1. Introduction: Hi, I'm Jonathan Robinson. Welcome to this fun and informative class on how to write a best selling book in your spare time. Writing a bestselling book may sound like a big goal. Of the 15 books I've written while employed another work, three of those books have become New York Times best sellers, so I know how to make this happen. The method you'll learn in this class will work for you. Whether you want to write a work of fiction or nonfiction book. We'll be covering a lot of topics in this course, including how to overcome writer's block, figuring out what you want to write about, how to outline a book and make it entertaining, how to edit a book, how to find a publisher or self publish and even a bit about marketing. Now one of the keys to writing a book is to break it down into easily doable steps. If you do that, writing a book can be a lot of fun, and it can also be profitable if you know how to market it properly. Now most people don't make along money from selling their actual book, but book gives you a lot of credibility and can lead to paid speaking, gigs and other opportunities after appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show on several occasions , I not only sold a lot of books, but I was also able to make money, giving speeches and consulting with companies. Having a book out can open up a lot of doors and writing. It could be a truly creative endeavor that enriches your life. Now, besides giving you information, you'll need to complete your book. Along with this course, I've created a Facebook group called Skill Share Bestseller so that you, me and fellow classmates can post up and get feedback on or writing by helping each other. In this way, we can all become better writers and put out even better books. Thank you for listening and please review the course when it's done and let fellow aspiring writers know about it as well. Now proceed to the next section, where we can discuss getting clear on exactly what your best seller will be about 2. Brainstorming Your Book: Hi again. The first thing to think about when writing a book is What do you want to write about? Books fall into two broad categories. Ones that are made up stories, which are called works of fiction and books. They're based on information and fax called nonfiction. We'll talk about nonfiction books first, but then a bit about writing fiction. So if you're trying to write a nonfiction book, you first have to ask yourself, What do I know a lot about, or what am I passionate to research? I've noticed that some people don't realize that they're really an expert in certain subjects. For example, when I asked a couple of my friends, what do you consider me? An expert in one of them said, writing books until he said that I hadn't ever thought about doing a course in writing books, even though I've written 15 of them. So you may consider asking your friends and family what they think you're knowledgeable about. For some of the books I've written, I start out not knowing much about the subject, but I was intensely interested in learning more, so I read other people's books on the subject and did some research. After doing that, it often became apparent to me that something with missing and other people's books. That's when I knew I had to write my own book on this subject. Now, when I've written non fiction books, I often begin just by brainstorming everything that comes to mind about the subject at hand . For example, if the subject were politics, my brainstorm list might look something like this one. The time I met Donald Trump and what I learned from that to the time I met Bill Clinton and how that impacted me. Three. The Polarisation of Politics four. The Important Support Train Your Competition negatively. Five. Money in Politics. Six. Why People Go Into Politics. Seven. How Laws Are Made. Eight. How Lobbying Effects What Becomes Law. Notice that amongst the different topics I came up with, I also includes some personal anecdotes that would be informative and entertaining. So the time I met Donald Trump and Bill Clinton would be useful stories to include in a book about politics. It's important to include any entertaining anecdotes you can think of in a work of non fiction. After all, most people want to be entertained while they read, Even if the book is about useful information when making a brainstorm list like this, let your imagination run wild. You're not trying to come up with just good ideas. You're trying to come up with a lot of ideas, many topics and lots of stories. You can edit this down later, but for now, just get as many ideas as possible down on paper or in your computer. Later, I'll talk about how to turn this large brainstorm list into a list of chapters. But for now, don't edit yourself. Keep brainstorming until you can't think of another thing to write down. Now, when writing a work of fiction, the process of writing of brain strong list can look a bit different. But it's also very useful. Instead of a list of topics, you might write a list of ideas you want to convey or character traits of your main characters. You might include phrases that include major plot points as well. Here's a brainstorm list for my fiction book. Conversations of Dog Adventures of a Foreleg, a guru one Owners very depressed, too. He finds a dog who's very happy. Three. The scene of the dog and owner, sharing love at first sight for he praised to be as happy as his dog. Five. He starts to hear his dogs thoughts in his head. Six. The dog teaches them how to love and play again. Seven owners, ex wife and him get back together. Ate dog is funny wise ing fronted. Nine. Dog has serious health challenge but recovers 10. Include funny pictures of dogs with two captains in the book. Now note that my list consists of plot points, character traits of the main characters and even ideas to make the book more entertaining by including cute pictures of dogs. Once you've written down every idea, you can think of your ready to go on to the next section. Writing a best seller consists of taking many steps yet by doing one small step at a time. You make continuous progress and you avoid overwhelm. I encourage you to take the time now before you watch the next section to create a brainstorm list for your book idea. It doesn't need to be very specific or perfect yet by putting a lot of ideas down on paper or in your computer, it will help you move forward on your path to a best selling book 3. The Four Types of Writing: Welcome back before getting into outlining your book and other steps in the writing process , I want to give you a distinction that I think will be very helpful to you. I call this distinction the four modes of writing. I call these four modes writing the following one force writing to editor writing three sloppy writing and four flow writing. I understand how to use each of these categories of writing at the right time a book can easily pop out into during your spare time. First, let me explain what forced writing is and how to make the best use of it. Many writers force themselves to write, but find that it often leads to them feel like they're hitting their head against a wall. If you're going to force yourself to write or hit your head against a wall, it's important you do it as little as possible. Writer's block is really remedied by prolonged, painful writing sessions. On the other hand, if you don't occasionally force yourself to sit down and write, you may never write anything. So what can you dio? Well, I finally realized that getting myself to sit down regularly to write it was a good thing, but staring at a blank computer screen ad nauseum was not. So I made an agreement with myself. I decided to force myself to sit down and write five times a week for a minimum of five minutes. If I couldn't come up with anything during those five minutes, or if what I wrote felt to me like garbage, I'd get up and do something else. I'd be done for the day, and I could feel satisfied that I kept my commitment. Then the next day, I'd try again by doing this. I soon learned that if you commit to sitting down regularly, sometimes amuse will reward you when, during your five minutes of writing you find yourself writing in the flow are in the zone, keep writing. Writing in the flow is easy, fast and fun. But if you don't give yourself enough time toe, find that flow. You'll miss out. But having a lot of at bats at writing, you'll find you can occasionally hit it out of the park. Now the second type of writing, Modi called edited writing editor writing, is when you try to write and edit your work at the same time, many writers do this, and for most folks that it's a very bad idea. Trying to make sentences grammatically perfect or get your wording just right often interferes with the flow and energy of good writing. Therefore, I suggest you compartmentalize your editing toe after you've written a piece when you're right, right then, once you're done writing, that's the time for editing. If possible, don't try to edit and right at the same time. Now the third motive writing I call sloppy writing sloppy writing is great for getting your creative juices flowing. Often I start off my five minute writing sessions with sloppy writing. I deliberately avoid trying to make my writing makes sense or sound good. Instead, just get my stream of consciousness thoughts out on paper or in the computer. Now it's fun to do sloppy writing because you're not even trying to make sense of or sound good. Often in the middle of sloppy writing, great ideas and eloquent sentences emerged that you can use in your book later, when you're piecing all those things together as free. Once I've done some sloppy writing, I may go into a more ordinary writing mode or even edited mode. However, when a sloppy writing mode you do not want to be deciding what's worth pursuing or how to organize it, you just right later you could go through what you wrote and see if there are any hidden gems in what you wrote. That's what edited writing mode is about. Finally, there's what I call flow writing. Ah, flow writing. That's when you're writing something, and everything just seems to click your words stream out of you like poetry. And the only problem is trying to try pus fast as the ideas flow out of you. The key to writing a book quickly is to get in the zone as often as possible. Yet this magical state is not something you can directly dive into. It needs to be coerced and cultivated by allowing some sloppy writing and avoiding ending as you right and committing to writing most days for at least five minutes, Flow writing woke her more more frequently. Once you're good at finding your flow, writing Brian a book is rather easy Now. I've had writers think my ideas can't possibly work for them. It doesn't matter if you write for a minimum of five minutes a day, five times a week. Magic seems to result. You may find in the beginning you missed the flow most of the time during your five minute sessions, however, soon the muse will find you. The force will be with you when you consistently right in the flow. It's both addictive and very productive. You'll find yourself excited to sit down and write some more. Before you know it, your chapter or book will be complete. So my challenge and suggestion to you is to write for a minimum of five minutes a day for five times a week and to experiment with these four types of writing forced edited flow and floppy. 4. Outlining Your Book: Welcome back. Once you're familiar with the four modes of writing and you've created a brainstorm list of things to include in your book, you're ready to outline your book. Think of an outline like it's Ah skeleton that you're going to flesh out once you have the basic structure in place. As with the skeleton, you need every part working together as a whole for it to work properly. Some writers like to write a lot of short chapters, while others prefer to write a small number of lengthy chapters. There is no right or wrong Lane do whatever feels right for you in your book. In my case, I often brainstorm chapter topics and titles. So if I were dry, book about how to write a book chapter, titles or topics would include the following one. Knowing what to write to different modes of writing. Three. Creating an outline for overcoming writer's Block five. Conducting research six. How to rewrite and edit your work. Seven. How to get book published An eight. Marketing your book You may have noticed that these topics are exactly how this course is structured. Of course, these chapter ideas didn't magically appear in perfect order right away. First, I made a brainstorm list of a lot of ideas about writing the book, which we already covered in Section one. Then I tried to tease out what broad categories all these ideas fell into. In this case, I came up with a broad categories, and those categories became my chapter headings for some of my books. I've come up with upto 50 chapter headings. Every book and every author are different. You should do what feels right to you. Now, with fiction books, the process is a bit different. Instead of each chapter representing a certain category or topic in fictional works, each chapter represents an important plot development. In addition, fiction writers tend to be more creative in the titling of their chapters. For example, instead of a straightforward title to a chapter such as How to Get Published, a fiction writer might call chapter something in precise and poetic such Aziz, When Wild Bees, Rome or some nice 5. Overcoming Writer's Block: hello again in this section, I will provide you with many ideas and methods for overcoming dreaded writer's block. You've all experienced during a page not knowing what to write. It's a stressful experience. Fortunately, there are a lot of easy and great remedies to this common melody. Two of the best remedies I've already discussed. One simple way to overcome writer's block is to simply allow yourself to write sloppily. Most writers block is a result of trying to right well, if you give yourself permission to write poorly or sloppily, it often helps you break through any stuck nous you may have been experiencing. The other suggestion I gave you previously for Overcoming Writer's Block is to simply write for at least five minutes five times a week by attempting to tap into your creative spirit . Often, you'll eventually hit that creative spark. If on certain days nothing good shows up, no problem. After all, tomorrow's another day. Babe Ruth hit a lot of home runs, but he also struck out more than any other baseball player. If you keep showing up and making attempt, you'll soon be well rewarded with a few home runs. Now there are several great methods for overcoming writer's block that we haven't just discussed. One of my favorites is to use what I call helpful prompts. Helpful prompts are incomplete sentences that you fill in to get you started. Here's a list of several my favorites. One in essence, what I'm really trying to say is to one of the most embarrassing or funniest or miraculous things that ever happened to me. Waas. Three. As a child, I remember four. The best way to describe whatever your wind to describe it is, and five the five things I remember most about him or her is then they quickly go through the value of each of these sentence prompts. And number one. The essence when I'm really trying to say is, Well, that's helpful in assisting you to get to the heart of the matter. It can help you cut through confusion and say what you're really trying to say. For the second prompt, one of the strangers are funniest and most miraculous things I've ever experienced was well , that can help illicit useful stories for your fiction or nonfiction book. I have over 100 stories I've written down over the last 10 years, and I often insert these stories into whatever new book I'm writing. Since people love funny or miraculous stories, this prompt is a great way to help trigger you to write them down. Now the next prompt is as a child, I remember. This prompt can help you remember important events from your childhood. You know where your senses were more open and your imagination freer than they probably are Now some of your best stories can probably be located in those hidden childhood experiences . The fourth prompt was the best way to describe it is now. This sentence is to help you get more descriptive in your writing, whether you're describing an event or place or person. It's good to have a simple sentence such as this to help point you in the direction of greater definition and subtlety. You're good. Writing often involves helping the reader really imagine a specific person or seen, and this sentence will help you to flesh those things out. Finally, the last prompt was the five things I remember most about him or her is well, I like about this sentence is that it gives you a specific number of ways of describing a person. They come in with five different ways to describe someone. It helps you to imagine him or her much more fully. This could be helpful in both. Flushing out how someone impacted You are a character in your book or in making him or her very life. Like for your reader. As I mentioned earlier, I have a list of stories from my life that I've written about. As I reviewed my life, I simply asked myself, What interesting things can I remember from my life that happened during the years? Extra Why, for example, what interesting things can I remember for my life that happened to me between the ages 12 and 17 years old? As I think back about those years, I simply write a few words to remind me of key events. My story list from those years looked like this one moving to a new city and being depressed to my first kiss. Three. Going to the prom for my first girlfriend and her breaking up with me. Five. Winning a tennis tournament. Six. Smoking marijuana for the first time. Seven. Getting my first car, you get toe, see what I mean? what this looks like, anyways. Now these short phrases don't mean anything to you, but they certainly trigger many memories and interesting stories for me. When I've had Writer's block on a book I was writing, I'd simply write about one of these stories frequently. Writing about these stories help me to not only overcome my writer's block but also create a storehouse of stories that I've been able to insert into many of my books. I encourage you to come up with a list of interesting stories from your life that you can write about. When are you? Whenever you feel the urge, it's a fun, useful and interesting exercise. Now find a way you can overcome Writer's block is to experiment with external things that can affect your mood. For example, some people seem to write better when they're a bit drunk or stoned or on a caffeine high. Now, obviously you want to be careful about using any drug to spark your creativity because you don't want to become dependent on such things. Yeah, on occasion, I admit I found such things to be useful. Of course, other external things that can also spark creativity are things like a new writing spot or quotes from books were taking a shower or bath or listening to some favorite music. Your job is to see what gets you in the mood for writing and do that activity more consistently. I've given you a loss suggestions here feel freed and mix and match them to see what works best for you. If you try enough things, you'll soon learn various ways to consistently spark your creative news and overcome writer's block quickly and easily. My challenge to you today is to take any of the suggestions in this section and commit to doing it today. When you do your minimum of five minutes writing, I'm confident that you'll find it to be both helpful and useful in moving your book forward . 6. Researching Your Book: hi again in order, right? Well about subjects. You obviously need to know a lot about it. When I write a nonfiction book, I often read three or four books are similar to the one I'm writing, because I want to get other folks perspective on the same subject, sometimes their information or approaches helpful in triggering new ideas. Other times, when I read other people's books, I see what's missing from their books. This inevitably gets me excited because then I know my book will have a unique contribution . Another reason to read books on a similar subject is that if you later decide to go with a traditional or hybrid publisher, you know you to create something called a book proposal, we'll talk more about that later section. But just briefly in a book proposal, you need to state competing books on why your book is different than all the other books out there on the same subject. Now, for works of fiction, you'll also want to do some research. Whoever the research to do is for a slightly different purpose. You want to research the locations your book takes place in on the types of people that you have in your novel. That way, your descriptions will Seymour detailed and true to life. For example, if one of your characters is a truck driver from Alabama, it would be helpful to actually interview someone like that and find out what makes him tick. You may even find that you can go to Alabama and take a drive with such a truck driver. The information you gain from such an adventure can be well worth the effort for my novel called Conversations The Dog. I was not able to interview an actual dog, but then again, my dog, Sophie was more than happy to try to get me to listen to her, especially when it came to the subject of eating additional food and getting more biscuits . Okay, inside, I was able to interview a pet psychic and have her explain to me how dogs thinking and perceptions are different than humans. The information this pet psychic provided proved very helpful in providing details about the Dogs character in the book and made the book seem much more realistic. Besides, talking to a pet psychic is pretty interesting. One of the things I've liked about being a writer is that when you're tell people you're writing a book on a certain subject, everybody wants to be of help. By telling people I was writing a book about how different people experience God, I was able to get interview with Deepak Chopra and Mariam Williamson and Rahm Does and even the Dalai Lama. No, that's a way to really make your life more joyous when you can make your passion part of your income. Finally, a great place to do. Research is obviously on the Internet. For any subject matter in any location you can think of. There's endless amounts of information somewhere on the Web. You be careful. While YouTube, Facebook and Google can definitely be helpful if you sparingly, they can also be a massive waste of time and a distraction from gain your actual writing done if you're going to use the Internet to do research, to find exactly what you need to know and stay focused on just getting that information. If you're not careful, you'll soon be surfing the Internet instead of writing your book as an action item. One thing you can do now is decide exactly what books or what research you need to do to make your book as good as possible, Depending on your book and your knowledge base, that could be a little Azan, our of research or as much as a year. However much it is, the more you define what you need, the easier and quicker it will be for you to get the information that you want. I hope you enjoy the process. 7. How to Edit Easily: Welcome back the subject of editing. Once you written a full chapter of your book, it's time to get feedback and to edit your work. Even very experienced writers need a good editor. If you can't afford to hire an editor, you may get some benefit from having your friends or your mate or even computer software help you with your editing. So feel free to contact me now when using family or friends to help edit your work. There are two problems. First of all, they're probably not professional editors, so their feedback may not be that useful. Second, though probably not want to hurt your feelings. So their feedback maybe overly nice and therefore not very helpful when someone's going over what you've written, what you really want is someone with experience and someone who will give you constructive criticism. A good editor can really make a world of difference so, if possible, try to hire someone who is skillful and experienced at this skill. Now another decent and decidedly inexpensive option is to use editing software. Many of these air now pretty good. Frequently they have, AH, free version with limited abilities on a monthly or yearly subscription version that's much more capable. Three editing software names that I think are pretty good are one auto crit to pro writing aid and three gram early. They each work a little differently, So if you're interested in using any of them, I suggest you google them, read a bit about them and see what they can do for you. Auto crit will analyze your entire manuscript and suggests insightful improvements in terms of repetition, word, choice, strength of writing, pacing, momentum and even more. The report it can generate will force you to rethink every sentence and paragraph you've written. We have a free version that's pretty good and a professional version for $30 a month. That's very helpful regarding pro writing aid. This online to will analyze your content in terms of repetitions sent in plain proper use of phrases, writing style and more. The focus of pro writing aid is to improve the readability of your writing, eliminate all grammar issues. It cost $20 a month or $80 a year. Finally, Graham Early has a pretty good free version, but also has a very hopeful premium version with a lot more bells and whistles than the free version. The premium version is $30 a month or a $140 a year. At the very least, download the free version so you can make use of their basic suggestions regarding grammar and other helpful ideas. Another free and simple way to improve your writing is to wait a few days after you've written something and then read it slowly out loud. When you've had some time between your initial draft in your time for editing, it's easier to see what works and what does not. In addition, when you read something out loud, you can often spot sentences and phrases that don't work so well. I've I've often written something that I thought was really great Onley to find that when I read it out loud, it was awkward or wordy. Even if you hire a book editor, I suggest reading your stuff out loud first, so you can eliminate some errors before you send it to your editor. So your task now is to download a research and editing software and or get some feedback from someone like any skill. You get better editing with practice, so begin your practice. If you want additional help, feel free to contact me. 8. Getting Your Book Published: Welcome back, finally, how to get your book published. So let's say you finally finish writing your book. Congratulations. Now you need to decide what to do with it. Basically, you have four choices. You can one try to find, ah, literary agent or publisher to you confined what's called a hybrid publisher. Three. You can find a publishing coach or four. You can self publish each of these past have advantages and disadvantages. Yes, since you're watching this video, I'm going to assume you're not on already well known. Published author. If you've just written your first book, finding a publisher is hard, no matter how wonderful your book is. Publishers Air looking for people who already have what's called a big platform, which basically means a big audience who already knows about you. If you send most publishers your manuscript, they won't even read it. Yeah, if you think you have a great book, you might try finding a literary agent. Finding a literary agent is somewhat easier than finding a publisher. If an agent like your book, then their job is to market it to a publisher. This could take many months and doesn't always work, but it's probably your best chance of landing a book deal. The best way to go about finding a literary agent is to go to the website agent query dot com agent query dot com. On the left hand side of the navigation bar, you'll find a heading called writers. Under that heading, you can click on the words submitting to agents and how to write a query. You will tell you all you need to know to send submissions to agents on this website also lists hundreds of agents and what type of book each of them is looking for. It's a great resource. Another useful resource is the book How to Write a Book Proposal by Michael Larson. It goes more into death about proposals that then you'll find on the Agent Quarry website, and it is very helpful now that I've given you a lot of depressing news about finding a publisher. Let me explain to other options, which I think are better. First, there's what's called the hybrid publishing hybrid. Publishing, as the name suggests, combines the characteristics of different publishing models. First, hybrid publishers don't require agents they consider manuscript on their merits, and authors for their expertise. That said, Unlike vanity presses, who will print anything than author pays for? Hybrid publishers don't accept every manuscript that walks in the door. Each hybrid publisher has her own established criteria for what they're looking for in a book and in an author. But for hybrid publisher is interested in your book. They can help walk you through the whole publishing and even the marketing process. Now the rub is that you're likely to pay somewhere between three and $12,000 for their help . But for first time authors, that could be a small price to pay for not having to learn and do everything themselves. Another advantage of a hybrid publisher over a traditional one is the fact that traditional publishers can pay as little as 5% in royalties. Then hybrid publishing. The author received significantly higher rose royalties, which could be a high as 50%. Now, in order to find a hybrid publisher, you can simply Google hybrid publishers and read their websites for what each of them charge and what they do and what kind of books air looking for 1/3 possibility when publishing is to find a writing coach no, such as me, who can walk you through the whole process step by step. If you're looking to basically self publish your book, this could be a great and potentially less expensive way to get your book published without having to reinvent the wheel and learn everything yourself normally book or writing. Or you can Google writing coaches on the Web and find out how each person works with the authors that they work with last but not least, their self publishing. Fortunately, self publishing has become easier and easier with each passing year. After doing 12 books with traditional publishers, I decided to sell published my last three books on my own. Why? Well, with self publishing, you can definitely get your book out to the public a lot more quickly. It can take up to two years from when you write a book Till sees the light of day when you use the traditional publisher. However, when you self published, you can have your book out in this little as a week. Also, with self publishing, you get the bulk of the royalties yourself up to 70% if you publish with Amazon. And since most people now that buy their books from Amazon, self publishing is no longer has the limits of for the potential audience of your book that usedto have. So you may be asking where the downsides of self publishing well as I mentioned it, could be overwhelming at first, especially if you don't hire a book coach to help you through. The process also was so publishing you're fully responsible for all the marketing. Now it's a common misconception that if you go with a traditional publisher, they will market your book. In most cases, they actually do very little. So even if you use a traditional or hybrid publisher, you still need to do most of marketing yourself. And since marketing is such a big and important topic, I'll be covering that in the next section. So nowadays, there really aren't many disadvantages to self publishing, so let's talk about it some more. The most common and easiest way to self publish your book is to use the Amazon company, known as K D. P. dot com. KDP stands for Kindle Direct publishing. It's a very informative website that does a lot of things, and it does almost all of them for very little money. First, it has a lot of tutorials that can guide you through this self publishing maze. Second, it can give you all the specs you need to make a cover, get an eye spn number, determined pricing and decide whether you want just an e book or an actual print book. We're both. Then, once all that's done, it will even help guide you through the possibility of promoting and advertising your book to Amazon ads and free promotions. Also, if you get stuck, they have a help topic for almost any situation. Yeah, I warn you, if you do get stuck, it's very hard to get an answer from an actual person. Now, when it comes to format in your book and making generic cover for your book, even that could be done in the KDP website. Yeah, if you want a fancy formatting or a special cover specifically designed for your book, you can often find that done for a reasonable price at a website called up Work dot com at up work dot com. They have thousands of Freeland professionals who will bid on your project. So, for example, you can put that you're looking for a book cover designer, and a bunch of people will email you and tell you what they charge. Each freelancer even has ratings from past customers, so you can easily see who's really good experience and who is not. I use up work folks from time to time, and I've definitely found them to be helpful and very inexpensive. Okay, I threw a lot of stuff at you, but hopefully is help you decide which avenue of publishing you'd like to go. Once you've decided on that, it's time to figure out how to market your book, which we will cover in the next section. 9. Marketing Your Book: Hello again. Finally, marketing book marketing is a huge subject. I could do a full day course on the various ways to market a book and still just scratched the surface. Yeah, in just a few minutes, I hope to mention some of the basic, so at least you know what to research and what your options are. Now. If you have a sizable email list of people who know you and trust you, that's a good place to begin your marketing efforts. You'll want to email your list of contacts about your book and include a link as to where they can easily buy it. Many authors trying to get everyone on their email this to buy their book from Amazon on the same day so that it will make a splash and potentially become a bestseller, Amazon. This can indeed help to get people to buy your book on a certain day. It helps to tell them they'll receive various bonuses such as, ah, helpful video, our audio recording if they forward their receipt. Teoh, as I've mentioned, even if you go the traditional publishing route or ah, hybrid publisher, you're still the person who is really in charge of marketing your book. Sure, a publisher can help. Then reality. They rarely do much. So how do you get the word out, Especially if you're self published? Well, one thing you can do is send your book to online in print magazines that occasionally do book reviews. You can Google where to get book reviews and see what shows up. Some of these places will charge you money, but some won't, and you might get lucky. Another thing you can do, especially if you've written a nonfiction book, is write a short article that summarizes some of the best information from your book and send it to online and print magazines like Elephant Journal, Journal or medium dot com. In many cities, there are local entertainment type newspapers. They're always looking for content, and if your articles, timely or well written, you have a good chance to gain some free publicity. 1/3 way to market your book is through podcasts like I have a podcast awareness explorers, and I'm always looking for guests. Many podcasts are looking for guests with expertise, and by checking iTunes or checking for podcasts in the subject area on Google, you can find one toe may want to interview you, yet you should be warned that there's a lot of competition, a lot of competition out there, so you'll need to be persistent and write a good email to podcasts that you want to be on and tell them why you'd make a great guest for their podcast. Ah, Fourth way to market Your book is through social media. If you have a big social media presence, you can do things like post on Facebook or in a Facebook group that aligns with your book subject matter. In addition, you can do things like Facebook live events that can often attract an audience. Ah, fifth way to market Your book is to get friends and family to review your book on Amazon. More than half of all books now are sold on Amazon, So if you get a lot of five star reviews that can help prospective buyers know about, and perhaps by your book, a six way to market your book is to simply buy ads for your book. This really only makes sense if you have your books self published, because the royalty rate, when using a publisher is not high enough to make buying your own ads worthwhile. However, if you have self published buying ads on Amazon, Google or Facebook can be worthwhile. I especially think buying ads on Amazon could be a good bet. To do that. You can learn more at kdp dot com If you publish your book through kdp dot com, which is likely, since they're the biggest and easiest way to self publish your book, well, there'll be various paid and unpaid ways to get your book to an audience. I especially like there free promotions and kindle countdown deals as a way to initially get your book in the hands of readers. You can learn all about free promotions or kindle countdown deals at Katie p dot com. Just put those phrases in the search bar. You can even buy online courses that help get good at buying ads and marketing your book on Amazon. I've taken some of these courses and let me tell you, they're not for the casual person. This stuff can be really complicated. It's like nuclear physics, but slightly more complicated if you want to do it right anyways, if you want to know which courses I recommend, though, or who you can hire to help you market your book on Amazon. Just send me an email, and I'd be glad to steer you in the right direction. If you've self published a nonfiction book, you may want to use a marketing strategy that many authors have found to be lucrative in brief. What they do is they take out ads in Facebook that say their book is available for cheap. Let's say 10 bucks if they go to and by the book on your website, then at your website they purchase your book. But in the process of purchasing your book, they have to give you their email address Well. By collecting an email list of people who have purchased your eBook, you can use that list later. Toe up, sell them on various workshops and online courses. This is called the Funnel and Launch System, and you can learn more about it in Jeff Walker's book called Launch. Once Again, this is only for self published nonfiction, book authors and Onley. If you have a higher price course ready to sell buyers of your book, Ah, final way to market. Your book is to come up with a short 123 minute video that is cute and funny or for some reason goes viral. Here's a one minute video I did for one of my books that led to a bunch of sales in the constant dogfight with each part would be talked on, But you wish you were experiencing the warm glow of puppy love. Just take it one step at a time, and if you want help, hire a book marketing coach. 10. Final Words of Advice: well, you made it this far. Congratulations. By now you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed. You all you really have to do is take one small step forward at a time. However, it can definitely help to hire a coach or have a friend who's supportive of your writing career, who consistently cheers you forward on your quest. Writing the book and marketing It is a journey. It takes time, but you'll have an easier go bit. If you enjoy the process rare, then just focus on the final destination. One tool I found helpful is to ask myself each week what's one or two small steps I can take this week to move my writing project forward. If you just focus on taking small steps on a consistent basis before you know it, you'll have a done book when you're in the flow. Writing is a wonderful creative process that can fill you with energy and purpose. Just a zoo with learning any new skill. They'll be hard days and frustrating experiences along the way, but at the same time, it feels really good to make progress on a goal you may have had on the back burner for a long time.
