Embark on a 7 day sketching journey to build confidence and create a sketching routine.
Learn sketching techniques that help to loosen up your sketches, sharpen your observational skills and embrace the imperfect lines and shapes to create visually interesting sketches. If you feel that you simply don't know where to start, these 7 techniques may just help you create a sketching routine, build confidence to kickstart your sketching journey!
What Will You Learn:
In this class, learn the techniques to loosen up your sketches, sharpen your observational skills and build confidence to create a sketching routine. Here's what we will be learning;
- How to hold a pen for sketching
- Blind contour sketching (using continuous line)
- Semi-blind sketching (using continuous line)
- Simplifying into simple shapes
- Negative spaces and angle of the lines
- Weight of the lines
- Adding value to your sketches
Spend just 20 minutes a day exploring these techniques to sketch. These are just a few tips to help you start with confidence. There are many other techniques that you may love to explore and create a personal style that feel comfortable to you.
Why Should You Take This Class;
- Sketching is a great activity to relax and be creative. It can sharpen observational skills, build problem solving abilities and boost confidence to those who seek to improve their artistic skills.
- As a hobby, it is a great way to relieve stress and enjoy self expression, with the simplest and easily accessible materials. One of the reason why I like to call it sketching rather than drawing is because the term is more informal, giving it a more relaxed and fun outlook.
- In this class, we are going to practice drawing quickly and loosely (what I like to call sketching), to capture the essence of the subjects instead of a highly detailed and accurate drawing. This allows us to enjoy the process and express ourselves at the same time.
Who Is This Class For;
This class is mainly for beginners in sketching who are looking to start and keep a sketching routine. This class is also for anyone who loves to sketch, but just don't know where to start or find it difficult to sketch regularly due to life's challenges.
Through this class, I hope to share tips to help you keep your sketches simple and less overwhelming.
Materials:
The materials for this course is quite simple. All you need is a pen and some paper/ a sketchbook!
- Pen: You can use any pen, starting from ball-points, fine liners, fountain pens or dip pens. Use a pen that you feel most comfortable with!
- Paper: A4 copy paper or a simple sketchbook.

I am Suzanne, a professional watercolour artist who creates vibrant paintings and urban sketches. I inspire people to sketch and paint; mainly to enjoy the therapeutic process that leaves you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the challenges of day to day routines!
Painting is a way I relax and unwind. I love the fact that the flow of pigment on paper is something that cannot be controlled. Over the years , I have been able to relate this particular quality of watercolours to my own life. Just like watercolours, our life is not something that we can always control. Most of the time, we have to let go of little things and just go with the flow so that we can enjoy the world we live in. The realisation of life in comparison to ... Vollständiges Profil ansehen
Praxisnahes Kursprojekt
Create loose and expressive pen sketches of subjects you come across in your daily life using the techniques learnt in this class.
- The subjects can be as simple as fruit and veg, household items, your creative tools, scenes from your garden, urban scenes etc.
- You can draw from life, looking at the objects, or refer a photograph if that's what you prefer.
- During this 7 days, we will explore 7 different ways to help you start sketching with confidence.
- Simply sketch along with me at a pace that suits you. Feel free to take more than 7 days or break it up into smaller sessions in a way that you need to spend just 10 to 20 minutes a day.
- This class is aimed to encourage you to create a sketching routine that you will enjoy.
Materials required:
- Pen: You can use any pen, starting from ball-points, fine liners, fountain pens or dip pens. Use a pen that you feel most comfortable with!
- Paper: A4 copy paper or a simple sketchbook.
Here's what we will be doing;
Day 1: Explore how to hold your pen. There are different ways to hold a pen while sketching. Some of them are great to create loose marks on paper. Some others are just perfect for finer details. Simply make marks on paper to explore different ways you can hold your pen.
Day 2: Blind contour sketching: Pick up a simple object that you like to sketch. In this section, we will practice looking and observing the object without looking at your drawing.
Day 3: Semi-blind sketching: Very similar to day 2, but we will practice looking at the object briefly, moving our eyes back and forth while sketching. You may use the same objects or references that you used for day 2.
Day 4: Simplifying into simple shapes: Today, we will discuss how to see your reference as simple geometric shapes to start drawing them. Once those simple shapes are drawn, finer details are added to create an impression of the reference.
There are two examples with the same techniques that you can work from.
Day 5: Negative space and angle of the lines: Create a drawing of the reference picture provided, looking at the negative spaces around the object. This is a great way to tackle those tricky perspectives! You may choose to sketch from both the reference or choose one of your favourites.
Day 6: Weight and quality of the line: Learn how to create sketches with characteristic lines.
Day 7: Rendering techniques to create depth: Practice rendering techniques such as hatching, cross-hatching, scribbling, stippling etc to create depth in your drawings. Sketch using the reference pictures provided.
Tip: At this stage, you may also use one of your favourite techniques to create your initial drawings. It may be a continuous line, simple shapes, negative spaces, angle of the lines, loose lines etc. You may choose a mixture of these techniques to create sketches.
Upload your scribbles/ your finished projects:
Please upload your process or your finished projects, or both on the 'projects and resources' section of this class.
If you have another technique that you love, please feel free to share that too!
It will be a great inspiration for me and for your fellow students.
