About This Class

Watercolour is such a flexible and versatile Medium,  It can not only be used in layers for super realistic styles , but also used in parallel with other media to create more free and whimsical looks. Possibilities are endless.

In this course I will show students first how to ink their drawings in a stylized technique with inked pen, and then adding watercolour washes to the drawings in a very fun and loose way.

1. Introduction : Hi. Everyone will come to my class in scale. Share will come to my art and my studio here in Toronto, Canada. My name is Nancy Mab. I am I'm a professional illustrator and artist living here in Toronto, Canada. I consider myself a mixed media artist, someone who enjoys mixing different media, using different surfaces, different boards, sometimes having wet media sometimes dry on the top. I seem to enjoy really the effects that I get from mixing this media. And I love the way the possibilities are, Really? Unless when you're using this technique. So today, what we're gonna do together is going to be how to produce a whimsical mushroom or plant or flower any of them that you choose. The technique is gonna be this team. We are gonna do this beautiful, whimsical mushroom done in ink pens, um, watercolor brushes, rubber cement on Simple what a color. So let's have some fun together, and I'll see you in the classroom 2. Materials Needed: okay. In terms of materials, let's start with the paper. The best scenario would be having hot press 100% cotton watercolor statement. You can see that. I think it's a fi Brianna. It's an Italian brands, usually the best. It's a very smooth kind of paper, not much texture. But I know this is kind of an expensive paper. So if you're just doing tests and tryouts, I would put that away and I just go with normal watercolor paper or make speedy a paper. They there were only depends on the size you want. You would say this one's have these air, the cold press that have a little bit of a texture you can see in the life you can see the texture. I'm not a big fan, but if you are and you just want to spend less money, you could start with a cold press. And like a normal paper like that in terms of the water colors I use, I don't use anything fancy. It's just normal pelican. I think it's German brand, very cheap brand, and every once in a while, when I run out of some colors, I like the koi ones. They're very affordable, and I don't see a lot of a difference between this and that or any other professional brands. And so, yeah, don't don't go very picky on the type. Even if you have, I would say, even if you have some kind of inks I left. He was colored inks as well. They would do the same job, the very transparent as well. So the other thing, definitely. You need to create this washy effects in these white parts. It's rubber cement, which is basically a glue. I get it from my coaster in Canada. I'm sure in the States it's available that Michael's as well. It's It's a type of glue, basically rubber cement. It's a little smelly, stinky, but it drives very fast. You can see it's very kind of goopy. As a group, uh, you will need in pence. Definitely. I like to use the unit pens you any pain. I think it's a very universal brown on the micro loan. They have different sizes. I have 0.1 point five in here, but make sure I don't know every part of the world has this different brands. Make sure whatever brand it is, it's water fade, waterproof and think proof. So that's very important because you don't want it to be smearing once you add the water color, right brushes. Make sure they're soft water color ones soft, preferably saber ones. Consider herself ones. Don't use the the personal ones that are thick, and I prefer to be like them to be around. And last thing, that's probably while all of you already have it. It's the actual to etch pencil cause we're gonna draw the mushroom first. Actually, act is my favorite. Make sure you're not using anything that has a B two B three because it will create some kind of smudges. And then the racer. Simple Eraser. So I guess we make some mistakes, so let's go and start the process. 3. Preparing paper and drawing: Okay. As you can see, I have put my watercolor paper in here at the back, over simple board or something that stiff you could use. I like to use the back of my paths. Yeah, and make sure you tape it all the way nicely and not only corners one part, because if you don't do that after when you have the watercolor or any kind of wet media, this whole thing is gonna start having buckling up and having all those air bubbles and something, especially when you frame it afterwards. So any time you're using any types of wet media, it's good to tape it all the way. I'm just used normal practice which can easily come off. You can see here it comes off easily, and it doesn't ruin the paper or magic. David's another option. So let's start drawing very lightly the mushroom. And I'm not gonna do the whole thing. I'm just gonna do this three pieces in here today. I like to use my at a pencil, usual, which is my favorite, but it doesn't give any mess. So very simply, I'm gonna draw the mushroom very, very simple. Go on. Tour outlines I'm not going to details the details offer later on on. Once you are in kinks, are you? That should have been smaller here. Yeah, the mushrooms might look a little different right now, but as long as they look like mushrooms, they're fine. So I'm just putting just the basic idea of where goes what? Yeah, uh, having a few more details? Can I? I'm not a fun off adding too many details in the drawing. I like to other. Mostly when we're going to the thinking or when we, uh, calling painted tow it. So just as an indication, I think that would be enough. Few of this leaves. You can see how loose I draw. And if there's some extra lines that you're not gonna be using, he raced them. Because once you add water color to them, you cannot e waste them anymore To see how simple and how easier drew it groups a few more details in here. Fiving mushrooms are very cool creatures. I know there's not really creatures and they're not animals there. No plan, something in between. But whatever they are, they're shape. It's always fascinating to me. And they have so much variety in nature so much. Okay, then, in the next video, I'm gonna show you how to do the thinking. See you then. 4. Inking: Now with our Inc Pan, I'm gonna start with a 0.1, which is the thinnest one. I'm going to start the inking process because you're start light first. And I like to keep a very loose that's really part of the worms. A costa nice and loose to go everywhere and then after and the second layer if we want some parts to be much darker. When I had some accents to make it darker, But for now, especially if you're illustrations of small size, you don't need to use a very thick one. I always thought liked to be safer. And then if you wanted to go darker and darker, you could always go darker later on. But if you start to dark and then you don't like it, that's gonna be a problem. So you have toe do the whole thing again and again. Um, not really making this in style on krypton directions. I try to eat lots of variety to them. Also, the poker doubts that were supposed all right places that would my bigger picker what? But zero. I'm gonna go especially on the conjunctions. They need more attention and more thickness, more value turned out to be very precise again. I find it much nicer when you try working loose, and I am not falling exactly on the same lines. That's that's nice about it. Great multiple length. That's another conduction. So I'm gonna make a dark Spiros. - And at this point, I think drinking is pretty much done. Let's think dry nicely, and when it's dry, I'm just gonna erase the lines that I don't want. If there's any left over from pencils, get rid of it. This is almost ready to be painted with what, of course. 5. Adding Rubber Cement: so our mushroom isn't. I see. I think by now if you see there still some lines that are not necessary Teaser the previous pencil lives I would strongly recommend to erase them before you start watercolor in them. Because the minute you start water coloring and you covered a pencil, you cannot erase anything yet again to make sure there's no lines you do not need. Nice and clean. Now I'm gonna start with my rubber cement high will be adding it to my foreground, which is basically the mushrooms, three mushrooms and these two leaves on the little bit of it in the background to create some nice textural effects so nice and thick I will use it on the mushroom itself to cover it. Rubber cement. It's basically like a masking agent, very similar to masking fluid if you have used it before. But I find it much more flexible and easy to remove copper to masking fluid, and that's why it's my favorite. I'm not being super precise, so my four round is basically mushrooms, all covered, and you can see I'm gonna some kind of toxins in the background. And even if it's too much I'm gonna remove it. That's basically for this nice, cute facts that it creates in here once you are pain. So it's these white, and it's good that it's really random and accidental. That seems to be what most people like it. Try not to have the same amount of product and everywhere scatter them nicely very randomly . And I would say Give me, like, 10 minutes to drive, just checking up everywhere my phone around nicely having rubber cement. You don't want to add too much in parts that he already has. He might remove it if you keep adding over and over, so let's get a nice 10 minute drive. 6. Painting the Background: So now they're rubber. Cement is all nice and dry. You can see autistic es, but it's not gonna come off if you touch it. We're gonna start with the background and I'm going to continue until here because they usually like to have a nisman yet around. So I'm gonna have it around here and automatically going all the way. Teoh, Wherever the tape is going, I like to start with lighter colors. So yellows on old cars usually are great to start with. Very washy. OK, we don't want anything too much as the mushrooms are nicely protected. You don't have to be worried. So you could easy to go over them because wherever Samantha's covering them anyways, and you can see those parts that there's reverse a man coverage like in here, it's gonna stay white. Crazy is nice effect. I like to go particularly darker around the mushroom. On the rest. I like to keep it washing. Once you have your life color, you could start adding a little bit darker. I want to start with green a little bit a little bit of green. Yeah, especially down here with a grass nous solo's gonna be but keep in mind, very washing. Okay, still Mary washing. And if you find yourself too much pain, you just try to blend it out with some water. Mary Washington Some orange, My stock. Truly, you can see I'm using a lot of analogous colors, colors that are very close to one another on the color wheel because their ruling watercolors like Whenever you want to have a color that's very different. Let's say if I want to add suddenly blue like that, you have to wait in between layers, so you would have to let this layer dry first and then start doing that. Oops, I think the yellows to Lemony trying to blend that out, it's sure was said, more grain in here. Try not to rob the paper too much, especially if it's make one of those chief mixed media or like an everyday watercolor paper . Not all of them are very tolerance, so I'm not rubbing it too much. If an area is still what, let it dry and then try to add some other colors. I don't like to have all this street strokes. That's why kind of use more through the brush to get rid of the strokes. Well, this pulling your brush strokes, I like to keep it more natural. Can see about two. Started to have some wrinkles on my papers, but don't worry about that. It will be easily fixed after it hold drives because we taped the whole thing. So don't pay any attention to that small. Let's worry should be having about that. Maybe some brown but very washing. Okay, not twin tens, since I have a little bit of greening here. So let's have more reddish orangish brown's in hair warmer ones. I'm a big fan of warm tones, especially you want to use nature when I painting mechanics or plants or flowers warms are usually working pretty well for me. So if you happen to do something like that, suddenly, don't worry. This whole part is covered with rubber cement. You shouldn't be worthy at all. When it dries. You just remove that. You could do this right now. That is what. So it's not penetrating into the paint paper at all. It's not gonna be absorbed, but it's nicely covered with rubber cement, So just accent a few more accents and again, I would like to wait a little, so it dries. And then I'm gonna have a little bit of stronger tones. More rats, Oranges. Dr. Braun's in general. I advise you to keep the background flight and put most of the effort or the intensity off the paint on the mushroom or the foreground itself. That's usually much, much better. He makes it pop out much nicer. So let this drive. We might need to add a few more layers, so gonna let that dry nicely. 7. Painting the Mushroom: Now I'm going to start paying the mushrooms itself. So with a little bit of a smaller brush before what we use, what background was bigger. Now I'm using a smaller one, but they are soft and pointy, as usual. I'm gonna start with the lightest tones. Okay. A yellows. Well, it depends. What kind of much from it is? But most mushrooms up stems that are very light. And I won't be working washing anymore. I try to be more intense because I really want the foreground to pop out. See, I'm using colors more tense. Let's, um, on the left side, there's my light source. So everything you don't have to read it. It's not must make sure that you are leading some parts. Wait. That's really the beauty of watercolor. You need some parts to be white, Your Honor, at some more color, I would wait So the first layer dries. You could work on somewhere else. For now, it's, um, orange Making nice. With just out of the picture groups too much. I'm just going to move it with some water there. The big mushroom here. It's gonna be mostly dark around there, You know that again. I would like to start Boots on over. Seems to be a very useful color. I use it a lot. Okay, I'm burnt Sienna. I don't like to jump directly to door colors. So even if something is brown, I've trapped layer on the red Witzel yellow, orange, red, orange, princey, ana. And then go Sure do. I can go a little bit more expected on the browning here as well. So you can see I'm using color much more boldly because I want these really to pop out a little background or you could do the opposite. If you have a background that's really strong, you could have your mushroom being washing. Have some green as well. I try not to you that if I have waiting here trying not to use too much green in there, so I'm just diluting it or making the other green on the outside afterwards. Darker, stronger. This brown is nice as well. It's not too dark, very transparent. It's gonna think I watch understand how much pain you need to go strong or not strong, but after a few practices, you well easily get the hang of it. You can see how loose I work for the top of the mushroom again, I think yellow like toe a little bit and we said, It's nice to have some parts left, Wait, trying to create the poke adult field. And we said, Let's have the lights right on the left side. I'm trying to It's gonna be covered with red anyway. But the yellow that you put in there is gonna create a nice base and your final results gonna be much more natural than just right. That's out of the tube, which looks plasticky and not cooked or no, not natural Again. I must wait in between layers so my red would go stronger if my yellow is Dr Right now I'm just getting an orange for now. But once it dries on a stronger red, much, much stronger you can see you're not getting a strong effect right now because you're yellow. And there it is not dry yet, So it would be good to let that dry. Meanwhile, I could have orange. I'm already worried about being exactly in lying, getting out of red. It's not too big, too. The whole thing is whimsical, so it's gonna make it even more fun. You can see this barred. Always drive, touching to know if it's dried or not. If it's cold, that means it's still wet. So a lot of times I think it should be dry by now. But it's really not, so. Don't trust your highest. I will trust your touch if you're touching and it's still called. That's definitely no dried yet could use a dry, careful, faster results. Definitely. Hair dryer sometimes used the fan off the microwave of the open, which is cool. Saves me sometime. Do you have in here? So now I need to make it a little more pushing the colors that are more. Hopefully, this is dry, not yet covered dry. So let's go back and work a little bit. Understand as well. You can see as I'm coming to the top players. I use paint much bolder, much thicker, not washing anymore, because I really wanted to stand it out. And if you feel it's too yellow, a little bit of brown course you could at some purple use the effects off, complemented if you want driving those colors that are very harmonious together, I don't suddenly out something out off palette. If I want to do that, I have to make sure that the layers on the radar, Dr Hopes, forgot about this Little League. That's, uh, maybe a different, let alone more of a lemony yellow since work on a green there. It's still the first of the year, so I might be very washy. But once we add some green, it would be better. And I'm gonna use a stronger green afterwards so it doesn't blend too much with the green of the background. I should have to let this drive. Let's go back with a smaller brush now, pointy ears on doing those lines that we got in there definitely darker in the center. Using brown, you could make some blue to brown to make a darker brown. Try not to use Black E if you really the very, very end of certain areas. Not everywhere. I'm really not a final black at all. It makes the whole thing look a little dirty. You know, if you're having a city and gets polluted in it, all right, well, no like that. So I'd rather make some blue with my browns to make it. The sun is pumping out. That's nice. You can see a little bit of air bubbles on hobby, but they were all going away once. The whole thing is gonna drive. So don't worry at all. No, I think I can have some nice jet bold red. Yes, because the layer under it has dried. And if you want good, strong red, I will makes the cool water the cool want on the red one together. And there's a quite fix here. Have a lot of it for watercolor that's really considered sick in this. I think I don't really. I feel is a pilot because I don't need to make very certain color. So I try to Well, when you wish you washing strong already. 8. Ink Touches: Now the whole thing has dry wherever cement waas, right? The mushroom is Ryan Background Mistried. I noticed that I needed some little bit of more green More definition around here. Let that right out of that out of my greens in there. I just noticed usually after at watercolor that the little bit off the ink fades away and it's normal because the watercolor covers it. It's transparent by still covers it. So I like to go back with my pen and add some more accents to it. Make sure you are using the waterproof pen. You do not want your black ink to smear away. You do not want that. After this, I'm gonna remove all my rubber cement and see if I need a little bit of more in the background. You're going to see that some of these air going to get whiter like that once you remove the rubber cement, especially on the big parts. Since this is really the center of the picture, make sure it's nice and dark under. Fine. Would you get a few minutes to dry and then I would remove a rubber cement any time you want to rob the rubber cement er at something to it. It's good to wait to dry or use the dryer because whenever it's wet, the paper becomes very sensitive. I really need to give its time. He lose very slight. I can still feel someone My rubber cement in here, not a big dio. Once we remove it, I can see works for not. 9. Splashes: now that the whole thing is dried and could see I added the inks. So it's nice and dark. It's clear right now so you could go over it if you wanted more doctor defined outlines. But I think for me it's fine right now. I would add a little bit of splatters on it. You Some people like it. It creates this cool effect. It adds to the whimsical mess of it to conceive that make sure, no doing too many. Make sure you are grabbing color. Otherwise it's gonna be all water only and give it a few minutes to dry, and then we will remove the rubber cement. You could let there ever cement be there, but it's gonna be always sticky forever. So I like to who knows after time what's gonna happen with it. So I like to make sure that the rubber cement is removed 10. Removing Tape and Rubber Cement: Now it's time to proof it. Rubber cement from the background. You can see all those works were becoming much more white, more vivid, which my life and again, if you don't like them could go back over with paint on, go over them if they're a part that you don't like that but try to have colors very washing similar to us, so it doesn't look like a very big difference. You can make sure back strike splatters. Keep touching any feeling. They're still river so much. I like to use the edge like that for bigger and for smaller areas using it like that. Very it's removing your taste. Uh, I think it's better to leave it for a few, maybe one hour, actually to remove the tape, but for the purpose of the video. And that's what I'm saying, because you could have. If you live in like an hour, your paper's gonna be nice, smooth and flat. So even now it's going to be. But it's gonna have a little bit of Rome, a little bit of wrinkles, not something you want. But it's not that you should see how beautiful those white just they're gonna turn on your paper is not gonna be. I don't Because dropping is really good deluxe. Last thing is just cited, and there we go. 11. Final Look: As you can see, our beautiful mushroom is finished. Nice with a white border, you can see it's a little different on the original that I was working. But this one was on the smooth paper, so the effects is a little smoother. But in here there's a little bit of texture and depth because it's cold press. So now you can see how beautifully they look framed, and you could have serious of different ones in the series of four. And after that you could start working on different subjects with the same style, like I have birds, have garlic, got the sun, and you could keep going on possibilities, really endless. 12. Conclusion : you can see our beautiful mushroom is finished. Nice, happy and whimsical. It's gonna be how it's gonna be framed. Another option that you have instead of using watercolor paper would be illustration board . It's just more stiff, I'm afraid so. It's my might be probably easier to mountain are you just don't need mountain. It's just nice of framing. Thank you so much for watching my class.
