1. Introduction: Hello, My name is William Batten and welcome to my productive rising course. This course has lots of really cool tips and tricks on how to write more like Stephen King and less like George R. R. Martin. There's a lot of really simple things that you can do to really make the most of your writing time because for most of this, time is precious. And for most of us, we wanted to be writing more. We have a lot to say more than we could say in a lifetime, so it's important that we use that time wisely. It's a little bit about me. I write 14 articles a week these days because I have to blog's and each blawg. I upload an article every single day. So that's 14 awake. There was there was the occasional week where I might double what one of those blocks does . Just cause I'm promoting something cool. You want to really get the message out there? So I've written yet 25 articles in a week. No big deal there. Also write other books, articles, other really cool projects that require me to do a lot of writing after script out things like this course, for example, and the key thing is that I do all of this in my spare time. I have a full time job that also involves writing but is not not writing this. So all of this that I write and record everything else is done in those moments before work or after work or on the weekends. And I wasn't always like this. I used to struggle to write an article used to take me days to put together 500 words or is now I can get that done in. Call it half an hour. I just sit down, focus and get to writing, and by the end of this course, you will be able to do that, too. 2. Introduction to the 3 Phases: Now I'm gonna stop with something that was probably the most valuable thing for me. This is not something like here many other people talking about, but I'm certainly not the first to invent this. A lot of people and this includes May once upon a time, but sit down at our desks at our keyboards and go. Okay, I'm going to going to write something. Just gonna think of what that is. OK, I have an idea, right? It. Ah, that sentence doesn't quite work. Rewrite, rewrite. The end result is that I would spend hours trying to write a paragraph, and by the end, it wasn't even that good. So it was a pretty bad use of time. And then somewhere along the line, I just kind of caught on to this idea off, separating out my writing into three phases. Now, these three phases not only made by writing so much better, it made it a lot faster. It's incredibly fonts for me, too. Right now before it used to do. You probably take me a couple of hours to write an article now, often get them done in 15 minutes. If it's a really long and complex article might take me 30. Either way, I am so much better now using this three phases approach than I was before. And what are these three phases? Well, let's get into those in the next few videos. 3. Three Phases - Planning: the first phase is the planning phase. This is where you sit down, anything about what you're going to write in the case off my articles, I often just write a few key words. Oh, baby. A sentence that I want to include in the article kind of captures the gist for me if you're running an essay and might be figuring out what your arguments they're going to be. If it's like a scientific paper, you might be researching your sources and writing at his sources and getting some great, quite speedy use from those sources. The point is that this is just the idea phase. This is the brainstorming face. This is where you make a note of what you will be writing later. Now this is important to do on its own separate phase. And the reason why is because it's a very, very open, sort, off way of thinking. It's very creative. It's very spontaneous. It's about experimenting with ideas and and really just seeing what works for you. This is not the sort of off off frame of mind you want to be, have you writing? This is purely that research, brainstorming, creativity coming up with something cool. Once you know you have something worth writing about, you can put that idea toe to the side. And you can know when you come back to write later. You don't have to think about what to write. You can just get started writing. Trust me, it makes a huge difference. 4. Three Phases - Writing: the second phase is the actual writing process. Like I mentioned, it is great just about to sit down at a keyboard and not have to worry about coming up with an idea you already have your I. D. You already have your notes. You already have your structure. You pull those up from your planning session and then you simply get down to writing. And the key with this is you know, you what the plan is and you start writing and then you just don't stop writing. I know this sounds really simple, really obvious, but a lot of people get caught up with trying to either re jig the plan, which can work if it's a small, a small tweak or worse, they get into editing mode. This is where you see people do this a lot. And I used to do it too. Invite a sentence. Are that's no good to you. Rewrite the sentence are maybe this needs to go here. You spend all this time rewriting. You never end up writing anything. So this is important. Give yourself the freedom. Just be able to write to do nothing but writing. Then when you're done, you put the writing aside and a future time come back with phase three of the three phase system 5. Three Phases - Editing: The final phase of the three phase system is, of course, the editing phase. This is where you go through your working. You scrutinize things, you delete sentences, rewrite sentences, rearrange paragraphs, tweak with the structure of all sorts of different things, and it's important to do. This is a very in separate phase because each phase requires a different mind set with the planning phase, you just sort of dreaming up ideas with the writing phase. You're getting down toe work. No distractions is getting it done. The editing phase is where you start to criticize, analyze, critique, really intellectualized the writing process. If you try to do that while you're writing, most of us just trip over her own feet and we don't get anything done. If you do this after, you can learn to get into the right mindset for editing to doing this as its own separate phase with each of the other things, as they are in separate phases, too, really helps to clean up your own mind set with things you're bringing your most critical self, too. The editing phase and you're not judging what you're writing as you're writing it only when he has something ready to be edited. D, then start to edit what you've written 6. The Writing State: I used to go back to phase two for a minute. There, the actual writing phase. How is it that you actually get into this state where you just write easily right quickly, right? Well, for a lot of people, they describe it like the flow state, which is something that's been bouncing around psychology for the last few decades. Flu state is where you lose yourself in your writing. You're all these distractions disappear. You kind of lose your sense of self. You lose your sense of time. You just have, like, this really rich experience where it's kind of like someone else is doing the rising for you. That's a very good way of thinking about it, because if you think about your mind as having a conscious part in an unconscious part, writing is this really strange? Artful? We're taking unconscious concepts like your ideas, your emotions, your experiences, the message you're trying to get across and you're translating it into something that's a lot more conscious that you were using labels using like concrete descriptions and definitions. In a way, it is like someone else's writing for you. Your unconscious takes over, and when you're in this state where your unconscious is writing for you, you can feel really good. You can relax and you can just be really focused on the riding experience. This becomes easy, and it becomes easier to write than to not right when you enter this state where just everything just kind of just the words are just flowing from your fingertips. Now some people, that's how they write for others. There are a lot more conscious about how they're right. They constantly aware of where they are and what they're doing, and the little distractions can get to them. What if your style is that's okay. You'll find that if you add just a little bit more of this unconscious flow, state to your riding experience will become a lot smoother, a lot faster and a lot more enjoyable. So how do you actually do this? Well, it takes quite a bit of practice for some people. Maybe it'll become become easier to you. Maybe it'll be really natural for you once you try an exercise like this. Some people, all they need to think about is thinking about things less the way I like Teoh phrase. It is while you're writing, you want to think less and write more. Now that's all well and good. But how do you think less while you're writing some people, they need to just listen to the right music. For others, it's about creating an environment that has zero distractions, nothing for the thoughts to kind of latch onto. If you want to take this to the extreme end, and I do recommend that most writers all right is at least try this at one point. Recommend meditation because meditation is all about quieting your mind and just getting on with what it is that you're doing. And if you're an experienced meditator, you're able to meditate while you're writing. You'll find that the writing experience becomes so much easier, and what you end up writing will surprise you. 7. Scheduling - Basics: now, no course on productive writing would be complete without a little bit about scheduling. I don't want to talk too much about scheduling because there's a ton of material out there . You've probably heard a lot of it already. And frankly, there are other people who are better a changeling things than may. I will just cover these just so that they're in the back of your mind the next time you think about planning your writing. Having a routine is very helpful for most of us. Some people are really chaotic, and they just thrive on just being able to sit down and write whenever the inspiration takes them. The problem is, you rely on inspiration to write You're not gonna ride as much is if you have a proper routine. So if you can figure out a chunk of time, maybe it's always in the morning. Maybe it's always just before going to bed. Whatever it is, if you can think of some time, what you know you can set it aside and you really use that as your writing. You'll really come out ahead. Other people they need deadlines in order to keep them motivated because without deadlines . They find that their time just expands and expands, and they work slower and slower until eventually, they're not really doing anything. If you're one of these people who needs deadlines than figure out some way of setting deadlines, maybe you could be accountable to yourself. You just make a note in your diary on your calendar. Whatever it is saying, I will complete this amount by the end of this week. Maybe you need to bribe yourself. If you meet the deadlines, then you'll treat yourself to going to see a movie or something. Maybe you need an accountability partner. Someone who will to put it bluntly will shame you if you don't meet your deadlines. Some people they thrive under that sort of pressure other people makes them buckle. Other people. Still, I would wonder why anyone would ever need that. The important thing is to think about you and what would really motivate you to really get these things done? And finally, with these blocks of time that you set aside, it's important to have no distractions. As best you can understand. If you have small Children, you can't exactly differ all distractions. We're gonna at least turn off your phone, close off your Internet browser and just really focus on the writing experience during the time you've set aside for. 8. Scheduling - Overcoming Limitations: It was one other thing to think about when you're planning your scheduling. That's to think about what is your limitation. Are you limited by time? Because a lot of people say, I'd love to write a novel, but I don't have time. And yet, if you do, even just a simple examination of their life, you realize that they are wasting huge amounts of time watching TV. They're going out drinking every night. It's a clearly time is not the actual limiting factor. If you want to write, it's a matter off, prioritizing it and scheduling it in your life. But for some people, time genuinely is a limiting factor. Their life is just so full, and none of it is optional. It's just constant on the on the guy. If that is the case, I encourage you to figure out we can squeeze in some writing. It was just 10 minutes between this task in that task. Then take 10 minutes because with the three Phases system, you can do a lot in 10 minutes, you know, going to sit there wondering about what to write about. You're going to spend those 10 minutes just pounding the keyboard that's gonna be great. And if time really is something that you just don't have enough up to get writing done that I encouraged to be creative. What is some moments where you could get some writing done if you have a commute? For example, if you're on public transport, maybe you could take a laptop with you. If you're commuting in a car, could you dictate notes to yourself and then transcribe them later? I encourage you to be creative with this because there are a lot of great ideas out there that you could use. But if time is not the limiting factor for most of us, then what is it? Well, for many of us, it's a question of energy. You come home from work at the end of the day, and you have a few hours and year you could write. But it's just been a long day. You just gonna kind of veg out on so far. Whatever I get that it's, it's understandable we've all been there. If this is your situation, then I encourage you to schedule in your writing first thing in the morning before work. Yeah, even if you're a night owl, and you think you don't function all that well in the morning? This is okay, because with the three phases system, you don't have to think about what to rise. If you're still half asleep, like really sort of bleary eyed, you can sit down, you can write, and you will surprise yourself by what you write. It will be really unconscious because your conscious mind hasn't quite working up yet. Now, if you do this and you're not a morning person, you will need to pay attention during the editing phase because you will have some bizarre hypos. Probably you'll have some sentences that just do not make sense. That's fine. Most of what you write, though, will be really good and really surprising. If you have enough time and energy to get writing done and you're still not doing, it could be a question of motivation. Now we are going to talk about some other other tips and tricks in a moment. But if motivation is what's holding you back or a lack of it, then I invite you to really explore why you want to be a rise up. What is it that appeals to you Do you have some unique message that you want to get out there? Are you attracted to the lifestyle of being able to work at home in your own office? Whatever it is really imagine, really. Just take this fantasy to the extreme. If it's your message that motivates you, then imagine the whole world here in your message, being inspired by it really acting on and seeing the value in what there is right in front of them. If it's the lifestyle, then just imagine yourself in like the idyllic place. Maybe it's a cabin by a lake. You can wake up whatever time you want. Get down to writing and knowing that you are creating something amazing right now, whatever your fantasy is, figure out how to use that to really drive your writing experience. 9. Writer's Block - Introduction: Let's talk about writer's block. That's saying that you sat down at your desk, you at your keyboard in front of you. You have your plan and you're ready to write just for whatever reason. Just the words aren't coming. Now. A lot of people out there who think that writer's block is caused by emotion just caused by stress or it's caused by a lack of creativity or something else like this. For most people, stress will actually get them to write Mawr, which is why so many people like using the deadline approach. Getting closer to the deadline just can't help but right. No stress, though, isn't isn't necessarily the best motivator, and it's certainly not one that I use. Either way, that's not really was causing writer's block. I dug into the research a little while ago because I was curious. I thought academics do a lot of writing and so do their students. Someone will have had to have done the research with writer's block. It turns out some people did. There's some really good research out there on this. One of them identified seven mental strategies that people use that end up causing writer's block If you follow any of these strategies, then that will explain why you sit down and you just end up being defeated by a blank page . Once you know what your strategy is, though, you know how to overcome it. Let's look at these seven strategies. Seven. Incorrect bad habits now. 10. Writer's Block - Rigid Rules: the first bad habit that causes Rice's block is following rigid rules instead of guidelines . Now there are a lot of rules out there about writing, and some of them are really good. The problem is that if you follow them to strictly, you can get in trouble. Now I know a lot of people when they're thinking about, like an essay or a short story or an article. They think a lot about the first paragraph, the opening thing. Because there are rules that tell you it has to be punchy, attention grabbing, exciting. That's to be unique. It has to hook the audience in now. All of these are good things to keep in the back of your mind. But remember is just a guideline. If you follow it like a strict rule, then no wonder you can't get started with your writing. You're gonna write something, and it's not happy with it because it doesn't meet these lofty, almost impossible standards. On the other hand, if you just start writing and then worry about that later in the editing phase, you'll find that you get your writing done and your opening paragraph will be a lot better . Then, if you spent an hour just torturing it into into perfection, 11. Writer's Block - Wrong Guidelines: now, the second way to really create writer's block for yourself is following the wrong guidelines, because there are a lot of people offering their advice, offering their wisdom as to what good writing looks like. There are plenty of people that tell you all writing has to be formal, whereas if you're writing something from a marketing perspective, that will almost certainly bite you in the pot unless you were actually really planned for it. They're people who say that an email has to be between 308 100 words long. If you want to capture someone detention, that's not true. I write email marketing things all the time, and any length works as long as it serves the purpose. There are people who tell you that an essay needs to have three arguments in it. If your essay is stronger, I really having to one or from having seven. Then that's the guideline you should be following. There are a lot of all of these guidelines would create urgently created, I think, because people had no idea how to start. Like there are a lot of amateurs who like How do I write an essay and someone says, Just keep in the back of your mind. Aim for three arguments. And that's actually not bad advice, because the rest of the essay feeling from its from that. If, however, you treat that like it's a rule, even if you treated as like a recommendation, you could very well be trapping yourself in a set of guidelines that aren't really right what it is you're trying to create. 12. Writer's Block - Too Many Guidelines: the third bad habit that will cause writer's block is having way too many guidelines. Now, if you take a look is a really simple example, he's hey can get in trouble with just two really good glad lines. Guideline one. Brevity is the soul of wit. Guideline to you want to include lots of anecdotes, stories, a lot of things to really engage the reader's attention and make your your writing memorable, because if it's just a list of facts that that's a bit dull now, both of those guidelines are excellent things to follow their both really good advice. The problem is, if you is, that they kind of contradict each other. And so if you're trying to pull your both at the same time, you might be getting into writer's block because you want to write something. Then part of you says yes, that meets that guideline. Or but no, it doesn't meet that guideline. So scrap it. Just just don't use it. Think of something else, and then you think of something else, and there's just another contradiction. So if you're following 10 or 20 guidelines in the back of your mind, even if they're each individually an excellent thing to do. You could just end up with this web of complexity that stops you from writing anything. This is the case. Let's take it a breath and really focus on which guidelines you should be focusing on and ignore the rest. 13. Writer's Block - Perspective: the next cause of writer's block. I like to call, bringing the wrong perspective to the writing. Now you see this a lot with people who went through academia or some sort of engineering or scientific or mathematical discipline. And they used to writing in a really passive long, verbose way like the writing is very dull to read, because that's what academia expects. That expects people to use really long fancy words. It expects Third person expects passive writing expects all kinds of things. If this is your background and you sit down to write a short story, if you accidentally bring that perspective to your writing, it will be really hard to write anything. And, of course, it goes the other way to If you're used to running short stories with lots of flowery pose , sort of active writing, you're trying to write an essay or thesis. It can get very difficult to even get started because you write a paragraph in. You just know it feels wrong. The best way to overcome this is to think about really good examples off the writing you're trying to recreate. So if you're trying to write a short story, what if some excellent short stories out there maybe take a moment to just quickly skimmed through one. And the idea is not to copy anything but to kind of just keep that sort of that, that energy. That's sort of the quality off that writing in the back of your mind. And if you write from that place, you'll write something that's unique. You'll write something that's yours, invaluable. What it will do is it will become from that style that you just love so much. 14. Writer's Block - Chiselling Plans: now the next bad habit is to do with the planning, and that's chiseling your plans in stone, because with the three phases, you spent the first phase coming up with ideas coming up with a structure. Maybe a list of arguments for your essay, maybe a list of plot points for your short story. Whatever it is, the problem is that you don't want to be too attached to this structure. The structure is there to serve you, not the other way round. So if while you're writing, you find that the writing is going in a different direction to what you had planned, take a quick moment. Ask yourself if this is okay. Are you getting off track? Or, more likely, have you unconsciously found a better plan to Fuller? If this is a better plan to follow, then follow it. This is your unconscious mind telling you that it's coming with a better way, a new idea of doing things. If you try to shut that down, well, you end up sort of fighting yourself and your internal dialogue instead of focusing on the writing starts going back and forth. It's like I have come up with this great idea, but we're gonna use it clear going this way over. The idea is really good at what? We have the plan already. So we gotto go to stick to the plan. If that is going through your head while you're trying to write, it can be very, very distracting. And yet another cause of writers walk. 15. Writer's Block - Complex Plans: and similar to that last cause of writer's block is making your strategies to complex the idea that the strategy is it's supposed to be a high level guideline. The plan is supposed to point you in the right direction, not necessarily tell you every single step along the way. I've already mentioned that are writing my articles based off often a few key words like one simple idea. While I'm planing, I don't actually know what I'm going to write. I know that it'll include certain things. I know that I would use this argument or this metaphor or this this structure to it. But what I'll actually rise will end up surprising me. If your strategy is to precise, if it's too complicated, if it's too locked down, that doesn't give you the freedom to move and breathe and kind of get into the flow of writing now for some people, they need a plan. This this this structure. This is complicated, and if that is your riding style, that is your thinking style. Then go for it. I find more often people make plans that are too complex rather than too vague 16. Writer's Block - Ignoring Feedback: in the final cause of writer's block is when you ignore feedback and information. So, for example, when I first started writing about writer's block, I had a vague idea of what I was going to talk about. I wrote out a plan. It was gonna be quite good. Then when I started looking into the scientific research that started looking at what other people have written in scientific circles about writer's block, I ended up completely changing my plan. I think maybe 50% of the original plan survived to the end, maybe probably less. And that's OK because I brought in new information and the plan was free to evolve. This is true also, if you show your draft to someone after you've gone through the three the three phases, you show your draft to someone and they have different ideas. They have suggestions. Now you don't have to take on board every suggestion that other people give you well. You do have to do though it is, at least consider it. If you're rejecting a piece of feedback, know why he rejecting it have a very good reason for rejecting it. Then you're free to do whatever you want, use the feedback not. But you know you not just throwing it away because someone else said it or it's an attack on your ego or something. More information and more feedback overall will make your writing better to make sure you focus and pay attention to it. 17. Destroying Writer's Block: in total. This gives us seven strategies in which to destroy writer's block. No matter how it comes to you, The first strategy is to soften any rules you have into more looser guidelines. For example, right, how people speak is less useful than aimed to write how people speak. Second strategy is to be highly selective of any rules You cape, keep them small in number and never let them impede your writing while at your desk. Right? Right. Anything is a respectable rule toe have because it compels you to write. If you have rules that prevent you from writing, then consider getting rid of them. Give no loyalty to your rules or your guidelines. This is the third tactic if a guideline usually serves you well, but it's impeding you with this body of work and get rid of it. It has served you well before. It's not serving you well right now, so don't listen to it. Good strategies are closer to philosophize than tactics. You're not invading a nation you don't need, Ah, whole logistical supply line figured out you're writing. They're simply focus on the writing. Your strategy should be flexible if it serves your writing. You should. You should twist yours. Your strategy into pretzels. You could shatter it and completely discarded as long as it serves your writing. If your strategy doesn't serve your purpose, it cannot be a good strategy. So abandon it with haste and finally seek information before you write and seek information after you. Right now, some of these strategies for overcoming writer's block contradict each other. You might have noticed the 1st 2 country each other pretty well. They're allowed to because they're not rules the guidelines, their philosophies, some of these things you'll already instinctively do. Some of them won't help you, but the ones that do help you transform your writing and get rid of your writer's block forever. 18. Procrastination - Overview: What if you don't have writer's block? What if you're What if your struggle is more fundamental than that? Because with writer's block, at least you make it to a keyboard. What if you're a procrastinator, though? What if you have a history of procrastinating? What do you do then? Because it can be hard to even bring yourself to the act of writing. I have identified eight different causes of procrastination. This is not something that I've come up with by myself. I borrowed a lot of different ideas for this, but I find it's very useful because in my experience, you cause of your procrastination is going to be one of these eight different things. And this is really good, because maybe you already have a procrastination busting strategy, and maybe it works view 80% of the time. If so, congratulations, That is awesome. The thing is, though, if you have a different form of procrastination, for whatever reason, on this one day, then that strategy might not work for you. So here are eight causes of procrastination, and some of the strategies I have used to overcome each of them 19. Procrastination - Overwhelm: the first cause of procrastination and either in no particular order, is feeling overwhelmed. You know what you need to do, You know the plan, you know, just need to sit down and get started on it. But it's such a big thing that whatever you think about it, it just it just feels like it's too much with this. It can come about if you're trying to write something huge, like a novel or a PhD thesis or something that you know will take months, if not years, to get done. It's natural to feel overwhelmed with something that just feels like it has no end date. Stuart or the end date is so far in the future, you can barely imagine it I want to do. In this case, at least this is what works for me is to simply take the smallest step in the right direction. If you are wanting to write a novel, can you write a paragraph? That's all you need to do, because if you write enough paragraphs that eventually you'll have your novel if it feels too overwhelming, beauty even see the end that don't worry about the end. Just focus on what's right in front of you. Take the smallest step in the right direction and then, if you feel like it, take another and another. 20. Procrastination - Stress: the second cause of procrastination is simply feeling stressed, like you got a lot going on. You got distractions in your life, whatever is, and you're just feeling a bit frazzled, which again is perfectly natural. If this is what's stopping you from writing and encourage you to just take a deep breath, pay attention to something really good in your life. If you need to take a short break, then take it. Remember, you will feel better once you've done some writing. Cause if you put this off, Venice is gonna add to All of that is, if you get this done, then that's one more thing you can take off the list. Get a little bit more control back in your life. It's not to really enjoy and relax in this moment once again. 21. Procrastination - Fear: some people procrastinate simply because they were afraid. They're afraid of failing. It's a part of them thinks if I don't even try that, I'll never fail. Now this obviously is not a winning strategy. This will not get you far in life. On the other hand, this is something we all experience at one point or another. I want you to remember this the next time you're thinking this way. People who are far less capable than you have succeeded. You have more than enough of whatever it is that helps people succeed. Whatever it helps people to reach their goals. You have that. And if you do not at least to make a try on this. If you do not fail gloriously or better yet, succeed at what you're what you're trying to do, it will tear it. You'll feel so much regret over it. It's what I want you to do is simply focus on what it is that you would really like to happen. You can acknowledge the fact that you have your fears, your concerns, your anxieties. You can forgive yourself for these. You can understand that simply by showing up by putting in a decent amount of effort. The worst that can happen is still better then, if you never share it up at all. And who knows? There is a decent chance, especially if you stick with it that one day you will achieve even mawr than what you can imagine. Right now, the world belongs to those who not only showed up but kept at it to put everything else aside. Focus on what you should be focusing on and do your best to enjoy this experience. 22. Procrastination - Priority: another cause of procrastination is where you find yourself saying I don't know what's important. I don't know what I should be focusing on. This is so much to do in any given day, who knows what what is right. And I have experienced this myself quite a bit. I've had a mental checklist and I go, Okay, I should get started on that all. But before I do that, I should probably do this all. But before I do that, I should probably do this on it. Really feel like doing that right now? That's bit of better Put off till later. These thoughts, things go round and round and around you spend a lot of time thinking and very little time actually doing anything. If this is happening to you, I encourage you to make a plan. Put everything in writing. If this is the only thing that you get done today, that's still better than what What was going to happen. Otherwise, just chasing, chasing your own tail like that once you have a plan, once you understand what needs doing before what and when it needs doing by, you're never going to be confused as to what you should be doing. You always know what's most important, which means you can just get down, get to work and get it done. 23. Procrastination - Clarity: a similar course of procrastination is not being clear on what you should be doing. It's kind of like if you're tryingto build a business, there's so many things that involved in that, and if you're new to entrepreneurship, most of those you don't even know that you don't know about. So it's really it can be really confusing and vague, which leads you to just not taking any action at all. The remedy for this is similar to the remedy for the last last video. Have a plan. Refer to that plan. If the plan doesn't feel right like it's missing something, then do your research. And I hope that you do your research before you come up with a plan. And while you're following the plan to once you know enough about what you should be doing what you could be doing, it should be a lot clearer about what you could be doing right now. In this moment. So like everything else, once you have a plan, everything becomes a lot clearer and a lot easier, more valuable 24. Procrastination - Mood: another common cause of procrastination is simply not being in the mood to do something. I used to get this all the time. And what really saved my hide with this is when you, you know, you need to be doing something any, not in the mood for it. Get started. Set aside 20 minutes for the task because, yeah, you might not feel like you're in the mood, but you cannot laced. Do 20 minutes. Make the cool thing with this is often the 20 minutes You have a mission to take a break to . Stretch your legs too. Go outside, get some fresh air. Whatever it is that you need, because is the important thing is not so much getting the 20 minutes of work done, which is pretty valuable in itself. 20 minutes of work sure beats zero. The trick is your training. Your mind? Yes. You weren't in the mood, but you showed up and you got some work done. Anyway, do this enough. And your brain learns your brain goes okay. I'm not in the mood, but I know we need to get this done so well, Let's just get it done. This turns you into what other people call a really disciplined person with really strong willpower. And at first you might be confused because you're just doing what comes naturally. But I mean, it becomes naturally because you train your mind to think this way. It's the next time you're not in the mood. Set a timer set 20 minutes, 30 minutes. Whatever it happens to be and spend that time working hard, then you can go back to wallowing and not being in the mood, knowing that you got some work down. 25. Procrastination - Self-esteem: a second last cause of procrastination is similar to feeling like you're you're afraid I'll let you. You're not gonna be good enough. And that's feeling like your self esteem has been shot. Maybe you had a bad day. Maybe you got, like, a bad review. Maybe you got some really harsh and unfair criticism. Feedback, Maybe other things in your life aren't going so well and used to feel like you don't have the self esteem to get this writing done. Well, the advice for this is again similar to where you feel like you're afraid like you're not gonna be able to get it, get things done if you feel like you don't have the right skills, the rights, the right attitude, the right X factor, you're feeling like you just don't have the self esteem for this. I invite you to show up to write anyway because some really untalented writers, some really just incompetent people have written amazing books. They've delivered amazing speeches. They've invented incredible things. If you show up and if you make an honest effort, then it doesn't matter how much confidence you have in yourself right now, and it doesn't matter. Even if you're right, even if you don't have talent, I suspect you have way more talent than you're giving yourself credit for. But even if that is true, that's okay, because if you keep showing up and you keep making an honest effort, eventually you'll succeed. It's just a question of time. It's how you dismantle a mountain. It's how you eat an elephant. It's how you do anything worthwhile, one step at a time. You keep showing up and you only ever fail when you quit. So if you never quit, you never fail to keep writing. 26. Procrastination - Perfectionism: and finally, we have a cause of procrastination, which is quite similar again to the self esteem issue. And is this idea that whatever you rights just won't be good enough to which I say perfection is garbage? Perfection is terrible because you're saying it's not gonna be good enough, but by what standards? If you're aiming for perfection, then yeah, it's going to fall short of that. But if you want to make something that's good enough, here is my strategy for it, right, right? Anything, Even if it's a train wreck, even if it's just an awful this to festering pile of words, that's fine, because you can edit that and transform it into something better. You can iterated it. You can get feedback on it. You can get guidance on that, and you can take something that's just Werfel and iterated into something amazing. What you can't do is iterated. Nothing, and what you can't do is achieve perfection straight out of the box. So if you worried that what you write won't be good enough, it probably won't be. That's correct. But that's not the point. And that's not a problem either. Simply write anyway, read back over it, read back over it with the aim of improving it. If you do this a few times, eventually your writing style will be so good. You realize you're editing things less and simply writing even better and better every day , all the time. 27. Conclusion: So I invite you to take a moment to really have a think about everything we've talked about and how you can integrate this into your own writing regime. We talked about the three phases that breaking your writing time into the planning, writing and editing phases, we talked about the writing state have no matter what your writing style is, it's better to think less and write more. We talked around some things with scheduling, some of which you probably already knew, some of which, I hoped inspired you to think about how you play in your time in a different and bed away. We talked about writer's block and ways to overcome it, finally and forever, and procrastination had to deal with those times where you just can't bring yourself to show up at your keyboard. I have. With all of this, you can learn and really process it. Let it become part of who you are because these writing tips, thes strategies, thes philosophies, thes guidelines, they transformed my writing approach. I could not write 1/5 of what I currently do now, even on my worst week, without these sorts of ideas, the most productive I have ever been with my writing has only been thanks to these strategies these tips. So I hope you can use these two as I have, and hope you can find a real joy in writing, not getting through it, because you have to not kind of forcing yourself because you got a message to get out but really enjoying the writing process. If you have something valuable to say, it is important that you say it. It's important to the world, hears everything that you have to share. This is what productive writing is all about. There's only so many hours in the day you can spend writing. There's only so many writing moments in a life time that you have. So I hope you can get the most out of all of these. And I hope that it transforms your writing experience. You can go out there and transform the way the world thinks thanks to your vision, your dedication And of course, you're writing
