About This Class

This week we are going to take a look at the effects of industrialization in the late 19th century, and how goods were produced, sold, and marketed.

This 3-week course is a quick dive into a very rich and complex story. This story traces the emergence of design as a discipline, why things look the way they do, and how designers approached specific design problems in their work. This history informs our work as designers, and it is why learning this history is a core component of the Graphic Design curriculum . As mentioned, this course will focus on four key periods or themes in design history:

  1. Early Mass Marketing, which emerged during the Victorian era (late 19th century)
  2. The Bauhaus, the influential German art, architecture and design school from the early 20th century
  3. Modernism in America, which covers the influence of the Bauhaus in America in the postwar period and into the 1950s
  4. Graphic Design Radicalism, a period of radically different approaches to design from the late 1950s to the early 1970s

This course is about understanding and recognizing concepts, not memorizing facts. You will be looking at a lot of images; remember these are examples to reinforce concepts and are not necessarily canonical examples from this history.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify and summarize the goals and intentions of successful graphic design
  • Identify, interpret and analyze why things look the way they do now, how they’ve looked in the past, and why “looks” keep changing
  • Examine what qualities distinguish ordinary design from exceptional design and learn how to assess such qualities.
