Welcome to the course where I show you how to write an in-depth, enjoyable fantasy novel that will keep your readers interested. Don't make the same mistakes that so many novice authors make and create a fantasy novel that can challenge those of successful authors!

My name is Matthew Dewey and I am a writer. It is hard to say when my passion for writing began, but if I can recall it all started back in primary school. A small, pale child with not much to say, but plenty to write, or in most cases scribble, across a page. From there writing became a hobby, moving on to become a part-time job writing articles on various subjects from technology to programming. Suddenly, the spark was ignited and I wrote my first novel. From there I was hooked onto something that was akin to a calling.

Enough monologue, it is time to tell you what this course is worth to you. First, That being said, this course was created with the express intention to teach the fundamentals of writing a fantasy novel. In my rising through the writing world I found that information was handed freely, but not with enough dedication and forethought. The advice lacking and the examples poor. I decided to push through and after several years developed my own toolkit that is simple and multipurpose. The first and most important lesson I learned was how not to write a fantasy novel. From there I experimented and found the positives.

In addition to the research, I also write from experience, having written several fantasy novels and articles on the subject as well.

1. Introduction | Writing Fantasy for Beginners: Hello writers and welcome to the course before we begin, allow me to introduce and explain my experience as a rata, as it will give you a better dear where my knowledge and lessons come from. My name is Matthew Dewey and I have been writing most of my life, having had a clear interest in it in my having had a clear interest in it, even in my education. Before my final year of school came to an end, I wrote my first book and published as well. After my first publication, I was hooked on the idea of becoming Arata, and all it took was patience and dedication to finally turn it into a Korea I could live on . To this day, I have published several novels to have plans for new ones as well. In the way nearing the end of 2018 I realized I needed to make writing a more prevalent habit in my career and remove those long breaks in between writing. So I challenged myself. My challenge was to write a short story every day at 1000 words minimum. If, for whatever reason that I missed the day I would make up for the next day, writing two stories and recording this now to start of May and have written close to 210 stories. The challenge is still going now with that brought, inhabit instilled in my community, off followers Grain. I have received questions and problems from other writers who are struggling to start the rotting. Now rotting Hispano means an easy career, as it requires a lot of time and effort to create a finished product so I can understand the trouble beginners are having. That brings me to this course writing a fantasy novel for beginnings. I've been releasing courses such as this one regularly answering the questions and tackling the problems that right his face. And now I'll be addressing the broad topic of writing a fantasy novel when it comes to writing a fantasy novel. There are so many aspects which depend on the writer's imagination and writing style, which I cannot influence in any way. However, there are still many problems that all writers face of the genre that I can help with. In this course. I'll be discussing what I learned in order to write a fantasy novel beginning to end and be proud of what you put on paper. My hope is that by the end of this course, you will have my advice and knowledge do the same. Feeling the same sense of pride and accomplishment, I will be discussing the structure of a fantasy novel and how part is commonly paste. How to build the world developed interesting fantasy characters. While law is so important and how to develop the story. With that said, I believe it is time to end this lengthy introduction and begin. Shall we? I'll see you in the first lecture now for now. 2. Fantasy Structure | Writing Fantasy for Beginners: Hello, writers, and welcome to the first listen off the course. This listen is a special on, as will be tackling the common structures that dominate the fantasy literature world. Now, as they begin Arata, I'm sure you have read a fair amount of books off the fantasy genre. In which case I'm sure you notice a lot of the books seem to follow a similar problem. It's all the names and appearances will change. I'll be discussing the four most popular structures for fantasy novel, starting with the most use structure. The first structure are all begin with is called the generic or milieu structure, as it is often the most successful and, in fact, simple structure to use generic structure is where the plot is centered around the main character who was thrown into the world. Much like you, the reader. The main character simply learns how the world works, discovery new things along the way. In this way, the main character is the reader being shown what the Boulders lack. And since the novel was centered around the main character, it is often written from the main character's perspective. Although it is often written from the first person. Third person is Justus Common. Great examples of generic fantasy plots that did well are Harry Potter and Narnia. Although non your followed several main characters, the effect was much the same. Generic parts are successful as most fantasy novels incorporate a sense of wonder, giving the reader the curiosity to learn more about the world and having the main character react the same way as the reader. This reinforces the wonder that the world provides the next structure for fantasy novel is similar to generic structure, so I gave it the name semi generic. The main difference between generic and semi generic is that Simi generic main characters grew up in the world instead of being thrown into them. And as such, it often leaves the reader behind to piece together how the world works. Now. This still means that the main characters will be surprised and scared, but they are fully away off the existence off this fantasy world. Examples for the structure being the spook, Siri's and the most popular example. This top of fantasy novel is Game of Thrones. George R. R. Martin was able to incorporate many characters and subplots, but overall, everyone in a Siri's knows the world they live in, despite there being fantastic beasts and monsters, every character has in fact heard of them as game of Thrones proved. This type of structure is still popular and does rather well. While the righty may not be a biggest flash than generic structures, this certainly our more memorable. These novels are usually part of a largest Siri's, as the interest in the generic structure normally runs out after 5 to 6 books at the Max, whereas thes structures are famously written to be much larger. The third structure is the fable structure. A structure of these novels is centered around a moral listen. This name is inspired by. He stops fables as there's always a moral to the story. In these novels, the character could have being thrown into the world or born into it. But the plot and structure are centered on the main character coming to grips with an important moral lesson. I'm sure we can all recall the fables we read in school or heard of from our parents that made us brush our teeth more regularly or not lie about who really ate the last chocolate chip cookie well. These structures are usually deeper than ensuring basic Mannone's. The main character in these structures are truly rotten people thoroughly misguided or simply just rude. Suddenly they'll thrown into or convinced to go on an adventure and change who they are. Most of the story will be following them from point A to point B and watching as they learn lessons from the events along the way. While many different Siri's seem to incorporate us of the main characters, these stories often only have one more listen that stands out above the rest. While the most common fantasy novels appeared to have just several listens that developed the character as a whole, once the character goes home or reaches the end of the journey, depending on where you want to in the novel, they have changed for the better, other becoming a good person or a least a better one, no matter what. The change to this character is clear, and they are better off. A popular example of the structure is The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. The novel was centered around Bilbo Baggins, the character the title references and follows. He's adventure there and back again to be left with memories, listens and a different self. But The Oval is to be more accepting of the war that is around him and less cautious about going someplace that is foreign to him. In short, to spend less time in his home of the Shire and to explore the world that has been set out to him. One small. Finally, there is the three act structure. The three act structure applies to. Some examples are mentioned earlier. It is a structure that follows in three steps. First, the introduction to the world. In this third of the novel, the skeleton of the plot is established for the readers, along with some fundamental aspect of the world and how it works and who the characters are From. There comes the second act, in which the plot becomes more prevalent and serious events transpire. Main characters are pushed, and by the end of this act, they already for climatic ending with the antagonist. Now the third act is used to build suspense show power in both protagonist and antagonist, Good overcomes evil in the last chapter or two are left to towel off loose ends. These three acts can transpire in a single novel or be split over several books. Much like the Harry Potter series, the three act structure is dreadfully broad, and that's it can apply to many novels who were fundamentally different structures personally from these three structures, I would recommend the generic structure to start with. The structure is a great way for writer to tell their story to the reader. Often, fantasy writers have such a large and amazing world in the head, but they need to reveal it professionally and clearly for the reader to funner by telling this story to the main character, they are telling it to the reader. Personally, I'm a fan of both generic and semi generic as it shows in my rotting. However, when I feel I wish to be more focused on the main character, I'll lean towards fable structure I found. This gives me ample opportunity to change and develop a single character, and it really pays to pay so much focus towards a single character, as it's not only a great practice for character to development, but it can often make a more powerful story. I'll see you in the next video baffle now. 3. World Building | Writing Fantasy for Beginners: Hello, writers and welcome to the fantasy world building. Listen, in this video we'll be going through the many questions you should ask when building your fantasy world before we begin. I must stress that they are to truly fantasy worlds. You can base your fantasy novel on the rial world, in which case you will billy need and be so index. But the true fantasy world tops our imaginary balls and alternative realities Imaginary worlds as the name of plus our worlds that have been built from the ground up. Ballarat is imagination. The locations, the people, the history of the creatures are all made up. That's this world can have anything that the rides, her desires, incredible technology or magical spells are examples of this. The second top off imaginary world is alternative reality. Alternative realities are realities based on our world. But there are some clear and sometimes fantastic differences. These worlds don't need as much building as imaginary worlds as a majority of the world actually exists. Now let us discuss how do you build an imaginary world? First, I would like to say on a personal note that this is my favorite part about writing a fantasy novel based on a fiction world. There are more questions you can decide upon when creating an imaginary world such as politics, location, names and the people that creatures, the buildings, the technology and such. The first question, I often ask myself is, Will you be building a fantasy world? Sit in the Dark ages on a modern, almost futuristic world. Sometimes my decided will doesn't fall exactly into one of these two categories, but it helps when choosing which way to lean towards more cars or horses, swords or guns. These questions are quickly answered by sitting an error. The next question is just as important as it can affect the entire world. Magical, no magic. In an imaginary world with no magic, things become more gritty and relatable. There is less wonder in a world without magic, but that also makes the building of the world a lot easier at the same time. Finally, if you said there will be magic, explained the limits to it, you cannot simply say, cause magic throughout your level. There has to be limits or isn't fun and interesting. Magic should not be a crutch to your writing, so ensure that it is limited. If you choose to add it now, let us address some choice questions for the alternative reality. The first question you must decide when working with alternative reality is where the deviation from history began. Alternative reality needs an alternative history, so you need to decide where the real world ended and why. For some, this is easy. You decide who lives or who dies in the past, who won, who lost and so on. Something money mental helps to shape the world as well. From the the reader can guess where some changes may come from. Of course, this only changes a few aspects of the world. Noticeable or not, you need them to decide. How far are you willing to take it? Perhaps you create a scientist who throws the world into some sort of dystopia or perhaps throws it into a utopia. Perhaps there is a cataclysmic event on the world is going through another ass age or some form of apocalypse. Remnants of history can always be found in alternative realities, so choosing how far back the change will help with us. However, let us tackles some substantial differences about opportunity of reality and why it is always different in some way. From there, it comes down to what if questions. You have chosen this world top four reason you wish to to have the same places, all the same cultures, same people, even, perhaps all of the above. However, something needs to happen for to look the way you see it. What if Australia held all the power in the world? How would that affect the other nations? What if there was magic in the world? In which case, how is it governed in society? Or what if humans evolved to have the abilities off certain animals? So many questions that I cannot pose all in one video. But I think you get the idea. The changes that you make have to have reasons behind them. So when you think of these reasons, you are, in fact will building. Answering these questions are answering the questions that are inside the readers head. Finally, I'm gonna be talking about how you can build the world in your writing. Your writing style is your own, so you decide where the details are revealed. But I can give you some strong pointers if your world isn't coming through as strong. First, you cannot simply describe your world with looks. It is a common mistakes beginners make in building their world. Deciding how place or person looks doesn't properly set the scene. What does set the scene is the way the characters speak, what damage is done to them, what actions they take in their daily loves. What societal terms fill this world. For example, let us suppose you decide to create an imaginary world. Sit in the Dark Ages. You're not going to properly give the world justice if you don't incorporate the right terms, our characters tending to horses, sharpening swords, drinking in a tavern, are they nuts? And archers, wizards and witches, monsters and fairies. All these are terms you want to use in your novel as soon as possible to build the world horses instead of cars, swords instead of guns, taverns instead of pumps. Although I'm sure there are plenty of society's historical, their pubs happens. King or president, what is the ruling system over your society and finally language? The way the characters speak is what really shows the time that they live in language that is more formal is usually used in all the history, so avoid linger that is modern, and you can build a better medieval world. If that is what you wish. Language are found is the most difficult detail to master. But by simply picturing the world and the character saying the sentence, you can decide if it sounds right or not, and there you have it personally. I like to sit down and create such details and background facts before getting into the novel itself. It helps fill in. Some will building questions later on. So before you dive into your characters and main plot, look at your world in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps most information you create won't be used in your novel, but it will help build it for your characters and readers that concludes this. Fantasy Protagonists | Writing Fantasy for Beginners: Hello, writers and welcome to another lesson in writing a fantasy novel. In this lecture, I'll be going through the fundamentals of writing a fantasy protagonist, main character or side character. Was that being said, I won't go in depth into each purpose behind these characters, as the main character and side character have largely different roles when it comes to the plot of a fantasy novel. First thing to make a note off when creating a character in any genre is that the personality is going to be unique. Personality is often an influence on the plot or subplot depend on the role of the character, as in the level Jupiter decided personality for your character, you must decide upon one governing trait. This trade. Toby. What effects most of the characters decisions. This governing trait will affect the plot in a large way, so that is why you need to be considerate, went deciding on the street. If you want a character to pull through in tough times, you'll need to give them courage. If the going is getting tough, you want the tough to run fully loves, make the governing trait cowardice. Once you've decided on their plot developing trait, you decide their face value, trait and bad trait. The face value trade is what governs how they talk and act on a day to day basis. The bad trait is their Achilles heel, which in the end is what makes them human. For example, suppose we have a character who's bad trait is cowardice. Cowardice is their true problem and laugh, and their fear is clear. In a month, however, they face value. Trait is bravery. The character pretends to be strong and unfailing, but in reality it is just a facade to protect their Achilles heel. Let's make this character of more interesting by deciding upon their governing trait, a trait which comes first over both face value and bad trait. Let us make this character straight protective off their family. So this unlikable character who isn't willing to put themselves in harm's way for other characters the spot saying that they will will fight to the last breath for their family. With these traits, you can easily decide upon how the character acts and speaks from the can add anything else that you find necessary. Appearance is something I personally don't take too much time seriously rotting. The way a character talks and acts is what really gets the interest off the reader. However, appearance is still important in its own way. Working with appearances can decide how this person lives, how they take care of themselves and so on. If you describe a meek looking character, you cannot expect your reader to believe they are strong, fatter. I've read many fantastic descriptions of characters, but in the book itself, there always fall flat off the description. Keeping the description openly vague gives you more room to work with, and it gives the reader opportunity to picture the character in their own way, which is in fact, what they will be doing from the start of the novel. So filling of that picture over time throughout the novel can affect the attachment between that character and the reader. Next, the protagonists has a moral compass. When creating a protagonist, you must aside to what limits they are bad before you make them so. So if you push a character far in the characters more and antagonised than a protagonist, there has to be something about the protagonist that makes them good. They're never truly any neutral characters in books. So keep that advance in Mont when writing a character. Finally, it comes down to the purpose off the side protagonists. Will they help? The main character or characters on their journey will be you simply as a tool for world building or character development. Less Assad characters need not have such depth, but every interaction in a novel is a golden opportunity to shine the precious drool that is your novel. The protagonist interactions with other characters needs to help the reader understand who they are, so let each one be an opportunity to build them. I find that conflict is the best way to develop any character. Arguments are when emotions are the most clear and truth is often involuntarily revealed, allowing you to be quite straightforward with your reader and also give solid reason to while the character is changing the way that they are. Yes, even protagonists have arguments, and setting these relationships will further cement who they are in the reader's ours. With that, this listen comes training. In the next video, we'll be looking at the antagonists and how they fit in the overall arc of your fantasy novel. I'll see you then 5. Fantasy Antagonists | Writing Fantasy for Beginners: Hello, writers, and welcome back to the fantasy course in this. Listen, we're going to be taking a look at the antagonists in a fantasy novel. The antagonist is a necessity in any fantasy novel, especially if you're writing for young adults. Like the majority off fantasy novelists, the antagonised gives purpose to the main character in a sense that they have a role to play in the plot, at least if they are not the end goal. If you were to look at any popular fantasy novel, there's almost always an antagonist who is pure evil, a person, creature or otherworldly force with dark intent. And it is up to the main protagonists to put a stop to it. The antagonists, such a sour on Voldemort or any Dark Lord, always make for amazing antagonists. But you need it goes fires to create a villain who is super powerful. Many fantasy novels written today approach the world a lot more realistically, and as such, the villain can simply be another person. Since these villains are more human, it gives the right to space to give them human aspect and evoke empathy and the protagonists, if not mercy, the same would therefore plan to the reader. Personally, I found the most easy antagonist to rot. Is that off the all powerful dark Lord Trump, such as Ceron and Voldemort? As you needn't worry too much about the human aspects. These characters are simply two dimensional targets for the protagonist, which isn't a bad thing. It is still a purpose for the protagonist. After all, antagonists and a fantasy novel with more depth and human aspects are not more difficult to write is there has to be clear emotional or psychological trauma to cause them to act the way they do. Writing a villain like that is far more difficult than writing a protagonist, which is why it is common for writer too early work on it last minute an n f. It to make the villains more realistic. The best way to create a more realistic human antagonist is to have the reader lack thumb. Before they found out that the character they're reading is the antagonist. Introduce them with a likable qualities as a human and then pull the rug out from beneath the reader. It makes it difficult for the reader to watch as the character they enjoyed reading to not to be, ah, horrible person, a true villain. In these cases, the reader won't root against the protagonist but generally feel empathy for the villain once they are overcome by the protagonist. This is the tactic in rotting an antagonist that are truly enjoyed. It adds dips to the novel and makes the villain more interesting. Nothing makes an ending more generic than a villain that you barely know being defeated by the protagonist in the end, great. Some conflict between the reader and villain, not just a hero and the villain. That being said for the beginning authors I do recommend right in your first novel with a common villain lock. The examples are mentioned. These villains are easier to write, and you can still easily make for enjoyable read by using them. If you plan on only ever writing one fantasy novel or are more experienced in the genre than I would recommend creating an antagonist that the reader empathizes with a lot more, it is far more powerful reading in any genre, not just fantasy. With that, this lesson comes to an end, and I hope you enjoyed in the next Listen, I'll be talking about more ways you can evoke emotions in a fantasy novel about for now, 6. Emotion In Fantasy | Writing Fantasy for Beginners: Hello, writers, and welcome back to another lecture on writing a fantasy novel. This lecture is going to be centered around writing emotion into your novel in order to get the reader more interested in characters and events. Writing immersion into any novel requires vast amounts of practice. If you wish to write a scene off or interaction off the cup and my experience, one or two novels worth off emulating emotions in rotting should help me sit a general idea of how to convey emotion effectively. First thing you must be in mind when writing emotions is that there is no rushing. Emotions require patients in order to reach the full effect. If you're writing ahora, you need to lead up to the scare. With proper suspense or shock, you need to lower your reader into a false sense of security and have them on the edge off their seat. Of course, the big question is, how do you write that into a fantasy novel? I'm sure you heard of saying that the best way to write any emotion is from your perspective. Place yourself in front of a therapist and open your heart with emotion. You're not just the words you speak are going to be drawn out as you find the right words to convey your emotions properly. In that way, a patient explains how they are feeling to a doctor. You need to have the character convey or narrate and emotion, as if you were explaining it in the same way. The reader wants to feel those emotions when you reach a certain scene in your novel. So take a moment to write a paragraph or two or even three to properly convey what sensations are consuming your characters. Another way to emphasize the impact of these paragraphs is not to have them as often throughout your novel. Generally, the best way I find for writing any emotion is to have a distinct calm trust and what is happening before. If you want positive SATs and smells to have more of an impact on the character and reader , you need to hammer it home by having a dark seen before it, and only to explain this great example of contrast by referring to Lord of the Rings. For those unfamiliar, our try describe it as best I can in a particular sequence. In the first book, the main character named Photo is injured, pierced with the sword of an evil entity. The longer the wound is untreated, the more he slips into death and darkness to become like the evil entity that stabbed him. The next pages are intense agony and suspense. As the allies of fraud, a rushed him to Riverdale in a place where you could be treated. The sequence is suspenseful and painful to lead as photos suffers, constantly pursued by more antagonists as well. Luckily, photo does reach Rivendell, but with the help of his allies, when all seems lost from there, the book describes Rivendell for its beauty, the sights, the sounds, the smells, the tastes of the food that he is given. There is an overwhelming sense off calm that washes over the reader, and they revel in the break from such dark moments. This powerful lead up to such a simple and calm, happy scene is what made the scene so memorable for others. If this scene was just following another, it wouldn't seem as amazing. It would seem quite normal compared to what has been happening in novel, however, bar spacing out these happy scenes with darker scenes as much as you space out dark scenes of happy things, you're maintaining interest within the characters. You're not throwing them into the same happy, seen all the same dark scene over and over again. This variety is what will keep the reader reading. When you're crafting such emotional scenes in your novel, you need to understand that you can't drop emotions out of no way, and you can't drop them constantly. Pace your motion in your novel and try to describe emotions how you would describe it to a therapist. Slow and easy Finding the right words. Many chapters can be written with ease and speed without taking anything from the novel, but any emotion, negative or positive needs some build up to have the best effect before I conclude this. Listen, I want to provide you with a challenge. You're to rot to all three paragraphs describing a forest and how it effects a character on of your own positively, then rocked two or three paragraphs about the same scene, but how it effects your character negatively. Take your Tom and you're sure to be surprised by what emotional descriptions you're out with your creative manned. You can either be changing the forest to create negative or positive effects. Or you can change the character the way that they are or they passed, which is why they have those emotions in the forest. With that, this lesson comes to an end. Lore | Writing Fantasy for Beginners: Hello, writers and welcome back to the course on writing a fantasy novel. In this listen, we'll be discussing lower in a previous listen we discussed world building and how he contracted throughout the book. This lecture is going to be centered around law, which is related to world building and the same set of applause more to an imaginary or alternative reality worlds. These worlds requires some set law behind the universe, and Howard works now. When I say law, I'm referring to the traditions, beliefs in history, behind the world, the rules that govern the world and how it works. Of course, this listen will only apply to those writers. We were going to be creating a fantasy novel set in an imaginary world or in alternative reality or even a hidden society. If you wish to create history and in depth rules of up settings in your book, stick around. But if your fantasy book isn't going to be really dependent on it or it won't be needed, feel free to skip over to the next lesson. We will be discussing subplots and story development now, as I stated in my World Building lecture on a personal note. I prefer to take a day or two to create an in depth law behind my world before I even start writing the actual book. Doing So allows me to have characters reference past events or follow certain rules I have set for my imaginary universe. Of course, they have bean many limitations or rules that the story needs to funner. The world needs to be wondrous but not so unbelievable that it reads as a child's dream. June every fantasy will today has rules and history that it refers to Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Mortal instruments, his dark materials, 90 in game of Thrones and so on have their limits, and they have their histories. If you want to create such a vibrant bull that always has more behind it or you need to do is bake reference to these rules and histories throughout the novel Siri's. In doing so, you can build a bigger picture for the reader to view as well as give them hints at possible past events. Was that ever giving them the full story because it might not actually be necessary, however, and doing so, you create a more vibrant and interesting world for your reader creatures. Wars, past interactions, politics and societal traditions are all examples of this. Now, if you plan on writing a series that will be filled with such oddities in the world that make it so different from reality, it is impossible for you to create a universe in one or two days before you start writing. However, having vague ideas to refer to in your novel is enough to start developing your law as you write your Siris of novels, so you need not be so worried. What is more important is that you remain consistent with what you're writing. Keeping track of such law is important. Otherwise, you're gonna contradict yourself later in the book if you make mention of an event. But change is certain detail. Listen, I'll be discussing subplots and story development since I'll be tackling two topics in this list, and I'll start by discussing them separately and then finishing on holly work with each other to begin. Subplots are, in essence, small stories told in the background of the main story. Thes subplots are usually related to other characters, or every character for a novel doesn't have a specific main character. These stories are used to give the reader and in depth look at the side characters, relating their personality and actions to the reader Through their own smaller story, Subplots can range in size, depending on how important the main plot is. Often in most fantasy novels, there is little to no subplots. Instead, following the main character and their oval blood, the sad characters, like the reader are left to follow along and watch. As the encounters are overcome, true side characters can of ambitions or will to achieve their own desires, but really does a right to create a subplot following that character, at least not until it directly effects the main story. Story development is much like character development. With character development. We create interactions and events that grow character, change them to found them. Are you willing to taste the dedication to the world and create a series of lengthy novels . The next thing you need to consider is what kind of right to you want to be.
