1. Writer 1 Introduction: Hi, I'm Joanne Re, and this class is about using writer the free and powerful Lever Office word processing program. What's so great about writer? What's so great about Labour Office? Well, my favorite part of it is it is free. Totally free is very similar to Microsoft Word. It has a lot of tools that you can use to do whatever you want to do with word processing. And above all, it's easy to use. I see above all Viennese and use and being free or both equal bonuses in my mind in this class will take a very brief look at the other programs in the Labour Office suite. There is, of course, the writer document, which we're going to take a deep look at While not deep you get to know it and then there is a spreadsheet program. Count the presentation program, impress the drawing program, draw the formula program math and the database program base in this class. We're going to be getting to know Writer, we're going to find out how to download it, how to install it, and then how to make it compatible with word. Then, as a final thing will take a look at how to make your favorite thought the default fund. And then we'll take a look at how you can fancy pure fonds a little bit. Why not enroll now? It'll be fun. 2. Downloading: Let's take a look at downloading in the browsers. The four most common browsers are Chrome Firefox Hedge, which comes with Windows 10 and Internet Explorer. Whichever browser you use, this is where you go to find Labour office. This is the you, Earl. You can either type it in from this or what I prefer to do because I'm not the greatest types in the world is simply search for it. I go to Google and type in deeper office, and it'll take me to the download page. There are other browsers, but the general way of dealing with browsers is just a variation on a theme. We'll take a look at these four, and if you're using another browser, the same type of approach will be available. If you run into a problem, just get in touch with me, and I'll help you through it. What I'm gonna do here is take a look at downloading Lever office on these four browsers. The very first browse we're gonna look at is Firefox, and in Firefox you'll see that when you go to the people office download page and then you will see this pop up and you'll wonder where to go. Take a look in the top right hand corner and you'll see that it's being downloaded. There's a little line and you'll see the progress on that, and it'll go through that. I've shortened this somewhat and suddenly you'll see it, and there it is, being downloaded and then you click on the folder and I'll show you where it's been saved the double click on that, and it will start to install. Next we have Internet Explorer. And when you go to the download page and here is the same download page was surprising. You look at the bottom and you'll see that you have. Lee robs a boat download and it's asking, Do you want to run it? Don't you want to save it? Different things you can do I would recommend choosing, save and run because what it will do, it'll run through saving it, and when it's all downloaded, it will run it. Any would have to go looking for it. Then we come to edge. Here we are back of the same download page we're waiting for to show up and like it and explore it shows up at the bottom of the page and you've got the choice of saving it. Saving s are canceling melt. We're going to save this one. You click on the save and then the stars to download goes to this. I've shortened the download times. You see, it's heads over three minutes. There will make a little faster, and here we are, coming to the end of the download. When it's finished, it does a little skin, and then you have the option off running it rate. From there, you don't have to go looking for it. You simply click on run and then we come to chrome. This is the one I use back of the same download page, and it actually shows up in the bottom left hand corner. You click on that little drop down arrow, and this is what I recommend. Choose the open wind. Done. Click on open one done, and what happens? Theaters. When it goes through the process, it'll just open, and you don't have to go looking for it on your computer. 3. Installing Writer: here. We've come to installing Labor Office. It doesn't matter where you have downloaded it from. This part is exactly the same. You have downloaded it. I'm going to take a look at my download from Chrome, and I asked it to open when done. And here it is. It's opening up all by itself. It says, Click on next. So I click on next. You have a choice of typical or custom leaving. A typical is no point in getting into the weeds with doing custom installations, and I recommend putting a start link on your desktop, and then it runs through the installation program. It takes a look at the space Val Daisy install, and I've shortened this up a little bit for you. It updates the registration and does other things, like generating the script and copying in the files. It doesn't take very long. It depends on the speed of your computer. It runs through copying the new files and getting your system all set up. You don't have to watch all of this. You can simply let it run. It could take us long as five minutes depends. Could take a little longer. When is done. You will be presented with this installation Wizard completed and you click unfinished. You can actually click on next and just walk away and have a cup of coffee or whatever, and when you come back, it will be done. 4. Opening Writer: and here we are. We're finally going to be opening writer. Remember, in the installation, Pro says, I recommended saving it to desktop. It's going to do that by default. Well, if you do, you'll find on your desktop and you click on it the first time you open it up, you're going to see all these different programs. The right document, the spreadsheet, the presentation, the drawing, the formula in the database programs. Right now, we're only interested in the writer document. If it isn't on your desktop, you can always go down to your start menu. I use Windows 10 and I go to my start menu. You'll see it right there, the top recently added, and you'll see Lever office writer and you just go and you click on that and it brings up The same format is if you clicked on the desktop icon now, in this case, I've already had it open. So when I opened at this time, it shows me a blank document. It can remembers what you did the last time, which is nice 5. Making Writer Compatible with Word: Now we have writer open. Let's make it compatible with Microsoft Word. The recent I suggest word, although there are other choices, is that most people use word and if you're sending them a document and chances are good that they will be able to open a word document. So here I am in a document that I've typed a few words in, and we're going to take a look at saving it and you go to the little icon that it looks like an old fashioned floppy disk and you click on that hits. All set to Save is an only F file, which is the default labor office format for writer. Let's make life easier. What we'll do is we're going to go into the guts of the program. Let's call it that you go to tools options and you take a look at the list on the left hand side. You click on load save, you'll see there. Some choices don't get confused with the rest of them. There's very rarely that you'll ever have to use thes click on general and take a look and you'll see that the only F file is there. We we don't care about that right now. We want to always save as you click on the drop down list and you see word. Actually, you'll see that there are several different formats of Microsoft Word. There's Microsoft Word 2007 to 13 XML, which is the deal See X format. Have you could see that there's a Microsoft Word 97 to 2003 deal See Format. It depends on who you have to share your file with. I usually use the Microsoft were 2007 to 2013 format, and you can choose either one. I'm going to choose the deal. See X format. Now when you go to save the file, you'll see that it pops up in your default format in my case of 2000 and 7 2013 format. And then that's it. It saved. Few closes down, and you open up a new document. When you go to save it. It's still going to be a Microsoft Word format. It makes life a lot easier 6. Setting a Default Font: once you've dug into writer and you actually change the format in which you save your files , everything else is kind of easy. We're gonna take a look at getting started with writer and haven't looked the way wanted to look. This involves setting your default fund. If you take a look at the default font when you open up word, you're going to see the list of all the different programs that you can open. You're gonna choose the writer document and you'll have this blank screen and you'll see that the font is liberations. Siri's font size 12. You take a look at how it looks. I'm just going to take a few words in here, and it's not a bad looking phoned, but let's take a look at what you do. If you want to change it well, we're going to go back to tools options, and this time we're going to take a look under the very first choice and you'll see there is fonts mentioned. That's not where you want to go. You're going to scroll on down to leave her office writer and you're gonna choose basic fonts. This is no surprise. All the basic fonts for all the styles are liberation sarees. Now what I'm going to do is I'm going to change this to Times New Roman, which is a good old standby in the top box. Click on the little drop down arrow to the right annual scroll on down till you find times New Roman. Click on that. And there you were times New Roman's now your default font or will be once you click. OK, it doesn't look that much different from liberation. Sarif Go back two options and I personally use verdana It's just something I like. So I'm going to go down down the list and there's for Danna and I click on OK, this is the default fund now is verdana. 7. Formatting Fonts: Let's take a quick look at how you can customize your funds. You know you can add some color to them. You can make them bold, italic underlined. And if you don't like the way they look, you can on do these changes very easily. Here we are in a document, and I have some words in there. I picked them out of the novel in progress, so they're there to be used as a tool, for example, just for something to show you what you can do with fonts. First, I'm going to highlight a paragraph, and the easy way to do any highlighting is to simply click at the beginning and hold your left mouse button down and drag it to the end. Then let it go when that's highlighted, and then simply click on the tool you want to use, and you take a look above here just to the right of your default font and font you're using . In the size, you will see the bold theater Alec and the underlying and the strike through. We're going to ignore these superscript in the sub script for now, but we'll take a look at the color and at the highlighting and here we have some bold and we have some metallic and we have some underlining. And let's pick a word. And the easy way to pick a word is a civilly double click on it. And when the word is highlighted, you choose something in this case and going to choose a color and a pick red, I'll choose another word. They'll make it bold and underlined, and I'm gonna make it red. And I think since I'm added, I might as well make it bigger. This particular little paragraph here, I'm going to make it bigger. And since I'm at it, I'm going to take this last little paragraph and make it bigger and change the color of the whole paragraph. Well, I got to say it doesn't look that great. What you can do if you want on do any this formatting, you can simply select it. And then you click on the little A with the X, which on does all the so called direct formatting. I've selected this paragraph and I've clicked on the remove formatting button and there I am back to where I waas. If you were playing around with this and having fun with it. But the whole thing doesn't look the way you want it to look. You can on do the whole thing. You can even highlight the section. You simply select the part you want to highlight justice if you were using a marker highlighter and run this highlighter over it. If you want to undo what you've done and go back to the beginning, you can seem to go to edit and choose, select all and go over and click on the clear formatting button. And there you are, back to the beginning. These are the very basic tools, but there's nothing to say that you can apply all these formats to one letter or one word a one paragraph for the whole document. 8. Other Libre Office Programs: Let's take a quick look at the other programs in the Liber office suite. I mentioned them early when we opened up Labour Office. Now let's just take a quick overview. Look at these other programs. They may or may not be of interest to you, but it's good to know that they're there. The 1st 1 is a Cal spreadsheet, and it's just your standard spreadsheet, very like Excel. And then there's Impress presentation, which is very like Power Point. Then there's draw drawing, which is a very nice drawing program if you're into doing all kinds of artistic things and there is math, the Formula program. If you work with formulas, it's really nice to have this capability. And then there is based the database program. If you're already in writer and working away and you want to switch to a different program , you don't need to close down writer. And then go on, open it up. From the very beginning, you can simply go up to file, click on New and you'll see all the different formats their you don't see math, and in case you're wondering where it is, it's down there called formula, and if you click on it well, you're right back there is if you had clicked on math 9. What's Next: And so we come to the end of this brief overview off using writer here again is the download link, and what I'm planning next is a little more information about writer. For those of you who are interested, the next course is going to be on working with styles. Using style sheets is a very powerful way of streamlining your work. After that, I'll do a little course on shortcuts, which really speeds up your work and cuts on a lot of the repetition that is involved. And then there is cut, copy and paste. They are about three ways of doing anything in a word processing program, and using cut copy and pastes really can speed along the work you have to do then a plan. Of course, on working with images, you can import graphics and photographs and various things into your writer document. I hope to see you again
