Paint your own sun and moon pair!

Start by choosing a limited color palette for creating your sun and moon. Amarilys recommends choosing three colors with a split complementary scheme for a subtle pop! If you need help choosing your hues, check out the color schemes printable in the resources section for some ideas.

Next, get to creating! You’ll build up your sun and moon by first laying down large shapes, adding medium forms for your faces and more detail, and then layering on small motifs for a final bit of fun. For some inspiration for the types of shapes you could use at each step, check out the design elements printable Amarilys created in the resources section.

You’re welcome to use whatever materials you like for this class. Have fun creating a single pair, or go crazy with multiple suns and moons to see how many different characters you can imagine up using these same principles. Whatever you paint, share your work in the project gallery so we can all appreciate your creativity!

Materials

While you can do this exercise using any artistic medium you prefer, here’s what you’ll need if you want to follow along with watercolors:

Watercolor paints — Amarilys is using Mijello Mission Gold paints, but you can use whatever you have!

Watercolor paper — Feel free to use whatever you have around, cut into small squares.

Brushes

Mixed media (optional) — Amarilys will be adding in some Posca paint markers and Copic white ink at the end for some final details. You’re welcome to play with any mixed media materials you like, or stick to watercolor!
