The project for this class is to paint an apple.

Step 1: Paint the apple (or a section of it) using a single-coloured under-layer.

Step 2: While the under-layer is still wet, work into it with your mixed black.

Tips:

Focus on your timing: the under-layer should be moist but not wet - you know it's the right moment when the shine has just gone off the paper.
Load your brush with your mixed black and then tap off some of the wetness from your brush into a tissue, before painting into your under-layer. For the wet-in-wet technique to work, your brush should always be less wet than your paper.
Work quickly, in sections, and maximise the use of lost and found edges.

Resources:

In the class resources section, you will find some photos of an apple. These are photos that I took of the same apple, each one from a slightly different angle and with slightly different lighting. I purposefully made them black and white, so you can focus on your values. Try to achieve a full range of tone, from light to dark.

You can paint just one apple, but you’ll learn and perfect the wet-in-wet technique if you paint the apple a few times (work from a different source photo each time). It’s really fun to try out different coloured under-layers and see how each colour affects the layers that you put on top.

Each painting should take you between 10 and 15 minutes. Have fun with it!
