The best way to improve your drawing is to practice more. Rewatching the videos from a course and practicing the lessons until you have mastered the skills is the best way to develop your drawing skills. This month, it’s also the best way to win!

To be eligible, identify one Art & Science of Drawing course (from the list below) that you want to focus on improving. Rewatch and complete the practice for each lesson then post the final project you completed the first time and your final project after dedicated rewatching and practice. You could win a free year of Skillshare Premium Membership! You only need to post in one course to enter, but you’re welcome to enter multiple times by sharing your growth in multiple courses this month. This is a great excuse to recommit to your drawing practice this August! Submissions of initial and final drawings posted between August 3rd and August 28th will be considered for the free membership.

The classes to practice to win this month:

DYNAMIC MARK MAKING / Drawing with Expression & Creativity
- Project from final lesson: Observe atmospheric perspective in the real world and capture it in a drawing while you're on location.
- OR
- Simulate the effects of atmospheric perspective in a still life.
MEASURING & PROPORTION / Drawing with Accuracy & Precision
- Project from final lesson: Find 3 objects of moderate complexity. Measure and draw each subject using the measuring tools and strategies you’ve learned this week. Experiment with different ways of using these techniques to discover what process works best for you. Leave your measuring lines visible on the page as a record of how you arrived at the measurements and proportions for your drawings.
CONTOURS / Drawing with Compelling Contours & Foreshortening
- Project from final lesson: Prepare a banana with cross contour rings. If a banana is not available feel free to substitute a similar object.
- Draw the banana a minimum of three times from three different positions. Each drawing should be more foreshortened than the last.
SHADING FUNDAMENTALS / Drawing with Dramatic Light and Shadow
- Project from final lesson: Complete fully shaded drawings of the three basic volumes: the sphere, the cube and the cylinder.
- Draw each volume on white paper using a black pencil and on toned paper using a black and white pencil.

The Art & Science of Figure Drawing:

VOLUME & STRUCTURE / Learn the Art of Dynamic, 3D Figure Drawing
- Project from final lesson: Select three images from the Practice Reels or Downloadable Images. Do drawings that explore and experiment with the ideas presented in the lesson “Communicating Volume Through Drawing”. Bring all of your skills together and play with volumetric drawing.

How it Works

Identify a class that you want to gain more skills with (Dynamic Mark Making, Measuring & Proportion, Contours, Shading Fundamentals or Volume & Structure). Find your final project from when you initially completed the course. Watch the lessons for the class and complete the practice as many times as you need to until you have improved your drawing skills.
Once you’ve completed your final project, upload it to the class with your initial drawing. In addition to your final project, you’re welcome to share a description of your process, and any questions or ideas that came up along the way. You can check out the great work others have shared for inspiration, and feel free to leave feedback for your fellow students.
