Eight of Skillshare’s Favorite Photography Projects
Student work is always impressive, but sometimes it floors us.
When Skillshare’s teachers assign their students a project to complete, the results are often impressive. Our community is full of talented artists, developers and entrepreneurs who create innovative work, and it is always meaningful to see people try new things.
Occasionally though, a student produces work that is so uniquely interesting that it stands out above the rest. This is the kind of student project that we enjoy the most: the kind that showcases imagination, demonstrates creative verve, and takes the possibilities of their particular assignment to new heights. When a student produces something superb, it lets us know that they have fully absorbed the class material and become inspired by it. That inspires us, in turn!
So in case you need a little artistic encouragement (or just want to be dazzled by some truly cool images), we’ve rounded up eight Skillshare student photography projects that we count among our favorites.

Danae Hudson submitted a series of beautiful photographs after taking Ian Norman’s Nightscapes: Landscape Astrophotography class on Skillshare. Her dynamic shots of a church in Bethany-Beyond-the-Jordan artfully combine Norman’s lessons on exposing for the night sky and how to “paint with light.”

Carlos Diaz uploaded a set of tropics-inspired photographs for Linda & David’s class, Dark Botanical Photography: Capture Beautifully Moody Images of Plants. His work embodies a “moody” low-light technique, but his eye for abstract details pushes it to new heights.

In response to Marte Marie Forsberg’s class, Lifestyle Photography: Capturing Inspiring Visual Stories, Liz Ayling produced beautiful images to tell a story about an afternoon tea. In her photographs, lovely light and and interesting textures become dynamic, narrative lifestyle compositions.

Motivated by Steve Sweatpants’ Street Shots: Photographing Scale, Light, and Colors, Fré Sonneveld produced arresting streetscapes in his home city of Berlin. In this work, an unorthodox point of view imbues this image with vibrancy, making a mundane scene feel fresh and interesting.

In Creative Self Portrait Photography: Going Beyond the Selfie taught by Lindsay Crandall, Nadira Filatova was asked to take a photo of her hands without showing her face. In response, Nadira submitted a photograph that uses light and shadow to elevate her self-portrait beyond the commonplace and toward the sublime.

Sam Teague proves that even if you don’t have expensive photography equipment at your disposal, you can create beautifully detailed work. After taking Mariya Popandopulo’s iPhone Photography: Make Your Pictures Stand Out, he created this high-quality black and white image using only his smartphone.

With the help of the lessons he learned from Outdoor Photography: Shooting at Sunset, Sunrise and Night taught by Chris Burkard, Aleš Krivec ventured to Lake Bled in Slovenia to capture the landscape in a moment of magic.

Emma Callinan is frank about how helpful she has found Justin Bridge’s class, The Fundamentals of DSLR, particularly when it came to capturing depth of field. “I have always had a hard time with manual settings. This class really helped me understand how to balance aperture with shutter speed” she says, adding that “overall I saw a significant difference in my shots after watching [Justin’s] series.” Her beautiful pet portraits demonstrate her improved skillset, and the power of adjusting for light manually.
