1. Introduction to the Class: welcome to my master of I brought. Of course, if you're a student who hasn't learned how to play vibrato yet and you've never tried it before. This course is for you if you started to play vibrato, but it doesn't quite sound right. This course is for you. If you've played a long time and you've gotten some feedback about your vibrato not being where it needs to be or playing with the wrong form, this course is the right course for you. I go from the very beginning where someone's never played vibrato before and systematically add skills along the way to get us to the point where we can play vibrato flawlessly and with expression and with feeling. If you're ready and willing to learn some vibrato, let's get to it. 2. Introduction to Your Vibrato Instructor: My name is Chuck Millar, and I'll be your instructor through this vibe broad, of course. 3. How the Class Works - Learn how to get the most out of it.: this course is designed for the person who's never played by a broader before. It's assumed for those people taking this course that you're already in that beginner level , where you are starting to play in tune Already, you're starting to feel confident with reading some notes and you ready to take your playing to the next level. This course is designed in little sections where it's pre vibrato. One pre vibe Arado two all the way until we get to vibrato by, brought a one by brought 02 Since this course is designed for the person who's never played vibrato before, understand that the descriptions are very in depth. If you find yourself learning parts of this course faster than it's being taught, that's great. There's some things that you conduce you to be able to speed up your learning process. In the bottom of this course, in the left hand side is a speed feature where you can simply have me speed up or I speak a little faster than I normally would be. Where the message that I'm trying to portray is spoken in a slower tone, especially for new folks to be able to get it. As we move along in the course, it's going to be assumed that the student is learning as we're going. And as long as they have core concepts down, I'll do less speaking and less speaking, less descriptive talk and less descriptive talk as the course goes, so it becomes more streamlined as and get through the course. The course is broken up into a few different sections, starting with pre vibrato, one pre vibrato to all the way until we get to vibrato. One by broader to in the pre section just simply means that we're not actually playing your violin yet. It's broken down so much that we're just taking core concepts of vibrato and building all the way until we're finally touching are violent for the first time. Then we go through different periods and cycles where and it coast the end and were actually playing by barato up to speed. Wherever you're at at your own development in vibrato, you may want to move around to different sections if you already know so core concepts in our first few pre vibrato concepts. Since there's no violin being played, I get up really close to the camera where you don't end up seeing my head at all because we're trying to really get these fingers out there really close so that you can see him up close and personal toe. Get a really good understanding of what you need to learn at the very beginning. Very, very baby steps beginning. Remember, you can always pause the video at any time if for some reason you don't have your violin and we're about ready to player violin. Or you can always take a break and go back and rewind other core concepts if you for gotten them or just need a refresher course, thanks for being here and let's get started. 4. Pre Vibrato - Intro to Vibrato: all right. Most of us are right handed, but some of our son left handed this video will assume that we're all right handed, violent players. So the vibe barato arm that we're going to use is the left hand. If you happen to be left handed, don't worry. Just trying to think of every time I refer to the left hand as the right hand transpose it all be good. Now, the thing that we have to think about when we're thinking about by Brad Oh, before we even pick up a violin is how it works and we're gonna break it apart into its really small, digestible parts. So this particular class assumes that you've never done by brought a before or you're just starting out, and we're gonna take it all the way from the very beginning, all the way to the very end. Now, some things that we should think about when we're using this course is trying not to go ahead. It's exciting for me to learn all sorts of new information, but is also important for us to stay where we're at. We're comfortable for vibrato because sometimes it takes a student around 2 to 6 months to perfect vibrato, and sometimes it takes years. So if you move along too fast in the the Siri's, um, well, we're gonna have bad habits. We're also gonna have, uh, issues that are hard to correct by going too fast. So the best best tip for you is to just stay where you're comfortable and don't go on. Go learn this new stuff at the end of the course. Just stay right here. Uh, it might be tedious for some folks who already started vibrato, but you'll know who you are, and you can skip ahead. But if you never started, just stay right here when we get exercises in this course were expected as students to be able to practice those at home for about a week before we move on. So with that being said, let's get started. We can do vibrato on any one of these fingers are first finger, second finger, they're being or four thunder. But when we're starting this middle finger or the second finger, it seems to be the easiest for most folks to start on. So that's what will be starting on. You might find that you have a different finger. That's easier to start on. But but know that if you if I had 1000 students, let's say we'll say that 950 of them find that the second finger or the middle finger is the easiest to start on. Some, naturally, we'll be starting on that middle finger. Now, you also have to keep in mind that my finger to be presented to you in front of this camera has to be where my knuckles are faced away from me. You want to be taking your knuckles and face them towards your eyes. But since that won't help us learn, I'm having my hand the opposite way. Just just so you know, when we are actually practicing at home, we're gonna take our medals and we're gonna face them, are palm towards your eyes. All right, let's continue. So we're getting this middle finger or second finger, and the action of vibrato by itself is if I taken index finger on my right hand and I push it towards my ring finger, you'll notice that it's flexing from this top nickel. And when I say the top knuckle, let's just take a look at these different knuckles that we have. We have the top row of knuckles that are on the top of her hand on the adverse side of our palm. Then we have this flat part in front, and then we have these knuckles that we're talking about when I call the top knuckle. Although I suppose we can call these the top knuckles. But I'm really only focused on these knuckles as being the top and then these bottom sense of knuckles. And when I say that they're the knuckles that are closest to your fingernail, okay? And these top sets and bottom sets of knuckles are the ones that really flux. Now, in order for us to be able to flex these knuckles to do vibrato, we have to make sure that there's looses that possibly can be. And a common failure point with our vibrato is that we're pressing too hard with her fingers or holding too much tension in her fingers. So a good way to start is by clenching your fist and making sure that is as tight as it possibly can be. And then, uh, try to relax all of the muscles in your fingers and let them hang. And even for your risk right now, try to get all of the muscles in your forearm to relax the muscles in your wrist. Relax the muscles in your hand, relax and all the muscles in your fingers. And when you do, you'll notice that the fingers are kind of like when we learned how to use our bo the first time. They're a little bit apart from each other, so that means the fingers are squeezed together and they're not really far apart. Both of those things squeezing together and heaven finger sparked part requires your muscles to contract in a certain way, so they should just be kind of sitting there limp. Now I'm going to physically with my fingers hole in my third finger and my first finger, so I have my second finger sticking out a little bit. Notice that it's just jettisoned out from the other fingers at this point, and I'm going to take my ring finger and I'm going to push it towards my ring finger middle and your push towards the ring finger, and I'm pushing the side of it from this angle moving around, and I'm pushing this angle, So we kind of see is just hitting the side and about where the fingernail is. So we get a good point now from your elbow and your shoulder. You're just trying to hold them stationary. So you're not allowing the finger to push the whole arm or elbow. However, we are just pushing the finger in the arm, staying stationary. So let's do this together. We're going to get this in here. We're gonna go in 321 We're gonna push and notice at the end. My ring finger is over. The excuse me, My middle finger, his over top of the ring finger. So my second finger eventually goes over the top of the ring finger. 5. Pre Vibrato 1 - Example - 2nd Finger: welcome to your first exercise. This is what we get to practice, what we've just learned and in order to be able to get from point A to point B, not being able to play vibrato to being able the master vibrato. So we have to put the time in so that we can see the results of our practice having confidence and knowing what we know. Being able to do what's expected so that we can succeed and make little baby steps on our way to success and vibrato. Okay, here we go. Let's just do it. Explanation of what's gonna happen. First, we're going to do this exercise right with our second finger or middle finger, using our index finger to be able to push it towards that third finger, our fingers air home to be in so that our middle finger goes on top so you can see visually you can look down is to see where it is, and we're going to be using a Mech Sonoma Now. I've included a series of Metrodome beats in this course for you, um, and the range anywhere from 40 beats per minute to 150 beats per minute, let's say And they're intended for us who are having difficulty at this tempo to be able to say what? Well, Chuck, you know your started out of 80 beats per minute, but it's too fast for me. So I would make sure to include ones that are slower. And maybe we were. This is this is too slow for us. And, you know, I think I can push myself to do it even faster. So I've included some faster ones for us to be able to practice in these air tools. So practice tools are always in the bottom of the course. They're easy to find because you just go all the way to the course content and you'll find a whole section of Metro. No, and it goes from the slowest to the fastest, so you'll find the Metrodome clicks there, and they're all about 10 minutes of PC of plenty of time to be able to practice. And if it runs up, can always go back to the beginning and start over. So let's get started on our practice 6. Pre Vibrato 1 - Exercise - 2nd Finger: Okay, let's get started. I'm gonna play my metronomic at 80 beats per minute. It's a good a good number two started at and it's too fast again, if included some slower ones and Sylvester ones, that is maybe too easy for So here we go again. The fingers are gonna curl in the middle, finger gets jettisoned out a little bit from the other fingers, and we're going to use our index finger from our right hand push. So let's just do a demonstration first won t 341 Teen 34 Okay, let's do it together. We're gonna count down to 43211234 Teen three If your fingers aren't blacks in trying to relax your joints. 12341234 Key growing. If at any time this is pain before you might have some rheumatoid arthritis, you might have some other reflection that prevents you from moving your finger. This way, you don't have to continue along as fast or as long as we're going. Everybody was on at their own speed. And this video is intended for those who want to be able to practice and get most of the practice. So if you can continue on with me here one to keep bone this helps build flexibility in her joints. Won t three for one teen three won t 304 Keep going. Make sure your arm isn't moving but you're right. Arm is doing all the work. Gun teen three poor 3 to 3123 Go! Keep going Won t 34 gun Teoh three. Or you can go in. And if you feel fatigued at this point, it's okay to stop and give yourself a break and start again. But if you can and you're ready to go, it's still going. And 1234123 Parking going. 123123 hour. You can do it. Go on, come into the home stretch And 12341231 All right. That's five minutes. Now for extra credit. If you can keep going, we're gonna go on extra minute gone, Teoh. 34 Keep going. You can do it. It's important that what we're doing This We're not using our armed push against her finger , our fingers and our right arm should be doing all the work going. We're almost there. 4321 We're done. Great job. Next, we're gonna get our index finger involved and we'll see you in the next lesson. 7. Pre Vibrato 1 - Discussion - 1st Finger: In the last video, we did a exercise that helped us learn how to use the motion of our fingers to be able to mimic what vie broader looks like without playing her violin just yet. Keep in mind. Also used the same methodology on a viola. Or if you're playing fiddle music next we're going toe really dive deep into our index finger and we're gonna see how that looks like right now. 8. Pre Vibrato 1 - Practice + Exercise 1st Finger: Welcome to our second exercise. Our second practice session. The first finger. All right, let's get started. Okay, We're ready to do our second exercise, our second practice, and we're using her index finger. So we're taking our other fingers and we're currently in a little bit, Not all the way to make a fist, but just curled in a little bit so that our index finger is allowed to stick out just a little bit again. We're taking our index finger from our right hand and pushing down, uh, by the fingernails. So fingernail fees meets fingernail. And I'm gonna be using just the same beat as we did before that. 80 beats per minute so you can listen to it here. And I'm hoping and expecting that you the student is practicing along with us here in this practice session. Okay, so I'm gonna play this at 80 beats per minute. Here we go. We're gonna count down to four and do it together in 12341234123 Now, as we're doing this, you might realize right away. For most folks, our index finger isn't is naturally, um, woman to flax as much as our middle finger or second finger did. Now, this is pretty national for most folks. So what we have to try to do is do this as many times as we possibly can do over and over, just like we're going down so that we can get our index finger as close to the flexibility level of our middle injured or sick going 3 to 1 and you go car three. Are you going As long as you can. And if you need to take a break, go ahead and take great in any of these videos. You have the ability in the lower left hand part of your screen to slow down or speed this video. So if you like challenge, you can speeding up too fast, you can slow it down. Any questions about how to do that? Just send me a message and I'll make sure that I answered all my always answer every question within about 24 or 48 hours so you can always use me in a resource. You go again. And 321 and 32 noticed that my hand he's not flat is a little bit of it. Uh, Rolla, where my index finger is higher. My pinky T three, This helps with Flex 2312 three. Continue. Keep going long as they can. If you feel like you're, you'd be able to stop the video break going. No big deal. You should feel comfortable at all times. Anything's hurting. You should probably stop and go back and seeing if you're doing it correctly. Or we might have some other issues going on like rheumatoid arthritis Pistor or something else. In that case, probably one of your doctor three to keep going. Ken to keep him, we're in the final stretch. Poor 3 to 4. Okay, we're officially in the extra credit around. One teen you call. You can do it for one. We're halfway there through the extra pressure around. 334 me call to go to on 201 tiny car. I don t go. Great job. Congratulations were through that exercise, but it doesn't stop there when we're talking about these videos. And doing these exercise really should be putting sometime in two hour lesson structure when we're or practice structure when we're at home. So if you are practicing your songs at home or you're practicing scales at home. Try to put as much time as you do in your regular practice through scales or a song is my broader practice so that you can be able to move along and, uh, the correct amount of manner so that when you're progressing as faras, your other abilities go, your by broad of skills can match that. 9. Pre Vibrato 1 - Example 3rd Finger: welcome back and we're ready to dive into our third finger now our third finger. It's pretty much like all of our other fingers that we've done so far, but it's really taking those fingers curling around. Taking our are making sure that's nice and loose. Arrest is nice and loose and our fingers and nice and loose. We're just taking that ring finger and pulling it out a little bit more than the rest of the fingers so you can see it pull out. And the same things that happened are index finger on her right hand is simply going to push against it and eventually is gonna go above and rest is its end point Right above worth of Pinky is. So if you're ready for your next exercise, let's get started on our next video. 10. Pre Vibrato 1 - Practice + Exercise - 3rd Finger: Welcome back. We're ready and we're taking their third finger, sticking it out a little more than are other fingers their their finger as little out other than or other fingers. We're taking that index finger and we're placing it on the third finger so that we can make sure that our fingers air nice and loose. Our fingers will be pushed over still that it resides on top of the pinky. Note that we don't want to press any farther than where the pinky is. We're pushing farther than that. It could cause injury. No, we don't want to do that. We want to make sure that we're nice and safe so that our third finger on Lee goes about where our pinky is. You can see the video here. It only goes right about where the pink is, and then we release it back to its original state. So again, just like your other videos are other exercises or other practice sessions. What we've done so far is we've used a 80 beats per minute metro. No, they're included for you at the bottom of the courses or of the video Siri's that were on. So, uh, let's get started. You're gonna hear four klicks first and then we'll get started with her. Exercise. 1234 You're going on. All right. One teen 3141 You're doing a great job. Keep going. Notice as we're doing this exercise together that our third finger isn't quite as flexible as her second thing. You're waas for our rain finger wasn't quite as flexible as what? Our middle finger waas, And that's OK. It's pretty girl. Some of us have pretty flexible ring finger, but that's about 5% of us in our practice. It is the case that your third finger is a little less, uh, pliable or flexible as your other fingers. I want to make sure that we do it more often in practice than let's say, your second finger that is more pliable or more flexible. Are you going to do a great job? 1231 Teen, You're going again. If you ever feel for teamed, do you think your hurts let me do any wrong? Might take a break or you might have some other things going on with your fingers like room , Twitter, arthritis or a pinched nerve. Your finger could be injured, but it hurts. Pre Vibrato 1 - Example - 4th Finger: all right. This is their last thing. Your pinky. It's a little different than the ones that that we've used before. Every finger that we've used so far has been able to go over Ah, finger so that we know where to stop. What's a little bit different about this one is our pinky doesn't have anything to be able to work with. But what we want to be able to do is we still want to be able to get this knuckle and this knuckle to be pliable. So this is gonna be a little bit different. So it works like this. I'm going to grab my other fingers. So the promise face down towards the ground. Okay, then I'm going to take my hand and simply grab them. I'm not squeezed too hard to injure myself. Of course I'm just grabbing them. And then, uh, with the assist of my fingers bringing them down. Now that I have that, it looks a little bit like this. Okay, now that I have that, I'm gonna have my index finger and my pinky bent. So Pinkie is bent. My index finger is not pushing. So when I have that, you're gonna be able to see with the bent pinky that the index finger still flexes the same way. And you'll note that the pinky is one of the weird ones. It feels a little odd. The top knuckle on the bottom knuckle for Most folks have a harder time doing this. This'll flex. But it's really important to have that finger bend for us. Not gonna work the way that we're intending to. Okay, so now that we know how to do it, we're gonna do it one more time. Thes fingers come down. Gonna grab it with all of our vendors. 1234 The seven goes on the top and then dispense in his bend. Our index finger is allowing the pinky Did he pushed our fingers nice and loose, super loose so that we have this flexibility from this Stoeckel in this novel. And that's the movement that we get this moving that we're looking for 12. Pre Vibrato 1 - Practice - 4th Finger: Okay, we're ready to go. And our fingers are pointing down. Palm is down towards the ground. Our thumb comes in. That hand flattens these out. Our pinky is nice and curled around our index fingers ready toe slide down our fingers so that it can meet the other fingernail. And since that's been around, were thinking that our finger is nice and relaxed all the way from our forearm tore wrist to the back of her hand, all the way through our finger, and we're ready for exercise. Pre Vibrato 2 - The Right Amount of Pressure: when we're talking about pressure we really have to understand is putting the right amount of pressure on any one of our fingers whether it be our first, 2nd 3rd or fourth finger. Now I have this camera set up in a down angle toe. Help us see the right angle of my finger so that you can better understand how to perform this task. Hold. Okay, let's get started. So my right hand is going to be in front of my body with my palm face towards me. My chest now is very important that the Onley thing that moves in this instance is my arm. So my are moving one way to the other and knows it's not going up and down or side decide. It's really just going back and forth. Kind of like a saw. Uh, saw enough log, right? So that's the motion. Now, when it does, this is gonna go back and forth just a little bit little tiny bits at a time. Now, my left hand, on the other hand, is going to be curl around where all over the fingers except the finger I intend to use in this case is going to my index finger, my first finger. So all of the fingers are curled around one and I still curler that around Now in my finger , you're gonna see a little bit of a curvature right here where you have this first knuckle, and that second novel in the middle is a little bit of a dip. It might be hard to see on this camera here, but if you look at your own finger, you'll definitely see just just a small little indentation. And that's what really what we're looking for. Now you're going to expose the top of your finger, and what I mean by that is not the patent part of your finger and not the knuckle part of your finger. But the part in between apartment rests on the top to the right angle of where the tip of your finger resigns. Okay, So when we have this, what's going on really is that I'm gonna set my finger down on that little in step or the dividend the finger that helps us a little bit being ableto press down. So your fingers going to stay nice and pliable, and what's gonna happen is your one to try to prevent this finger from pressing down. And you can kind of see a little bit of white That happens on the edge of my finger when I probably pressed down with his finger downwards. We don't want that. All we wanted just to stay there just as it is don't have any movement in the finger whatsoever. Now I'm going to use all the pressing with my right hand going up towards the finger. Right? So now that I have that, I'm going to go up towards my finger and put a little pressure on the finger again, not taking any pressure from this finger President downwards. Yeah, all of the pressure is done with the motion of the hand coming towards the index finger. Okay, Now that I have that, what's gonna happen is I'm going to use this finger to go either way and let it rock. And if I don't have enough pressure, what's gonna happen is the fingers simply going to slide on the finger itself and won't have any flex motion. Okay, Once I do have enough pressure, I'm going to just increase the pressure upwards, increase the pressure upwards until my finger As long as I can achieve, uh, success in letting loose teas and muscles in mind Two knuckles. I should be able to have a little bit of flex in that finger so you can kind of see those knuckles bend and move. And I'm not putting any pressure of this finger, but I'm putting pressure upwards from my right hand finger onto the left hand index finger . So this is how we're gonna do our 1st 1st um, kind of hands on exercise, but instead of your violin for the first time is really just a finger making it work, feeling how it works before we have something form adding, another challenge to such is gonna be the finger gets the finger, the right hand moves back and forth and the left hand and the finger stays put. But Nyssa pliable and were able if we put enough pressure upwards but not too much pressure upwards and move back and forth, we should be able to have a rocking motion seeing flecks from this knuckle and flex from this nickel 14. Pre Vibrato 2 - Pressure Exercise Primer: Welcome back. Now that we know how to use the right amount of pressure without sliding and not too much pressure so that our fingers don't flex, our next step is to use the previous demonstration on how our fingers curled around and went into that little indent. And once we have that little indent, what's gonna happen is our right arm does all of the motion back and forth so that if we put about the right amount of pressure with our arms and our fingers, we should be able to, uh, mimic vibrato. Now, you can kind of see this in this kind of view. Front front, that my arm is now going back and forth. And it is not this hand that is actually doing the motion. So it's really important that your right arm does the motion. So, uh, in our previous demonstration, we did it with her third finger. What we're gonna do moving forward in the next few videos as we're going to be going back to our 80 beats per minute metro. No. And we're going to be doing this along with myself. So this is your chance to be able to practice this so that we can move on to our next steps and get better at vibrato 15. Pre Vibrato 2 - Arm Pressure - 1st Finger: welcome back we're gonna do is we're gonna start out with her index finger and again, I'm using 80 beats per minute. So we're looking for right now is our index finger in the little crease and we're pressing down with our arm and the thing that is actually the moving the actuator is going to be our right arm. Our arm are actually the garden that moves were over. Make sure that does is that this part of the arm goes down and out, so it lose this way, right? What we're gonna do is instead of our finger or our excuse me instead of our arm being actually, er, it just switches now are arm where the instep our finger is, how we're using that is not become stationary. So great work gets a practicing and we'll see in the next lesson. 24. Vibrato 1 - Example - Single Cycle Vibrato with D Scale: Welcome back Now we're done with the preliminary exercises. The things that graduate is to get towards playing riel vibrato. Now we're ready. We have to get a certain movement with our arm before we can really pick up our inspect for the first time. An attempt by Barato. The movement is simply this If you hold your arm up like you're playing your violin, right? So when I noticed that I have my hand up here in my violin in my violin bow hold. What we do is take this violin in my boat way I've taken that away and no, I'm really holding the violent up here holding the bow down here. Uh, and what I'm really trying to do is pretend this is a great visual example is if you walk up to your neighbor's door and you want to ask him a question and you greet them at the door. And of course, I would not kind of door or have a vibe. Raw emotion, knock, knock, knock. If I pick up my violin, we're gonna see this same motion back and four, I'm going toe kind of create that same knocking pattern on the neighbor's door. Except I'm going to touch my thumb and my finger to the side of my violin is that was going to play it now what's gonna happen is these figures will be more free floating than they used to be, because only not mandatory. Make a fist. We would hold her violin our fingers on nice and loose. So what's gonna happen is the same thing happens is the arm goes away and back to its original point arm goes away and back to its original point. So 1000 are not gonna be in knock, knock, knock. So now here's a term we've kind of used a cycle before in the terminology that we've used. But let's go into depth about what it means. One cycle is simply a door knock, right? So in this case, if I play it, one cycle is that's it. I move the arm back, my finger flexes naturally, and it comes back to its original state. Let's do it really slow motion. So just look, of course, that's much lower than by Brown actually goes, but you can actually see the motion in real time move the finger this way. Seek a seat flex notice. There is almost a little flattening out of this knuckle as it wouldn't back. We're not trying to flatten out a knuckle in any way or degree. It's on Lee flattening out because it's pliable. It's moving simply because the arm is moving back and it's getting pushed back farther, and that means the fingers flattening out slightly. So when we play the scale, it's gonna sound like this and none of the notes previously besides this last dino the third finger on the A string that one all of them will be without by broader. So they're just gonna be simple notes like things is the one that's gonna have the cycle and that's it. So now we're gonna do in our next lesson, we're gonna use our Metrodome to be able to do cycles together, and that last little cycle that we're gonna do is gonna be that that key there, that last little cycle. So we're gonna do 1st 1st of all, we're just gonna go through the third finger on the denote on a string and cycled at with her Metrodome and then later on, we'll do cycles of each note. Vibrato 1 - Fingers 1, 2, and 3 Example Single Cycle: welcome back and we were just able to use our D scale at open 123 on the D String opened 123 on a stern and finally ending up on the third string and doing one cycle of vibrato. We're gonna continue this process except use every single finger for every single note of that same one octave d scale. It's gonna look like this. We go one. Here's the second finger. Third finger, Open person, second finger. Three. When I come back, we'll do a quick demonstration of 60 beats per minute, using one cycle with every single finger. Okay, here's that 60 beats per minute click track. Now every bowl gets its own beat, beat, beat, and we're going back in a way. And then back to its original point for my Brad. Oh, it's one cycle only one time, so 321 go. All right. That's a good example of our next exercise. So when you're ready to get to practice, we'll see you in that next lesson 28. Vibrato 1 - Practice - Fingers 1, 2, and 3 Single Cycle Vibrato: Okay, we're ready for a practice. We're doing that 60 beats per minute and as soon as we get done, doomed that. Open. 123 Open 123 on a D scale. We're gonna do it over and over and over again for a while, So you have an audio representation to be able to practice with. So here we go. Three to go. Now it's important as we go through this exercise. If you can't do every single finger, they becomes complicated. Onley do one finger on without that vibrato. Okay? And you get to choose which one you want to do the vibrato on. Or if you can make sure you do all the vibrato wherever you're at, it's OK. Just make sure you do this practice with us. You will see you the next lesson 29. Vibrato 1 - Example - 2 Cycle Vibrato: I hope you had a lot of great work on your single cycle vibrato. They were doing double cycle vibrato. Double cycle is simply doubling the amount of cycles. So our first cycle waas one, we're gonna have Teoh. So if I have my second finger, it's gonna be oh, and again making sure that your arm is doing all of the pulling and pulling back. It's not coming from your rest. It's not coming from your knuckles fingers. Your fingers aren't trying to do anything they're not supposed to. Your rest isn't moving back and forth. Really? It's your arm doing the whole motion. All right, so we're gonna do that same exercise on the D scale again. But it's gonna be waste lower this time. For this example. We're gonna start with two cycles open. D Theo way, Theo More. All right, great. We're gonna get that 60 beats per minute in our next exercise or practice session. And when you're ready and you got the idea of your two cycles, you ready to go? We'll go ahead and jump in there in the next practice session. So looking forward to seeing you there 30. Vibrato 1 - Practice - 2 Cycle Vibrato: instead of a note getting a separate bow, we're gonna be using the the individual ticks to be able to do our vibrato. So it's going to be sick sick. So I do a vibrato cycle on each tick, and my bow is going to be going the same way through both ticks. Someone ago down with foreign open didn't up, uh, up without stopping the bullet. That's really important does not stop your boat when we first do it a couple times, you might feel like you need to stop your bow because your your other hand has, ah, sympathetic movement trying to force yourself through that. Vibrato 1 - Example - 3 Cycle Vibrato: welcome back and hopefully have had a lot of great practice. Now we're on to three cycles in. In order to do three cycles were going to increase the speed of our cycle. Now, I've chosen just 80 beats per minute, which is still rather slow, but it's a great place for us to start. So what's gonna happen is each tick of her Metrodome gets one beat backwards. So one, 23 just like before. But now it has three. 123123 We're gonna make a slight change to what we have done before. Before, we just kind of hung out when we were doing an open string. Now we're going to prepare ourselves for something further down the line and we're gonna prepare ourselves for our first set of three cycles by owner opens. Still doing that. Knock that backwards into its original point backwards and to adrenal original Fluent. So it looked like this. I m a Okay, so notice that my bow was still going the same way at the same speed every single time I'm on one. Newt doesn't matter the amount of times that I'm doing a vibrato cycle so make sure our bow isn't slowing down when we're doing there. Bob Vibrato cycle Just nice and steady each note. Vibrato 1 - Practice - 3 Cycle Vibrato: All right, Here's our practice session for three cycle vibrato. Way to go. Go, Teoh, Theo. Way through. Way through last way things. Great job. And when you're ready for four cycles, go go ahead and move on to the next section. 33. Vibrato 1 - Example - 4 Cycles Vibrato: welcome back and it's time for four cycles. Now we're going to increase the amount of speed to be able to get through a bow. We need to increase the tempo a little bit, but for right now, a good round number and to force ourselves to get through Ah, cycle little faster is gonna be 110 beats per minute for four cycles. Now, as we start to go a little faster and faster, Remember, what we said previously is that our cycles, um, have a shorter motion. So as they were longer before, they start to get smaller and smaller and smaller. Now, we're not getting super small quite yet because we're still only four cycles were going to get much more than four by the time we're all done. But just remember that it may be a shock to the system now that we're going a little faster because we're it is quite a jump from 80 beats per minute to 110. See if you can really trying to get to that 110. If you can't no big deal. It's just where we're at. And when we would do that practice. We're just gonna choose Ah ah, Slower setting for your Metrodome. All right, Here's an example. Won t three way through way, Theo. All right, there's your example. Once you're comfortable with doing four cycles of vibrato, then move on to the next lesson and we'll we'll get a good practice exercise there. 34. Vibrato 1 - Practice - 4 Cycles Vibrato: All right, we're ready to practice our four cycle Librado. Let's get started way through. Way through thing. Way through Great work. And when you're ready, we'll see in the next lesson 36. Vibrato 2 - Example - 8 Cycles: Welcome back in. In this example, we're gonna do a series of eight cycle vibe. Rato. So now we're getting up there to about 160 beats per minute and before we're all done, will be doing it a little bit faster than that. So Ah, here's in a quick example of me playing along now these are gonna be pretty big bows, so make sure that we don't run out of bow. So if we're actually running out of both, the chances are we're starting to high on the boat. So on a on a low, make sure that we're kind of going from frog tipped frogs. Tip defrauded a tip so we don't run into that issue. So here's your 160 beats per minute. 1234567 Thing way through. All right, that's their example. Now, when you're ready to try to get those eight in a move along to the next lesson and we'll see there 37. Vibrato 2 - Practice - 8 Cycles: Here's our D scale with eight cycles. Vibrato were at 160 beats per minute. So here we go. Whoa! Thing way, Theo! Theo, Way through and way thing. Way through. Great job. We'll see you in the next lesson. 38. Vibrato 3 - Example - 200 BPM (Beats Per Minute): Congratulations. You've graduated to 200 beats per minute. Now we're starting to feel at 200 beats per minute. Start starting to really hear classical vibe. Rato. Um, a lot of songs in their depth are much faster than 200 beats per minute. But this is when we first really got to start to feel like we're playing Vibe. Rato's in this example. We're going to use eight beats now. The thing about it is it's too fast to speak and say at the same time, so we'll have to count the amount of times. And since it's going a little bit faster where it's gonna go a little faster boned, owned, owned, dumb. All right, so here's the example. Loan Teoh ready thing. 39. Vibrato 3 - Practice - 200 BPM: now that we have our example of 200 beats per minute. Now we're gonna do our practice exercise, so way. Thing no go, Theo. Last thing. 40. Vibrato 3 - Example - 250 BPM: Welcome to the next example. Now we're shooting up to 250 beats per minute. This be starts to become kind of that rial, resonant vibe Rodham again, we could have I brought a much faster than this, but this is a good, good median vibrato at 250 beats per minute. We're gonna change things up a little bit. We've been using our opens or ones and twos and threes. Even though we've worked with our fourth finger in the past, we've used our fourth finger in the past. So we're going toe, continue to use our fourth finger and replace all open string so in instead of plain little now before on a G string three D string one. So the notes are D Uh huh. And for good measure, we're gonna include this next, for just for a little extra practice with her, with our pinky, maybe say Mazar Open Eastern Example three, I think. Oh ah, all right. That's pretty fast, but I'm confident you can do it once you feel comfortable to get up to that 250 beats per minute again. That's a big step. So make sure I can't repeat this enough. Make sure we're not just kind of going through this videos and hoping that we can just, you know, get through them without kind of fallen behind a little bit. So make sure that you're spending quite a bit of time on each one of these videos before we move along and you feel really confident that you can perform the material. So when you feel confident about that 250 beats per minute, let's move along that practice session. 41. Vibrato 3 - Practice - 250 BPM: Okay, Here's the practice session for 250 beats per minute thing. Theo, I think thing thing. 42. Vibrato 3 - Practice + Example - 300 BPM: welcome back. And we're now we're ready to do 300 beats per minute. Were on the second to the last speed moment. So 300 eyes A really kind of powerful Die Brod. Oh, and here's exercise again. We're trying to keep our bone moving nice and long, making sure that all our motion comes from our arm. Not from a risk, not from from our fingers actually moving. The only reason why they are moving us because they're pliable. Okay, so here's your 300 beats per minute. Okay, this is 300 beats per minute and use your example team thing. 43. Vibrato 4 - Example - 350 BPM: congratulations. You've graduated to the last be challenge. We were at 350 beats per minute, and it's a pretty aggressive vibe. Arado with 350 even though there's lots of songs that require even a faster by broader than that. So here's her example. Won t 03 great. What's feel comfortable with 350 will see you in the next exercise. 44. Vibrato 4 - Practice - 350 BPM: Here's their practice session for 350 beats per minute T three for three. - Oh ! Ah! All right, great work. Now, when you're ready and you don't know a fair amount of practice at the 350 beats per minute and you feel really comfortable with it, we'll see you in the next lesson. 45. Vibrato 5 - Example - Slow to Fast Vibrato: When we started playing our vibrato, we played it very slow through getting her speed up on our dexterity of we ended up playing their my broader very fast. One way to give your music depth is to be able to vary the speed of your vibrato, depending on what you're playing. Still, in this particular example, we're going to use a slow, too fast vibrato. Now, here's an example of me just playing a couple notes. They're not any notes of a specific. They're just random notes that I'm gonna play and I want to show you just standard vibrato and then compare that in contract. Contrast those same notes with that varied speed vibrato. So he was here. Is this regular old remember vibrato? Here's just regular old vibrato. So Okay, now I'm going to use that same by Brad. Oh, acceptable. Start slow on goto fat. Okay, now there's some Some feeling that that resounded from that slow have been going too fast. So this is what we're gonna practice in this particular exercise. We're just gonna pick a note. It doesn't really matter what it is. It's a first finger or a second finger or 1/3 your fourth finger when you practice by yourself. Now, it's very important that when we do this that we're not really using a Metrodome per se because our mention homes are very specific and they don't speed up for us. So we're just gonna, um, here the example. And when you're practicing by yourself, I'll include a practice video here in the next one and will use the same finger that I choose. Just know that you can choose any finger that you want to, not just the one that I'm choosing for this example and for the for the practice exercise later. So we use our third finger on a string, which is a denote, and we're gonna start real slow and see if we can keep up to speed. And I'm slowly going to very, very much slower than the previous example. I'm gonna slowly speed it up into something quicker. So here we go, this long, speeding up. You run out of both this change direction 46. Vibrato 5 - Practice - Slow to Fast Vibrato: All right. Here's your exercise within. Denote that. Their finger on a string. - All right, let's do a little more time. Nice and slow. Too fast. A little faster this time. In this last time, we're gonna graduated even faster yet one more time, just like it. 47. Vibrato 5 - Example - Vibrato Effects: welcome back. We're gonna use one more dynamic to vibrato to give our violent, even mawr death mawr emotional depth. And we're gonna use this trick and what we're going to use. We're gonna add another trick along with it a couple, the two together to make a really fun kind of a sound. That's the first thing that we're gonna do is we're going to not get a full tongue, and that's ah told that rings out. And so that's a told that rings out we want to do is we'll put less pressure on that finger so that we're barely touching the string. You can't get that whistle tone well put by broad 02 with school. All right, so the next thing that we're gonna do and we're gonna add to that barely touched by Brad Oh , we're gonna slide the finger down and off the string settles look like this, Theo way the same thing. But with f sharp tone excepto is that high king finger in the Eastern same thing with Jean Tone. The third finger on the mystery Theo. Right, So now when we get this effect, I'm just gonna play some other totems to give you a good example of what it would sound like. Thing. We're gonna take this one step further. Now that we have this kind of wispy tone, we're going to take that wispy tone and slowly press your finger down just a little harder . So we get a good, solid tone before the next note. So sounds like this the way and then slowly pressing down this finger, uh, on finally, you hear that? Good. Tony, you're looking for All right. What we're gonna do is we're gonna use that into an exercise in, Ah, practice exercise would get good at that. And we're just going to using that d scale again. But once you're ready for that, do little pre work with that wispy vibrato. 48. Vibrato 5 - Practice - Vibrato Effects: Welcome back to the practice of exercise. We're gonna go up the scam, but we're gonna start unknown one one High Teen three Open one high, 23 And every tone that we're gonna do is going to be them. That wispy, barely touching by Brother Preston. A little harder. She get the note and then it slides up and off. Is the example first, Theo notice. When I get to that a I can either by boat or or when there's a spot where really want to hear a clear tone I could still have by Brattle by still touching the sides of my violin and doing the shape, uh, still vibrato. Even though your finger isn't moving back and forth, it creates a little wiggle motion in our violin to create a way for us toe macon open sounding vibrato. And it really depends on if you want that clear sound or the clothes sound before, right. Okay, so let's do this exercise when a countdown to 4 to 1 and then we're gonna do Ready? Go. Let's go down the scale. I think 49. Vibrato 6 - Vibrato Uses and Real World Examples of Uses: we're gonna be learning about how to appropriately place vibrato first in written music sense. So we're now we're on the classical side of things So every beat structure of song So I'm just stopping my foot so you can hear it So sometimes it's on the front of the beat. 123 full. Typically at the beginning of a measure is a good place. So in our example, I'm just gonna play out miscellaneous song without my broader. Okay, now, what's gonna happen is I'm gonna play it a little slower, but added by Brocco right, So does that make sense? Some of our ancillary knows that aren't on those big beat structures. We probably won't do vibrato on unless you're orchestra in your conductor or you're first chair, violinist or via list tells you to do so. All right. Now, for other appropriate placements for my broad. Oh, so now we're moving away from classical music and moving on, maybe to a fiddle side, um, or jazz or rock n roll. So you get to do it however you want to when you're creating music or you're creating, um, a solo or a performance. So in order for us to be ableto get comfortable with playing vibrato and not by brought out in the different kinds of vibrato and the effects of I brought on that we have You would simply play a song that you know how to play or a scale that you know how to play And you're going to experiment with different placements of vibrato and the effects of I Brad Oh, how fast the vibrato is gonna be How slow the vibrato was gonna be So I'm just gonna play Ah, miscellaneous couple of notes here and I'll show you a couple differences as an example. This is not something for you to follow along with. This is just learning and listening. So I'm just gonna play some notes, uh, slowly going to build in some highbrow. No, Theo. Okay, so first we saw, um, the it is just a piece of music. I just made up on the spot. But that piece that those knows that I played you heard it without vibrato. And then then you slowly heard be bringing into vibrato and I didn't play vibrato in all of the all of the places. I chose my spots. I wanted to hear my Broadway and so experiment with that, do a lot of practice defying yourself, Still struggling like with vibrato. Chances are we didn't spend quite enough time working through the different steps along the way, and we and we rushed to them. It's very, very common to do. Um, we want to have that immediate gratification. So if you find yourself at that sport, don't don't worry about it. Just just just kind of go back back as far as you can and spend more time on the eat. The little individual parts that got us to this point. If you find yourself, um, playing vibrato, honesty's A to you that's great. Tried to apply it. Toe is many different things you can possibly can, whether it be your scales, your music that you're learning, branch out of different genres and apply what we've learned to those shots 50. Class Project: in this lesson. We're learning a very simple song and it's going to be a song that most of you already known. We're including it here because it's part of our course environment, our course project that we want to do And when we get done learning vibrato and we can do it very well, we're going toe Want to record yourself playing by Barato to this very simple song? Twinkle, twinkle, little star In this particular version, we're gonna be using fourth fingers instead of opens. We're going to start with 1/4 finger on the G string a detailed followed by an eight owned the fourth finger on the D string, followed by my first finger on a B tone on a string found by 80 still on the d string We have a high regular three too high to Is it followed by D What? It's gonna be a pinky. So when I played by broader with it, it's gonna be oh, when were playing by Barato and your recording yourself playing by broader to the song. You may not be at the point yet where you can slow down and speed up your vibrato No big deal. However, you're able to play vibrato at the point you choose to upload the video to skill share wherever you're at in your development as a vibe. Rato player It won't matter when you upload your video if you're doing single vibe, Rano or many cycles of vibrato, uh, for playing Teoh or even if you haven't aggressive thing. Whatever style of I Brana, you decide to be able to put on this twinkle, twinkle Little star is, however you want to do it and it's OK because you're choosing what you want to do. And that's wonderful. So far we had the pinkies. The next part happens to times, thank you, thinking to a notes followed by three High to Teoh happens again back.
