat new to the scene, but it's a mock up editor that has some pretty powerful three D textures, lighting and effects. It has several built in assets you can use and customize as well as download new assets you may need for certain project. I love to sit a product, mock ups and dimensions and set it to a background that matches the scene. Take, for instance, is flat soda can design I created for a sparkling water company. I could take a simple flat design and exported as a simple JPEG and be able to apply that to a standard stock three D model of a can and adobe dimensions. I can scale it on a model and then change the scene and find the right camera angle for my project. I can also include multiple models to create an ad from Pakistan. For example, this tool is definitely worth checking out if you want to add three D elements to design without having to model objects yourself. This is also recommended for brand presentations and creating your own custom mock ups. Yeah, if you want to specialize in three D, there are several pro tools available, like Blender Maya and in this case, cinema four D Thes tools could be very expensive license and have a steep learning curve. So these air suggested for those wanting to dive deep and even get into three D modeling and animation. I think the big take away here is becoming more comfortable with several design programs. You can create a much wider variety of projects for client work. For example, the lotion product design was first created in Adobe Illustrator that I brought it in as a J Beg into adobe dimensions to be placed on a mock up and set the scene. I brought this into Photoshopped to add finishing touches and add typography to create a website landing page graphic to present to a client. The knowledge of multiple tools goes a long way and being able to keep up with the latest trends and three D design and presentation. 4. Design Trends - Color: color. One of a designer's best assets understanding, trending color palettes and vibes is important to know is it helps us adapter signs to an ever evolving audience with varying tastes. The current trend of Grady and Patches and meshes seem to be gripping the design world, with its lush and vivid combination of colors that feel dynamic and even sometimes jarring . Expect more experimentation with color. Strong color combinations that would normally make us nervous is designers will become standard as they help designs and product stand out from the boring and take on a more creative, authentic organic look. Color does not have to take over an entire design element. It can simply be an added splash or an area that has creativity to an otherwise dull environment. The wonderful aspect about this trend. Unlike the three D trend before it's it's, it's very easy to learn radiant meshes and the tools it takes to create them. Once you get a good grasp on color theory and how to combine colors, radiant meshes can be used to create an almost three D layered effect by using lighter colors for highlights and darker colors for low lights and the next lesson of this class, I'm going to give you a quick tutorial on how to create those Grady. It measures in the dhobi illustrator to help give you that wonderful splash of color cheer designs this year. In 2019 we will start to see more curvy shapes and lines design as we start to move a way from flat design and to something more smooth and soft. Thes stronger color combinations could be accentuated further by using these curves to bring them together in a playful way. With the addition of these more smoother organic shapes, designs and packages connect more like art pieces and less like utilitarian objects. Way have some creative juices flowing on. Go to shoe A quick, simple way to start using these radiant missions and bold curves in your designs by hopping into illustrator and doing a quick project 5. Design Trends - Gradient Meshes: So in this quick lesson, I wanted to go over ingredient meshes And how you can kind of add some of the trims that I've talked about in the previous video. We're gonna go ahead and I'm in Adobe Illustrator. Right now I'm gonna grab the pin tool. We're just gonna create kind of one of those curvy shapes that we saw and some of those design trends. So we're just gonna just make real curvy shape. There is no wrong way to make a curvy shape, just kind of experiment with pen tool going complete my shape. And the great thing about Grady, it meshes. It's a very easy tool to use. And so here's the Grady. It mesh tool right here is go ahead. It's normally the Grady until but its hold down. And I'm gonna go ahead and click anywhere on this piece of that's gonna add some anchor points. You know, let's click right here in this area and you'll notice it adds several anchor points where we can change the color points on each one of those. Let's click again over on this other side. And so now what we're gonna do is we take our direct selection tool. We're gonna zoom in and we're gonna start selecting colors for Grady int mesh to kind of get that dynamic pops of color. And so one of the keys about a successful Grady, it mesh is kind of having a combination of highlights and low lights. So brighter colors and maybe darker versions of that same color. So I gotta go ahead, take the direct selection tool just kind of makes him selections are going to stay kind of in the warmer pink tones. I got to continue to select different ones. So right up here, I'd like to maybe consider that the highlight. So I'm gonna select a couple of these. You could take your eye dropper to example, the color that you just did down here. But you can also make it lighter, brighter to kind of add a sense of highlights. Kind of gives it a little bit of a depth to it. Same thing here. Just take your eye dropper to wittekind sample. And so down here can always move and shift these around. You can even take this and be able to add curves to your bins to your colors. Okay, So let me go ahead and sample this pink. But also go maybe a little bit into the blues. Kind of dive into a blue is creating that dynamic pop of color. Gonna continue to do the same thing, Maybe make this darker since it's towards the bottom. Maybe that is a low light. So I'm just taking the darker version of that purple and kind of see this coming together. Go ahead. Take that direct selection tool DoubleClick and moved down at a little bit of curves and then add some color. Maybe start attics and blues. We haven't done any blues just going down the scale here, adding that pop of color. I'm gonna continue to do this for the rest of the anchor points to create kind of a dynamic effect. Do so. I took a few moments to mess around with the other anchor points and add colors. Watches, I thought kind of added a nice, dynamic clash of color and you notice, have some warm tones up here and maybe some lighter. The lightest shade appear to kind of Addison's of highlights, and down here I added some cooler colors, so there's warm and cool color slowly blend together to create something pretty dynamic. So I went ahead and took the direct selection tool and you'll notice down here to do I have this kind of interacting almost coming together. And you could do this by a messing around with the anchor points with the direct selection tool. Go ahead and shifting some of these around to kind of get that classic color. So you notice how this line intersects with this one that comes right down here. So that's kind of where how I made that little bit of effect there we go back to where I waas and so we can always change. Could change the photo out. You can play around with this. I'm gonna go to my transparency panel and mess around with some blending modes. Kind of see if I can get this to fade back so you can see a little bit of the photo behind it. This was the final result. I added a little pop of color on the upper right hand side and created an ad from this kind of the anti bank add Banks usually stay pretty safe when it comes to color, so this one has a little bit of a different personality. So great it measures. Have fun, play around with it. I teach lessons on Grady Int meshes on skill share and on you to me. I think I go in a little bit more in depth guide with those so hopefully you'll enjoy this trend in 2019 and and beyond. 6. Typography Trends for 2019: double type were two words that nicely over top of each other and still remain legible is a new trend moving into 2019 as hand lettering dominated 18 4019 will see hand lettering and computer typefaces combined together to make something magic. These double type presentations Consejo more using less space and give the designer and opportunity have the design and the headline become one. The texting characters can weave in and out in a bid to elevate the type to a sophisticated , layered look. And speaking of hand lettering, that trend is not going to go away but only accelerate. This time it goes mainstream. That means that having some lettering skills and up in your typography theory and understanding will possibly lead to more agency and even mainstream client opportunities. Learning him lettering could be a simple is taking a few classes here in there and following a few hand letter and gurus on instagram for some daily inspiration. The procreate app, which uses the iPad pencil, is a fantastic program to use tickets started practicing him lettering. The wakame tablets are another cheaper solution that cost 1/4 the cost of an iPad and I apple pencil for those looking not to break the bank, learning lettering and digitizing it. Finally, just a simple pencil and paper could be suitable for practicing hand lettering as you can easily digitize most hand sketches by taking a simple photo with your phone and bringing it into illustrator to trace with the pin tool. I'm here in the procreate nap, attempting to try the double text look by bringing in static text I exported from Photoshopped as a PNG, and now I'm creating a new layer and procreate to create my hand lettering portion. Then I create a mask just like photo shop, and I remove certain portions to create that weaving in and out layered look. This is not my main skill set for sure as a designer, but continuing to add this to the skills I am learning expands my potential as a designer to take on a wider variety of projects. Another trend in typography is more illustrative lettering where type characters can take on a much more detailed in full of life feel something that was practised a lot in the mid century. Design is the art of misalignment of typography. No longer should you feel bound by perfect alignment of lettering and praises. Now is the time to experiment with varying types of character placements and flow. I hope you enjoy this quick dive into some of my thoughts about upcoming design trends involving typography. This year. I also hope you can start to explore some of these Softwares and skill sets and hopes that you can expand as a designer who can take on anything in the future design. 7. BONUS - Photoshop - Getting Started using 3-D Panel: I just wanted to do a quick couple minute tutorial just to kind of show you how easy issues the three D tools and Adobe Photo Shop just to kind of give you an idea. So if you do have Adobe photo shop, I just did a simple type tool. And I use azo Sands, which is a nice, bold typeface, and I have it right here on its own separate layer. So the first thing you want to do is make sure you have your window and go down to three D . So I'm gonna make sure that three D window is available or panel. In this case, we're gonna go and click on three D. And now that we have that have been pulled that window out and drag it next to my layers just so I can have easy access to it, I'm gonna go to my layers panel and I have my 2019 layers selected. And all you have to do is flip back over to three D, and then you're able to create your three d object very easily. We're gonna do a three d extrusion, and I'm gonna go ahead and click on create, and it's gonna ask you to switch to the three D workspace and you're gonna say yes and photo shop is gonna switch to have some new panels available so they can be ableto add the three D elements. Now that I'm into the three D workspace and photo shop, I have several different tools at my disposal so I can go ahead and zoom in on my 2009. We can apply certain effects to it to give it that slick, shiny look. And so you have your kind of tool tool here that will help you be able to move it on the X and the Y access axes and can also be able to make it larger, smaller and set its position on the workspace. So let's kind of add some effects and get the right angle. So all I'm going to do is click and hold. Let's try to get kind of a neat angle and you'll notice a certain thickness for the type. I'm gonna go ahead and change my extrusion depth, and that's gonna change how deep the 2019 goes. So I'm gonna go ahead and just make that a lot smaller. So I'm back here in my three d panel right here. I'm gonna go ahead, drag it out so you guys can see the panel I'm currently working from and selecting from. And then light is everything in three D. So when you could go down and selecting an infinite light option, you'll be able to kind of change the direction of where the light is coming from. So you can kind of make it look like the light is coming from behind it. Whatever will be in your environment. So if you want to set the sun up at the top, you can. Or if it's an inside environment and its top down, you could set the lighting there as well. So I usually like to set up the lining before I go to the effects. So next we're to go to the effects. We're gonna go ahead and select on 2090 wherever it already did our shape preset. But I'm gonna go ahead, show you how we did that. So I have my, uh, shape selected right here. See the t the 2019. I'm gonna go up here to the properties panel and go to shape preset, and there's some presets that you can download and load in here. But here's the default presets and voter shop. Some of them have kind of a bubble effect. Several, um, flat, some at a types of effects. Some of them are a little bit, while two we're going to stick with a very simple bevel effect. Kind of gives it that nice, smooth look. You can kind of already start to see a little bit of a shape coming together, So let's start to add some lighting and effects. So where to? Go ahead and click on this layer. It's gonna be kind of the sub layers underneath the 2019. We're gonna go and select all of these layers and go ahead and apply some of these effects in the properties panel. So there's some built in presets that you can use with the W photo shop. And once again, you can also download these different presets that have different types of effects to summer metallic and summer gold. They're all gonna have kind of a different preset dems. Get a cycle through a few these I think I'm actually going to do my own. I'm gonna go back in my history panel and go back to our other preset. We're gonna create my own could to defuse, which will change kind of the coloring. So let's say we want to have it be a blue could change it to blue that will be defuse, defuse changed in different elements here to make a little bit lighter. Play around. Have fun with this. I'm gonna add more shine. It's gonna add that reflective element and reflection that's gonna add kind of a lighter quality as it reflects the light around it. So I'm playing around with lighting a little bit more now that we've added a material that can see how much it effects shadows and how they're reflecting off of the object to continue to have fun with its. It's amazing how Photoshopped such an easy to use program, has shuts an extensive array of three D tools. You could do this with type, but you can also do the same thing with objects, any object you draw with a pin tool. You could then do the same thing on select the three D layer and be able to make an object out of it. So this is not a full tutorial, but I just want to show the power of three D and photo shop and a lot of amazing things that looks like it was done in D or something. High end advanced three D programs, actually.
