About This Class

Do you have an idea for writing fiction or non-fiction, but you’re not sure how you want to tell it? Are you having trouble deciding what genre to write in? How should you construct your story? In this two-part class, I’ll give you a method for choosing both of these, so you can clarify your concept, create a solid structure and start your story with confidence. It's all about making the most of your Creativity.

Class One is about Genre

The genre is part of the “how” of your story, and gives it atmosphere and flavour.. In this short class, we’ll go through a thinking process that will help you identify and select the fiction or non-fiction genre for your story idea.

You will either choose a genre straight out, or short list a couple of candidates and experiment by outlining your story in them and picking the one that feels right.

What fiction or non-fiction genre should I choose? Short Answer: Follow your heart, but there’s more to it than that.

Whether you’re writing long or short fiction, a novel, novella or screenplay, your choice of genre is the most important one you can make, and you need to make it before you start writing. Choosing genre is like creating a frame for your creative writing. Get it right and your storytelling can sparkle and stand out above the rest.

Here’s what we’ll cover.

  1. What is genre and why it matters.
  2. Main genre classifications
  3. How do I choose the genre for my story?
  4. Should I write for the marketplace?
  5. How do I know I have all the ingredients for my genre piece?
  6. Summary and Wrap
