Are you a master marketer? Follow these tips and best practices to turn your marketing insights into an amazing class on Skillshare.

1. Consider class length

The highest earning Skillshare classes are between 20-60 minutes, broken into 2-5 minute video lessons (with a 1-2 minute intro video). Stick to one key concept per video and title them based on the content, so students know what to expect throughout.

2. Choose your filming technique

You will be ready to click “publish” in no time with two simple approaches for filming your marketing class: a screencast or talking-head style video.

Screencasting is a straightforward approach to filming a high-quality marketing class. All you need is your computer and a microphone. Whether you have a PC or Mac, you can guide students through an engaging slide presentation while narrating the key concepts throughout. Find our favorite equipment and software for recording a screencast here.

A digital marketing class can also be easily achieved through a “talking-head” style video, which is where you physically appear in front of the camera. A basic toolkit includes a camera, tripod, and microphone. Most teachers use tools they already have, like an iPhone or webcam, or purchase inexpensive ones like these.

Many of our top teachers stick to just one or incorporate both styles into their class. Consider your class topic when deciding which filming method to utilize. Communicating ideas around Google analytics, Excel, or SEO lend themselves better to screencast, while developing a brand vision or personality are often shared more effectively through a “talking-head” style video.

3.  Use a conversational tone

Before you start filming, take some time to practice key talking points, but don’t narrate a script. Our highest earning teachers utilize a conversational tone in their classes. Peg Fitzpatrick appears natural and relaxed in her Pinterest Marketing 101 for Creative Entrepreneurs class, leading her to reach 1,600 students.

4.  Offer insights that can be used broadly

Whether you use a specific website for SEO research or email marketing, offer insights that can be applied across a variety of contexts. Not only do students want to learn about credible services for searching keywords, but they are more curious to learn your unique and personalized approach. Allyson Van Houten’s class on email marketing offers her approach to selecting content for an email campaign that can be easily adapted, even though her go-to service is MailChimp.

5. Incorporate practice projects

Offer multiple exercises or tasks within your digital marketing class that allow students to practice their newly learned skills and build their confidence. Al Chen offers an interactive Excel workbook for students to utilize throughout his class, Excel for the Real World: Gain the Basic Skills of Microsoft Excel, giving them an opportunity to follow along throughout his video lessons.

6. Merchandize your class strategically

The first thing students see is your class merchandising, or the way you “package your class.” It’s important to hook students right away by offering clear and eye-catching class merchandising. Faye Brown’s class, Branding Your Creative Business: Social Media For Your Business, pairs a visually appealing cover image with a clear and concise title, so students know exactly what to expect.
