Assignment:

Your project is to achieve a realistic representation of fur/hair using the techniques shown in this class. I have attached 6 images that you can chose to work from including close ups or alternatively you can use your own photographic reference – it’s entirely up to you! Just remember it’s a good idea to start with something relatively simple. Also, remember you’re not solely restricted to doing animals as this technique can be used for many other subjects as well.

Materials:

4 Pencils ‘2B’, '4B', '9B', ‘4H’ and ‘9H’ or similar grades
Indenting Tool – This can be shop bought or alternatively, I will also show you how you can make one of these
Blending Stump
Kneadable Eraser
Drawing Paper - Although, I will be using St Cuthbert's Saunders Waterford you could use something else but ideally it wants to be Hot Press and have a relatively smooth surface. I find 300g, 100% cotton paper is ideal to use with the indenting technique as it wants to be relatively tough.

Getting Started:

I would advise watching each part through first to gain an understanding of the process before starting your drawing.

Sharing Your Artwork:

When you have completed your project showing different types of realistic fur/hair, please upload it to 'your class project' where you will also be able to see what other students have posted.

I look forward to seeing your progress as you gain confidence using the indenting technique. This does require practice and there is a degree of trial and error as you learn. However, I am always happy to answer any questions that you may have at any time.

Getting positive feedback or words of encouragement can go a long way in helping us appreciate our accomplishments. This can happen when another student asks you a question about your art, or when someone else acknowledges your progress.
