About This Class

Taking the time to "see like a photographer" is a great way to instantly improve the quality of your photographs. Improving your understanding of composition will create an instant difference in the quality of your images.

In this class, students will learn to see and think about differences in light, as well as many of the basic rules of composition. We will practice these skills by completing a series of challenges. In the end, each student should have a set of images that demonstrate the different rules, but are also fun and interesting images for their portfolios.

Some of the rules of composition we will cover are:

  • Rule of Thirds
  • Leading Lines and Curves
  • Line and Form
  • Framing
  • Repeaing Element or Pattern
  • Symmetry
  • Texture and Detail

The focus of this class is to get out shooting, practicing, and improving your skill. The best way to learn photography is to accept the challenge and get out and practice!

Nice reminder of seeing photos, esp. lines, shapes, & patterns. The class is a little mis-named--I thought it was ti be about light, but it is mostly about composition. It's worth a look, though.
Good class, especially if you are just starting out.

Kristin Savko

eLearning Developer, Photographer, Designer

I graduated with a BA in art from Millersville University and began my career working in a photo lab where I helped customers improve, print, and share their photographs, as well as taught classes in basic photography skills, composition, and techniques for six years. I am passionate both about my art and education.

I am a freelance photographer and designer, owning my own business Kristin Savko Photography and Design telling stories with my camera at weddings, family gatherings, and portrait sittings.  You can also check out my blog, Crafting Play, for a mix of photography, graphic design, interior design, art, the importance of the arts for children, and other pieces of the creative puzzle.

At my day job, I am an eLearning developer and part of the curriculum development team, at Applied Educational Systems, where I create visuals for online content and play around with lots of new technology and techniques.
