About This Class
Mending is an essential life skill that anyone can learn and everyone should know. Being able to mend clothes can help you save money and live more sustainably... and of course help you avoid a wardrobe malfunction!
The project for this class is a beginners guide to patching holes in clothes or other textiles without a sewing machine. Patching can extend the useful life of a favourite garment, maintain a treasured heirloom or add playful embellishments.
I’ll be teaching the basics of hand-sewing; skills our grandparents were taught as children so they are super easy for absolute beginners to learn. No previous experience is necessary and you don’t require a sewing machine. All you’ll need is a needle and thread, and a pair of scissors. One of those free little sewing kits that might be tucked away in a drawer is perfect for this project.
I’m a craft artist who has been hand-sewing, mending and creating with textiles since I was a child. These skills are easy to learn and relaxing to practice, while saving you money and reducing your ecological footprint, so please join me in The Art of Mending.

Sustainable life skills can help you to increase your resilience and reduce consumer dependency. They include practical, transferable skills that are easy to learn and require no, or few, special tools or materials... such as mending clothes by hand. They also include 'meta-skills' to help you take the next step towards a more sustainable lifestyle... for example, establishing a Gardening Habit. Meliors writes regularly about sustainable life skills (and about being a Skillshare teacher) at www.meliors.net
Meliors is also an artist, and writer who has been making and exhibiting textile arts and artists books since 2004. You can see her textile art in her Gallery website. You can view and purchase some of her editioned books and one off textiles in her Etsy shop. You can dip into nearly a decade of Meliors's blogging at Bibliophilia.
