About This Class
This class is for anyone who wants to learn more about designing beautiful and simple iOS apps. Whether you’re an app designer and are curious about how we do things from the ground up or you’ve never designed an app before, you’re sure to take something away from this course.
UPDATE: This class is based on the iOS 6 standards - if you're looking for newer, cutting edge updates, this may not be what you want. This focuses more on basics.
What You'll Learn
- Intro and Downloading Assets. We've compiled a list of assets for you to download and get familiar with to prep for your project.
- Skecthingg and Working the Grid. We'll go from initial sketching to working on the computer and understanding the Apple suggested grid.
- Choosing Navigation. We'll discuss the importance of intuitive navigation design and uncover best practices.
- Designing the App. We'll walk you through our final designs and explain how both our functional and design choices work together.
Student Ben Hsu's project.
What You'll Make
We’ll start with a downloadable toolbox of goodies to work with and expand that into the PSD elements necessary to skin a functional app. You’ll get access to the resources and standards we use, and most importantly, you’ll be able to use these assets and standards to style your own custom app screens and complete a simple 2-3 screen app mockup.

Highly recommended class for aspiring app and other type of UI designers. Start with something small and way your way to building your next big thing.
I’ve been designing for iOS since 2010 when I began working on my first big project, Yardsale. This app was heavily rooted in the iOS 6 style and was released in the heyday of skeumorphic design. This project familiarized me with the app design process and provided a lot of information about how I could better work with a team and design better wireframes and mockups for engineers.
My next big project was working on the popular app Tinder. I designed and transitioned the app from iOS 6 to iOS 7 alongside designer Chris Gulczynski. This project was really valuable in teaching me that many of the bells and whistles that accompanied the iOS 6 design style are not necessary in creating a beautiful and solid app. I’m now working on a new project and once again designing for iOS using the newest styles and experimenting with ideas that will hopefully push the boundaries of mobile design.
