Introduction

Hello everyone! Have you ever wanted to try watercolors, but were intimidated by it? Where do you even start? Well, this class if for you.

I'm Norma from NormaCreates. I'm an artist and a teacher. I created this class for you. I remember years ago, I loved the way watercolors looked, but was intimidated and overwhelmed by the idea of trying them. I will teach you about the wet on wet technique and how to allow the watercolors to do the painting for you. You will also learn how to create simple flowers to decorate the beautiful watercolor background.

Class Description

In this class, you will learn to become more comfortable with the wet-on-wet technique which is a crucial foundation of watercolors. Together, we will look at how watercolor flows, blends, and dries. We will cover subjects like water control, transparency, and creating depth with colors. With use of the wet-on-wet technique, you will be able to create beautiful artwork to use as a thank you card, a conversation piece, or even a thoughtful gift. The possibilities are endless! This is a class designed to encourage beginners to start experimenting with watercolors. No prior experience is required. We are here to have fun!!

Project Description

Paint a magnificent water color background, then add white or black ink flowers. First, wet your watercolor paper, then add a dark watercolor to the edges, then drop a lighter color through the page. Pick up your paper and allow the colors to blend by tilting the paper up and down, and side to side. Allow the paint to dry.

Sketch a few flowers and copy the design onto your dry background. Be sure to download the template in the resource section so you can practice before transferring it to your background.

1. Pick one light color and one dark color.. Add plenty of water to them and have them ready.

2. What your watercolor paper using the 2 inch flat brush. You will need to do it twice so that your paper is very wet and you can see the sheen of the water.

3. Place a dark color on the edges and the middle of the paper, then add the lighter color through the paper. If you need, you can add more water to your paper.

4. Pick up your paper and allow the color to mix as you tell your paper in all directions.

5. Set aside to dry or you may use a blow dryer on low.

6. Reference page to practice sketching the different types of flowers that you will use on your final piece. You may use one or a few different flowers for your final piece. Just have fun!

7. Grab your white ink if you use dark colors on your background or black ink if you use light colors for your background and draw your flowers. Allow for ink to dry.

8. Fantastic, you did it! Now, keep practicing this technique and make it your own. Every time you use this technique it will always look different and have its own unique look.

-Choose 3 colors: Light, medium, and dark

-Paint and allow the watercolors to paint for you as you tilt your paper in different directions.

-As it dries, practice drawing flowers

Video 3: Materials

Format: Talking head, demo, video of material, and slides

Length: 2-5 min

Talking Points and Key Concepts:

-Watercolor paper: 140lbs Cold-press and or Strathmore Watercolor Card in any size you prefer.

Watercolor set: Student grade with the basic colors

Brush: Round Brush size 10

Tape: Artist tape, Painter’s tape, Masking Tape, or Scotch tape: any of them will work

Ink: Waterproof black ink like Microns .7mm or white acrylic fine tip .7mm or Uniball Signo pen.

TIP #1: Stick whichever tape you use to your pants about three times to keep it from tearing your watercolor paper when you remove the tape.

TIP #2: When rinsing your brush in clean water, brush of the water on the edge of your glass around 3 times to remove excess water to have better watercolor control.

Video 4: Wet on Wet

-Divide paper in fourths and try different color combinations in each quarter.

-Notice which color combination you like and which ones you do not.

-Do they complement or accent each other?

-Do they create muddy colors?

TIP #3: (INSERT) Chart of the Primary colors. Mix primary colors to create secondary colors. If you mix the opposites of the secondary colors you will create muddy colors or as I like to call them natures brown colors.

-Now let’s pick a combination from your practice watercolor sheet and let’s paint our watercolor sheet or watercolor card.

-Allow to dry as we get ready to learn how to sketch flowers in the next video.

Video 5: Flowers

-Take the practice guide and let’s practice!

-It becomes easier the more you practice.

-On the background practice sheet, ink the flowers and leaves.

-In the next lesson, we will learn how to combine our backgrounds and flowers to create our final piece.

Video 6: Combine

Format: Talking head, demo, and slides

Length: 2-5 min

Talking Points and Key Concepts:

-Take full sheet of paper or card and add the first flower in the middle and work toward the opposite corners

-Refer back to your sketches often

TIP #4: You can just add one flower with la few leaves as you build your confidence.

Video 7: Final Thoughts

Congratulations! You have finished your introduction to the wet-on-wet technique and created your final project!

You learned how watercolor flows, bends, and dries. Through practicing the techniques of water control, transparency, and creating depth with colors, you are on your journey to discovering how enchanting watercolors are as you allow the watercolors to do their magic.
