Project Description

Get Started: Share your favorite food to inspire your character!

Your mission is to design a playful character inspired by your favorite food!

GET STARTED

Start your project today by naming your favorite food inspiration. Go for simple shapes like circles and squares — ice cream cones, doughnuts, or slices of pizza.

The best way to use your project workspace is to dive in and share your progress over time, getting feedback from other students along the way.

GET SKETCHING

Start sketching some designs. At this stage, this is basically doodling. Get creative, and stay playful. Share your sketches in your project workspace. Everyone loves seeing these little guys!

POLISH IT OFF

Create your vectorized sketch. You can use any medium you'd like. I love Affinity Designer for Mac because it's so fast and smooth, and the features suit the style of characters that I enjoy drawing. You can download a free trial here.

Share screengrabs and images as you refine your character, taking it to the next level and getting feedback from other students. I can't wait to see how you create that surrealism and whimsy — make it jump off the screen!

QUICK NOTES

As you progress, I'd love to see these elements appear in your project workspace:

  • Your Food Inspiration
  • Character Sketch
  • Vectorized Sketch
  • Finished Character

Want to give your character a home? An easy way to create a background for your character is by duplicating some of its elements, then stretching and morphing them to fit. Play around with this technique to create a scene with extra punch!

Resource: Click here to download a free trial of Affinity Designer — perfect for playing around.
