1. 01 INTRO: Hello and welcome, and thank you so much for joining me today is worth non professional videographer based in the UK and discuss, I'll be talking about how to create a professional looking lighting setup, which works great for skill share online courses and usually videos. I'll show you in a step-by-step process, health law, a space for cinematic fail at depth, uncolored TO space, and create fluttering soft light without spending tons of money. Let's work together and take your videos to another level. I hope to see you in the class. 2. 02 CLASS PROJECT: For the class project, I would love you to follow along with me and take your space to another level. Using creative lighten, feel free to ask a question and share a link to a video you've created. Some herself and others can see how your lighting setup looks. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you guys can come up with. 3. 03 HARD & SOFT LIGHT: So first of all, let's take a look at the difference between hard and soft light. Both look right for certain circumstances. Here we have a hard light lights in my face and this is a bare LED bulb pointing straight at me, just off to the right, a little bit of shadow. And as you can see, the shadow fall off is very abrupt. The distance between where the shadows stars and becomes a full shadow is very, very narrow. This hard like be perfect for dramatic scenes in an action movie where the story is being pushed towards a fast-paced fight scene. Or maybe to show that the talent is being lit by a very harsh sunlight, such as a desert scene. Now while this light has its place of storytelling is not the most flattering. It tends to show up Skin imperfections more. And overall it can look cheap in a studio environment. So to make this hard light into a soft fluttering light, we need to add in some diffusion. Diffusing the light will make it appear softer. And there are many ways in which to diffuse the light soils will be looking at two common methods here today. Firstly, we have the bounced method. This method of diffusing light works great because it's simple to do and requires no investment in gear whatsoever other than the light itself. Or we need to do is point our light source at a wall opposite to where we are positioned. This means the harbor is now being spread as it reflects back off the wall and is being diffused in the process, making for a softer shadow fall off. Now, there are a few downsides to bouncing light. Firstly, we need to have a war in the right place to bounce from an ideally that all needs to be white because whatever color the wall is will be reflected back at us and we'll resume in different colored skin tones. So if you have a wall nearby, then great. If not position some white card behind the light or even a photographer you reflect a such as this can work really well. Often fail that this method works better as you can position the reflector or card at the correct angle and offers more flexibility downside to bounce enlighten spill. Now what do I mean by spill is that it's very difficult control the speed of light when light is being reflected or bounced. And if we balance that law is gonna go everywhere, is not very directional. This means that we're wasting a light source, which also means you'll be losing light power in the process. Bouncing light often requires a more powerful light or the need to increase the cameras. Iso. Spill is also a problem when you don't wish to have a particular area of nullspace lit. So for example, the area to my right here, or which only to be very dimly lit. Otherwise it'll be too distracting. Now, you can control the spill by flagging, which is essentially blocking an area with a dot card or cloth. But it's, but it starts to become more difficult and more complex to do. So my preferred method of diffusion is to place a diffuse panel infront of the light source. So the light is directly facing me between myself and the light. We can place a diffusion material to make that light softer. There are tons of different types of diffusion you can use from professional silts and Muslims to a plain old white bedsheets. Now you could just throw your material diffusion over your life, which would help. But the bigger we make the fusion software that light will become Using a large diffusion panels such as this component. Well, but what you'll find is a lot of the light will be reflected back in the opposite way. Came wastes the light and causes the dreaded spill. So to really make the most of our life a soft box or octave box such as this newer one is grey. This are the two things. First, it will concentrate the light source in the correct direction and also diffuse the light to. Soft boxes come in a variety of sources. But the bigger you go, the more diffuse the light will be. Our use for for October talks which I find perfect alight MySpace here, this universal knee were ArcToolbox will take most LED panels and only costs around 30 pounds. So it's very, very cost-effective in Dade. 4. 04 THE MAIN LIGHT: So firstly, to build the lighting setup here in MySpace, I'm gonna take a look at the main light, which is a very affordable 50 pound UNO, LED light panel. Now you really don't need to spend a ton of money on lighting gear to get great results provided. You can use a lens with a wide enough aperture. Essentially, the water we take the camera's aperture, the more white we can soak in, which in turn means the less powerful the light needs to be, the less powerful the light, generally, the cheaper the light. The void actually also creates a nice soft blurry backdrop, which will give the overall look a more cinematic and professional fail. So it's a win-win in both situations. Before we set the light path and my skin, we really want to concentrate on the ambient light in the space. So come back to the main light further on. But I just wanted to touch on the light and power an aperture setting as this will play a big part for the rest of the setup. 5. 05 ADD DEPTH: Adding depth to your space can really help you make you stand out from your background. Says Turn off the lighting hair, and let's talk about lighting the space. And we can build the setup from there because I have a good distance from where my chair is positioned through to my back wall, I'm able to create a soft blurred effect that we see with the wide aperture set to F1 0.8. Now let's turn on the rim lighting. I have this movable LED rail here in the center of my studio rave. And these are great. They are really flexible and can be positioned wherever you require the light to fall. Have warm LED bulbs. This adds warms my backdrop of unquote theists, lighter, my background with a warm glow. They also have a worldwide hair with a warm LED bulb, which adds the light of the background. And this makes it look like all of the light in the space is being lit by the single bulb. You can easily obtain the same effect by adding a table lamp in the background or any other lighting you may have handy. Perhaps you have a light that you use from another room. You could utilize. If you didn't have ceiling lights that you can use to help Lotte your backdrop. You can purchase a cheap LED panel and place a warm colored jelly. Or it could go one step further and pickup an RGB LED panel, which lets you choose the color of the light if you wish to use. Now upon lots in setup a my camera's aperture and shutter speed, correct, or can now adjust my ISO to make the ambient room writing the desired brightness, see how increasing the ISO increases the brightness of the room. I'm going for ISO 400. On average, schema ISI fairly low because I have that wide aperture of F1, 0.8. If your lens doesn't go that wide, then you may need to increase the ISO accordingly. 6. 06 HAIR LIGHT: Next, we are hair light now, highlighting can help to give separation between yourself and the background. I'm a little bit restricted to what I can do here. And I'm using a fixed wall like that's already been in place. It's already fixed the wall. But if you have another LED light that you can use and you can get really creative here. And what I'm doing for this example is just adding a little Qu rim light my shoulder and hair. And it's subtle, but I think it works really well. Nikolai also add some color contrast. This corner of the background, which just adds in some color depth. This is just a creative choice, but if it, it works really well for my setup here, I've gone really cheap pair and I've just got a coup LED bulb. And to make life more directional, I've got a tube around it and that bulb as a blue dry sack bags, which actually it diffuses the light and it works quite well and it costs a couple of pounds. I think utilizing what you have can often be just as good as expensive setups. 7. 07 PRACTICAL LIGHT: Particle lighting is a term that is used for any light source that is positioned within a scene and use more as a prop. But that's actually like the scene itself. The book that you can see in the background could be classed as a practical SO2 can this wine bottle here it's more right. Now, are needed to balance the background light with the light hybrids. My ROI and for this I bought is very, very cheap. Led lights that fits inside an empty one bottle or they got paid four pounds, isn't it looks great with the soft blurry you get from the wide aperture. You can use practically anywhere in your same where you feel you need adept or color or just some interest. 8. 08 SETTING THE MAIN LIGHT: Now we have the space lit is tau1 to light myself. And as we mentioned earlier, we have got this fall for ArcToolbox and I'm going to position this just off tomorrow it and as close as I can get it without it being in the shop. This is going to give me that nice Rembrandt's style light where you see one-sided model face being lit entirely than the other with just more AI and the chiefs and shed I fall off. The closer the soft boxes to myself, the softer the shadow graduation will be. Those are the light positioned a little higher than my head, which helps put the catch lights towards the top of my pupils. I think little details can really helped get professional look. Incentive power. I'm just going to adjust the strength of the light into my skin reaches around 65 IRA on the Scopes. Now you can check this in your video editing software will do it in real time. If you've got a camera monitor that has scopes are used the atomos ninja v to check my skin tones and my skin brightness. Again, this rotting camera can really help babysit my white balance and my camera at this 0.2, I'm setting my white balance to make sure my skin tones are correct. The Kelvin scale to set my white balance as a fine, This works the best. I'm using 53 thousand Kelvin, which works from my setup. But you can check this with your scopes as well in your editing software. You know, you just come up with to the vector Skype and new skin tone should fall on the skin tone line. Tobacco that hey, you're gonna need to mask off the image so only your skin is shared. And this means the scope will only be reading the color info from your skin and not the rest of the shop. Play around until you've got something you are happy with. Now, white balance could obviously be tweaked in post-production. But the closer you can get it in camera, the better the quality of your overall film. Obey. 9. 09 NEGATIVE FILL: Main reason I'll have my main light place to my right as opposed to my left, is sorry that it's facing away from this world tomorrow, but I'm not really looking to lightly space too much with my main light just for the look I'm going for. So angling, why helps with the spill? But what am I willing to my left? What happens is that light is being bounced off the world, my left and it bounces back, fills in some of the shadow details and electrons on my face. It's also a little bit colder as well due to the fact that the wall is a bluey grey color over there. To eliminate this, I'm gonna place in some negative Phil. Negative field is essentially it helps to soak up the light and stops it bouncing around. A black cloth such as this photography backdrop works really well as with the black blank or shape. I position this just out of the shot and hang it between two light stands and across pole. The difference between these two clips, one without a mom, with a negative field, you can clearly see the shadow is a darker and the light is much more controlled. Fish struggling with a light spill. You can concentrate the light coming from a soft box by attaching a honeycomb grid. And so concentrate the light source coming from the soft box. 10. 10 BE CREATIVE: You can easily change the fail of your space. We're making the background lighter or darker, or as heat my space fairly dark, which brings the attention's myself here. But this is just a creative decision. I think being creative with lighting is a really fun experience and something that will no doubt continue to evolve over time. I really hope you enjoyed this class on height by sharing our HIV.
