1. Session One What is All About: Hello, my name's Ian Panofsky and I live in Hobart, Tasmania. And I'd like to give you a warm welcome to uniquely crafted pepper grinders. I thought that my sensible thing to do might be just to show you some of my work. And then you can decide if you wish to progress further or if Let's see what you think. Okay. Well, I hope you found that interesting. And if you wish to continue that when you Craig, There are a couple of things you need to know. Of course. You will need a wooden plate. Now it tests activating flash. I've got the cheapest wood lies on the market, I think. And it works perfectly well. The second is you have to have some basic skills in wood turning. Again, I don't have to be super craftsmen, all super craft person or whatever it is to actually know how to use it and what you don't know, you can look up on other school shares and learn how to use it. Well, there's a saying that project that you have to do is make your own pepper grinder and find a nice piece of interesting would follow the steps that I've given you. Use your imagination and your problem-solving, and then make a lovely meal and usual pepper grinder. Ok. Just a little point on presentation. You'll find a lot of the presentation here. I still slides. I did a lot of videoing. And I've gotta tell you watching some real stonewalled attorneys like watching paint dry, it's excruciatingly boring. So I taught us a lot of work that I'll be showing you, a lot of stills and talk you through H1. Hope that works if it doesn't, let me know in the forum and I can add more information. I'll be using arts, Seoul guy, realities from America, diaries, best quality ones I could find. I'm not recommending them because I've got a commission or anything. I just think you can use other parts if you wish. But the designs, when I will be using these, I think they're very good quality. Alright, well, if you're happy with that, let's make a start with treasure hunt seal. It takes about an hour. 2. Session Two Treasure Hunt: This is session of treasure hunt. This is really fun because you had to go into the bush or into the terrorists or your next door neighbor and fine, lovely bits of tree trunk or a tree branches that you can use for your projects. Let's have a look at some of the things. Some of the ways to do that. Well, I must say some of those timbres that I say makes my mouth water with excitement. When I look at this, I think one of things I could like, now, one might do that of course, is to have a template which I've created outline for you here. The template chose roughly the width of the diameter would need. And I've also added in the length of the different sizes that you might need. Very useful tool to have when you pottering through the bush. Remember though, may cut the wood a bit longer, perhaps another two or three inches, then you actually need just to be on the safe side rather than being too precise interstate remember, it's only the base of a pepper grinder which needs to be wide enough for the mechanism. The rest of it can be quite narrow. So just keep that in mind when you're deciding on what, what would you want to use? A word of caution here, you don't need to make sure the wood is dry. I I I got into trouble because I died. Turn one which we store grain and peppers or went moldy. And other good luck. I'd suggest that you buy a moisture moisture gauge, such as this one, and just just check your work before you pass on to somebody else. I find it useful to trolling through Mexico a conflict trying save yourself a lot or a hassle I sketched you buy one of these cheap and easy moisture cage. It'll save you a lot of hard, I think in the end. And I find it very useful to have now that you've got your wood altogether, your pics of Trey, the next step is to begin work on the outside. Let's say how that works in the Nixon. 3. Session Three Starting on the Outside: Now, these are the techniques I've discovered. I'm sure you will create more different ways of doing it once you get going. That's why it should be. I tend to start with the outside of the wood first. And these are the steps which I'm going to show you now. The first thing to do is to cut the pay support to the length that you want. And at half an inch for the chalk. When the chalk is open to its full width, the piece of wood will then slot into the chuck in order to halt its saying, See here I'm steadily moving down until I get to the right depth and can do that with a gage that I have just to make sure. And in fact, in this case, I went a little bit too fast, but that's okay. It's important to work out where the top of the grinder it's going to be. You make that charge judgment yourself. In this case. I think it's probably a bit too high, but that's just the way it's kind of aid because I've already done it. The indent you make is important because that's where you will cut it with a saw. And it's quite important to truncate that as accurate as possible. That's just a matter of finishing it off and turning it as, as you wish. All sorts of examples of this target too far and then a little bit of sanding. So here are some examples of products that are trapped in the past. And you can see they vary from not touching at all, just a bit of a cleanup and an oil to taking perhaps a little bit in this ones, a lovely one with liked on the outside. This one I've turned a little bit, but not much in the same with this one just to make it feel better when you pick it up by hand. So have a think about what you wanna do, but remember, it's your work. Okay, so now you're the outside of your, your project is complete. Let's have a look at how you can drill out the inside. So pepper in there make it turn. 4. Session Four Moving to the Inside: Okay, so now you're, the outside of your project is now complete. Let's have a look at how you can drill out the inside. So you always put pepper in there. This plan clearly shows the diameter of each of the sections of the pepper grinder lading from forty two hundred forty five, twenty eight, twenty five. And here examples of the drill. It's attached to a lionfish, the chalk, but might shorts are very slurred speech and drilling. So here I'm showing you the three different bits which you use. The wide 1 first guy scene about 20 mil. The next one is Gaussian, is a 28 mill, and that guys is that 30 mille roughly. The next one is more tricky. That 25 guys right up and pass the line, that UV light for the top. And I'll explain this a bit later in more detail. A bit light time. How to 25 drill bit just past the point where you cut the top off. And that will give you the depth. And this is how it will look when you've completions for drilling. This is a good time to do the final finishing or as much as you can before cutting through the line to take the top off from the bottom. And this is how it would look quite. You've cut through and now you're ready for doing the tricky bit. One final thing, it's worth sending the end of it while it's still on the life. Much easier than doing it by hand. Lighter how I find now that you've drawn the how into the wood, the next part is just a little bit tricky. So I've made it a separate section that is finishing with the top part. Let's see what happens. 5. Session Five Tricky Bit: So this is slightly tricky bit. I've tried lots of different ways and this seems to work the best. Say how it works for you. If it doesn't, well, try something else. Say would you think of this? This plan shows where the insert are, the 25 milk dao will be. In order to hold the two together. It's inserted into the top part. And here's an example of the Tao. Adds some clue, put it into the hall and cut it back to your size. So next step is to find the center point and drill all the way through to the other end. So give it a quick sand, move it out a little bit and then cut the waste off the top. And this is what the top will look like when it's completed. Now you pretty much completed your project. But of course you need to put the fittings in the next section. I'll do that. Finally, I just mentioned the olfaction salt shaker that, that, that you can buy parts for. Similar sort of principle drilling collage, work that out in a nice little rubber stopper which goes in, pushes in at the base, been hard to get out, but he saved that. Take quite fun to stretch if you have small bits that are too small for a pet garden. I loved the lichen on each one of my favorites. 6. Session Six Inner Workings: So these are the parts that you require. A net is mentioned that come from Chef speciality. I find that the good and the lovely constraints centrally big sinner type box and read the newspaper and you ask them nicely. But I'll also send it without plastic, allows him to test feisty present prevent that. This plan shows how all the parts fit together hadn't makes sense. You can see here the part. So we're going to print a pepper grinder. And I think probably the best thing to do is to start with the top. And it needs this little cap, which goes on here. I find it's best to put the chart through and hold it in place like that, and then drill holes so that you don't even know where to try and get to the center as you can. And if that slides nicely, then it's completed. The next thing to do is to insert the U-shaped clip into the bottom. Now, if you push it in mind that sometimes it's necessary to a little groove into here because if you use the 42, drop it. Summarize, pushes him. And then what I do is put the screw housing at this point. Now, the next step is to connect these two pieces, go together like that. And to slip in the shaft that drop it into place. So it fits comfortably in there and put the top on like that. Now, then port on the, on the scope. And of course, you can say that it's too high. Now, there's a trick to do is push that right down. I had turned it either and push that down as well. And then mark the point, sorry, Mark at, at this cutoff point here, right at the base. Now, once you've done that, you then take it all out that and cut it off at Describe, then put it in a vice and with a hammer gives a few Hard Knocks. And you'll see that there's a little group there which comes up, what do you call it or what you call it? But it it it it will shape around and stopper coming off. I want you to it's funny how words come gears in it. What I was trying to say is there should be a little bird here. You can feel it. And now I know that's completed. So I cut off. Thank did a few times where there is few times of the hammer, it's got an icicle br on there. And now I can put it all back together with o. Well, I'm back as you, as you realize are dropped it on the floor. It's finding aid is silly thing when silly things from favor watching. Now the difference is that's all together now, as you can see. And the spring that you get is dropped over into position like that. And then drop it into the base and into place like that. Push it down. And you had for little plate which goes over it and push that into place like that and then put the screws in. It does help with the screws to put a bit of paraffin, drill a hole and put a put a paraffin or soap on them. I go. Well, I'm back as you as you realized are dropped it on the floor. It's finding aid is silly thing when silly things from people watching. Now the differences that's altogether now, as you can see, the spring that you get is dropped over into position like that. And then drop it into the base and into place that push it down. And you had for little plate which goes over it and push that into place like that and then put the screws in. Does help with discouraged to put a bit of paraffin, drill a hole and put a put a paraffin or soap on. Then it's a matter of putting the top on, crossing your fingers where he can't crush fingers there, but hoping it all works. Pulling the top on. The really nice thing about this is that the title you can see here, the tighter you make it, the finer the pepper cried wolf B, and then it simply turns like that. Alright, and there you have your pepper grinder already to be finished. Great, great feeling. I've gotta say. Now, while I've got you here, I thought I'd show you the salt fittings as well. They're different, they're ceramic because obviously you can't have salt in a metal grinder because it'll just corrode or so. This is ceramic, nicely made, going same principle except it doesn't have a spring dropping into the base. Put those bits together, which is fairly obvious. Drop him in like that. And then the peace that they have this fits either got the hole drilled, they're fixed out there like that. Screws in. Same thing. And and of course it hasn't S and not a paid on the int. That's a lot of fun. Salt pepper sort of make a nicer, nice combination. Well, now it's complete. Works. And next session we'll have a look at how you can finish it. 7. Session Seven Free to Be: I call it this session three debate, because this is where your creativity, your imagination, and your skills as an artist craft personally accountable for. What I'm gonna do is show you some of the ideas that I've done over the years and that this is not necessary for you. This is where you can explore and try different things. Why I loved this project is because every single one is different. Everyone is really an art form. And when you passed onto somebody else, they've got some unique. There's none other like it in the world. So that's important to love and appreciate and enjoy. One. Let's see what you think. Sometimes I just like simple. Just take in in a little bit to enjoy the beauty of the wood and oil or waxed. These ones are from the hawthorn tree where my, my wife crop. I just felt the beauty of the bark were Solar, which needed to cento oil and just enjoy them. Here I experimented using bank CIA and had a cento oil to finish them off. Either they were quite interested, bit like Don Alex, right? These are oak tree branches from a friend of mine who sadly had to cut the tree down after many years of children showing them, as shouldn't say, I've tried a little bit of experiments here with using this bit of engraving and the soldering iron can make the dark artistic experiments in which I loved doing and a choice H one. And again, it might give you some ideas. The first one has the most famous mathematical formulas if ever created. And the second line has a ritual, ritual as bad a copy of Beethoven's music and rich, and this was my lighthouse phase. As you've see a lot of fun. Again, engraving and churning. Just a few more ideas to think about. Found too, when I oil than it was much easier to have them hanging. Finally, this is an idea you might like to use it so final for putting the pepper in or salting. As you know, it often goes or on the floor than it does to the grinder. So you might like to experiment. This is a little gifts as well. Well, that's about it. I hope it's worked for you. But as with any teaching, sometimes you leave bits out which obvious to you but not to Rios. Let me know. It's not too hard to edit and films and more information. Of course, we'd like feedback. Chin needs feedback. And so it can be instructive to meet positive at. Let me know I'd be interested. So thank you very much for it. And that's all feature on.
