Yarnbombing is a form of street art that involves covering an object in public with knitting, crocheting, or simply just a bunch of yarn.  It is temporary and easily removed, so it is a way to make a statement without having to worry about the consequences of many other forms of street art.

By taking this class you will learn about the yarnbombing movement around the world and how you can become involved. 

This class will be taught with self paced online lessons, which will include:

  • how to select a great object to yarnbomb, taking into consideration the practicality, message, and feasibility of the project  
  • how to collect accurate measurements and create a pattern for your project.  
  • a refresher course in the basics of knitting and crochet (for those that are interested)  
  • details of installing a yarnbomb, from crew to time
  • how to document and share your yarnbomb

This class is great for knitters, crocheters, yarn enthusiasts, street artists, artists, grandparents, non-grandparents, teachers, neighbors, community activists, people with a sense of humor, and positive folks interested in brightening their surroundings!

1. Intro to Yarnbombing: - So we're going to start with an introduction into yarn bombing, - and I'm basically going to give you the definition of yarn bombing a little bit about the - culture and the history on how it's used to benefits community and different things like - that. - So the first thing is that I kind of define your bombing. - It's any type of fibrous material that's used in a public space. - I'm considered public. - Art or street are generally temporary installations, - and it doesn't just have to be knitting or crochet. - A. - So you don't have to knit or crash a Teoh. - Take this course and to also understand how to your mom. - Because I have seen people wrap yarn around objects and they actually I There's great - artists and hot tea in Minneapolis who has actually created a canvas out of your own by - wrapping string between two poles and creating a flat campus and then painting on it with - stencils spray things that just pretty awesome. - So there's many different ways that you can use it. - You can also see latch, - hook artwork, - and I've seen embroidering, - and I've seen fabric incorporated into a time bomb. - I've also seen people knit with recycled plastic bags. - Um, - just any anything that's considered, - you know, - could be made into a yarn and then made into a project would be considered. - Um, - it's fairly novel is only about 10 years old. - I'm a little bit less than that. - A woman, - a mob Passaic who goes by the name of Nitta, - please, - in Austin, - Texas. - She had a young shop, - and she decided to get the door handle on her yarn shop door. - And people just loved it. - They heated up. - She got a lot of really good reception. - And so she kind of thought that maybe she could go into the community and starting. - Our mom and other things were knitting other things. - And the term comes from the term bomb, - which is used to like in terms of your spray paint something So it's more of a street art - and graffiti term that it's big coin yarn bombing because of that. - So that's where it's derivative comes from, - and let's see so it doesn't necessarily have to be outside in a public space. - Generally it ISS, - but I've also young bombed inside of a school inside my own home and inside buildings, - anything like that could be considered a your mom. - It's basically using knitting in an unconventional way or generally to wrap around another - object that already exists. - And I mean, - these are really loose definitions because you can create a step. - I have made a stuffed animal and completely created the entire animal and cover another one - . - I just made it from scratch and tied it into a tree, - and it was makes it a yarn bomb. - So you know, - the definitions kind of loose, - but it's essentially using fiber in public spaces. - Or, - you know, - like if I get something, - I have his chair back here, - if you can see it. - But I yarn bombed it, - and that's really like a loose definition, - because I don't really know if it's considered a young mom because it's in my house and - it's not really a public space. - I don't really have a lot of visitors, - either, - so you know, - it's not really, - like, - probably not holding our mom, - but that's what I'm gonna call it, - because I don't really have another term for it right now. - So you know the definition is loose and you can take it for what it ISS, - But generally it's a group of people or a single person that goes out into the community - and cover something with yarn in some way or fashion. - And, - like I said before, - doesn't have to be young, - and it could be recycled products as well. - So now actually would make it more of a permanent installation if it's made from some kind - of wire or, - you know, - plastic bags or something like that. - Um, - they do your mom it all over the world, - And I think it's a really great movement because ST are in general, - has kind of been moving away from this traditional mediums like scrapie and central - replacing, - which has been going on since the sixties. - Uh, - and that kind of moving away from that now and using unconventional materials. - So I've seen or gone ministry are I've seen she are made with aluminum cans. - I've seen birdhouses place, - an unusual spot and different things like that, - and it's kind of just plays into that movement of using unconventional materials in a - public space. - And what's great about it is it really gives, - though not all yard bombers are women, - and I would never want to make it exclusive to women. - Knitting generally is considered a woman's craft or stereotype stereotypically feminine. - And I've actually, - though I hate that there's anything stereo typically this or that. - I have used it to my advantage to kind of prove that you know, - women can be in the world of ST Iran and public art. - A lot of Times Street artist specifically are usually men, - and you know, - they have had to go and take a lot of risks and be able to climb crazy places. - I'm so generally it's been men, - and I mean, - you know, - there's a really well known famous whipped female street artists, - but this is kind of a way to mocking Lee say women can be street artists, - because here is this really typically feminine craft that were placing in a public space - and, - you know, - claiming it with knitting and knitting are claiming it with this spending craft. - So it's kind of been a movement to give women on identity in the street were off because - it's not. - You know, - a lot of times when women want to be considered equal by the men will do as men do, - so you know, - female street artists will start spray painting or doing we pasting or something that's - kind of traditional with, - I think, - many cultures and many different profession hobbies. - This kind of goes the same way on. - And I think what's interesting about your mom ing is like it's it's not trying to be like - them. - I mean, - it's using their space and utilizing the same public areas, - but doing it in a way that's really unique on specific Teoh their abilities and to what's, - you know, - stereotypically feminine. - I think it's a great way to involve a large audience, - I think, - because we've been socialized to believe that street art is generally a criminal act. - And I mean it is a criminal act in a lot of places in a lot of different ways, - you know. - But the idea of somebody with spray paint, - you know, - spray can, - you know, - we think of them in a dark hoodie with the hood up and they're hiding and they're trying - not to get caught. - And I got to go out late at night on and you know, - so that's kind of what we've thought a street artists and graffiti artists and I think it's - given yarn bombing has been able to give ST are the opportunity for people to understand - that, - you know, - it's it's not just these criminals, - you know, - and they're not criminals. - I mean, - they are breaking the law, - but really, - they're just artists, - and, - you know, - they might not do things that everybody respects. - But you can't and respect everybody and everything that you do. - You just have to follow your heart. - And so I think it's been able Teoh open the eyes of people to see Street are in a different - and maybe less threatening way, - you know, - because it's very welcoming. - It's straight up, - fuzzy and warm and cozy. - Literally. - It is a cozy on object, - so it kind of feeds that definition. - And I don't know. - I think it's just a way Teoh engage a large audience. - So you have, - you know, - knitters. - You have grandmothers, - you have, - you know, - they have been knitting of the lives. - You have Children who doesn't love bright colors and have a sweater from grandma or Grandpa - . - Whoever made them, - um, - you know, - something special hand. - You know, - it also is a lot of public art that we see me because it has to be permanent and withstand - weathering. - It's usually very bland colors that fit into the background. - You know, - wood, - metal, - different things like that that are usually break the color until your mommy gives an - opportunity to bring some other colors into our public sphere. - And so when you do young mom, - I really encourage you to use really bright colors. - I think that that's one of the biggest take away messages I would want you to receive is - right in your community, - you know? - I mean, - this is really a taste factor, - and this is my own personal opinion. - But I, - you know, - generally enjoy seeing bright colors more than I want to see a brown or white knitted - object. - It can be very beautiful, - and I can be tastefully done. - But if you're trying to make a statement as to like, - Hey, - with this, - I strongly suggest using bright colors and eso when I dio dio knitting, - I tend and I say anything because that's generally what I do. - But you know, - I'm not trying. - It's just a blanket term for all your I generally use, - um, - less expensive yard that is non organic because the organic yarns will break and fall apart - more easily and weathering, - and the colors will also fade more quickly. - So I generally use, - you know, - a super saver yard. - That's acrylic, - and they tend to make those in more bright colors, - and they tend to be a lot cheaper, - which is great because you're kind of making a disposable objects like you. - Sometimes you can go back to collect. - Your mom wants your, - you know, - finished having it in public, - but most of the time they kind of get disposed of. - And so you want to consider that your budget, - Um, - see if there's anything that I can give you an introduction in the mind, - It's done all over the world, - which is really great, - and, - you know, - it seems like it's kind of this. - There's so many different people that do it, - and there's so many different reasons why people do it. - You know, - some people are trying to make a political statement, - while other people are trying to enhance their community by engaging the community in the - projects. - You know, - whether wanted your mom a bridge, - for example, - well, - then they can ask people for submissions throughout the town that can have town meetings. - Town groups, - right, - get together and they can knit and sew things together. - And it's really this way to bring community, - you know, - into a cohesive unit and work together to create this beautiful piece of art. - Um, - and you know, - it's kind of been away for fibre artists to really just join a new realm off work in a new - area that we can complete work in. - And it gives us the freedom to be able to make work whenever and wherever we want. - Teoh. - So those are some things that I want you to take away. - It's just that, - you know, - like your mommy is really. - I mean, - what's fascinating and what I love about street art is that it's unsolicited, - which means you're totally free to make whatever you want. - You know, - like you don't have any rules. - You don't have any restrict. - Chan's don't have anything to consider. - It's really, - you know, - coming from your own heart. - And you know, - you really have the freedom to decide what exactly it is that you're dio. - So for this class, - the things that we will go over our, - um, - how to select your target and things to consider one when you are selecting a target. - So just for example, - like, - what kind of objects are going easy, - Didn't it? - Are they gonna be visible things like that? - Then I'm going to teach you how to measure your piece on. - Then I will talk about how to create the net a piece. - I'm gonna provide some links for videos for knitting and crochet. - A. - If you guys need a refresher on, - then I will show you guys have actually installed peace and how to market the wet. - So sit back and enjoy. - Things to Consider when Selecting the Perfect Target: - today's class, - we're gonna talk about things that you are gonna want to consider when choosing your young - mountain target. - Whatever my target is, - the objects in the environment that you want to young. - Usually this, - especially in the beginning. - Excuse my dog. - In the beginning, - this could be a bike rack. - This could be street time tree. - You know something that will let you easily complete apiece while also improving the - environment. - And you can also, - you know, - your mom something and leave it in the environment. - If you want a yarn, - bomb a table or chair and bring it into the environment. - That's also your choice. - Um, - but you know, - selecting a target. - There's just a few things that I want you to consider. - So the first thing that will discuss is your mission statement or like what kind of message - you want to get across your mom. - Then secondly, - Way will talk about visibility and marketability of the work, - and lastly, - we'll talk about feasibility, - which is probably the most important part, - basically helped practical, - is it? - And how easy will it be, - Yard mom or first, - how difficult? - So the first thing I will talk about is the mission statement or whatever it is that you - want your your mom to say and you want other people to interpret. - I think that if you're trying to make a political statement, - our social statement environmental, - etcetera, - no, - you're going to want to consider either maybe not so much the object that your mom, - but what you put on the mom. - So if you want to write something on a picture on their incorporate fabric, - anything that you know you want to do, - that's gonna help you accomplish your mission on your message. - It's something to consider when you want to consider the actual object that your mom as - part of the message, - you need to make sure that it really works and mess. - It meshes with your message. - So, - for example, - if you want to put a sweater on a statue and you want to make a statement about particular - or make a political statement, - you know if you are anti Republican and you want Teoh, - you know young bomb a statue, - you're not going to want to get my mom a statue of Martin Luther King unless, - like you're trying to celebrate. - So basically it's like you're trying, - Teoh, - make sure that the object that you yard bomb coincides with what you're trying to do. - And sometimes, - you know, - you have to also think about the fact that maybe you don't necessarily have a message. - You just want to put a sweater on statue. - But you have to understand, - like what might be interpreted from that and because this is a public art piece on. - And so I think it's really important to consider the public when we think about our project - and think about the impact that it's gonna have on a community. - So those are just like some really basic things consider. - I mean, - I'm I'm sure that you guys have thought about this already. - It's just something that I have to put out in Different, - basically, - is just saying you want to make sure that whatever your your mommy, - you know, - if you want to send a message about I don't know. - Sometimes I like Teoh sent a message about the antiquity of some objects in our life that - still exists. - So I will your mom, - a pay phone or a mailbox or something that's like pretty relevant yet somehow still barely - functional And so I will pick those kind of address on purpose because that's like the - message that I'm trying to get across eso different things like that. - You know, - it's just kind of like, - what makes you tick? - What makes you want your mom on and consider that when you're selecting your object that - you're gonna cover, - then secondly, - what I would stress is visibility is very important, - and I think it's really important to find a place that your yard bomb is going to get. - A large audience is essentially a public art project, - like I said a few minutes ago, - so you want to make sure that it's visible. - You want to make sure that people are gonna be able to see it on DSO. - I think it's you know, - I think in the beginning it can be a little scary. - I know that I was very scared beginning I put my first little young mom. - Excuse me? - My first, - your mom That's big onto a bike rack in downtown Center city, - Philadelphia, - and I was terrified shaking in my boots. - I, - you know, - didn't know. - What time did you do it? - I didn't know anything like this but I knew the best place to do it would be downtown - Philadelphia, - that in some obscure residential neighborhood where only a few people who walk their dogs - around the blacker coming home from work I'm gonna see it. - So I wanted to make sure that I put in a specific place. - And, - of course, - it was really scary at first. - And it is scary, - but it's worth it. - And it isn't a scary as you think it ISS. - After the first two or three times yarn bombing, - I was completely comfortable any time a day. - It's pretty outrageous. - So I would consider high visibility because basically, - it's like you have to think about like the fact that you are doing this as an artist. - Every artist becomes well known because of the audience and the people that are paying - attention. - You know any singer needs fans, - you know, - celebrities, - everything. - You know there are artists and they need an audience on, - so so do you as a young mom, - and so that's important to think about. - It's always important to consider the audience. - I think that, - um, - a lot of artists maybe don't do that so much because they're afraid that they're gonna - compromise their mission or, - you know, - like their integrity in some way. - But it's really not. - I mean, - like, - we are all part of a culture and a group in a society and on way all function, - and we want other people to take our opinions into consideration on DSO. - I just think it's important to not isolate yourself, - especially if this is something that you want people to receive you well for like you want - people to like your work, - you know, - then don't forget about on. - That's not to say I really think it's a fine line when you know you're doing work for other - people and not for yourself and, - you know, - being able to integrate the two. - I know it's a fine line, - but you also have to understand that you're not gonna compromise. - You don't have to compromise yourself to consider other people. - You know, - it's just kind of like How can I do what I love that other people will like also because - really, - you're having is a community project That's another important thing. - I don't know. - I think that you know, - some people might not feel that way, - but I personally do. - I feel like once the artwork is out of my hands, - no longer belongs to me. - It's not mine anymore. - And so I feel like it's really important to consider the audience when I your mom and this - also really means how we're going to see it. - When I started yarn bombing, - how I became well known is that I started doing projects in the Center City Philadelphia - area when I would do projects in neighborhoods, - I noticed that you know, - they weren't getting onto blocks and, - like people more taking pictures of them and they weren't getting noticed. - And they were really fulfilling emotionally because, - you know, - I knew that these weren't the well traveled areas or there is that get a lot of publicity. - But, - you know, - that's why I did it in those areas for certain projects because, - you know, - I wanted to benefit the community somehow. - Just give back in some way that house, - but in terms of, - you know, - career name or like, - you know, - becoming a well known artist. - It is better for me. - It was better for me to do projects and more visible areas, - So if you are no living somewhere, - Maybe. - I mean, - I lived in the urban area when I started, - So I don't you know, - if you're living in a suburban area, - where do people go to eat a lot where people travel? - One of the main rose, - you know, - Is there a street sign? - Everybody sees anything like that. - So just thinking about where people kind of congregate or passed by. - I know I used to really think about how many drivers would see my piece. - So sometimes you know, - like it's better to do a piece on a freeway where it's like, - not really that nice visibly if you're pedestrian. - But so many people drive by every day that it's kind of worth it on actually really highly - visible. - So those are things to consider with that, - it's really important that people see the arm so that you can get your message across. - Really? - And so the last thing that I want you guys to consider when picking a target is how - practical it's gonna be A on this, - this can be tough. - I mean, - this is really like a project by project kind of determination, - you know, - especially as you get more complicated objects, - it becomes less clear how easy and feasible it's gonna be. - But it's extremely important. - I've seen so many times where people have yarn bombed the streets on, - but they haven't attached it to sign or given it anyway for the committing to stay up on - DSO at the first rain or when it's windy, - just falls right down and becomes this motion pile at the bottom of the poll. - And that kind of does away with any message that you're trying to send. - I never think a young bomb is, - you know, - ugly or a waste. - I never think that. - But I mean, - I have. - I heard it, - um, - you know, - So when this kind of like this big pile, - it's like he did all this work and you want it to be appreciated to the fullest extent that - can be So I think it's important to execute the peace well, - and so that's the first lesson right there is that they're going to hang knitting croquet - on an object that's vertical. - You need to attach it so that it doesn't fall down so that you can hold it out and it hangs - on its own. - Good thing to look for. - If you're thinking about doing a cold IHS, - some stop signs and street signs have holes throughout the whole whole kind of going all - the way down, - and that's perfect. - You could just so it right through those holes into the pole. - And that's like a great and fantastic way. - Have you been in a tree a great way? - Tree bark is kind of special because knitting just sticks to it. - I mean, - it will eventually roll ways you need to attach it, - but it is great, - like, - especially if you're doing like a big round objects sometimes flab around, - trying to sew it up, - and you need a partner with tree. - It's like you just stick it on there and it just holds itself in place. - And it's great. - However, - it will eventually find out. - So you're gonna need to attach the knitting somehow with a top grant. - You know you have stuff on the never branches coming out, - so you don't want to make sure that you're attached to one of those branches on. - And all this means is you can even just have a few strings, - like if you only want to get the trunk, - and that's all you did. - You still just wanna have, - like, - a few strange. - Maybe even you only need to double it up, - really your piece of young and just wrap it around the branch and then, - you know, - attach it like kind of tie or not into your knitting or crochet A that you have wrapped - around the truck. - And it's best to do this, - especially tree, - cause then it might fall on the other side, - so it's best wrapped around the other. - You know, - another branch or too many branches as you can, - probably best for you to stay up straight. - This is kind of the best way if you don't have that kind of option, - you know, - street sign, - for example, - or a parking meter. - In the very beginning, - I used to do that parking meters. - Great. - It's very small, - you know, - only about three feet tall on. - Then it's usually you just kind of rap the knitting around the parking meter, - and, - you know it doesn't have to look nice. - Make it so it's still usable. - So put the change in there. - But other than that, - I go to town and just wrap it around them, - and that way it will stay up, - will fall down. - Um, - let's see. - This can get a little computed. - I mean, - some objects like those are pretty straightforward. - But once you get into more like odd shaped objects and statues and stuff, - sometimes it's difficult. - I mean, - at least it won't be so straight up and down like a poll. - I'm trying to think of an example, - but it's probably mostly like a statue, - something where you know, - like everything's kind of connected to each other. - There's enough. - There's nothing really, - like wrap it around. - There's nothing to hold it there for you. - So what I usually do is I won't make like a really tight at the end make a really tight - like single crow Shea Jr to kind of give it like a little like X flicks, - you know, - a little elasticity up top on and kind of make it tight. - And where sometimes I mean, - I just like you did it with smaller knitting can also do like a small little garter stitch - or no rid or something where you know. - But I think that Cochet looks the best single Cochet edging and kind of just like, - you know, - stick there. - Let's see, - when it comes to feasibility really have to consider. - Can you wrap all the way around? - I mean, - it's kind of the easiest and, - like, - best yard bomb, - practicality wise is just like a nice rectangle that you can wrap around and sew up the - edges. - So that's like a pole, - a bike rack, - any kind of pole are any kind of square object or, - uh, - cubicle. - I'm sorry. - Uh, - anything like that. - That's kind of the best, - cause you know that all four sides are gonna go all the way around and you can just sew it - up easily. - Eso that's the best thing you think about this when I say a rectangle with poll, - what I'm saying is like you're essentially taking a scar and wrapping it around the pole. - So when you take it off the pole and you make it to D is really just a flat scar that's - wrapped around. - So those are obviously use these pieces to make the same thing with the tree Trump. - You know it's a circle, - but when you put it Pete to D, - it's just a big blanket. - Basically, - until that something is these things too? - Um, - you want Teoh? - Make sure that I think an object come stay away from is so something like some people have - asked me to do pillars or the big things that are sticking out of the ground. - It's great if they're columns and they're going from the bottom all the way to the top. - And But if they're like, - you know, - they had been asked to do some where they, - um kind of like two or three feet tall and they're like big squares. - And then they just are like all of the bottom is just like a big square. - It was right to cement bottom. - Well, - how am I gonna really prevent my knitting on the ends from just rolling up? - I can't, - really. - I could do the single Cochet on. - It does work, - but honestly, - number one people can steal it or take it off so easily because there's it's not attached - to itself. - It's not attached around the object. - It's simply basically like a grill cover, - you know, - it's like a tart, - really is covering the object on people. - Take will take those off real quick and also, - I mean the single Croce might like edging my work, - but, - I mean, - it's it's it's best to just kind of stay away from that stuff in general. - If you're doing a project that's really fast on, - do you want to do, - like, - a ribbing at the bottom or something then and you want to just take a picture of it? - I'm all for it. - There was in a great big Star Wars piece like that where I don't think it lasts very long - and it wasn't attached anything. - So you're doing something for an event or something like that, - then it will be, - you know, - a great project. - But when you're thinking long term, - you want to make sure that it's kind of attached and and kind of difficult to take off and - also looks good, - you know, - you don't want those ends. - So let's see what else in terms of feasibility, - Um, - I'm just trying to thank Sorry. - Uh, - I guess it's I guess, - really you guys are gonna come up with questions that I'm not thinking off perfectly at the - moment. - I mean, - the most important thing in the very beginning, - it should just make sure that you work is attached because I know that the easiest projects - to do in the beginning our polls entreaties. - And so, - like I said before, - please attach rose to the top. - As things become more difficult and shakes become a little bit stranger, - you just want the really important thing to consider is just that you want to be able to - senior ends together. - You want to be over. - So the whole piece together, - that's the ideal world. - Very rare. - Doesn't always happen, - but like, - for example, - a bike rack, - the two ends of the bike rack. - Because, - like this, - the two ends here. - They're not going to be able to be sewn up with bottom. - But, - you know, - if you do a little crow shape on and do a little ribbing look pretty good and you know, - like the rest of it will sit there and everything will be seen together, - and it will all look nice. - So I would definitely consider what we're gonna do A bike rack for our first project. - But that's something that I would take into consideration. - Uh, - I think from beginning lesson. - That's probably the only thing that you need to consider in terms of feasibility on If you - guys want to do more adventures Project, - please feel free to cut like contact me and actually any questions. - And if you want, - I might even be able to just, - like, - sketch out your first, - um, - project with you. - Like if you're having difficulty or I mean, - if you want to do a more advanced project on, - you need help, - you know, - measuring it and making sure that is going to be a practical project. - Just let me know. - Um, - one more thing I want to take I want you guys to consider is how you're going to make the - peace. - So if you want to do a globe or like around objective, - spherical thing, - you probably are gonna wanna crash A If you enjoy making circles, - admitting more power to you. - But, - you know, - take if you don't have a night and a crow shit, - then use those. - Use that knowledge to your benefit. - So you know, - like, - you know, - it's a lot easier to make odd shapes with crook Shea. - Probably also, - if you want Teoh, - um, - if you don't, - if you can get accurate measurements that crow, - she might be a little bit more beneficial just because, - um hopes so And it might be a little bit more beneficial because, - um, - it stretches easier. - I'm kind of discussed this and in the class that if you know, - you do knitting, - knitting a stretch netting short in that Cochet will do that as well, - but it won't do it as much. - So, - um, - if you other than that like pulls and everything like that, - it's really just your own preference if you I think I'm saying it's faster or knitting is - prettier. - Whatever it ISS, - I was going to get your message across. - Whatever it is that you won't accomplish, - then, - you know, - I just learned that, - you know, - rounded shapes. - I tend to crochet on everything else. - I tend to use this knitting machines I can't make wrecked in use rectangles pretty easily. - So those are things that I want you guys to consider when you are choosing a target. - If you have any questions, - let me know if I left anything out. - Please don't hesitate to ask me and I will see you guys next time. - Bye. 3. Collecting Measurements that contain several pieces: - Okay, - So way are going to you're out how to measure that money. - So I think that you're going to need, - preferably fabric measuring tape, - which easily, - you know, - like those metal take measures are a little bit hard to get around oddly shaped and rounded - objects. - So fabricate, - measuring, - get any craft store. - And, - um, - it's probably the best I also know, - and a pen or pencil so that you can sketch your your piece that you're going to admit - collect measurements on camera. - I choose my smartphone third and take pictures, - sometimes drawling. - Anything like me drawing it's not totally scale are perfect. - Good to have a picture you got back. - So first thing I'll do is just take at pretty much every angle. - I think I'm gonna do is I'm gonna get you have to do is make a sketch large enough and to - scale as much as you need it so that you collect all the measures. - Okay, - So you can see I've got a sculpture before, - and I've only drawn lines. - Um, - you know, - as long as every single piece. - What? - I got the circumference of every piece of that sculpture, - so I didn't really need to draw it in, - you know, - like any type of three d form. - So I'm gonna drive, - treat like branches. - What? - So we have the trunk, - and then it looks like there's a branch coming off over here, - and then we got a stick or branch over here. - So then we have some branches coming up with this one. - So maybe Okay, - and that's really all you have to do. - Um, - and then this is your model for what? - You're gonna collect measurements and you're going to collect. - The circumference are all the way around the branch as well as how long it iss okay. - And so for length, - I usually just mark there, - right? - And so let's get the length of how much will mention. - Sometimes you need a friend or chair ladder to help you. - So I'm gonna do is tallest. - You just if you only want to measure and so far is the second grand you can see coming over - here. - Let's do that. - So we'll make these different pieces, - okay? - And so I grabbed it. - And it's 30 inches, - this branch of which I'm going in it. - If I wanted to do the whole thing I do the whole thing, - but I'm not worried about that. - So that's 30. - Okay. - And so I'm gonna scratch this. - Actually, - it's only gonna be from here to here. - 30 inches, - okay. - And how branch gets wider. - These branches are pretty good because they're pretty much the same with you Get. - Why do you want to measure around at the center part and the wider part just to give - yourself a good idea of how you'll have to increase. - So this one's about I always round up. - Um, - and so it's about 20. - I'm gonna say 21 inches around, - okay. - And what it should be Pretty similar material will stretch enough for that, - and it's actually the same same circumference, - right? - So you've been market. - However, - you feel most comfortable. - But I'm gonna dio 21 inches around because that's just how I think. - Then you're going to do the same thing for all of the branches, - so that's 65 inches. - And then to get like a circumference, - you could do 37 about 37 inches around. - And since it's pretty much the same with measure just to make sure it's actually only 34 - inches of top. - So you dio 37 34 inches around here, - Okay? - And since we already measured from here to here, - you want to make sure to get this part here. - They're all going to be separate pieces that you'll eventually so together going to make - them. - It's about 11 inch 11. - Okay, - About 24. - Okay. - So you get the idea that pretty much the important thing to know is you need to think about - your object in terms of knitted. - So you're going to knit and you're probably only gonna have one scene Me. - It's only so like I saying before measure all the way down here and leave the scene. - And I would wrap the knitting around this way and seem over here and leave an opening for - this other branch and then continue, - which I have done before. - And you can dio if there's more than one branch, - say there's a branch coming out here. - Come out here, - then your scenes are gonna be You only have one scene you need choose, - and you can't really twisted around. - It'll look kind of funny at that point. - You're gonna want to make to separate. - Okay. - Maybe um, - and that's why these are this is not all one piece. - So this will be a separate piece. - This will be a start on it and seen it all together. 4. Collecting Bike Rack Measurements: - all right. - Similar object to measure. - Actually make this in just one piece. - So pretty easy to measure. - Especially the fabric measuring tape. - You could do it. - Modeling metal. - You have to be a little Yeah. - You want to take a picture of it as well? - Sometimes you will think it's bigger than it. - ISS. - Try to remember it. - So you have to drive just okay. - And, - um, - this Cermis signifies how wide it is or how wide around, - just a little markings at the bottom on. - And so, - since it's the same shape all the way around, - all you need to do is measure anywhere. - You'll see that it's about 7.5. - So I'm gonna say that eight inches, - okay? - And then you're gonna measure the length to measure the outside of the object is inside - because that's the longest part that you're gonna have to cover. - So start at the bottom. - So 60 So 60 22 80 to 82 inches long. - So you can sketch anyway you want, - and that's it. - Those are the only two measurements that you have to do to do. - Like, - as I mentioned before, - one of my lessons how if you want to do a poll, - some sports time talking about how some signs happy, - this is a great way to attach your work. - If you're gonna do a vertical, - it needs to be stabilized. - Hold itself up because last time just fall to the ground after a little while. - Scrunch ball of mess. - So you told her Good. - It's great if you have a really long tapestry needle, - because it's pretty wide here, - but you'll see when you're measuring your object, - like how feasible these holes are too hard to get. - There's this here. - All you have to do is wrap a piece of yarn or to around one of those signs, - and it'll stabilize. - Stay still. - Same thing with over here. - This one would stay. - If you do a really tight piece, - it'll stay a little bit more easily just because it's so why. - And it's a little bit, - but still wrap it around either. - See, - there's like space in between below the sign. - He's all the way around the sign. - Whatever is easiest for you to do, - you want to make okay, - and so we have the measurements of the project and next thing to do is make 5. Sewing the pieces together: - So when you are putting together, - you don't really want take a lot of actually stop. - So if there's anything that you for him, - it's better. - So, - for example, - a project right now where I'm wrapping a structure now 40 inches around, - Uh, - I have two pieces because here, - and I'm going to throw them together. - So I just want to show you what I'm doing home. - So that way I don't have to. - I seem on scene so you can kind of see it's just really I just sit on the ground and I - really don't care so much about what's happening to the knitting because it's gonna go - outside, - it's gonna get dirty on. - So it's not really, - like super important that I keep everything pristine and clean. - So I just keep it on the floor on and I have a lot of times scenes will fall apart. - So I began to you double Strand, - Um, - my sewing, - and I have my tapestry needle, - which is kind of like a knitting sewing needle. - It's bigger than a normal sewing needle, - and we're just gonna hand stitched with a really basic overlay stitching. - Um, - so you kind of line your ends up and you just seem together. - You just go. - I go on top. - You can do it If you don't want. - This seems to show up. - Then you can dio your your side stitching, - um, - which we can talk about more specifically later. - And all right, - that's it. 6. Threading your needle and sewing the piece onto the object (bike rack): - Okay, - so he's that I have made. - I know I've mentioned it before. - It's ready to go on. - So my getting back stone, - um, - scissors going to need a tapestry which is much bigger than a normal sewing threading - needles. - Um, - just make sure you want to be able to thread yarn. - You're gonna do something kind of big. - Any craft store. - You can get it at a couple bucks and your possibility yard so that you can read So he's - onto the object. - My for reading for your friend. - It's just like as long as you want to make you see that it's not in your way, - it gets and and it takes for ever pulling through every time spent half kind of manageable - pieces. - So and then So I make What about this long? - And what I'll do is when it runs out, - I'll just tie another piece on and keep going. - So I actually double strand friend to make it more security. - Hold your so I you know the upside and jam it through there and then, - since this is all one objects and I don't have so it to an additional piece, - I just work in the middle the whole time and scrunch down that way. - I hurt my back, - Anything like that. - So then you're gonna wrap it from the ground. - Are you gonna wrap it from underneath to around the tops that you can? - Easily. - So these twos, - this team together, - these two ends And for the first night, - I mean this process you can become if you really want you can make the scene really nice - and intricate when your yarn bombing a lot of time. - Time is of the essence. - And so I just did a simple list sewing that I can't. - Okay. - And I just make, - like, - a really legit not, - um I'm not worried about threading it in or weaving in the ends or anything like that. - You can work on that on the end that all you do is you just pinch two sides together and - you just go over your overlay. - I will post a additional lengths for showing up the scene in case anybody needs to learn. - But you can watch me. - I just go from one side to the other. - Very the most basic sewing stitch. - Um, - so I go and on that side, - out on that side in on the same side, - out on the same side the whole way in on this side, - out on this side. - Okay? - And all I have to do is move the yard down. - Move the knitting down as I complete sound. - When you have different colors like this, - it's nice to have these two ends meet, - right? - So sometimes you just got to make it work, - you consent. 7. Finishing the Yarnbomb: - Okay, - so we are getting to the end here. - Moves along that you didn't have torturously watch that thing. - So we're gonna get to be now, - As you can see, - I scrunch it all up right here because you worked the magic of my practice. - What you're gonna do? - Same thing with a pole or street time. - You have to work in one place, - and then you can stretch it. - The peace once You're okay. - So I'm gonna do a lubna at the very end, - and I double, - not it. - Sometimes there's extra string hanging, - but this is not very steak and secure, - so I'm not gonna use that. - His name. - I'm just gonna double okay. - Quadruple whatever national in it on, - then you gotta trim the point I like. - All right, - I just 8. Using Facebook, Twitter, and Fiber Artist Resources: - Okay, - so I am gonna use this video to show you guys a few different websites that you can utilize - when you are either trying to find a good people to work with or trying to market your work - . - So I'm actually going to take the camera over to the computer and show you a few different - helpful resource is for you to use. - Um, - so first we're talk about Facebook, - which is, - um, - China Focus the video here. - So, - um, - it's a great resource for all sorts of things. - Obviously, - I'm sure you guys have a Facebook. - If you don't, - I would highly recommend it. - Um, - so this is a group page. - So this is one thing that you're gonna have to look up when you want to share your work. - Um, - this is for kind of more like grassroots marketing. - And if you want to be involved in a community, - if you want the knitting community to become like mawr involved and, - um, - in tune with your mom ing, - then looking up knitting groups is a great way. - So I'm gonna provide a list of search terms for you guys to eso. - I'm just, - for example, - gonna look up knitting, - right. - Um, - so I'm going to do the whole word out. - And, - um, - do you see more results? - And you can either find pages or you can find groups. - Now, - groups is recommended because that way, - you know you'll be able to post the law. - And a lot of times, - when you like a page, - then, - um, - your post don't really show up on their home page. - Only the pages posts show up a lot of times, - like the other people that post on the page or kind of put off to the side like I can show - you on mine, - for example. - Um, - so on my page, - you can see all of if it gets there, - all of my posts, - right? - Fishnets, - fishnets, - fishnets They're all mine. - Except for over here. - We have recent posts by others, - and you don't really get to see any images or anything like that. - So a lot of times that is pretty much like all you're going to get if you post on a page. - So groups are a bit more, - um, - user friendly. - So I would say I'll provide that list and basically you can use that to find groups like - how I just showed you When you search for it, - you want to go toe like other and then go to see more results. - In that way, - you can just specifically look for groups and find everything that you want and joined the - ones that you feel like would be helpful for you and your work. - You can look up yarn bombing. - There are some young bombing groups. - Eso I'm going Teoh, - go to a group that I have a part of and you can see that anyone composed and their images - are right there. - So, - um, - and a lot of groups, - if they have a lot of members, - are pretty active, - which is great, - and you get a lot of feedback for your work. - So it's got a lot of bull post like in progress, - work and things like that. - Um okay, - so that's Facebook. - I would utilize it, - and I again I'll provide you guys with a list of terms that you can search for for - different groups. - Andi Hashtags. - Well, - Facebook just started using Hashtags, - so I would take advantage of that. - Um and I will put the hashtags on the notes as well, - because that is how you're gonna use Twitter, - Of course. - So, - Twitter, - um, - I would definitely you can link your facebook and your twitter if you haven't done that - already, - which could be helpful. - And, - um, - with Twitter, - you want to research, - and if you're gonna post the picture of your work, - just use the same hashtags that I have listed below. - Um, - Twitter's pretty great. - It's people are really all about hashtags. - Um, - I actually have not had huge amounts of success on Twitter. - Um, - I guess because maybe like my pred, - I don't have a consistent presence on there. - I just kind of, - um, - post when I have work. - So that's where people who are really in tune with Twitter and know how to use it. - I know that hashtags obviously the best way to go with that, - um when you have work, - you Also, - there's a website called yarn bombing dot com that you definitely want to check out a Mandy - Moore and LeeAnne. - Crain wrote the book yarn bombing. - And, - um uh, - that's definitely that's the book that I picked up. - That's how I discovered yarn bombing is I saw that in a bookstore, - picked it up, - bought it. - And the next day I immediately went out Start er bombing. - So this website they started after the book is kind of like a submissions website and a bit - of a community here you'll be able to see other yard. - Mama is what they're doing. - Some of the first projects. - Um, - okay. - And you can get involved. - And, - uh, - let's say getting Bob looks like they have some events and workshops, - but I believe that there in Canada, - So spire tags really well known you are an artist he doesn't know or Cochet. - So this is something that you might want to consider if you don't know how to do either of - those, - he looks like, - uses nails, - you can use state bowls, - you can use thumbtacks. - You can use anything, - preferably you probably want to work on. - Some would at that point, - um, - calls action. - So this is like a good block to find out where, - um, - you know, - like there's large projects going on where they need submissions. - So you're mounting dot com is a great resource. - I definitely stay involved in that. - You can also check out Raval re dot com r a v e l r y dot com on And I will, - um, - put that in the resource isas Well, - you can follow me. - I am J hems one. - Um, - fishnets was taken. - I don't know who did that. - Um, - it's actually a I have looked her up, - huh? - I don't know who she is. - Eso robberies. - Great. - You can find a lot of people are really active on it. - You conjoined forum. - So I have grilling knitters, - young graffiti mitts for life. - Use some groups that I'm in. - And there forums are places where you can talk and for example, - you know, - where is everyone? - Or like I'm working on another yard mom or something like that, - you can start your own post, - and people can talk with you about it. - So those are things that you'll want to go into groups And these are migrants that I'm in - right now, - But you can search groups by basically using those same search terms that I listed - beforehand in. - The resource is so That's definitely a resource if you want to find knitters in your area. - For example, - when I lived in Philadelphia, - you know, - I would look up like Philly, - Philadelphia, - knitting or Philly knitting, - and I found South Philly Knitters Loop, - which is a store in Philadelphia. - What is this? - I know that that is affiliate Knitting Group, - and then City of Mitt. - Early love. - So these are all the groups that I found in Philadelphia, - and then I posted like, - Hey, - does anybody want to your mom? - Um, - I actually usually work by myself because I'm really impulsive, - and I do projects really quickly. - And so a lot of times, - like, - I would be finished, - and other people have other things to do with their lives. - And this was more of like a side gig. - And, - um, - I would end up, - you know, - like not we wouldn't end up being finished at the same time, - So I actually mostly work on my own. - But if you want to do a large project and you need some missions and or you just feel more - comfortable working with other people than I highly recommend finding a group of knitters - in your area and rivalries one of the best ways because on by saying knitters, - but knitters and crow shares yarn artists, - whatever you want to b i mostly working knitting. - So I guess That's why that's my go to term. - Um, - but really you can utilize rivalry because it is really a well supported and well used - website and community for fibre artists. - So let's see if there's anything else also just real quick if you want. - Teoh Streets Department has been a really great friend to me. - We connected really early on in both of our careers, - and basically we This is something that you might want to try and find is the street art - Blawg Oh, - are a photographer in your city or your town that will help you. - This is like free marketing, - So basically it's like you can email them a lot of times they're on Twitter or Facebook - that you can tweet to them or send them a Facebook message. - Or if they have their email there, - you can send them your photos. - Um and here it is, - you know, - like this is Philadelphia's, - and so Conrad will go around and take pictures of any work. - But you can also email him like say, - Hey, - you know, - I'm gonna go your mom and filled all feel like here is where I'm going. - Do you want to meet me? - and get some installation photos or process photos, - and he'll meet you a lot of people because he needs me as much as I need him. - Um, - that's kind of like the basis of the relationship. - Ah, - that can work to your benefit. - So I would do some research, - find out what kind of bloggers there are, - because blacks were such a big thing. - Now, - um, - and they're pretty much everywhere. - So there's bound to be somebody in your area that you both can create a working - relationship with, - Um so this is the Philadelphia one. - And then I contacted Street are sf when I moved to Oakland. - Um, - so these I, - you know, - like, - contacted them and set up, - um, - a project for us to work together on. - And so those are just like some resource is I would You don't have to do a street are pla. - You could be a knitting block in your area. - It could just be like a photographer in your area, - just something that you think is gonna benefit you and showing your work off on. - But also just, - um, - just make sure that you you feel comfortable doing that to, - you know, - That's only if you just want your mom for yourself and you want to be anonymous. - You know, - you're gonna have to create your own separate email, - anonymous email address or you're gonna have to create your own separate Facebook. - These are things that you know you have to consider if you don't want anybody to know who - you are, - Another If you are looking for people to work, - rest just going back to Facebook real quick. - You're gonna want to create a group. - So here's a group called Yarn Bombing Los Angeles And here people, - conjoined and whatever. - And so basically, - everybody can say like, - Hey, - I have this project going on in Los Angeles who wants to help out, - and you can do this too, - and try and invite people that you know where knitting you can advertise it. - On Twitter, - you can advertise it on revelry and say, - Hey, - I'm looking for people that want to help me. - Um, - do some er Mommy. - So those are just some resource is to help you market your work and also help you find - people to work with, - if that's what you want. - Todo Okay, - If you have any questions, - just let me know 9. Using Instagram: - So today we're talking about how to market your work once you've completed the peace. - So just a few things that I want to show you. - If you guys have a smartphone, - some great base Teoh, - really connect yourself with the yard, - Mom and community. - Also street art community ways to kind of get your work out there. - I know how difficult it can be, - especially maybe if you don't live in a very populated area. - Eso It makes it even more important to market your work online so that people everywhere - will be able to see it. - So just quickly I'm gonna show you one program one at That's really great if you have a - smartphone, - which is Instagram, - and if you have her on Instagram, - it's basically a photo sharing social media app. - Take pictures, - put filters on them, - and I'm sure you work with the world basically, - and you can follow anybody. - They don't necessarily have to follow you back, - and you don't have to know each other. - It's pretty great, - so kind of, - you know, - be a fan and it's not know, - weird or uneasy or anything like that. - So let's see. - There's just like one thing that's important, - and I'll talk about this with Twitter as well as hash tagging. - Instagram is really great for hash tagging because it's kind of like if you've ever heard a - tumbler. - Tumblr is very image face, - and so it's Instagram. - Instagram is only images and video, - so it's a great resource is just like quickly scroll through. - People use it all the time I get. - It's my favorite social media sites or or ab. - I mean, - there is a website, - but you can't do much on it. - So I'm going. - Teoh, - quickly. - Look on my phone. - Quick phone out. - Um, - see so hash tag. - I'm sure you all know by this point it just kind of like that number, - the pound sign. - And it's really important. - Hash tag. - You work if you want other yarn bombers to see your work or people that are checking out - your mom saying we're checking out knitting yarn members generally hashtag just young mom, - they can hashtagged yarn bombing. - It's not his comment on that's how so thing to kind of do you research when you want a - market work is like see which ones have the most pictures on them knitting Crow Shea, - Those air good hashtags. - I actually love to scroll through the knitting hash tag, - but it can be like, - really, - you can kind of get lost in it if you're trying to push your own work because there's so - many knitting hashtags that about time that post your photo and you hash tag it. - There's already, - like 150 other pictures that are being posted with the hashtag of knitting. - So if you're trying to get seen, - it's like trying to figure out which hashtags you know, - are used. - Even if they're used most commonly, - that can't mean that more people are looking at it. - I personally scroll through knitting for our the knitting hashtag for hours, - and I just love seeing on people's different projects. - Um, - the yarn bombing one or young mom is definitely really important. - If you're going to do if you're gonna make a bomb. - Absolutely. - Because, - like John Bombers are going to see it. - She artist people that are you know, - someone posted a picture of your mom ing and they didn't know what it waas. - They're gonna come check out our mom, - so take a look at it on. - It's like a link that you can go Teoh basically and put it correctly. - So right now, - let's see if we can get a little clearer. - Um, - this is the yardarm. - Hashtag, - and basically it's all different projects that people have done, - which was a little clear. - Sorry, - it's not, - um so these are all It's kind of like a community, - and you can click on them and you can like them. - You know, - if you join up, - it's important. - It's really important because you're making visual art. - And this is the visual artist dream of a nap. - Because really, - it is You're just like taking pictures, - um, - of your work and sharing it. - No, - I mean just like their sound. - You know, - maybe a writer really loves Twitter something, - you know, - like we instagram's really important for us. - So some hash tags you might want to write these down that really good street art is a great - hashtag because you're not just trying to appeal. - Teoh on your mama is you want to make your audiences largest you possibly can. - So it is a form street arts You could do street. - Our public are I usually do city that the pieces in. - So I'll do like, - for example, - I live in Oakland now. - Just one way starts here. - I will dio Oakland Street are you know, - five back Phileo Philly Street Art to C Street are wherever I am making work or do the - opposite I mean, - it's more hash, - I better better Chances are you're gonna get your work out there so I could do Oakland - Street are And I can do street art Oakland and I can do yard art. - Uh, - if I do, - I don't hashtag rochet if there's not any project in there, - because I know how particular as five artists are about such details. - So I will dio either knitting or car shade, - depending on which is it's both. - I'll hook it up. - Um, - other one nit are, - you know, - just visual art are your city are so or your town, - you know, - it's a Columbus, - Ohio, - Columbus artery. - Are Columbus Columbus artists. - I mean, - thing to do is do the research in your area what is the most use and utilize hashtags. - So that's gonna require a little bit of work on your end on the same thing. - Kind of goes for Twitter and Aiken all kind of flip the camera around and we'll work on the -
