remember periscope?

i streamed this course on periscope using this course! - https://periscope.tv/u/670945 - something i'm considering building on for my courses in general ;)

the live streaming app that killed of meerkat and got lots of people fired up about live video streaming even thou it had been out in similar format ten years previous? - that's right, that live streaming video!

well, they have opened the doors up to the backend of periscope to allow people who stream from desktop or other rtmp locations (portable teradek boxes on dslrs for instance) to connect in and stream. pretty cool. maybe the numbers or down or it's a competition against facebook live, either way it's good all around for everyone.

i made a course how to get going with this, some tips and why you should give it a go if your a live streamer - what you can find in the course. . ..

  • signing up with the email address you use for twitter
  • setting up wirecast/obs streaming
  • why periscope producer could be better to stream to than other places
  • recording your stream for posting elsewhere later
  • ideas for regular daily/weekly periscope programming (removing limitations of phone)
  • using rebrandly.com for short links for in show interaction

hope you enjoy it!

have a great day, don't forget to take part in the project! :)

1. 1.0 - introduction to periscope producer: everybody. Welcome back to a new course today. We're looking at Harris co producer, taking a look at selingo periscope producer using as streaming software mainly white cast. But you could do this with O. B s project as well. Also going to be discussing the benefits of using periscope compared to, say, using a YouTube or Facebook live, we're also gonna be looking at a screen cash showing you had a actually settle in wire. Cast the settings that you need for Paris co producer and also in O. B s project, which is a free to download piece of software for Windows and Mac. Most are gonna be touching on lightly some ideas for doing regular shows. Now you have access to periscope in a different way from desktop. You could do a lot more things you can do animation lower third, you can have playlist. You can have different inputs. Is not just you tied to your mobile smart device or most of time, your mobile phone. Also going to be discussing about ideas using rebrand lee, which is a service I absolutely love, which takes you are else shorts them to a shelter link, but having them in a short little matter that you can share them and remember them easily while you're doing your live stream. So let's get into this. 2. 1.1 - quickstart guide and settings: these. This is for setting up your RT MP details are TMP is the protocol for doing live video on the on the web. It was invented by Macromedia, which the guys that brought us flash don't hold that against them and it's been around for a long time. Take note off your publishing you are l and your stream name. This is linked to your account. I'm gonna get into this in a minute with a little video that I did from my iPad of the settings panel. But these are the things that you need to know straight away. To be able to get up and running on the platform, you set up your publishing point in your encoded settings. So you're going to see that in slide more point through in a second. This is the video rate. If you're just literally firing up this course because you want to know the settings for periscope producer is not as easy as just getting a r t M P stream address and your log in and password, which most are TMP services in the most RT MP services. Just ask for your log in and your passwords built toe Authenticate. The video rate is 800 KPs. Audio is 64 k P s, 30 frames per 2nd 7 20 PM Key frame interval to very specific settings for periscope, unlike something like YouTube or Facebook, like if you want to get the details, you could go to going live dot link forward slash periscope dash producer That sign ups are It's a bit long, and you have the usual email for your Twitter account. Otherwise, they activate the email that you fill. The form in this form is a request for direct to periscope to be able to get access to it on your account. 3. 1.2 - benefit of using the periscope platform: competitor. The platforms live video is integrated directly into Twitter. So, for instance, if you go and put something out on YouTube or on Facebook, it notifies people in your new stream. It notifies people on on YouTube, but if they're not actively in that program, then they probably won't hear about it all. The body won't see where is when you publish something on periscope. There's a couple of things that happened. One your soc in line on Twitter. The second thing you see is on the left hand side of Twitter profile. You can see that somebody's periscope is life, and it's all integrated, so you can actually bed that tweets with the live video streaming in different platforms. So this is really specifically if you have a existent periscope audience. And if you want to embed the in line tweets, it's building on existing audience that you probably already have on Periscope Humano have used it for a long time, or you might fix to just having your mobile phone. Now you have the capability to stream into it. Desktop on. The powerful thing about this is that a lot of people have periscope installed on their iPad on their smart device. They use it once in a while. What's great is that there is push notifications when you go live. So if you have somebody who is following you in the want to know when you go life, they ultimately get push notification when you're going live, which you don't get really from YouTube lives or YouTube or Facebook life. So that's a nice little benefit if you're trying to capture that on demand real time audience that that Twitter kind of caters for. Like I said, there's a Twitter profile Live indicated went streaming, which says View on periscope. You have to link this up. So have a look in your twitter settings to make sure that you have that displayed on the left hand side of your profile on your Twitter page, Every your Twitter profile page and you'll see it with your life. You see a little icon, which is flashing red to tell people that you actually live on periscope and they could jump through into that life stream, which is a nice little touch. Also, the periscope audience is very much an on demand audience, I find, so if you're suddenly at an event or a conference, or you want to fire up and have a conversation with people. I find that the immediacy of periscope is the access to conversation, the harting dropping of comments, more of a familiar environment for people to have a conversation. Whereas YouTube chat is not really something that I actively go in and use Facebook, I'm not really always wanted to comment in the comment box. There different networks and different groups of people. So I wouldn't probably comment on one platform where, as I would on periscope periscope is more accessible. And if you haven't existent audience over there, then having daily contact going out there having pre made schedule shows, you're gonna have an audience that are gonna pop into that and engage with it. That's the most thing. That's the most important thing. Here is the engagement of its audience, used to drop in on communicating in one stop location, very much platform that came along and knocked meerkat off its throne 4. 1.3 - screencast for wirecast/obs settings: Okay, so I want to quickly show you the settings for both white cast on O. B. S. So in wire cast, if you go to apple settings on got oneself settled here for the arty MP server, you can just click on add and select or TMP server. When you do that, you have to put in the additional settings. So, for instance, here I've created one called periscope Andi. I've created a separate profile. I started off of the base profile and then created a custom one. You get the address. The are TMP address from inside the app. Like the previous instructions in the course, you put your stream key here. I've not put my string key here, obviously, because I don't want you using it. But you put your stream key here that is generated when you click on the additional sources button inside a periscope. If you click here next thing encoding, click on edit, then you'll see. That's a bunch of settings here, and you have to set these exactly as the document. 12 hours 80 by 7 20 So 7 20 p streaming 30 French Second. This is quite a kind of a crucial setting 800 KPs. I don't think they're like sending more than 800. The quality I left is it waas and then the key frame, and it says in the document for two frames every key frame, every two frames, which I'm not quite sure why. But I put it in there anyway. And then, Lastly, don't forget to put it a 64 KPs on the audio encoding at the bottom and save that as a preset when you go to stream. If you click on this stream button in wire cast, what will happen in the APP is that pop up and show that there's a natural stream. And then, from there you can do the usual thing on periscope, which is to go live with stream. One thing I will say is, I've not found a way to turn off your locations. I'd be very careful if you're streaming from somewhere. Probably use a VPN or something instead to change your address because it does doesn't seem to be a setting once you do a broadcast this way in periscope for that, so say Mazo BS click on Preferences on O. B s that this is the free version of, ah, life dreaming application of Khan for Dwight casts just two places that you need to set stream. So the your L here is for your periscope link that shows you an additional sources in the app on your stream key and then output. If you change that from output mode from simple to advanced, then you can go and change all the settings in here. The rate control encoder, that thes sizing bit rate everything else. It's exactly the same, just the menus or in a different place. 5. 1.3a - settings on ipad for periscope: so just quickly haven't look here. This is a little screen cast I did of my iPad. You just go into your profile settings and then click on the settings. Every scroll down here, you'll see that there's advanced sources and you have to create an additional source in here. And then when you do that, what you get is the primary server girl on a stream name, and you need both of those to be able to stream into periscope in the screen. Cash. You're going to see me have done that. I've actually put those settings in tow. Y Castano Bs project of actually logging in using those things in the periscope out, you need to go to profile settings, navigate to advance sources, create additional source hit that you're actually creating a source from your desktop streaming application for you to stream into Paris coat. So it's an interesting way that they've done it. I'm not sure if it's easy for the masses, but I think what you've done it once and tested it, I think you'll find it's quite easy. It makes a customs stream when you create this additional source, and you need that able to stream into. They do their authentication a little bit different. Know that that's advance source that you see on the screen. It's gone now because obviously I don't want people logging into using my account. Do not share your details you find with other people. I made a completely new stream point after I made this screen cast. 6. 1.4 - the start, middle and the end of a show: So let's talk about shows A little bit seems like obvious, but you need to start middle and an end. So you need to storyboard that show idea in trailer if you just fire up your white castings Thought talking about something, Yes, that might have a limited amount of re. But if you want to start having engagement and people coming back on a daily or weekly basis, you really need to think about this in terms of how festivals have music events were they have people behind the scenes stage managers production. This guy here on the right, doing all the audio video graphics, probably doing the lighting, actually. And you need to storyboard the idea so that you've got all the graphics, all the assets, all the topics, the people that you want to talk to and make sure that you've gotta start middle and end. What does this start look like? How you gonna finish your show? How long is the show going to go for kind of obvious stuff. If you want to start toe, have that engagement on a regular basis, you need to have a former to that show. The one thing that you could do is you could use, appear in tow, have multiple people on screen and captured the screen. And you could share that as a as a virtual screen share through y cast into Paris coating, actually just streaming a conversation with more people. It's now possible to use periscope platform in the audience for things like Webinars. How cool would it be to fire up and just do a webinar on the periscope? And of that group of people just sitting on the side, they're giving you advice or asking you questions. Think is a great platform to do things like that. It opens up so much more possibilities. You could have a multi cam. You not just confined to having one cam. You could do a 24 7 stream. You could do scheduled programming. So you you do a show at 11 o'clock every day or once a week, and also you have all the benefits and things like better audio filter in Better Mike's better audio Michael. Two or three people just have a better streaming experience that were used to is instead of like the shaky camera and a mono mike and the bad quality image you can actually curate of lot of the things stay around for and engage for in a good quality video cast. You can enhance that with overlays, updating RSS feeds, tweets and links So interactive things happening on the screen. I find one of the biggest issues with video streaming is that it gets a little bit monotonous and the topics you don't know what the topics are. You don't if you jump into a stream halfway through, you know what's happening before you want more information. Somebody telling you about webinar or have to do something or even showing you on the screen now to do something, we want to be able to recall it later. Seven. A link to that. Lots of people asking things in the chat that just strolling by that you can't possibly ask causes only just used to being proactive about some of that information will speed things up. And I get into that in the next slide 7. 1.5 - using shortlinks for instream: so short links. There's a lot, so there's lots of services out there that do short links, but I tend to use one called Rebrand Lee. These days we Brandley dot com Short links are your friend If you can remember your short links like going live dot link, forward slash YouTube is my link to go straight to my streaming profile on YouTube. If you can remember them off the top of your head, and you could drop those in or even use something like text expander shift and watch YouTube or Y T. Even so, like three characters and it just post the link into the chat wire on your mobile. Even then, it's easy to share. Easy to remember, you don't have to necessarily go digging around for linked while you're doing your show. What I would suggest you do with that is link up all your social accounts all you call to actions for maybe your newsletter list or even a your event schedule so you could keep in events schedule on something like Google Calendar to let people know when you're gonna do the show, get them to subscribe to it. When they subscribed to that they get push notifications. And I think what I'm trying to say with all of this for the last couple of slides is that you've got to consider the amount of time that the viewer is spending with you. And you've got to respect that time to show up and engaged to stay there, there, obviously there because they're interested in what you have to say. Or maybe they just got a been a free time to respect their time. Ask them questions. Make sure that you're aware of that remote audience. You're not just talking into a camera in a vanity ego way you're actually wanting toe have , I presume, a dialogue back and forth with the people who are watching things that weren't really well that don't get done. A lot are live. Interactive polls Donations worked very well. Have been watching a lot of twitch dot TV streamers doing playing games, and they're getting $5.10 dollars $50 donations from people as they stream, and also they set targets of how many subscribers they want. By the end of the night, it just adds an extra layer for the viewers so that they can interact so they can take part so they can support you. And it's been really interesting to watch. If you had told me when I was a kid that you'd be able to play games and get pay for it, I would have told you were reliable. It seems to be that that's the thing that we're moving into today. So I also use smart, your elder. I t whence sometimes have issues with my links shortening package, so I use other ones as well. Smart. You are elder. I t has always been good. Is my back up allows changing also of existing short link. So if you have a link and you want to change it to your legs, newsletter relates to episode. You can actually go in there and change the link while the shortening remains the same. People always got to shore ling, but the content behind it changes 8. 1.6 - take part in the project: don't forget to take part in the project. It really helps amplify the course. It helps me get some move the rankings of the algorithm, more projects that get added to the more people that take part more people that share it, more people that retweet it, the better my courses get exposure to get exposure, get more premium sign ups, get pretty new science. We're gonna use periscope as a target destination instead of something like YouTube or Facebook. This is great for people who have a massive network on periscope Twitter. Because all in line is all integrated. You can bet that live streams push notifications is really good in terms of interactive engagement, three new and the potential viewer.
