I had so much fun doing this - I've been away from Illustrator for a very long time and this just sparked that motivation for me again!

I picked Ariel to be the model for this illustration/playing card if you couldn't tell, haha.

I started doing some sketching in my sketchbook, then traced them in Illustrator. I sketched corals, a fish and a mermaid. Ariel Playing Card - image 2 - student project

I worked quite along time on trying to figure out what colors to used. I loved the blue and pink hair and the muted colors, but still ended up making a very vivid illustration. I used colors from a regular playing card and from 'the little mermaid' as well. Ariel Playing Card - image 5 - student project

I had some bubbles in the background but at some point they got lost and I only just realized it while uploading this.. I feel the illustration is lacking some texture but for this project I didn't have the energy or patience to keep pushing. Ariel Playing Card - image 7 - student project

My boyfriend thought I should put the phrase "Spirit of a fish", that made me laugh out loud. It would probably be more like "spirit of a human", sinces it's her big dream to become one, haha.
